[Blueprint servercloud-p-cloud-image-testing] Ubuntu Server Cloud Image Testing

2011-11-07 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
Scope: Official ec2 images for Ubuntu Server across all regions for amd64 and
i386
  Coverage:
    All regions
    All zones
    All types
    Multi-instance
    Tests:
  simple-user-data
  multipart-user-data
  cloud-config

  Objective:
   a) Verification that ec2 images boot, reboot and shutdown OK
   b) Verification that cloud-unit is working OK in images

  Method: ubuntu-server-ec2-testing project
Current Frequency: Candidates for Development Milestones only.

  Questions/Proposals:
[james-page] We should be performing a daily test of ec2 images across all
regions during development
[james-page] We published new AMI's for most existing Ubuntu releases - but
they don't get verified as good
[james-page] Reporting of results is currently awkward between jenkins and

+ Eucalyptus
+ Eucalyptus Community Cloud?
+ OpenStack - including KVM and LXC and Xen
+ Canonistack?
+ FreeCloud (NTT and RackSpace)?

- Work Items:
+ 4) Full Testing of Release Ubuntu Images
+ Automated testing will be built into the twice weekly image release
publishing process and will cover:
+ a) An initial smoke test
+ b) Followed by full image testing

[Blueprint servercloud-p-hadoop] Ubuntu Server + Hadoop and Bigdata

2011-11-07 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
- Validation of Assumptions from spec:
+ Summary of objectives for Precise:

- Ubuntu will package Apache Hadoop (rather than one of the various variants).
- Cloudera - CDH
- Hortonworks - Apache Hadoop - Employ 80% of upstream committers
- OpenJDK Support
- Ubuntu should be help drivng support for OpenJDK from upstreams
- Packaging will align to Apache Bigtop (based on the most Ipopular upstream
packaging) - YES
- Packaging will focus on the most recent stable release of Hadoop - 0.203.0 -
YES
- Configuration methods should take into account integration with configuration
management tools such as Puppet and Chef - YES
- The majority of Java dependencies can be fulfilled through what is already in
the archive (see hadoop-dependency-report.tar.gz)
- kfs - this can be excluded to disable this feature but does not look like
that much work to package.
- Apache ftpserver would be required to enable smoke testing - again looks
OK to package.
- Focus will be on a solid Hadoop core with contrib packages if time permits.
- Most dependencies are already in the archive apart from thrift (probably not
an issue).
- Native integrations must be part of the packaging.
- Packages will target universe for this release.
-
- We need to ensure upstream co-operation from Hortonworks/Cloudera to ensure
ongoing collaboration going forward.
-
- Good support for Hadoop on ARM should be an objective of this work.
-
- Comments from blueprint:
-
- I have to wonder if the demand for Hadoop really is large enough to justify
the effort we'd be putting into providing it? Are we really at a point already
where having terabytes of data you need to analyse is a common use case? - Soren
- Sounds like there is demand in the distribution.
- - important for Ubuntu Server, to maintain its position as 'best OS for
the Cloud'
- - the number of users needing to process TBs of data is just increasing;
over the life of 12.04 LTS, more and more users will have a need for a
map-reduce cluster application; having in the distro will ensure they pick
Ubuntu for that application
-
- Work Items:
- [m_3] hadoop community input (what about no thrift?): TODO
- [jamespage] Active backport packaging process post 12.04 release: TODO
- [m_3] Attend HadoopWorld. :): TODO
+ 1) Ubuntu will target packaging Apache Hadoop
+ - Help drive support for running under OpenJDK
+ - Packaging will retain flavour of most popular upstream packaging
+ - Focus will be on most recent stable (0.20.203.0)- validate with upstream
release schedule
+ - Thrift support will not be included
+ - LZO and snappy compression options will be investigated
+ - universe target this release.
+
+ 2) Juju Charms will by default align to distro packaging for precise
+
+ Full sessions notes from UDS-P:

one into the charm repository: TODO

[Bug 732953] Re: can_connect function inside ec2.rb always return false

2011-11-07 Thread Paul Hirst
I think this fix may have just broken puppet running on a non EC2
instance. On real hardware we now get the following output from puppet:

root@uk-sofalive1:/usr/share/doc/facter# puppetd --test
notice: Ignoring --listen on onetime run
info: Retrieving plugin
err: Could not run Puppet configuration client: Could not retrieve local facts:

Running facter reveals:

Stracing this process reveals that's it's attempting to connect to

rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [PIPE], NULL, 8) = 0
close(5)= 0

We've seen this on three of our servers now. We expect it to happen on
all of them if we allow the facter package to update.

[Bug 537851] Re: dhclient silently ignores unreadable config-file

2011-11-07 Thread Jean-Pierre van Riel
I can confirm this issue. I have reproduced the problem and used strace.
I've also found the app-armour log entry. The app-armour disallowing the
-cf new location is presumably intentional. The bug is that dhclient3
does not warn the user or log an error when it's unable to open the file
parsed to -cf.

In trace-cust-dhcpclient.log:

  open(/home/user/Scripts/reroute/dhclient-cust-sbsa.conf, O_RDONLY)
= -1 EACCES (Permission denied)

In kern.log

  Nov 7 17:09:18 hostname kernel: [20777.329386] type=1400
audit(1320678558.977:25): apparmor=DENIED operation=open parent=8316
profile=/sbin/dhclient3 name=/home/user/Scripts/reroute/dhclient-
cust-sbsa.conf pid=8317 comm=dhclient requested_mask=r
denied_mask=r fsuid=0 ouid=1000

The trace was produced as follows: sudo strace -e trace=file dhclient -e
IF_METRIC=0 -cf /home/enigma/Scripts/reroute/dhclient-cust-sbsa.conf
usb0 trace-cust-dhcpclient.log

I've installed the package - don't know - about 1-2 years ago. recently
upgraded to oneiric.

I currently do not see how libvirt-bin could create that directory
during install, because there is no postinst script. Just a .postrm .

(The upgrade-procedure failed and aborted, because the package
downloading the flash plugin for the browser tried to download the flash
plugin at a system state where the network configuration was down and
exited with a exit value 0. Thus the upgrader natty-oneiric aborted. I
then had to finish things manually. Maybe this has influenced things
somehow. (but all packages were definitely configured.))

[Bug 820715] Re: sudo poweroff -n within a container just hangs

2011-11-07 Thread Clint Byrum
The ssh.conf from lucid-updates has this fixed already:

stop on runlevel [!2345]

openssh (1:5.3p1-3ubuntu6) lucid-proposed; urgency=low

  * Stop Upstart job on runlevel [!2345] rather than just S, since
/etc/init.d/sendsigs no longer kills jobs under Upstart's control
(thanks, Rob Donovan; LP: #603363).

 -- Clint Byrum cl...@ubuntu.com Sat, 12 Feb 2011 08:38:43 -0800

So if containers aren't getting their packages from -updates.. that is
most likely the issue.

[Bug 820715] Re: sudo poweroff -n within a container just hangs

2011-11-07 Thread Serge Hallyn
Ah! Thanks, Clint. So then this is actually due to the bug in
debootstrap that prevents it from using -updates.

I'm going to mark this bug Fix Released as it is unrelated at this point
to lxc (or ssh for that matter).

I'm open to suggestions for the best way to handle this. Documentation
(i.e. after creating a lucid container, you need to enable -updates and
update) someplace seems best, but where?

[Bug 886770] Re: Directory /var/log/libvirt/qemu missing in package

2011-11-07 Thread Serge Hallyn
The directory is created with debian/libvirt-bin.dirs, and shows up in
'dpkg -L libvirt-bin'.

Could you try re-installing libvirt-bin and see if that fixes your
problem?

It would be a real bug if 'apt-get remove libvirt-bin' removed
/var/log/libvirt/qemu but not the libvirt logrotate rules. I'll test to
see if that is the case. But it sounds just as likely that this really
was a side effect of the bad upgrade which would not happen with a
simple 'apt-get remove'.

[Bug 886770] Re: Directory /var/log/libvirt/qemu missing in package

2011-11-07 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Oh, yep, the package was actually deinstalled, but not purged. Didn't
notice that, must have been removed somewhere in the broken upgrade
process. Thus the directory was gone, while /var/log/libvirt and
/var/log/libvirt/shutdownlog.log remained on the system, as well as
/etc/logrotate.d/libvirtd (and probably all other files in /etc).

[Bug 886770] Re: Directory /var/log/libvirt/qemu missing in package

2011-11-07 Thread Serge Hallyn
Indeed, because /var/log/libvirt/qemu gets created by libvirt-bin.dirs,
if there is no log output under /var/log/libvirt/qemu, then when doing
apt-get remove libvirt-bin, the logrotate.d/libvirt file is not deleted
(until you purge), but the /var/log/libvirt/qemu dir is.

This should get moved to postinst as suggested by Hadmut.

Hadmut, I will file a bug against debian to do so. If you prefer to do
so yourself, please let me know.

[Bug 556167] Re: vmbuilder uses parted to create disk images, which leads to broken sector counts (cannot use grub2 on disk images created by vmbuilder/parted)

2011-11-07 Thread Phillip Susi
Parted defaults to leaving the first 1 MB of the disk empty these days,
regardless of the cylinder size. I just tested it by creating a 1 gb
file and having parted mklabel msdos, then mkpart using 0% and 100% as
the start and end positions, and the partition starts at sector 2048
even though the sector count is 32.

Can you describe how to reproduce the results you describe with parted?

I reproduced this on two different machines. Why wasn't a simple run of
the facter command part of the automated tests after building this
package?

[Bug 885998] Re: facter upgrade crashes puppet

2011-11-07 Thread David Brewer
I just ran into this issue this afternoon on my own servers. The issue
is definitely related to the ec2.rb changes in facter 1.5.6-2ubuntu2.2.
As a temporary hack/workaround I was able to get Puppet working again by
manually editing /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/facter/ec2.rb and reverting the
can_connect? method to use the code for that method defined in the
previous version of the page. Specifically, see below the commented
new version of the method and my inserted old version of the method.

# This version of the method causes timeouts even if your machine is not using
EC2
#def can_connect?(ip,port,wait_sec=2)
# url = http://#{ip}:#{port};
# Timeout::timeout(wait_sec) {open(url)}
# return true
#rescue
# return false
#end

# This version of the method seems to work, although I can't guarantee it works
with EC2
# as my servers are not running there
def can_connect?(ip,port,wait_sec=2)
 Timeout::timeout(wait_sec) {open(ip, port)}
 return true
rescue
  return false
end

[Bug 556167] Re: vmbuilder uses parted to create disk images, which leads to broken sector counts (cannot use grub2 on disk images created by vmbuilder/parted)

2011-11-07 Thread Kees Cook
The problem is that parted treats local files (as used by vmbuilder)
differently from actual disk files, and changes the sector size
accordingly (without an option to change it). As a result, the partition
start locations are too small for grub2 to install. I had originally
reproduced this by using vmbuilder to install Ubuntu, and then
attempting to update to grub2, which would fail, since there wasn't
enough room.

My previously attached hack/work-around for vmbuilder was to skip a
sector when building the first partition.

[Bug 875262] Re: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs/sqlite.so'

2011-11-07 Thread JenniferHodgdon
@davewalker: Thanks for posting your workaround in #9 and clarification
in #14.

I started getting this message in my cron log emails after upgrading from 11.04
to 11.10 last week. The error was coming from the /etc/cron.d/php5 job. You can
also see it in a terminal by running:
% php5
(that's probably the simplest reproduce).

So I did as you suggested (more or less), and my errors went away, and
I'm still able to use Drupal 7 with SQLite (which is why I had the
SQLite packages in the first place). A somewhat safer way to get rid of
this error message and not completely obliterate the sqlite.ini file
(which you could conceivably need for something):

cd /etc/php5/conf.d/
sudo mv sqlite.ini sqlite.NOTini

[Bug 885998] Re: facter upgrade crashes puppet

2011-11-07 Thread Jacob Helwig
I just checked the change that David posted and it breaks retrieval of
EC2 facts.

In the upstream repository (as of
d62e079489c07201cb343f2ca109fecd62d6e567, and later refactored in
cc67a0148b97e315572cdb905476df1224a78dd5) the can_connect? method
started only being called if a couple of additional checks passed.

I'm looking for a good way to back-port some of these changes.

[Bug 885998] Re: facter upgrade crashes puppet

2011-11-07 Thread Jacob Helwig
Adam Gandelman graciously pointed out that he already had branches to
fix this. Looking at the changes, they're the minimum to fix the
regression and are a better fix than the more invasive back-porting I
was looking at. I've also verified his changes on lucid running on EC2,
and in a VM.

[Bug 887176] Re: Report a bug about “nautilus” package

2011-11-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!
