Blueprint changed by James Page: Whiteboard changed: - Validation of Assumptions from spec: + Summary of objectives for Precise: - Ubuntu will package Apache Hadoop (rather than one of the various variants). - Cloudera - CDH - Hortonworks - Apache Hadoop - Employ 80% of upstream committers - OpenJDK Support - Ubuntu should be help drivng support for OpenJDK from upstreams - Packaging will align to Apache Bigtop (based on the most Ipopular upstream packaging) - YES - Packaging will focus on the most recent stable release of Hadoop - 0.203.0 - YES - Configuration methods should take into account integration with configuration management tools such as Puppet and Chef - YES - The majority of Java dependencies can be fulfilled through what is already in the archive (see hadoop-dependency-report.tar.gz) - kfs - this can be excluded to disable this feature but does not look like that much work to package. - Apache ftpserver would be required to enable smoke testing - again looks OK to package. - Focus will be on a solid Hadoop core with contrib packages if time permits. - Most dependencies are already in the archive apart from thrift (probably not an issue). - Native integrations must be part of the packaging. - Packages will target universe for this release. - - We need to ensure upstream co-operation from Hortonworks/Cloudera to ensure ongoing collaboration going forward. - - Good support for Hadoop on ARM should be an objective of this work. - - Comments from blueprint: - - I have to wonder if the demand for Hadoop really is large enough to justify the effort we'd be putting into providing it? Are we really at a point already where having terabytes of data you need to analyse is a common use case? - Soren - Sounds like there is demand in the distribution. - - important for Ubuntu Server, to maintain its position as 'best OS for the Cloud' - - the number of users needing to process TBs of data is just increasing; over the life of 12.04 LTS, more and more users will have a need for a map-reduce cluster application; having in the distro will ensure they pick Ubuntu for that application - - Work Items: - [m_3] hadoop community input (what about no thrift?): TODO - [jamespage] Active backport packaging process post 12.04 release: TODO - [m_3] Attend HadoopWorld. :): TODO + 1) Ubuntu will target packaging Apache Hadoop + - Help drive support for running under OpenJDK + - Packaging will retain flavour of most popular upstream packaging + - Focus will be on most recent stable (0.20.203.0)- validate with upstream release schedule + - Thrift support will not be included + - LZO and snappy compression options will be investigated + - universe target this release. + + 2) Juju Charms will by default align to distro packaging for precise + + Full sessions notes from UDS-P: + http://pad.ubuntu.com/uds-p-servercloud-p-hadoop + + Work items precise-alpha-1: + [m_3] Hadoop community input (what about no thrift? etc): TODO + [m_3] Attend HadoopWorld: TODO [james-page] Check on release schedule for Apache Hadoop between now and Feature Freeze: TODO [kirkland] Investigate upstream co-operation from Hortonworks/Cloudera to ensure ongoing collaboration going forward: TODO + + Work items precise-beta-1: [negronjl] adjust hadoop charms to have a configurable backend hadoop, get one into the charm repository: TODO [james-page] Package KFS for Ubuntu: TODO [james-page] Package Apache ftp-server for Ubuntu: TODO [james-page] Package Hadoop for Ubuntu: TODO + + Work Items: + [james-page] Active backport packaging post 12.04 release: TODO + [james-page] Feed back all work to Debian: TODO -- Ubuntu Server + Hadoop and Bigdata https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/servercloud-p-hadoop -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

I can confirm this issue. I have reproduced the problem and used strace. I've also found the app-armour log entry. The app-armour disallowing the -cf new location is presumably intentional. [Bug 886770] Re: Directory /var/log/libvirt/qemu missing in package
The directory is created with debian/libvirt-bin.dirs, and shows up in 'dpkg -L libvirt-bin'. Could you try re-installing libvirt-bin and see if that fixes your problem? It would be a real bug if 'apt-get remove libvirt-bin' removed /var/log/libvirt/qemu but not the libvirt logrotate rules. I'll test to see if that is the case. But it sounds just as likely that this really was a side effect of the bad upgrade which would not happen with a simple 'apt-get remove'. ** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/886770 Title: Directory /var/log/libvirt/qemu missing in package To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libvirt/+bug/886770/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 886770] Re: Directory /var/log/libvirt/qemu missing in package
Oh, yep, the package was actually deinstalled, but not purged. Didn't notice that, must have been removed somewhere in the broken upgrade process. [Bug 886770] Re: Directory /var/log/libvirt/qemu missing in package
Indeed, because /var/log/libvirt/qemu gets created by libvirt-bin.dirs, if there is no log output under /var/log/libvirt/qemu, then when doing apt-get remove libvirt-bin, the logrotate.d/libvirt file is not deleted (until you purge), but the /var/log/libvirt/qemu dir is. [Bug 885998] Re: facter upgrade crashes puppet
I just ran into this issue this afternoon on my own servers. The issue is definitely related to the ec2.rb changes in facter 1.5.6-2ubuntu2.2. As a temporary hack/workaround I was able to get Puppet working again by manually editing /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/facter/ec2.rb and reverting the can_connect? method to use the code for that method defined in the previous version of the page. Specifically, see below the commented new version of the method and my inserted old version of the method. # This version of the method causes timeouts even if your machine is not using EC2 #def can_connect?(ip,port,wait_sec=2) # url = http://#{ip}:#{port}; # Timeout::timeout(wait_sec) {open(url)} # return true #rescue # return false #end # This version of the method seems to work, although I can't guarantee it works with EC2 # as my servers are not running there def can_connect?(ip,port,wait_sec=2) Timeout::timeout(wait_sec) {open(ip, port)} return true rescue return false end -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to facter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/885998 Title: facter upgrade crashes puppet To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/puppet/+bug/885998/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 556167] Re: vmbuilder uses parted to create disk images, which leads to broken sector counts (cannot use grub2 on disk images created by vmbuilder/parted)
The problem is that parted treats local files (as used by vmbuilder) differently from actual disk files, and changes the sector size accordingly (without an option to change it). As a result, the partition start locations are too small for grub2 to install. I had originally reproduced this by using vmbuilder to install Ubuntu, and then attempting to update to grub2, which would fail, since there wasn't enough room. My previously attached hack/work-around for vmbuilder was to skip a sector when building the first partition. ** Changed in: parted (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vm-builder in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/556167 Title: vmbuilder uses parted to create disk images, which leads to broken sector counts (cannot use grub2 on disk images created by vmbuilder/parted) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/parted/+bug/556167/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 875262] Re: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs/sqlite.so'
@davewalker: Thanks for posting your workaround in #9 and clarification in #14. I started getting this message in my cron log emails after upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10 last week. The error was coming from the /etc/cron.d/php5 job. You can also see it in a terminal by running: % php5 (that's probably the simplest reproduce). So I did as you suggested (more or less), and my errors went away, and I'm still able to use Drupal 7 with SQLite (which is why I had the SQLite packages in the first place). A somewhat safer way to get rid of this error message and not completely obliterate the sqlite.ini file (which you could conceivably need for something): cd /etc/php5/conf.d/ sudo mv sqlite.ini sqlite.NOTini -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to php5 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/875262 Title: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs/sqlite.so' To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php5/+bug/875262/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
