Funny, because I did a clean install too. I cannot give you more info then
what I gave you before, as far as I know.
Presently, apparmor is disabled on mysql. Anything more I can do for you?

[Bug 890501] Re: EC2 cloud-init overwrites 127.0.1.1 in /etc/hosts on every reboot

2011-11-15 Thread Scott Moser
On Tue, 15 Nov 2011, Eric Hammond wrote:

Scott: Your suggested approach works for me even though I can't find any
documentation on how this is supposed to work. Everything I read says
that 127.0.1.1 should be the canonical hostname of the instance. Do you
happen to have any pointers to the information you are alluding to with
 IPv6 and 127.0.1.2?

No.
I actually tried just adding a 127.0.1.1 at the top, and cloud-init
still found it (i was hoping that it would only update the one preceeded
by it's comment, which would have been nicer). I tried that, it didn't
work.
I don't think this should be invalid as I do think we've made things
a bit worse. We were addressing the issue that we saw on openstack where
the ec2metadata's local-hostname did not have a domain portion (bug
854614).

Some other fallout of this change has been in services that try to bind
to the response to `hostname -f`. The service will then end up binding to
localhost only and not be available on a real address. Mark Mimms has
raised this issue, but I'm not certain which services in particular, and
I don't think that is a great solution itself, and those services would
have issues with the mechanism that you're using above for /etc/hosts, but
previously we were not writing a fqdn to /etc/hosts, which would allow a
dns-lookup to get the local-ipv4 address.

I'll talk with some of the people on the foundations team and see if we
can't come up with a final solution for this. I really should have done
some more research before putting this in. Hopefully we can get it right
for 12.04, and possibly SRU for 11.10.

another AMQP implementation (to be confirmed with actual working code)
   http://osdir.com/ml/openstack-cloud-computing/2011-10/msg00522.html

Gnome power (or UPower?) daemon integration/interaction
   * add a configuration option to enable GPD to use the powernap state to
determine machine's activity or non-activity
   * test modern 3.2 kernel (against 2.6.38), verify kernel doing the right
thing on idle CPUs, and hopefully purge PowerNap's cpu offline script

2011-11-15 Thread Phillip Susi
Ok, I think I see the problem in parted. I assume that vmbuilder uses
the output of parted's print free command to decide where to start the
new partition, and that shows the free space starts at 16.4kb.
Specifying that as the start position for the new partition would result
in the too small embed area issue.

Since parted prefers to start the first partition at 1 mb, it should
probably report the free space as starting there as well, not at 16.4kb.

+ Rationale: There is significant value to both the community and paid
+ customers in having Canonical own and maintaining images on major cloud-
+ vendors.

  Assumptions:
    * There are literally thousands of public Ubuntu public images; each public
image is slightly different and is confusing to customers.
    * Owning our own images will help to reduce vendor customization and make
for a consistent experience across different cloud-vendors.
    * There will be new major cloud-vendors that will want the official images,
or on which we want to publish images.

To provide multiple ways for different cloud vendors to consume the official

make changes to support multiple glance registry servers.
  3. Provide a sync script for people to pull the latest images for OpenStack

+
+ Security: This package has had no reported CVE's.
+
+ Quality assurance: Keystone is actively maintained by the upstream.

[Bug 890501] Re: EC2 cloud-init overwrites 127.0.1.1 in /etc/hosts on every reboot

2011-11-15 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

When running an EC2 instance of Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric, cloud-init sets up
/etc/hosts with a default value for 127.0.1.1 looking something like:

  127.0.1.1 ip-10-202-61-233.ec2.internal ip-10-202-61-233

I edit /etc/hosts to change this value to something that makes more
sense to my internal software (e.g., Apache). For example:

  127.0.1.1 myhost.example.com myhost

BUG: Whenever I reboot the EC2 instance, cloud-init overwrites my
important settings of this value back to the old default. This breaks
the startup of my applications on the server as they expect to be able
to resolve the names I want set in the /etc/hosts file. My web server
never comes up after a simple reboot.

Once the user edits the value for 127.0.1.1 in the /etc/hosts file, it
should never be overwritten. Not on a reboot. Not on a stop/start
(which assigns new IP addresses). Not even when an AMI is built out of
this instance and a new instance is run.

The user changed that value to something they cared about with reasons
we can't assume to trump. It should be left alone.

If /etc/hosts does not exist or if 127.0.1.1 is still the same value
that cloud-init last set it to, then it *might* be acceptable to
overwrite it with a value based on a change in the private IP address,
HOWEVER, this might still break the application if software configured
  itself using the old value.

Either never change the value if it exists, or store elsewhere the value
that was initially set and only change it if it is still the same.

See also bug #371936 where a similar bug was fixed back in 2009. Figure
out if there is some reason that this part of the system is fragile and
  prone to breaking.

[Bug 871966] Re: FQDN written to /etc/hosts causes problems for clustering systems

2011-11-15 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

  *** Ubuntu 11.10 Release Note ***

Cloud instances and servers pre-seeded with cloud-init will have their
FQDN written to /etc/hosts and pointed to the IP 127.0.1.1. This may
cause issues for daemons which try to listen on their hostname, rather
than 0.0.0.0, as they will now only be reachable locally, rather than on
the network address that their FQDN resolves to.

  ***

-
- By writing the FQDN to /etc/hosts as resolving to 127.0.1.1, systems like
Cassandra have a much harder time determining their address to communicate to
other cluster members.
+ By writing the FQDN to /etc/hosts as resolving to 127.0.1.1, systems
+ like Cassandra have a much harder time determining their address to
+ communicate to other cluster members.

While some might see communicating your IP to others as a bug, being
able to use gethostname() and then resolving it to get the actual IP
address of one's machine is fairly important.

Its my understanding that in resolving bug #802637 , the Debian
networking docs were used as a guide:

  http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch05.en.html
  Point 5.1.2 specifically.

It does suggest that one needs an FQDN in /etc/hosts.

However cloud-init should only set the addresss if it cannot be
  determined.

cloud-init should first try gethostbyname() on the FQDN. If it resolves,
*do not write FQDN to /etc/hosts*. This assures that if it has been
configured to be resolvable by some method in nsswitch.conf such as DNS
or NIS or etc., it will not be overidden by /etc/hosts.

[Blueprint servercloud-p-move-ec2-mirrors-to-s3] Move EC2 mirrors to S3

2011-11-15 Thread Ben Howard
Blueprint changed by Ben Howard:

Whiteboard changed:
  Rationale:
S3 is a faster, more scalable technology that allows us to reduce costs and
increase availability for EC2 users.

  Assumption:
    * Running on-EC2 mirrors is expensive and presents availability challenges.
    * on-EC2 mirrors have limited bandwidth and thus speeds can be affected by
load
    * S3 has very high availability
    * S3 intra-region bandwidth is free
    * on-EC2 mirrors results in bandwidth charges when users use a mirror
outside the availability zone
    * S3 is extremely fast. Generally speeds to S3 access are near-native
    * Amazon has asked for us to host our mirrors on S3
    * Uploads to S3 are free

A prototyped-S3 mirror will be shown at UDS.

  ___

UDS Example S3 Mirror Example for Oneiric (Mirror will be active until
Wednesday 01 Nov 2011). Mirror is ONLY accessible inside EC2 in US-
  EAST-1.

[ NOTE: DO NOT USE THIS MIRROR FOR PRODUCTION USE. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE,
PROOF OF CONCEPT MIRROR ONLY. ]

  Q. 'LAN' bandwidth access to the region mirrors is currently free already,
no? -- Daviey
  A. All upload and intra-zone transit is free.

  Q. How do you keep people out of EC2 from access?
  A. Bucket policies enable restricting access to the Amazon CIDR address.

  Comments:
  - Can this whiteboard be pre-filed with some examples of how others have
implemented this?
     * AFAIK, there is only one implementation of S3 buckets. Most other
examples that I know of use S3 as a storage backend, while having an EC2
instance front the S3 storage. Amazon Linux AMI is the only pure S3
backend/frontend solution.

  - How would this work?
    * There are a number of ways to push out a repository using existing tools.
s3fuse (albeit rather buggy) allows you to mount a s3 bucket as file system.
s3cmd allows for local to remote synchronization. However, in order to build
something that scales well, you need something that uses multiple connections
and pushes multiple files at once (i.e. threading and boto python library)
-    * Example syncronization code can be found at
lp:~utlemming/+junk/s3repo_tool (this code will be used to populate the
prototyped-S3 mirror for UDS.
+    * Example syncronization code can be found at
lp:~[utlemming]:/+junk/s3repo_tool (this code will be used to populate the
prototyped-S3 mirror for UDS.

  --

  Examples:
Amazon Linux AMI currently uses S3 for backing the mirrors. The design is
more or less:
  - One bucket per region.
  - Buckets are named off of the DNS CNAME, i.e.
us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com

[Blueprint servercloud-p-move-ec2-mirrors-to-s3] Move EC2 mirrors to S3

2011-11-15 Thread Ben Howard
Blueprint changed by Ben Howard:

Whiteboard changed:
  Rationale:
S3 is a faster, more scalable technology that allows us to reduce costs and
increase availability for EC2 users.

  Assumption:
    * Running on-EC2 mirrors is expensive and presents availability challenges.
    * on-EC2 mirrors have limited bandwidth and thus speeds can be affected by
load
    * S3 has very high availability
    * S3 intra-region bandwidth is free
    * on-EC2 mirrors results in bandwidth charges when users use a mirror
outside the availability zone
    * S3 is extremely fast. Generally speeds to S3 access are near-native
    * Amazon has asked for us to host our mirrors on S3
    * Uploads to S3 are free

- A prototyped-S3 mirror will be shown at UDS.

- PROOF OF CONCEPT MIRROR ONLY. ]
-
-
-
- Q. 'LAN' bandwidth access to the region mirrors is currently free already,
no? -- Daviey
- A. All upload and intra-zone transit is free.
-
- Q. How do you keep people out of EC2 from access?
- A. Bucket policies enable restricting access to the Amazon CIDR address.
-
- Comments:
- - Can this whiteboard be pre-filed with some examples of how others have
implemented this?
-    * AFAIK, there is only one implementation of S3 buckets. Most other
examples that I know of use S3 as a storage backend, while having an EC2
instance front the S3 storage. Amazon Linux AMI is the only pure S3
backend/frontend solution.
-
- - How would this work?
-   * There are a number of ways to push out a repository using existing tools.
s3fuse (albeit rather buggy) allows you to mount a s3 bucket as file system.
s3cmd allows for local to remote synchronization. However, in order to build
something that scales well, you need something that uses multiple connections
and pushes multiple files at once (i.e. threading and boto python library)
-    * Example syncronization code can be found at
lp:~[utlemming]:/+junk/s3repo_tool (this code will be used to populate the
prototyped-S3 mirror for UDS.
-
- --
-
- Examples:
- Amazon Linux AMI currently uses S3 for backing the mirrors. The design is
more or less:
- - One bucket per region.
- - Buckets are named off of the DNS CNAME, i.e.
us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com

[Blueprint servercloud-p-build-marshall] Pushing Ubuntu to the Cloud

+ [smoser] cloud-init should look for archive.local and support apt-proxy: TODO
+ [utlemming] Eucalytpus sync script: TODO
+ [utlemming] Upstream changes to live-build: TODO

Rationale: There is significant value to both the community and paid
customers in having Canonical own and maintaining images on major cloud-
  vendors.

    * The current system was design for publishing images to one vendors in
multiple regions
    * Amazon AWS is growing with new services and new regions, which may stress
the current system

  UDS Deciusions:
To provide multiple ways for different cloud vendors to consume the official
Ubuntu images. The four methods decided on are:
  1. Push Ubuntu images to all EC2 regions
  2. Provide a public glance server for OpenStack Deployments. OpenStack to
make changes to support multiple glance registry servers.
  3. Provide a sync script for people to pull the latest images for OpenStack
  4. Provide a sync script for people to pull the latest images for Eucalpytus

** Description changed:

Same as bug 303276, but last comment there says to reopen a bug. I don't
see how to do that. I've put my attachments there.

The caps lock LED is flashing often when I boot up or reactivate after a
suspend.
If I turn off x61 then reboot in safe mode, then it doesn't happen until I
leave it.
  I have a wireless N router.

[Bug 890569] [NEW] Kernel NULL pointer deference in __d_move from vfs_stat ioctl

2011-11-15 Thread Pauli
Public bug reported:

__d_move crashes in second d_ancestor check where it finds that one of parents
for dentry variable is NULL.
Call comes from sysfs_lookup-d_move-__d_move. The vfs_stat ioctl was
initiated from Xorg quickly after I tried to switch user.

I have take picture from oops report but I don't have cable for the
camera. But I will upload the picture later when I get my hands on the
cable. Too bad console font was a bit too large to capture the begin of
the oops report.

[Bug 888358] Re: Several security updates for Mahara

2011-11-15 Thread Steve Beattie
Hi Melissa,

In the oneiric debdiff, the patch for CVE-2011-2773 is significantly
different from the one for prior versions (it removes
addtoinstitution.php outright where the others add the session check).
Based on perusing bug 800032, I'm assuming this is intended and will
adjust the changelog to match.

Assigning the tasks to myself. Thanks

[Bug 890348] Re: The first window is not fully translated

2011-11-15 Thread Phil. V
Thanks for your bug report. I reproduced this on my machine, and from
what I can tell the untranslated words in that screenshot don't exist in
the french translation project for apport, even though the project is
reported fully translated, so I think they should be added.

[Bug 888358] Re: Several security updates for Mahara

2011-11-15 Thread François Marier
Precise has synced with Sid so it's all good now.

Steve: you're right, that's intended. In 1.4, due to a bug, that script
was unreachable from the UI so it can easily be removed.

** Changed in: mahara (Ubuntu Precise)
