[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-02-17 Thread Christopher Kyle Horton
@zzecool There's testing that was done which shows empirically that
intellihide confused users who were new to Ubuntu. You can read more on
that and the decision to remove it here: https://lists.launchpad.net
/unity-design/msg07665.html

We can't be sure that users will get used to something which will likely
confuse them off the bat, because if it's not obvious right away, they
might be inclined to give up on it and go back to whatever OS they were
using before. We certainly don't want that, and we can't force users to
try to figure out their interface. Not everyone is skilled enough with
computers or patient enough for that. That's why the default is always
visible, so they always know where it is.

The reason autohide can stay is because it is considered an advanced
feature. If they are so inclined, they can find the autohide option in
System Settings, where the options even describe how to reveal the
launcher and give additional settings. By this point, the user should be
sufficiently informed as to what's going on when they let the launcher
hide, so they're not left wondering where it went. And if they find it
gives them issues, they can always reach System Settings from the power
cog and reset to the always visible default.

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-02-17 Thread zzecool
Leaving the "never hide" as the default behavior will not gonna confuse
any user .

In the same way of thinking "autohide" is even worst because you start
on a desktop with no launcher at all , if not by mistake the novice user
will not be able to find the launcher. All the other reasons its on my
first comment above.

A proper test is if you test the Desktop with some "new comers " that
didn't knew anything about Unity and if they found "intelihide"
confusing , then you have to be sure that this users will keep using
Unity and test em again after some days - months.

Im afraid that the statement "confused the users" and will result in
"visual clutter" sound like an excuse where i cant see how "Autohide"
is better than "Intelihide" . Even the name makes it better and
point the intelligent characteristic of the feature.

[Bug 934786] [NEW] show desktop icon when selected, appears at top of launcher

2012-02-17 Thread Daniel Brainard
Public bug reported:

When selecting the show desktop icon to appear in launcher through
compiz, it appears at the top of the launcher rather than at the bottom.
I'm not sure if this is how it's supposed to be designed, but it does
not seem to be consistent with the intentions of unity.

[Bug 818830] Re: [Sandy Bridge] serious power regression from kernel 3.0.0-6 to 3.0.0-7 (rc6 disabled)

2012-02-17 Thread Steven Keys
So...This patched kernel is working great. Here are my concerns moving
forward: 1) We need more people to test it and report back. 2) We need
to push for this fix to be incorporated into the kernel that ships with
Ubuntu/Xubuntu 12.04 (an LTS release)! 3) I suspect that this patched
kernel does not contain the aspm power fix that was released several
weeks ago. This fix combined with that one would be very useful. 4)
After this new fix is well-tested and confirmed to work well on all
Sandy Bridge systems, RC6 should definitely be enabled by default. This
is huge.

[Bug 934770] [NEW] Inadvertant mouse movement & click is causing cursor to stick on left click

2012-02-17 Thread Doug McMahon
Public bug reported:

Not sure if proper source but when downgrading can't duplicate at will.
(dr to libutouch-geis1_2.2.3-0ubuntu1, though haven't given a long test
to inadvertent occurrences

Recently here & with others the left click 'select' has been 'randomly'
getting stuck on, causing the cursor to select everything in it's path
& otherwise be unresponsive, ie. nothing can be clicked on.

At least here the effect lasts for about 20 -30 sec's, when it happens
if stopping all activity the cursor & control return in that time frame

It is also seen on occasion as a 'stuck' grab, same deal, nothing can be
done till something releases. Additionally I've a few instances where
suddenly the left click is non-functional, again control returns within
20 -30 sec's

With a little practice have been able to cause this to happen within a few
attempts, basically moving the cursor with left button depressed (highlight)
combined with a small tap.
So will attach 2 video's with short descriptions

It's also possible disabling the tap to click in g-s-d may prevent this,
again no long term test

[Bug 836480] Re: CPU fan runs very very fast ubuntu 11.10 dell xpsl702x

2012-02-17 Thread Amit Rana
Yesterday I was trying to solve some other problem, following steps
given on this page http://www.ivegotavirus.com/blog/2011/11/06/how-to-
get-optimus-working-on-ubuntu-11-10-oneiric/

Soon after step 3) sudo apt-get install bumblebee, fan started working
fine.

Is this related? Now fan works fine. I haven't finished the steps
mentioned on the page. Just installed bumblebee, now fan is working
normally.

I also keep ubuntu uptodate so not sure if that is also related. I am
using 3.0.0-16-generic x86_64

[Bug 934770] Re: Inadvertant mouse movement & click is causing cursor to stick on left click

2012-02-17 Thread Doug McMahon
This is a file opened in gedit, took a couple of attempts to initiate
Once the cursor stuck on left click the all cursor movement just highlighted
text even when leaving gedit.
Nothing else on the Desktop could be clicked on, launcher, Desktop items, panel
items.
Again after a short period of inactivity control did return

[Bug 934770] Re: Inadvertant mouse movement & click is causing cursor to stick on left click

2012-02-17 Thread Doug McMahon
This was simply on the Desktop, once the left click 'stuck' I've released the
left mouse button & am simply just moving the cursor with the touchpad. The
cursor will not release & nothing else can be clicked on.
After the short stop control is returned

[Bug 934716] Re: Ubuntu 11.10 backlight problem nvidia geforce 8400m G graphic card

2012-02-17 Thread RealBezo
I installed gnome, xfce and log on to gnome classic, gnome and xfce,
there is no problem with these desktop environments. The function keys
and backligt works properly. I think i would use gnome or xfce instead
of unity. People say that unity is a disaster, it is not a disaster but
still a bad desktop environment. It is buggy and not a user friendly
environment.
