[Blueprint servercloud-p-hdp-hadoop] Ubuntu Server - Hadoop
Blueprint changed by James Page: Whiteboard changed: + Status 20120411 + + Hadoop 1.0.2 uploaded to dev archive. + + Charms for hbase, hadoop and hive written for Ubuntu precise. + Status 20120603 Testing packages avaliable for hadoop, hbase, pig and hadoop-zookeeper in http://launchpad.net/~hadoop-ubuntu/+archive/testing sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hadoop-ubuntu/testing Juju charms avaliable for hadoop, hbase and zookeeper: lp:~charmers/charms/precise/zookeeper/trunk lp:~charmers/charms/precise/hadoop/trunk lp:~charmers/charms/precise/hbase/trunk Note that by default the zookeeper charm will use the zookeeper packages from the main archive not the PPA - see the charm config.yaml file for details on how to use the PPA's with these charms. Dev PPA also now hosting backports of all packages for Ubuntu 11.10. Status 20122501 Dev packages avaliable for hadoop, hive, pig, hbase and hadoop-zookeeper in http://launchpad.net/~hadoop-ubuntu/+archive/dev sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hadoop-ubuntu/dev Target versions of Hadoop components: - hadoop-1.0.1 + hadoop-1.0.2 hcatalog-0.2.0 pig-0.9.1 hbase-0.92.0 hive-0.8.1 zookeeper-3.4.3 Package naming: hadoop hcatalog pig hbase hive Packages that target partner CANNOT have the same name as packages in the main archive so zookeeper will be: hadoop-zookeeper This will prevent and conflicts with the zookeeper package in the main archive. Assumptions: Packaging will use bigtop as a base. - reuse of control file structure will help support bigtop packages in juju charms as and when they support precise. Java will NOT be rebuilt during the package build process. Native libraries will be rebuilt during the package build process. Q: What does this mean for the hive embedded in hcatalog (via hcatalog-0.2.0/hive/external)? I'm guessing we just use the hdp-hive package we create. Patches may be required for native build components. Debconf configuration in packages is useful for Juju charms and should be applied where appropriate. --- Debconf currently in use: namenode, jobtracker and hdfs_dir Binary distributions will be used from upstream (no source build by default). Q: Exactly what does this mean in this context? Binary distributions of ... Are these the jar files inside the hortonworks/apache source (e.g. ./hive-0.7.1+/lib/javaewah-0.3.jar? A: So most of the apache projects ship a binary distribution tarball which includes all of the compile Java etc so we should not build from source - just re-use these jars etc... Challenges: hcatalog not packaged in bigtop trunk (need to check branches) JAVA_HOME and use of openjdk-6/7? JAVA_HOME detection - bigtop use a specific package for this (bigtop-utils) which tries to guess - might be worth re-using. java-package as recommended approach to re-packaging Oracle java for Ubuntu (generates Debian packaging from upstream binary distro). Kerberos security - probably actually needs to be a charm configuration option to secure a cluster. Q: For Kerberos, do we have the necessary dependencies to get this done? If so, I can do the charm work.j Q: Re: Kerberos. We may need to really look into this as this will end up affecting not only hadoop but, all of the other parts ( hive, pig, etc. ) as well. This can really complicate the packaging/charming as well so, we may not have time to get it all done in this cycle. Just my thoughts. MultiArch native libraries in hdp-hadoop package - should not must. Hive contains patches for hcatalog support - we need to work these in somehow (maybe a overlay to the binary re-distribution). hcatalog: External dependency on mysql-connector? and maybe mysql? No binary distribution - only source so will need to be built locally to produce release tarbal. [Bug 914164] Re: [MIR] horizon
I performed a shallow review of horizon: CVE history: no, but the code is new. That said, upstream is very responsive and the server team is committed to it and active with upstream. Embeds some jquery scripts from jquery-goodies (they are newer than what is in the archive) in horizon/static/horizon/js/jquery/ Not lintian clean No upstart jobs or initscripts, no dbus services or setuid programs. No cron jobs. No sudoers fragments. Uses python-django, so a lot of security features are enabled (CSRF protections (verified in use), etc) Allows downloading of EC2 and OpenStack credentials. The openstack .rc file that is downloaded prompts for the password, so that is good (though the OS_USERNAME and OS_TENANT_NAME are in there). The EC2 credentials give the EC2_ACCESS_KEY and EC2_SECRET_KEY. This is all delivered over http. The http://openstack/settings/* pages should probably warn that this is happening over an insecure connection. Setting up apache to use ssl and accessing horizon works fine. horizon connects to keystone via http://, so it needs to be on a protected LAN. http://openstack/nova/images_and_snapshots/ gave me a full traceback. The packaging should be adjusted to hide these as it might provide information to an attacker. Specifically at the bottom of the page I see: You're seeing this error because you have DEBUG = True in your Django settings file. Change that to False, and Django will display a standard 500 page. Other pages with tracebacks (related to usage I think): http://openstack/nova/instances_and_volumes/ http://openstack/nova/images_and_snapshots/ Conditional ACK provided the following are addressed: - set 'DEBUG = False' - while an administrator should know that setting up horizon for access over http:// would expose credentials, it would be good if the settings pages warned if the user was accessing the urls via http:// in some manner - a release note should be added that horizon needs to connect to keystone over a protected network (LP: #978963) ** Changed in: horizon (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = In Progress ** Changed in: horizon (Ubuntu) Assignee: Jamie Strandboge (jdstrand) = Chuck Short (zulcss) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to horizon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/914164 Title: [MIR] horizon To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/horizon/+bug/914164/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 832507] Re: console.log grows indefinitely
I think this would need a libringbuffer as nova would need to read the same file in get_console_output. When I first looked at this in September, I could not find such a thing, or any accepted on-disk format. The python code in my patch could be a good starting point, but there a couple of things I think needed to be added. First, a magic to identify the file; and second, some kind of mutex or locking mechanism to cover the head and tail pointers and prevent slow readers from reading past the join. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nova in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/832507 Title: console.log grows indefinitely To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nova/+bug/832507/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

It seems a reasonable thing for upstream to accept. We have workarounds for precise, right? (If not, then I should be giving this a shot right now) If so I'll taking a stab at this after release. We don't have a reasonable work around really. in 11.10 we had one that seemed to work. in 12.04 that solution ate 100% cpu (i think) so we backed it out, i think. A real solution would be nice. [Bug 979223] [NEW] etckeeper tries/fails to autocommit on clean trees with shelved changes
Public bug reported: I have etckeeper managing /etc with bzr, and I have some pending configuration-changes shelved on one of my servers, but the tree is clean (and bzr version-info --check-clean reports clean: True). Because etckeeper unclean just checks whether bzr status output any newlines, the `1 shelf exists...' output from bzr status makes etckeeper think that the tree is unclean and needs an autocommit in both `post-install' and `pre-install' actions. bzr thinks otherwise, though, and `fails' to perform what it knows to be an empty commit; so I see two failures every time I install, remove, or upgrade any package. [Bug 588523] Re: Autofs5 fails on cascading/hierarchical mounts
We tried autofs5.0.5 (natty) and autofs5.0.6 (oneiric), but the problem persisted (on 32-bit Lucid). Then we tried autofs4.1.4 (karmic) - same version as mentioned by dezibelz - and the problems went away (still on 32-bit Lucid). [Bug 578536] Re: when stopped, automount orphans some mounts
Sorry for the delay in review. The changes look good, and I'm happy to accept them into -proposed, with the exception of the changelog; the changelog should be “human readable”, and so needs a brief summary of the user-visible behaviour it fixes (in addition to the bug link). Something along the lines of “Fixes orphaning of mounts when stopping autofs” would be fine. [Bug 588523] Re: Autofs5 fails on cascading/hierarchical mounts
By the way, importance = Wishlist ??? This is clearly a regression, ie. something that used to work as expected, and now doesn't work as expected anymore. Set the importance as low as you want, but please don't make it look like a feature request! Furthermore, the bug heat and # of people affected by this bug are in fact higher than most of the importance=Low bugs in autofs ...
