[Blueprint servercloud-p-hdp-hadoop] Ubuntu Server - Hadoop

2012-04-11 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
+ Status 20120411
+
+ Hadoop 1.0.2 uploaded to dev archive.
+
+ Charms for hbase, hadoop and hive written for Ubuntu precise.
+
  Status 20120603

Testing packages avaliable for hadoop, hbase, pig and hadoop-zookeeper
  in http://launchpad.net/~hadoop-ubuntu/+archive/testing

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hadoop-ubuntu/testing

Juju charms avaliable for hadoop, hbase and zookeeper:

  lp:~charmers/charms/precise/zookeeper/trunk
  lp:~charmers/charms/precise/hadoop/trunk
  lp:~charmers/charms/precise/hbase/trunk

Note that by default the zookeeper charm will use the zookeeper packages from
the main archive not the PPA - see the charm config.yaml file for details on
how to use the
  PPA's with these charms.

Dev PPA also now hosting backports of all packages for Ubuntu 11.10.

  Status 20122501

Dev packages avaliable for hadoop, hive, pig, hbase and hadoop-zookeeper
  in http://launchpad.net/~hadoop-ubuntu/+archive/dev

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hadoop-ubuntu/dev

  Target versions of Hadoop components:

- hadoop-1.0.1
+ hadoop-1.0.2
  hcatalog-0.2.0
  pig-0.9.1
  hbase-0.92.0
  hive-0.8.1
  zookeeper-3.4.3

  Package naming:

  hadoop
  hcatalog
  pig
  hbase
  hive

Packages that target partner CANNOT have the same name as packages in
the main archive so zookeeper will be:

  hadoop-zookeeper

This will prevent and conflicts with the zookeeper package in the main
  archive.

  Assumptions:

Packaging will use bigtop as a base.
   - reuse of control file structure will help support bigtop packages in juju
charms as and when they support precise.
Java will NOT be rebuilt during the package build process.
Native libraries will be rebuilt during the package build process.
Q: What does this mean for the hive embedded in hcatalog (via
hcatalog-0.2.0/hive/external)? I'm guessing we just use the hdp-hive package we
create.
Patches may be required for native build components.
Debconf configuration in packages is useful for Juju charms and should be
applied where appropriate.
--- Debconf currently in use: namenode, jobtracker and hdfs_dir
Binary distributions will be used from upstream (no source build by default).
Q: Exactly what does this mean in this context? Binary distributions of ...
Are these the jar files inside the hortonworks/apache source (e.g.
./hive-0.7.1+/lib/javaewah-0.3.jar?
A: So most of the apache projects ship a binary distribution tarball which
includes all of the compile Java etc so we should not build from source - just
re-use these jars etc...

  Challenges:

hcatalog not packaged in bigtop trunk (need to check branches)
  JAVA_HOME and use of openjdk-6/7? JAVA_HOME detection - bigtop use a
specific package for this (bigtop-utils) which tries to guess - might be worth
re-using.
java-package as recommended approach to re-packaging Oracle java for Ubuntu
(generates Debian packaging from upstream binary distro).
Kerberos security - probably actually needs to be a charm configuration
option to secure a cluster.
Q: For Kerberos, do we have the necessary dependencies to get this done? If
so, I can do the charm work.j
Q: Re: Kerberos. We may need to really look into this as this will end up
affecting not only hadoop but, all of the other parts ( hive, pig, etc. ) as
well. This can really complicate the packaging/charming as well so, we may not
have time to get it all done in this cycle. Just my thoughts.
MultiArch native libraries in hdp-hadoop package - should not must.
Hive contains patches for hcatalog support - we need to work these in somehow
(maybe a overlay to the binary re-distribution).

  hcatalog:
External dependency on mysql-connector? and maybe mysql?
No binary distribution - only source so will need to be built locally to
produce release tarbal.

[Bug 978698] [NEW] sqlite maps are broken in postfix 2.9.1-2

2012-04-11 Thread David Olrik
Public bug reported:

dict_sqlite.so compiled incorrectly in postfix 2.9.1-2. (Ubuntu precise
12.04)

When querying with postmap I get undefined symbol: sqlite3_open

Looking at the code I found these errors:

- In Makefile.in dict_sqlite.so is made to link against Postgresql instead of
sqlite3.
- dict_sqlite.so is missing from dynamicmaps.cf
- dict_sqlite.so is not linked against libpthread as per
http://www.postfix.org/SQLITE_README.html

The attached patch fixes these issues.

[Bug 978708] Re: [Precise] puppet is vulnerable to CVE-2012-1906 and CVE-2012-1986 through CVE-2012-1989

2012-04-11 Thread Tyler Hicks
The diff between the output of 'cd /usr/share/puppet-testsuite rake
spec unit' ran under puppet-2.7.11-1ubuntu1 and puppet-2.7.11-1ubuntu2
(which is simply the debdiff attached above applied).

Note that there are many false positives from failed Windows tests. I'm
not sure why these tests are being ran, but it looks like
Puppet.features.microsoft_windows is not testing out to be false.

 Hi.

Hi Robert,

please check your subscription.
I'm still told that you're not subscribed!

Mine output after patch looks same (attached).

in fact, it's different.
It's no more an overflow error, but an I/O error!

have you patched your 2.6.1 or used trunk + the patch?
in the latter case, I'd be interested in a trace without the patch, to see
if we're still on the overflow side.

integrate ceph charm with openstack charms: TODO
  libvirt changes needed: TODO

+ [nijaba] correctly message technology preview for non-supported bits: DONE
investigate apache + 100 continue support for rados S3 GW: TODO
push nagios and collectd plugins into Ubuntu/Debian/Upstream: POSTPONED
setup automated build recipe against upstream source: POSTPONED
import upstream test suite into archive: POSTPONED
[sconklin] ext4/btrfs/xfs testing in QA: POSTPONED

  Notes:
qemu-kvm librados builds are blocked on bug 932898 being fix released.

No formal spec needed IMO, this is just a pile of straight forward
  actions.

   * gceph is not reasonable to be in main (upstream doesnt want to
  support)

Today rbd is loaded loaded at runtime

   - MIR librbd and librados for qemu/kvm
    - compile qemu-kvm with ceph (rbd, rados) block device support, see:
   - MIR all of ceph for hosting ceph
   - include latest libvirt rbd support (for rbd authentication)
   - Existing Openstack Support
     - Nova since cactus can use CEPH for block
     - Diablo added glance support for CEPH for image storage
   - Dreamhost using mainline BTRFS and debian kernel for current deployment
  - Dreamhost launching at scale in a few weeks
  - CEPH is an independent business unit under Dreamhost
  - Dreamhost using fastcgi + apache for rados gateway (can use nginx, too)

   Dependencies:
   modfast-cgi
  Concerns;
  - Upstream makes a release every 2 weeks
  - No stable release branches upstream
  - Limited deployment outside Dreamhost
  - unencrypted over the wire
    - apps can implement security on top of it
    - IPv6 is supported
  Additional Opportunities:
  - Integrate tightly with OpenStack in packaging
  - Add support for ceph in juju openstack charms
  - BTRFS ideal, XFS also working well, ext4 missing large xattr support
  - Upstream asserts that CEPH is under heavy development (cmdline programs
remind user at every execution)
   - in the openstack use case, for kvm, there is no need for kernel code at all
    - if we want to support xen, it would require using the block device kernel
code for rdb
  Support Targets:
  - RBD

[Bug 978963] [NEW] add release note that OpenStack should be used on a protected network

2012-04-11 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

Much of OpenStack is hard-coded to use http instead of https. Of particular
interest is keystone which is the identity service for OpenStack.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseNotes/UbuntuCloud should state
that accessing OpenStack over an unprotected network may expose credentials and
other information. This is true (at least) when:
* keystone is on a separate server from the other OpenStack components
* horizon (the OpenStack Dashboard) is on a different system than keystone
* users access OpenStack remotely
* users access horizon (the OpenStack dashboard) over http

[Bug 914164] Re: [MIR] horizon

2012-04-11 Thread Jamie Strandboge
This: while an administrator should know that setting up horizon for
access over http:// would expose credentials, it would be good if the
settings pages warned if the user was accessing the urls via http:// in
some manner. If it is not fixed, it would be acceptable to mention it
in a release note.

[Bug 914164] Re: [MIR] horizon

2012-04-11 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I performed a shallow review of horizon:

CVE history: no, but the code is new. That said, upstream is very
responsive and the server team is committed to it and active with
upstream.

Embeds some jquery scripts from jquery-goodies (they are newer than what
is in the archive) in horizon/static/horizon/js/jquery/

Not lintian clean

No upstart jobs or initscripts, no dbus services or setuid programs. No
cron jobs. No sudoers fragments.

Uses python-django, so a lot of security features are enabled (CSRF
protections (verified in use), etc)

Allows downloading of EC2 and OpenStack credentials. The openstack .rc
file that is downloaded prompts for the password, so that is good
(though the OS_USERNAME and OS_TENANT_NAME are in there). The EC2
credentials give the EC2_ACCESS_KEY and EC2_SECRET_KEY. This is all
delivered over http. The http://openstack/settings/* pages should
probably warn that this is happening over an insecure connection.
Setting up apache to use ssl and accessing horizon works fine.

horizon connects to keystone via http://, so it needs to be on a
protected LAN.

http://openstack/nova/images_and_snapshots/ gave me a full traceback.
The packaging should be adjusted to hide these as it might provide
information to an attacker. Specifically at the bottom of the page I
see: You're seeing this error because you have DEBUG = True in your
Django settings file. Change that to False, and Django will display a
standard 500 page.

Other pages with tracebacks (related to usage I think):
http://openstack/nova/instances_and_volumes/
http://openstack/nova/images_and_snapshots/

Conditional ACK provided the following are addressed:
- set 'DEBUG = False'
- while an administrator should know that setting up horizon for access over
http:// would expose credentials, it would be good if the settings pages warned
if the user was accessing the urls via http:// in some manner
- a release note should be added that horizon needs to connect to keystone over
a protected network (LP: #978963)

[Bug 832507] Re: console.log grows indefinitely

2012-04-11 Thread Scott Moser
Serge,
The reason for the qemu-kvm task is that we think qemu-kvm is really the
ultimate right place to add a '-serial ringbuffer:640k,file=/path/to/file' flag.
All the other attempts are more hacky, but if upstream kvm had this , libvirt
could expose it, and openstack could use it.
I do not know whether or not it would be accepted upstream.

Re: [Bug 832507] Re: console.log grows indefinitely

2012-04-11 Thread Serge Hallyn
 Serge,
The reason for the qemu-kvm task is that we think qemu-kvm is really the
ultimate right place to add a '-serial ringbuffer:640k,file=/path/to/file'
 flag.
All the other attempts are more hacky, but if upstream kvm had this ,
libvirt could expose it, and openstack could use it.
I do not know whether or not it would be accepted upstream.

Thanks, Scott.

It seems a reasonable thing for upstream to accept. We have workarounds for
precise, right? (If not, then I should be giving this a shot right now)
If so I'll taking a stab at this after release.

[Bug 832507] Re: console.log grows indefinitely

2012-04-11 Thread Robie Basak
I think this would need a libringbuffer as nova would need to read the
same file in get_console_output. When I first looked at this in
September, I could not find such a thing, or any accepted on-disk
format. The python code in my patch could be a good starting point, but
there a couple of things I think needed to be added. First, a magic to
identify the file; and second, some kind of mutex or locking mechanism
to cover the head and tail pointers and prevent slow readers from
reading past the join.

in 11.10 we had one that seemed to work.
in 12.04 that solution ate 100% cpu (i think) so we backed it out, i
think.

A real solution would be nice.

[Bug 979223] [NEW] etckeeper tries/fails to autocommit on clean trees with shelved changes

2012-04-11 Thread Joshua Judson Rosen
Public bug reported:

I have etckeeper managing /etc with bzr, and I have some pending
configuration-changes shelved on one of my servers, but the tree is
clean (and bzr version-info --check-clean reports clean: True).
Because etckeeper unclean just checks whether bzr status output any
newlines, the `1 shelf exists...' output from bzr status makes
etckeeper think that the tree is unclean and needs an autocommit in both
`post-install' and `pre-install' actions. bzr thinks otherwise, though,
and `fails' to perform what it knows to be an empty commit; so I see two
failures every time I install, remove, or upgrade any package.

Shouldn't etckeeper be using bzr version-info --check-clean to
determine whether the tree is `unclean'?

[Bug 857294] Re: Creating hotspot leads to endless connect/disconnect loop

2012-04-11 Thread Ian
Is there a reason that ubuntu6 isn't in the 11.10 repositories?

With ubuntu5.1, which is the latest one there, I get the same
'disconnects within seconds' problem as reported here.

[Bug 974584] Re: celery tests fail on parallel testing instances

2012-04-11 Thread Gary Poster
This is easily and repeatably duplicatable on in my lxc lucid container.
The error for the last test (with the multiprocessing SemLock OSError
seems the most likely to be a shared root cause to me. Interestingly,
the OSError was slightly different for me, with a newer lxc: OSError:
[Errno 38] Function not implemented. I checked the syslog and some
random other log files, without really knowing where to look, and saw
nothing of interest.

As you'd expect from the traceback, you can repeat this error with a
single Python call to the standard library.

 from multiprocessing import synchronize
 synchronize.Lock()
Traceback (most recent call last):
File stdin, line 1, in module
  File /usr/lib/python2.6/multiprocessing/synchronize.py, line 117, in
__init__
SemLock.__init__(self, SEMAPHORE, 1, 1)
File /usr/lib/python2.6/multiprocessing/synchronize.py, line 49, in __init__
sl = self._semlock = _multiprocessing.SemLock(kind, value, maxvalue)
OSError: [Errno 38] Function not implemented

38 is ENOSYS

I talked with hallyn and this is an lxc issue. Adding this line to the
container's fstab will fix the problem:
none dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0

He is updating the ubuntu template with this change.

** Changed in: launchpad
   Status: Triaged = Invalid

** Also affects: lxc (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Summary changed:

- celery tests fail on parallel testing instances
+ Semaphores cannot be created in lxc container

** Description changed:

- The same three tests failed consistently over several runs:
+ from multiprocessing import synchronize
+  synchronize.Lock()
+ Traceback (most recent call last):
+ File stdin, line 1, in module
+ File /usr/lib/python2.6/multiprocessing/synchronize.py, line 117, in
__init__
+ SemLock.__init__(self, SEMAPHORE, 1, 1)
+ File /usr/lib/python2.6/multiprocessing/synchronize.py, line 49, in
__init__
+ sl = self._semlock = _multiprocessing.SemLock(kind, value, maxvalue)
+ OSError: [Errno 38] Function not implemented

+ Thanks to hallyn, there's a workaround and a fix: adding this line to the
container's fstab will fix the problem:
+ none dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0

[Bug 979414] [NEW] juju bootstrap failed - 12.04 beta

2012-04-11 Thread Mike
Public bug reported:

Attempting to configure MAAS in a virtual environment. MAAS installed
and configured fine. Steps on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/MAAS/Juju are a little confusing:

In your favourite text editor, open the file:
~/.juju/environments.yaml

This directory does not exist. Robbie, the author of these pages,
responded that I was to run 'juju bootstrap' first. Running that does
generate a sample file, but it contains very different values than the
example on the above document.

After changing all values to match the values in the documentation,
'juju bootstrap' fails with:

[Bug 588523] Re: Autofs5 fails on cascading/hierarchical mounts

2012-04-11 Thread KennoVO
We tried autofs5.0.5 (natty) and autofs5.0.6 (oneiric), but the problem
persisted (on 32-bit Lucid). Then we tried autofs4.1.4 (karmic) - same
version as mentioned by dezibelz - and the problems went away (still on
32-bit Lucid). But it's obviously not ideal to be running an old
unsupported version like that...

Anyhow, bottom line is that it's not fixed yet.

[Bug 578536] Re: when stopped, automount orphans some mounts

2012-04-11 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Sorry for the delay in review. The changes look good, and I'm happy to
accept them into -proposed, with the exception of the changelog; the
changelog should be “human readable”, and so needs a brief summary of
the user-visible behaviour it fixes (in addition to the bug link).
Something along the lines of “Fixes orphaning of mounts when stopping
autofs” would be fine.

I've rejected this from the natty-proposed queue; please upload again
with the more verbose changelog.

[Bug 588523] Re: Autofs5 fails on cascading/hierarchical mounts

2012-04-11 Thread KennoVO
By the way, importance = Wishlist ??? This is clearly a regression, ie.
something that used to work as expected, and now doesn't work as
expected anymore. Set the importance as low as you want, but please
don't make it look like a feature request!

Furthermore, the bug heat and # of people affected by this bug are in
fact higher than most of the importance=Low bugs in autofs ...

BTW. using version 4 as a workaround is even worse than I thought
because it doesn't support direct mapping.

[Bug 967091] Re: Wrong tint with Nvidia after upgrading to 11.2

2012-04-11 Thread Jochen Fahrner
@darthanubis: it's not necessarily the Nvidia driver. There are several
possibilites for this fault.
1. Flashplayer is calling functions in libvdpau (the interface for Nvidia HW
acceleration) with wrong arguments.
2. libvdpau is calling driver functions with wrong arguments
3. Nvidia driver is faulty.

You don't see this bug with nouveau driver, because noveau offers no hw
acceleration.

[Bug 969334] Re: Support of Sentelic touchpad in Asus K53U notebook

2012-04-11 Thread Eric Miao
@Jim, I've uploaded a testing kernel at
http://people.canonical.com/~ycmiao/lp969334/, please help give it a try
and see if that works for you. This is really late in the cycle and we
cannot guarantee that the feature will be merged, but a verification of
whether the patchset is OK will really be appreciated. Thanks.
