I'm not sure about this one. I'd have to see your 'sensors' output.
Also, you could try the plugin from trunk, as there appear to be some
differences between the 1.4 branch and trunk:
http://munin-monitoring.org/browser/trunk/plugins/node.d.linux/iostat_ios.in#L35

 munin plugin diskstats broken:
2012/05/09-07:15:03 [27035] Error output from diskstats:

This was fixed in Bug #872217, but you still have to remove that state
file, as mentioned as the workaround in the bug report. Then the
errors should disappear.

 munin plugin iostat broken:
 2012/05/09-07:15:04 [27035] Error output from iostat_ios:
2012/05/09-07:15:04 [27035] Byte order is not compatible at

 line 218
 2012/05/09-07:15:04 [27035] Service 'iostat_ios' exited with status 25/0.

This might be fixed the same as the diskstats one. You might also
consider just disabling iostat_ios, since diskstats makes it
redundant; see Bug #919429 for that discussion. It is marked legacy in
the latest version upstream:
http://munin-monitoring.org/browser/trunk/plugins/node.d.linux/iostat_ios.in#L35

[Bug 997575] [NEW] nis doesn't make kdm wait for it before starting in kubuntu

2012-05-10 Thread antlarr
Public bug reported:

In Kubuntu, kdm starts before ypbind, which can give failed login errors
while ypbind is executed in the background.

The file /etc/init/start-ypbind.conf blocks processes that need ypbind.
It contains the lines:

start on (starting autofs or starting am-utils or starting gdm
or starting lightdm or starting atd)

Just adding or starting kdm fixes the problem.

This is on nis 3.17-32ubuntu4

[Bug 522509] Re: [FFE] tftpd-hpa doesn't start on boot

2012-05-10 Thread AllenS
Hi Diego

I added service tftpd-hpa restart as an up line to eth0 and it
worked! Thank you very much.

But even better still you pointed me in the right direction to get to
the bottom of the problem. My interface file looked like this:

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
#up service tftpd-hpa restart
#NetworkManager#iface eth0 inet dhcp

I moved the iface eth0 inet dhcp bit onto a new line and tftpd-hpa now
works perfectly from boot. I don't know how the interface file got
screwed up like that because I hadn't touched until you mentioned it.

To be fair I installed this system with a daily build of precise around
the time of beta 2, so perhaps that's why.

Anyway all working now so thanks again for the help.

Allen

[Blueprint servercloud-q-server-benchmark-and-performance] ARM Server Benchmarking and Performance

2012-05-10 Thread MMorana
Blueprint changed by MMorana:

Whiteboard set to:
From Etherpad:

Workload tests:
 - bzr branch lp:server-workload-testing
 - Currently done and maintained by Canonical
 - Linaro could help getting it to work across the ARM boards available there
as well as with LAVA
openssl: openssl-test? gnu-tls?
ARM Workload:
 - Linaro is looking at extracting the power consumed when stressing the board
support
 - It'd be useful to benchmark not only the test results, but the power that
was consumed during the test run
Areas to investigate while checking for performance:
 - Not that clear at the moment
 - Generally looking at the usual test cases/benchmarks for a start
 - One way would be to get feedback from the hw vendors to understand what
would be the priority
ACTION:
[rsalveti] Make sure we have a session at Linaro Connect to cover power usage
at the ARM boards during test case executions
IO/Storage: Ceph, Swift, Gluster?
Areas of focus on feature/functional side:
 - KVM
 - LXC
 - OpenMPI
Calxeda is interested in OpenMPI performance/testing.
From P:
As actual ARM server hardware begins to enter the marketplace, a
standardized way to test and benchmark performance must be developed and run
on all active platforms we support for ARM server.
http://www.phoronix-test-suite.com/
http://openbenchmarking.org/
Upcoming PTS tests: MySQL, TPCC MySQL, various SPEC tests (might not be
public), Unixbench, plus others (can also easily add in any others, just ask)
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/QA/Server
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/server-o-arm-image-qa
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/server-o-arm-image-validation
- membase?
- Ensure that multi-system testing setups are standardized
- weekly meeting to reveiw testing on #ubuntu-meeting (Thursdays 15:00 UTC)
ACTIONS:
- Automate testing [explore PTS documentation about batch-run options]
- Find an IPV6 testing tool
- Add a test for Membase
- Add a test for Hadoop and other workloads
- Explore stress/load testing (memtester, stress, kernel build test, netperf,
unix bench)
- Test on real hardware when available
- Compare P test results against O.
- AHCI testing
- Investigate PTS logging sensor data [Run any test(s) with MONITOR=all
environmental variable to see all sensors... or see included HTML/PDF
documentation... or run phoronix-test-suite system-sensors to see all
supported/unsupported sensors. Try latest PTS release for latest sensor
coverage.]

[Bug 997681] Re: lxc needs to depend on apparmor

2012-05-10 Thread Serge Hallyn
** Description changed:

lxc currently depends on libapparmor1, but not on apparmor. Add
apparmor to the lxc Depends: in both quantal and precise.
+
+ ===
+ SRU Justification
+ 1. Impact: apparmor transitions fail if apparmor is not installed
+ 2. Development fix: add apparmor to depends for lxc
+ 3. stable fix: same as development fix
+ 4. test case:
+sudo apt-get purge apparmor
+ sudo apt-get install lxc
+ sudo lxc-create -t ubuntu -n p1
+ sudo reboot
+ sudo lxc-start -n p1
+ 5. regression potential: we are adding apparmor as a dependency - no
regressions expected.

2012-05-10 Thread Serge Hallyn
** Description changed:

Same bug as in lxc-clone, occurs twice in lxc-start-ephemeral
+
+ SRU Justification
+ 1. Impact: container configuration files for ephemeral containers can be
corrupted
+ 2. Development fix: quote a variable containing a configuration line to avoid
expanding/globbing the contents
+ 3. Stable fix: same as development fix
+ 4. Test case:
+touch abc:abc
+sudo lxc-create -t ubuntu -n p1
+sudo lxc-start-ephemeral -o p1 -- /bin/bash
+ 5. Regression potential: the contents of the line are not supposed to be
expanded, so quoting $line is the riht thing to do and should cause no
regressions.

[1793012.835201] type=1400 audit(1336690883.803:534): apparmor=DENIED
operation=open parent=26571 profile=/usr/sbin/clamd
name=/proc/26820/status pid=26820 comm=clamd requested_mask=r
denied_mask=r fsuid=110 ouid=0

If I remove owner from the @{PROC}/[0-9]*/status line in the apparmor
policy, it works. I'm not sure if that's safe though.

[Blueprint servercloud-q-chef] Getting Chef Back Into Ubuntu

2012-05-10 Thread Bryan McLellan
Blueprint changed by Bryan McLellan:

Whiteboard changed:
  Discussion Topics:

What issues lead to the packages being removed from precise?
   - Fast Chef development cycle over the last two years made current stable
branch 0.10.x while precise still had 0.8.16.
   - solr package became out of date and broken, which blocked chef-solr [1]

- -- james-page: which version of solr is required to support re-entry
- into the archive? is the current version sufficient or do we need to
- move to 3.6 (and associated lucene 3.6 release)? I can help with either
- scenario and solr 1.4 is not actually 'broken' - just a little
- negelected.
+ -- james-page: which version of solr is required to support re-entry into the
archive? is the current version sufficient or do we need to move to 3.6 (and
associated lucene 3.6 release)? I can help with either scenario and solr 1.4
is not actually 'broken' - just a little negelected.
+ -- btm: broken was my summary of BTS #602697 [1] which justified pulling
solr from debian squeeze. solr 1.4 should be fine, but we need to review the
bugs against solr to ensure this won't happen again in the near future.

How do we ensure that these don't re-occur to ensure the long term viability
of chef as part of Ubuntu?
   - Maintaining chef in Debian will help with this.
     a) The debian pkg-ruby-extras team can use help, especially with the
current transition
   - rails3 support in debian [2] for Chef 11
   - Recommending users of Ubuntu and Debian to use the packages (instead of
gem installing) will also help.
     a) The differing release paradigm makes this problematic. With a goal of
stability, debian/ubuntu follow a waterfall software development model of heavy
testing and then a stable release with minor bug and security fixes as needed.
On the contrary, Chef is under continuous development and improvement. The
version of Chef in an LTS release will be severely out of date in a year.
Providing individual bug patches (diffs) to this package would alone be very
resource intensive, but major features will be missing which provides a large
documentation issue. use the 'foobarblah' resource, except if you're on Ubuntu
LTS, then do it this way, cannot be achieved across all our documentation, let
alone the blogs and howto's of the internet. The latter will be improved when
we provide versioned documentation. Under the Ubuntu release model, this will
necessitate that the user upgrade their distribution whenever they want the
latest version of Chef, which is problematic for people running services in a
production environment.
     b) Debian packages are the recommended installation method for
Debian/Ubuntu, but using the Opscode apt repository due to the above issue.
     c) The recommended installation method in the future will be our
full-stack installer, to provide a stable version of ruby (missing in most
distributions, probably due to Ruby's release paradigm) alongside the latest
version of Chef in the simplest installation method possible. How software
should be installed is a matter of personal preference for many, and Opscode
aims to continue supporting distribution level and gem packaging for those who
prefer it.

-- james-page: backports might help a bit - which is what currently happens
with puppet. But we need to consider ruby version dependencies etc.. if we go
down this route.
-- james-page: can/did we generate/package documents as part of the package
build process? Might help address the documentation concerns for the LTS
version and any backports would get revised docs.

[Bug 982436] Re: add-apt-repository crashed with ImportError in /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/softwareproperties/ppa.py: librtmp.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

2012-05-10 Thread Robert Roth
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 982436] Re: can not import pycurl: librtmp.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

2012-05-10 Thread Robert Roth
As software-properties can not import pycurl, seems like pycurl is
missing a dependency on librtmp, so I am reassigning this bug to the
pycurl package.

[Bug 997479] [NEW] Keyboard layout is set to English until Primary keyboard is pressed

2012-05-10 Thread Torstein Bø
Public bug reported:

I have a laptop (Lenovo T420, US) with an external keyboard (Logitech
K750, NO). The default keyboard layout is set to norwegian, but english
is added to the keyboard layout menu.

After login the keyboard layout should be norwegian, but it is set to
english until I press a key on the laptop keyboard. After a key is
pressed on the laptop, the layout for the external keyboard is set to
norwegian. However, the keyboard notification always displays no.

[Bug 997483] [NEW] VT_WAITACTIVE does not work well with a multiseat setup

2012-05-10 Thread Jesse Sung
Public bug reported:

Related to the fix introduced in bug #851612 .

Saw this in lightdm.log (system call interrupted because of ctrl-alt-del
pressed):
[+2.97s] DEBUG: New display ready, switching to it
[+2.97s] DEBUG: Activating VT 8
[+77.56s] WARNING: Error using VT_WAITACTIVE 8 on /dev/console: Interrupted
system call
[+77.56s] DEBUG: Got signal 15 from process 1
[+77.56s] DEBUG: Caught Terminated signal, shutting down

And in x-1-greeter.log:
[+0.48s] DEBUG: Loading users from org.freedesktop.Accounts
[+0.48s] DEBUG: Loading user /org/freedesktop/Accounts/User1001
[+0.50s] DEBUG: Loading user /org/freedesktop/Accounts/User1000
[+50.56s] WARNING: Error getting session list from
org.freedesktop.DisplayManager: Timeout was reached

On vt7, unity-greeter would get stuck after password input.
On vt8, unity-greeter appears after that getting session list timeout, which
is about a minute later than vt7, and does not have a password input field.

lightdm blocked by VT_WAITACTIVE may be the cause...

Tested with lightdm 1.2.0-0ubuntu2 in precise.

No worries.

Do I now understand correctly that I should report all gedit bugs
upstream first and then report here afterwards?

[Bug 514864] Re: Unhelpful listing in software-properties/-sources

2012-05-10 Thread Robert Roth
@mpt: We can query the repository data for PPAs without having to add
them to the sources, as it's done in apt-add-repository to confirm that
you want to add the repository, so we could query the name/short
description. However there still are some blanks, like medibuntu or
other (non-PPA) repositories used, for which we either have to add them
to the software sources, or build the repository description file URL
and read the description from there (From the release file we can get
the name of the release, and we should map components like main,
universe, etc to human-readable names).

[Bug 997488] [NEW] Clicking active Launcher icon does not initiate window picker in 1x1 workspaces

2012-05-10 Thread d❤vid seaward
Public bug reported:

I am using 12.04, I recently received an update to Unity 5.12-0ubuntu1.
Before that, this issue did not occur. My workspaces are set to 1
horizontal and 1 vertical.

When I click on the Launcher icon of an active application with multiple
windows, the window picker does not appear. This occurs with multiple
applications.

If I change my workspaces to 2x2, clicking the activate icon does
trigger the window picker correctly.

Is there any additional information I can provide?

[Bug 996851] Re: highlighting current line does not work

2012-05-10 Thread Robert Roth
In case of gedit this is mostly true, as there are only minor changes
added by Ubuntu to gedit, so most of the times functional problems
should be reported to GNOME. Theming/styling issues can be caused by the
Ubuntu default theme, so those ones you should not report to GNOME, but
rather to ubuntu first, and a bug triager will decide whether it's an
upstream issue or an ubuntu issue. However please keep in mind that this
is only true for gedit, as other applications might have a large set of
ubuntu-specific changes (e.g. System Settings aka gnome-control-center),
so the problem you are experiencing with them might be only ubuntu-
specific.

However it's always good to have the bugs reported in ubuntu if you have
found the bug in ubuntu, and upstreaming should follow only after the
bug has been reported to ubuntu.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions, I will try to answer
them.

[Bug 979320]

2012-05-10 Thread SK
Wait a minute this IS NOT a bug in pre 3.5 LO or OOo. I have files that
go back a decade that have very complex geometries like these and there
is no problem, NONE. I can open them in 1x, 2x and pre 3.5 the 3x series
no problem. That includes OOo, LO and IBM Symphony. There was never a
problem hundreds of documents.

This IS a nasty bug in the specification that from my point of view
needs to be fixed. Slavishly following the spec document. to break more
than a decade of functionality is poor product management. The end user
does not care that the specification is flawless beautiful only that the
product work forward and back. The ODF file specification should be
amended ASAP to match what every implementation has done to maintain
continuity. Breaking that continuity is was loses user trust and
confident, not mindlessly following the spec the end user be damned! The
spec and the design do need to follow each other but that does not mean
you never bend the spec to match the reality on the ground.

[Bug 979320]

2012-05-10 Thread Tbehrens-u
(In reply to comment #34)
When I receive a document from a customer written in 3.4.4, edit it with 3.5.2
and return it back, to that customer it will look like *I* broke it.

and

Actually M$ with their ever changing format seem to do a better job in
migrating documents and users to a newer product while maintaining backwards
 compatibility with slower adopters.

and

(In reply to comment #36)
For me affects 100's of legal documents and dozens of interal and external
users whom we have already had a hard enough time convincing multiple IT
depts to install. Only solution is forklift upgrade, really bad.

While I understand your frustration, there are several inaccuracies here I'd
like to correct. First, conflating MS (or, for that matter, any *commercial*
offering) with a free software / volunteer project is at best disingenuous. I'm
certain any number of companies providing professional support for LibreOffice
will happily backport fixes to the very version you're using - just as MS does
with service packs for older products.

Second, this bug *is* nasty, and it *does* affect all those people who
faithfully implement ODF as-specified - so if you promote ODF, you
cannot possibly ask us *not* to comply with it, can't you?

And third, if you'd ask nicely, I could maybe stick a hidden config
option into one of the upcoming 3.5.x versions, that would permit
switching that back (no UI for that, though). That would be a separate
enhancement request though.

First off - please move this discussion to
disc...@documentfoundation.org.

To your question:

(In reply to comment #39)
This IS a nasty bug in the specification that from my point of view needs to
 be
 fixed.

No it's not. Did you read the spec? It is referring to svg in that particular
section. Svg is not going to change, and I would strongly oppose deviating in
subtle parts from that standard, to accomodate an implementation bug in _one_
ODF consumer. Please note further that with 3.5.3, we *do* correctly read old
documents, and note even further that there's about a million other things that
won't show up correctly in OOo 1.0, if you make it load a current
ODF1.2-extended document. Get real.

[Bug 979320]

2012-05-10 Thread Ferry Toth
Hello Thorsten,

I am a big believer in free software and in standardization of document
formats.

First, if a commercial project introduces a bug, there is no way to have
a discussion with the developers. With free software I can and that is,
most of the time, refreshing.

Second, we as a company need to keep our documentation available for at
least 10 years after delivering the last product. That would mean for us
at least for a period of 15 years after creating a document. That's why
we choose ODF and PDF.

Obviously the choice for ODF raises a lot of eyebrows internally and
externally for us too, as skiani also mentions.

The funny thing with standards is that it is not the writing of a
standard that makes it a standard, but the adoption of it. So while
former versions of OO and LO incorrectly implement it in some respects,
that implementation has become the 'defacto standard' pure by market
share - at least for now.

I honestly can't say if this bug will hold up large scale adoption of
3.5 (17 users subscribing to this bug only). And when everybody
transitions, there will be no difficulties in exchanging documents
between companies. In that respect exchanging doc's with MS Office users
is a bigger issue.

Creating a having config switch as you suggest would probably only have
the effect of prolonging the transition phase as new doc's with the
broken format would be created with each day passing, which is not would
I would want either.

It would probably have been better to add a fix to the 3.4.6 release,
especially as that was as I understand for a similar reason, file
compatibility of encrypted documents, but I guess that is now too late.

Having a Save As OpenOffice/LibreOffice 3.3/3.4 option would work for
me, but I guess building that, getting it tested and distributed would
take so much time that it would be too late to help anyone?

Otherwise I would ask you 'yes, pretty please, could you do this for us,
ordinary but involved free software users'.

Thanks for the attention, I will shut up now, see how the world adopts
3.5.x and then follow.

Bye.

[Bug 997353] Re: Radom error while hibernating -revalidation failed errno=-5

2012-05-10 Thread Anton Kanishchev
** Visibility changed to: Public

** This bug is no longer flagged as a security vulnerability

** Description changed:

This happens at random when i try to hibernate my system (12.04) lts
sometimes it hibernates properly and others it gives me that error-which stops
it hibernating so i have to push the power button for it to turn off.
My swap file is 10GB and ram=4GB so plently of space for hibernation (only
evern hibernate when no swap used, only ram).
Some help would be much appreciated. I have also noticed this is a very old
bug dating back from 2007 but back then it happened during different actions.

[Bug 450503] Re: add-apt-repository cannot specify the release version

2012-05-10 Thread Robert Roth
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 502454 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/502454

In some cases the newer bug has more information, suggestions, etc marking the
older one as a duplicate of the more recent one can be a good solution, and on
bugs with more comments and duplicates the heat gets higher and higher, and it
has more chance of getting noticed.
The resources are limited and we are trying hard to triage every bug, but
that's very hard, so we might miss some bugs, and find only the more recent
ones, and later on we find their earlier fellows, but we don't want to lose the
triaging work put in the newer bug, so we mark the older one as a duplicate.
