[Bug 1001183] Re: can't reach console mode TTY + nvidia current
I am experiencing this same problem with Ubuntu 12.04, stable kernel 3.3.6, and NVIDIA driver 295.49 with GPU NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS. I arrived at this configuration as a result of instability caused by the stock 12.04 installation. I first had to install NVIDIA 302.07 beta driver after I experienced crippling repeated compiz crashes (was initially running onboard GeForce 7025/nForce 630a but since upgraded to the GeForce 8400GS). The 302.07 beta driver appeared to fix the compiz crash, as it appeared to be a bug in the NVIDIA 295.40 driver that was the cause. However, about a week ago after performing recommended Ubuntu software updates including a kernel upgrade, I started having multiple applications crashing in sequence and frequent system freezes where nothing was responsive and a hard boot was required. I upgraded to kernel 3.3.6 tonight after reding some forum posts of others having similar problems, and this wiped out my NVIDIA 302.07 driver and defaulted to the VESA driver at lower screen resolution (I have a 1920x1080 LCD monitor). I was able to install nvidia-current which is now version 295.49, however I cannot see my text terminals when entering from desktop with Ctrl-Alt-F1 etc. (only enters black screen with a thin magenta bar across the top of the screen as described above), and I cannot enter grub by holding Shift at startup. I have tried purging and reinstalling grub, I have tried editing grub config to manually set screen resolution, all to no avail. I would like to reinstall the 302.07 beta driver and build a kernel module for this kernel, but it appears I have no way to enter Recovery mode or text terminal to turn off lightdm and run the NVIDIA installer. Any help fixing the grub screen resolution so that text terminal is visible would be greatly appreciated. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1001183 Title: can't reach console mode TTY + nvidia current To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/1001183/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

But my native resolution for my monitor is 1920x1080 @ 60hz, so it makes sense why it keeps resetting to what xrandr lists as the default, but it's a pain having to manually change it each session: 1920x1080 50.0*51.0 52.0 53.0 54.0 55.0 56.0 57.0 58.0 1680x1050 59.0 60.0 1600x1024 61.0 1440x900 62.0 63.0 1440x576 64.0 1440x480 65.0 1400x1050 66.0 67.0 68.0 1360x768 69.0 70.0 1280x1024 71.0 72.0 73.0 1280x960 74.0 75.0 1280x800 76.0 1280x720 77.0 78.0 1152x864 79.0 80.0 81.0 82.0 83.0 84.0 85.0 1024x768 86.0 87.0 88.0 89.0 90.0 91.0 960x72092.0 93.0 960x60094.0 960x54095.0 928x69696.0 97.0 896x67298.0 99.0 840x525 100.0101.0102.0103.0104.0 832x624 105.0 800x600 106.0107.0108.0109.0110.0111.0112.0 113.0114.0115.0 800x512 116.0 720x576 117.0 720x480 118.0 720x450 119.0 720x400 120.0 700x525 121.0122.0123.0124.0 680x384 125.0126.0 640x512 127.0128.0129.0 640x480 130.0131.0132.0133.0134.0135.0136.0 137.0 640x400 138.0 640x350 139.0 576x432 140.0141.0142.0143.0144.0145.0146.0 512x384 147.0148.0149.0150.0151.0 416x312 152.0 400x300 153.0154.0155.0156.0157.0 360x200 158.0 320x240 159.0160.0161.0162.0 320x200 163.0 320x175 164.0 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/634648 Title: Saved settings are not used after log in/reboot/x server reboot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-settings/+bug/634648/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1005075] [NEW] Libmusicbrainz fails to parse metadata after recent MusicBrainz API update
Public bug reported: When trying to rip a CD with sound-juicer in Ubuntu 12.04, none of the track names appear and the following errors are printed to stderr: Unrecognised release group element: 'primary-type' Unrecognised track element: 'number' Unrecognised track element: 'number' Unrecognised track element: 'number' [repeated once for each track on CD] This appears to have started happening after MusicBrainz rolled out a schema update that added some more information to releases. [Bug 955876] Re: Possible have wrong values in Metacity gconf/gsettings keys
Ryan Lortie wrote following comment my upstream report: hi Attila, This is not a bug in dconf, but rather in metacity. The bug no longer exists because metacity switched to using GSettings a while ago (which is quite a lot more strict when it comes to checking types vs. the schemas). Ubuntu has been intentionally using an older version of metacity for some time specifically because they needed the GConf support for compatibility with Compiz (which has not yet made the change to GSettings, but will soon). Long story short: this bug is already fixed in GNOME and will soon be fixed in Ubuntu as well (ie: before 12.10 release). My question: possible fix this error anyway in Ubuntu 12.04 to not happening this type mismatch with Metacity keybindings some time? It appears that the bug is not entirely fixed. If I leave the computer for a while and come back to it, the screen is now blank and unresponsive, while the numlock/capslock keys on the keyboard still toggle so I'm guessing it's only the display that is still not working. If I then force-reboot the pc (Alt+SysRq+REISUB) then the display re- appears, but then disappears after leaving it again for a short while. I haven't waited around to see how long it takes for the screen to become unresponsive, but my guess would be after the display is put to sleep by power management stuff in the kernel. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/943263 Title: PC display will not turn on with Llano APUs connected to the VGA port To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/943263/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1005091] [NEW] NetworkManager does not manage device after install on IPv6 network
Public bug reported: When installing Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 with debian-installer on a network with IPv6 enabled, NetworkManager disabled network interfaces from automatically configuring via DHCP in /etc/network/interfaces, but does not disable them from automatically configuring IPv6. This prevents NetworkManager from taking over control and managing the network interface because it still appears to be maintained by the ifupdown, but has IPv4 disabled from configuring at all. The resultant /etc/network/interfaces file looks like this: # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # The primary network interface auto eth0 #NetworkManager#iface eth0 inet dhcp # This is an autoconfigured IPv6 interface iface eth0 inet6 auto Because there is a non-commented iface line for eth0, NetworkManager never takes over management. [Bug 1003842] Re: Precise NM with dns=dnsmasq breaks systems with non-equivalent upstream nameservers
Simon Kelley might have written dnsmaskq with the assumption that all DNS servers upstream have the same view about the namespace. However, this is not how RFC sees it nor how it is set up in a majority of installations. Can you provide an authoritative reference for that? As far as I can see, the internal DNS server can provide one of five different answers to a query (there are other possible answers, including delagations, but these are the five possible ones to a stub resolver which sets the RD bit in th query) 1) A valid answer 2) A NODATA answer asserting that the domain exists, but the domain has no information for the type (A, , MX..) queried. 3) A NXDOMAIN anser asserting that the domain does not exist. 4) No answer. 5) An error return code. 1) and 4) and 5) are not a probem, the next step is obvious. the argument is what to do in 2) and 3), we can either accept the valid reply that comes from DNS server or we can try again witha another one. Dnsmasq does the former, and that, I assert, is the correct thing to do. I believe it's what the libc resolver does too. Given the above, the only way to use an internal DNS server which knows about local records is to make sure it's always queried first: we can't sensibly send the query to the external server and then to the internal server when the external one says don't know since THERE IS NO VALID DON'T KNOW ANSWER. My comment about random failures due to UDP packet loss applies here, but if you want dnsmasq to work this way, there's a flag, --strict-order, which will do it. Assume --strict-order. Since we've decide that the only time we're going to use a second nameserver is when the first one doesn't reply, this affects the timeliness of anwers, if you always send to the one nameserver first, the only circumstance you can use an answer from the second server if after the first one times out. The second server isn't very useful if using it makes all DNS queries take 2-3 seconds. One the other hand, if you arrange that all the servers are equivalent, you can keep a note of which ones are up, or even send the query to all the servers, use the first reply, and discard the rest. Dnsmasq uses both these techniques to improve resilience. If you have very flaky servers, you can even tell it to send every query to all the available servers. Executive summary: non-equivalent servers are bad, but --strict-order will make things work, for the same value of work as the libc resolver). Non-equivalent servers are bad, so don't encourage their use by making --strict-order the default. [Bug 996989] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes Frequently
Can't believe this is on invalid! I got an MSI EX600 machine, which I have been using Ubuntu on since 9.10 without major hick-ups. I have _switched_ from Ubuntu to Fedora now, since this bug really makes the system unworkable. There is nothing written in logs when this happens, although I know a way to fully reproduce the crash. Open your webbrowser and point to a resource-intensive website, like www.eurogamer.net. Click on one of the reviews or digital foundry face- offs. Now just scroll up and down. You'll notice that from time to time the browser screen refresh seems to hang just an instant. Continue to scroll up and down. You would be very lucky if the momentary hang doesn't result in a full lock-up after a few occurances. This bug is 100% reproducable. Since you can not work on the system for more than half an hour, Ubuntu becomes plain unusable, which is a shame. This happens on a fully clean install. With or without updating Nvidia drivers. Don't dismiss this. The bug is here, reproducable, blocking. https://www.google.com/#q=ubuntu+12.04+freezes+-installer Invalid - Confirmed ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: Invalid = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/996989 Title: Ubuntu 12.04 Freezes Frequently To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/996989/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@Thomas - Thanks for your feedback - the upstream kernel developers did add the following comment to this patch: radeon: initial fix for VGA on LLano system, 3 or 4 of us have spent time debugging this, and Jerome finally figured out the magic bit the BIOS/fglrx set that we didn't. [Bug 992485] Re: SIze of luncher icons 32x32 is still to big
Definitely, minimum icon size 32x32 in Unity 3D is too large for many screens, it seems tuned for visually impaired people. Nothing against half-blind people, of course. However I can still see well, fortunately, even if I am quite old now. How can one dismiss the problem by saying that this is just an opinion? The right answer would be: I'll just try to patch it. Or: This is an intrinsic limitation, there's nothing we can do for now. At least, it would have been an honest answer.
