[Bug 1023899] [NEW] Tomcat 7 Startup script should be (slightly) changed to allow mutiple instances

2012-07-12 Thread Michael Wyraz
Public bug reported:

This is an improvement, not a bug. The tomcat7 package is splitted so that it
allows to run multiple tomcat instances. The ini script has a hardcoded NAME
variable and paths depending on it. It should be changed from
   NAME=tomcat7
to
   NAME=$( basename $0 )

CATALINA_HOME in this case should be hardcoded (or moved to a different
variable).

Another improvement would be to allow the DEFAULTS file to override the retry
parameter of teh stop command to give the tomcat more time to shutdown.

[Bug 988819] Re: [SRU] wrong path to libxml2.so.2 in mod_security - broken by multiarch enabled libraries

2012-07-12 Thread Robie Basak
The SRU I proposed just backports the fix that Debian have applied. If
we want to do something else in Quantal, then we'd be deviating from
Debian on this. Is this worth doing?

Of course, the SRU can be done differently. If commenting out LoadFile
works, then perhaps that's all we need to do for the SRU?

[Bug 1022772] Re: Microversion release update for postfix 2.9.3-2

2012-07-12 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Scott, or anyone else affected,

Accepted postfix into precise-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/postfix/2.9.3-2~12.04.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please change the bug tag from
verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not, change the
tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing
will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 1023931] [NEW] (CVE-2012-3864) puppet: multiple vulnerabilities for 2.7.17 and earlier releases (CVE-(2012-{3408, 3864, 3865, 3866, 3867})

2012-07-12 Thread karma
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

http://projects.puppetlabs.com/projects/puppet/wiki/Release_Notes#2.7.18

This is a security release in the 2.7.x branch.

CVE-2012-3864 Arbitrary file read on the puppet master from
authenticated clients (high)

It is possible to construct an HTTP get request from an authenticated
client with a valid certificate that will return the contents of an arbitrary
file on the Puppet master that the master has read-access to.

CVE-2012-3865 Arbitrary file delete/D.O.S on Puppet Master from
authenticated clients (high)

Given a Puppet master with the Delete directive allowed in auth.conf
for an authenticated host, an attacker on that host can send a specially
crafted Delete request that can cause an arbitrary file deletion on the
Puppet master, potentially causing a denial of service attack. Note that
this vulnerability does *not* exist in Puppet as configured by default.

CVE-2012-3866 last_run_report.yaml is world readable (medium)

The most recent Puppet run report is stored on the Puppet master
with world-readable permissions. The report file contains the context
diffs of any changes to configuration on an agent, which may contain
sensitive information that an attacker can then access. The last run
report is overwritten with every Puppet run.

Arbitrary file read on the Puppet master by an agent (medium)

This vulnerability is dependent upon CVE-2012-3866 last_run_report.yml
is world readable above. By creating a hard link of a Puppet-managed
file to an arbitrary file that the Puppet master can read, an attacker forces
the contents to be written to the puppet run summary. The context diff is
stored in last_run_report.yaml, which can then be accessed by the
attacker.

CVE-2012-3867 Insufficient input validation for agent hostnames (low)

An attacker could trick the administrator into signing an attacker's
certificate rather than the intended one by constructing specially
crafted certificate requests containing specific ANSI control sequences.
It is possible to use the sequences to rewrite the order of text displayed
to an administrator such that display of an invalid certificate and valid
certificate are transposed. If the administrator signs the attacker's
certificate, the attacker can then man-in-the-middle the agent.

CVE-2012-3408 Agents with certnames of IP addresses can be impersonated
(low)

If an authenticated host with a certname of an IP address changes IP
addresses, and a second host assumes the first host's former IP
address, the second host will be treated by the puppet master as the
first one, giving the second host access to the first host's catalog.
Note: This will not be fixed in Puppet versions prior to the forthcoming
3.x. Instead, with this Puppet 2.7.18, IP-based authentication in
Puppet 3.x is deprecated, and a warning will be issued when used.

[Bug 578536] Re: when stopped, automount orphans some mounts

2012-07-12 Thread Adam Stokes
The merge proposal has been confirmed and verified on lucid.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: autofs5
+
+ [Impact]
+ Running reload autofs on a release with this issue creates automount maps and
can cause the automounter to hang. This will prevent logins via ssh for users
(due to NFS mounted home directories).

I have an automount setup containing a large number of NIS-provided
maps, all derived from an NIS-provided master map (yp:auto.master). When
I stop automount using stop autofs, I noticed that some mounts have
been unmounted while a non-deterministic number of mounts have been
orphaned and need to be cleaned up using umount:
+
+ [Test]

adar@adar-lx:~$ sudo start autofs sudo stop autofs grep autofs
/proc/mounts

rw,relatime,fd=55,pgrp=13244,timeout=60,minproto=5,maxproto=5,indirect 0 0

I suspect this is due to the transition to upstart but I'm not 100%
  sure.

to distro-maintai.
Internal and external security audits initiated by Puppet Labs have
returned five vulnerabilities (two high, one moderate, and two low) in
puppet. We have requested four CVEs for vulnerabilities 1 - 4, and
will send an update once we have received them from Mitre. We are
working with distribution maintainers and key customers to ensure
we are able to patch the vulnerabilities before any are exploited.

The vulnerabilities discussed in this email have not been publicly
disclosed. One of the attack vectors of vulnerability #1 was
temporarily made public in our ticket tracker. This was addressed but
the vulnerability may have leaked.

We appreciate your consideration to the sensitivity of this information,
and respectfully ask that you refrain from publicly disclosing the contents
of this email until our planned disclosure date, Tuesday, July 10, 2012
at 5:00 PM Pacific Time. On this date we plan to release updated packages
along with a public disclosure.

We have included patches for the following versions of puppet in the
2.6.x and 2.7.x series:
2.6.4
2.6.16
2.7.9
2.7.17

We have tested that the 2.6.17 patch applies cleanly to 2.6.9, and
the 2.7.17 patch applies to 2.7.12. If you have any trouble applying
these or need help with patches for additional Puppet versions, please
let us know. We would be glad to help.

We are currently packaging new releases of Puppet addressing the
vulnerabilities. This will result in the following new Puppet versions:
 * Puppet 2.6.17
 * Puppet 2.7.18
 * Hotfixes will be released for Puppet Enterprise 1.0, 1.1, 1.2.4, and
   2.0.3.
 * For users of Puppet Enterprise 2.5.x, updated packages will be
included with the forthcoming release of Puppet Enterprise 2.5.2.

Just to mention that I have run into this problem myself when I connect

[Bug 1006509] Re: Please merge from debian autofs 5.0.6-2

[Bug 1003842] Re: dnsmasq sometimes fails to resolve private names in networks with non-equivalent nameservers

2012-07-12 Thread Stéphane Graber
Untargeted the dnsmasq part of it from 12.04.1 as we realistically won't
get a change in dnsmasq by then.

Switching back to strict-order is a bad idea for the reasons listed in
bug 903854, namely, we'd loose our biggest advantage from using dnsmasq.
But there should be a middle ground here where servers would usually be
checked like in strict-order and any server not responding in
$AMOUNT_OF_TIME is automatically skipped for later queries + a watchdog
querying the server from time to time to see if it's back to life.

Note there is also a patch (which I've Acked) upstream for adding the

If it takes awhile yet for upstream to merge the patch or to do a new
release or rc, we can pull that patch into our package.

@John

Thanks again for the example web application - I did have to make one
tweak as Ubuntu do not ship the jdbc-pool tomcat module; removing this
reference from the webapp context.xml makes tomcat7 use the one which is
default from commons-dbcp.

[Bug 1015041] Re: Conflict between NTP and NTPDATE

2012-07-12 Thread JoLa
Meanwhile I had installed Ubuntu: As the unity desktop is not my thing I
installed Xubuntu again and found two reasons for the time leaks in the
syslog, but not at the same starts of OS.

1. Setting of IPv6 in the networkmanager. I set it to 'ignore'.
2. NTP Server in 'ntp.conf'. I changed it to this:

server ptbtime1.ptb.de
server ptbtime2.ptb.de
server ptbtime3.ptb.de

# Use Ubuntu's ntp server as a fallback.
# server de.pool.ntp.org

Since deactivating the fallback server Xubuntu starts without loop about

The 1.4.2 release only contains bug fixes for 1.4.1 and 1.4.0.

Thanks,

[Bug 1021530] Re: update to include stable fixes for OVS 1.4

2012-07-12 Thread Aaron Rosen
Hi Adam,

When when investigating this a little more closely I was able to do the
following (applying the patch Dan linked on top of the v1.4.0 tag) and
it resolved the issue.

git checkout v1.4.0
git cherry-pick 11f84dce005dd14a374ab2ef5f8c25bcf8285a36

Also it seems that what you applied here http://paste.ubuntu.com/1078602
doesn't seem to exactly match the patch that Dan provided here:
http://openvswitch.org/cgi-
bin/gitweb.cgi?p=openvswitch;a=commitdiff_plain;h=11f84dce005dd14a374ab2ef5f8c25bcf8285a36;hp=776cf91b42f631b4929fffe8ddd2aa06b40ea24c
(though the only difference seems to be in dpif-netdev.c for an include.
Was this intentional? )

Thanks,

Aaron

Finally I forced removed samba:

$sudo dpkg --force-depends --purge samba-common libpam-smbpass samba

and again, ran

$sudo apt-get install -f

[Bug 806761] Re: Feature Request: Upstart scripts for nslcd

2012-07-12 Thread Caleb Callaway
The odd behavior turned out to be a race condition between the nslcd and
nslcd-k5start scripts: per the Upstart docs
(http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/#expect), Upstart assumes the job
has started after the first PID that is generated in the script, unless
an expect stanza is present. So, Upstart believes the nslcd-k5start job
has started as soon as the calls to sed/hostname/etc are made and starts
the nslcd job, which fails because it can't find the credentials cache
it needs.

I can think of three options, none of which look good:

1) Use kinit in a pre-start script for the nslcd-k5start job, and duplicate the
K5START_START logic in both the pre-start script and the main script.
2) Re-solve the problem that Upstart's supposed to solve with a signalling
system, like letting the nslcd job wait until the nslcd-k5start job had set a
flag (or a timeout occurs). Something like a spin lock.
3) Stall the nslcd script for set period of time and hope the nslcd-k5start
script doesn't take very long to start.

At the moment, option 3 seems like the best of the bad options:
introducing an extra dependency and duplicating control logic seems like
a good way to introduce bugs, and implementing a lock system is robust
but complicated. A revised debdiff that uses the third option is
attached. I'm quite open to arguments in favor of another option, and
I'd be delighted to know of a non-hackish solution.

** Patch added: Revised Upstart scripts

[Bug 1023732] Re: Ubuntu upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 fail

2012-07-12 Thread Manfred Hampl
This might be a duplicate of bug #721306

If the package xserver-xorg-video-nouveau is installed, in several cases
the 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade fails with the error message

Could not determine the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by
held packages.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

Several persons have reported that after removal of that package the
upgrade was successful.

Try this workaround: Open a terminal and enter the command:

sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (which most probably will
also remove xserver-xorg-video-all)

and then try the upgrade again.

++

If xserver-xorg-video-nouveau blocks the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, it
might as well block the LTS upgrade 10.04 to 12.04 with the consequence,
that not (two years later) there might be a higher number of such bug
reports again!
