I apologize for the #80, it was inappropriate, and may have come across
as a personal attack. I got a bit frustrated having noticed it's been
almost a year since the bug got reported. I'll what I can do about the
mainline kernel.

[Bug 972063] Re: Bluetooth Headset pairs but does not show up in Sound Settings profile

2012-08-07 Thread Benjamin Kerensa
Notably extensive testing of this hardware has already been conducted by
myself and also various Canonical Engineers/Developers there seems to be
a strong consensus that this is Kernel related.

Mainline does nothing to resolve the issues.

My Bluetooth device does not have a "USB Receiver" it is intended to
connect strictly via a BT connection with my BT hardware on the laptop

bug was gone. A bit after I switched back, it froze at resume again.

[Bug 1029531] Re: cdromupgrade from Lucid to Precise failed with unmet dependencies without network connection

2012-08-07 Thread Steve Langasek
$ grep liblaunchpad-integration
../simple/precise/ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64.list
/pool/main/l/launchpad-integration/liblaunchpad-integration-3.0-1_0.1.56_amd64.deb
/pool/main/l/launchpad-integration/liblaunchpad-integration-common_0.1.56_all.deb
$

liblaunchpad-integration1 isn't present on the alternate CD, so the
version seen here is the one from lucid which has a Breaks: from
liblaunchpad-integration-common.

Looking more closely at what wants liblaunchpad-integration1:

Installing liblaunchpad-integration1 as Depends of libbrasero-media0
--> obsolete library.

apt later reconsiders libbrasero-media0 itself:

Investigating (0) libbrasero-media0 [ amd64 ] < 2.30.2-0ubuntu1.1 > ( libs )
Broken libbrasero-media0:amd64 Depends on brasero-common [ amd64 ] <
2.30.2-0ubuntu1.1 -> 3.4.1-0ubuntu1 > ( gnome ) (< 2.31)
  Considering brasero-common:amd64 10 as a solution to libbrasero-media0:amd64
-1
Removing libbrasero-media0:amd64 rather than change brasero-common:amd64

But this happens too late to get liblaunchpad-integration-3.0-1
reconsidered.

An artificial Breaks: from liblaunchpad-integration-3.0-1 to libbrasero-
media0 might be a sufficient hammer. I'd suggest testing with a mocked-
up Packages file that introduces such a breaks, rather than going
through an SRU cycle to test this.

2012-08-07 Thread Rahul Jain
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 precise running-unity ubuntu

** Description changed:

This happens most of the time (I can reproduce it 90% of the time) that,
for example, I take the mouse cursor to the absolute top-edge of the
screen above the Unity top bar, and move the cursor from left to right,
or right to left, there will be white dash like (---), or dot like
artifacts, ALWAYS in proximity to the cursor. Where I take the cursor,
the artifact goes with it and flickers.

  1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->
About Ubuntu
  Description: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
  Release: 12.04

  2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname'
or by checking in Software Center
I don't know what package to mark this as. The problem affects the Unity top
bar.

  3) What you expected to happen
  No artifacts or glitches

  4) What happened instead

2012-08-07 Thread Balakrishnan Nair
Any update on this ? I really dont want to manually compile and risk it
getting broken.

After numerous tries, I was able to get this to work by the following

1) plug the EVDO and wait for the log to show failed as given on my
opening thread

2) type "sudo modprobe option"

3) unplug and plug EVDO back in... it will show

[Bug 1029531] Re: cdromupgrade from Lucid to Precise failed with unmet dependencies without network connection

2012-08-07 Thread Steve Langasek
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1135477 seems to be the entire opposite of a CD-
only upgrade. E.g.,

> Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/m/mono
/libmono-corlib2.0-cil_2.10.8.1-1ubuntu2.2_all.deb Could not resolve
'security.ubuntu.com'

So you've told apt about versions of packages from precise-security via
apt-get update, then taken the machine offline? Not surprising that it
then fails the upgrade.

This is meant to work including for systems that *can't* run apt-get
update; and needs to be fixed by analyzing the upgrade errors in the apt
upgrade log, and getting those packages included in the package pool on
the alternate CD, or otherwise hinting packages out of the way that
can't be installed.

Working back from the end of that log, the errors I see are:

So something is preventing liblaunchpad-integration from being upgraded,

[Bug 1034269] [NEW] Wicd opens dozens of "Wireless Network Authentication Required" windows

2012-08-07 Thread John McCabe-Dansted
Public bug reported:

I think there is something wrong with my wireless range extender, it
keeps dropping connections. However, wicd-gtk handles this particularly
badly, when I come back to my computer I find dozens of "Wireless
Network Authentication Required" windows. Since this is hardware related
rather than password related, I don't know why wicd needs to pop up
these windows, but in any case there is no point having more than more
than one of these windows open at the same time.

I would expect wicd-gtk to never fill up my taskbar with authentication
windows.

A workaround is to run while wmctrl -c "Wireless Network
Authentication Required" || wmctrl -c "Wireless Network Authentication
Required"; do sleep 0.1 ; done (The || is only required as wmctrl
returns false if it gets a transient X error, so adding the || makes it
more robust.

2012-08-07 Thread Daniel T Chen
Thank you both for your work on this defect. A few notes:
1. The pocket is precise-proposed (instead of precise).
2. The version is better as 3.99.3+repack1-1ubuntu0.1 (instead of
3.99.3+repack1-1ubuntu1).
3. Please submit this fix upstream,

Please roll a new debdiff that replaces the existing one, thanks!

[Bug 1034256] Re: SDL/OpenGL program (Frogatto) gets erratic behavior when resizing

** Description changed:

+ SDL apps that resize their own windows get stuck flickering rapidly

+ Confirmed with QEMU/KVM and Frogatto.
+
+ ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
This issue affects Frogatto: 2d adventure game, #frogatto on freenode,
www.frogatto.com
When entering Frogatto's editor, which uses a different window size, Unity
gets stuck flickering between the game's window size and the editor's, for
several seconds, until settling on either.

Given the following exchange on #ubuntu-unity, this issue also affects
QEMU and KVM, which also use SDL for graphics.

marcavis: what toolkit does the editor use?
marcavis: I've seen the same bug happen with QEMU/KVM windows. It's
probably compiz to blame.
hmmm, makes sense... Frogatto just uses SDL/OpenGL, no specific
GUI toolkits

Re: [Bug 773081] Re: Display does not work when starting up after hibernate

2012-08-07 Thread runeks
I only tested with Precise but recognized now that I actually do not
have the option to "Hibernate" so what I tested was "Suspend" which
works fine. It appears very few people have the same problem so I
guess we any way can close the report with Status Invalid.

Thanks,

Rune

[Bug 1034264] [NEW] Network Manager problem with WiFi

2012-08-07 Thread Michael Tinsay
Public bug reported:

I have set-up a bridge (br0) on eth0 of my laptop, as I'm using KVM from time
to time.

This is the content of /etc/network/interfaces:

aaa@xxx:~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

#
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual

auto br0
iface br0 inet dhcp
bridge_ports eth0
bridge_stp off
bridge_fd 0
bridge_maxwait 0

My problem is, if I boot WITHOUT a live connection plugged into the
ethernet port of my laptop, NetworkManager sees my WiFi as "disabled by
a hardware switch". As such, I can't use WiFi when there's no LAN. I
can use WiFi when there's a LAN connection present, but it defeats the
purpose of having a WiFi connection.

[Bug 1034263] [NEW] Change of UI for Multiverse, Universe

2012-08-07 Thread Bhaavan Merchant
Public bug reported:

In synaptic categories having a section for each category with a
different section for Universe, multiverse and main is quite confusing.
Universe / multiverse / main are actually filters rather than catgories.
In any case if at all the should exist, it should be as subcategories
and not different categories.

My personal sugeestion would be to have 3 checkboxes somewhere at the
top / side top for Main, Universe, Multiverse, and then their values
should be respected while performing a search or going to a category.

Alternatively, the the pane where packages are displayed with columns
like S, Package name, Latest version etc. Another column can be added
saying "License" which displays against each package if it is in main,
universe or multiverse or restricted.

[Bug 1034260] [NEW] Desktop Freeze

2012-08-07 Thread Oleg Yaroshevych
Public bug reported:

I worked in Nautilus, renamed a file, and then Nautilus window and whole
desktop became unresponsive and grayed. I waited for two minutes and had
to restart lightdm from the console.

In the logs I've seen "[drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer
id" line approximately when crash had occurred.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with all updates installed.

[Bug 909488] Re: nautilus-dropbox forbids dropbox's non-free binaries to replace themselves by properly installing dropbox system-wide

2012-08-07 Thread Paul Abrahams
Update: I've gotten Dropbox working by downloading it from the website
and using the Deb installer (which, conveniently, is offered by
default).

So the situation is this, it seems. There are three possible ways to
install Dropbox:

1. Download it from the Dropbox website and install it with the Deb installer.
2. Follow the procedure recommended on the Dropbox website.
3. Install nautilus-dropbox using Synaptic or another Ubuntu package installer.

All three of these are plausible, but only the first one yields a
working Dropbox (for me, at least).

[Bug 1004239] Re: lirc installation error in Ubuntu 12.04

2012-08-07 Thread Joel Ebel
There are a lot of unrelated problems reported in this bug. The original
problem was this:
ls: cannot access /lib/modules/3.2.0-24-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/lirc:
  No such file or directory

The solution to this would be to patch lirc.postinst to look in
/lib/modules/$KERNEL/kernel/drivers/staging/media/lirc

A debdiff for lirc is attached which should fix the original issue of
this bug.

For the other problems described, you should consider support forums,
mailing lists, or opening a new bug.

** Patch added: "debdiff patch to fix path to modules in lirc.postinst"

[Bug 1023950] Re: Grub update hangs while upgrading Lucid to Precise

2012-08-07 Thread Tomasz Czapiewski
To workaround the problem I have temporarirly linked /bin/true to
/usr/sbin/update-grub:
# sudo mount --bind /bin/true /usr/sbin/update-grub
# sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
(installation of kexec-tools completed)
Then grub config update and installation:
# sudo umount /usr/sbin/update-grub
# sudo update-grub
# sudo grub-install /dev/sda
After that everything went fine and 12.04 boots properly.

[Bug 1034258] [NEW] UFW Fails, blocking access to EC2 Server after dist-upgrade (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, i386)

2012-08-07 Thread Mduduzi
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Hi,
This bug has gotten me enough times with my Amazon EC2 servers. Only now do I
realise that it is after running dist-upgrade. When updating using apt-get
upgrade, UFW, keeps working as expected even if I reboot.

I followed up with apt-get dist-upgrade specifically because I wanted to
update the kernel. After the reboot, I cannot SSH into the server.

This is a critical bug because I cannot access my EC2 server! What
options do I have other than to loose the entire server, and beg
software vendors to issue me another license because the server is still
running, I simply cannot access it at all via ANY port? Not even the web
services via HTTPS are available! This also means that I loose all
contents of the server not on a separate, attached storage!

This has happened numerous times but only now have I been able to
conclusively pin it down to UFW failing after running dist-upgrade.

Until this bug is fixed, I suggest anybody should not use UFW on EC2
servers. Or if you must, disable and remove it altogether before
rebooting after having executed dist-upgrade and upgraded the
kernel/image.

My server is running the x86 version of 10.04 LTS on Amazon's EC2.

No further details are available since the server is no longer
accessible. The problem can be reproduced as described above.

This is not a direct vulnerability, but it is certainly a security
concern since it leads to a situation where the firewall must be
disabled.

[Bug 1019131] Re: vsync is disabled by default in nouveau

2012-08-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

Sync-to-vblank support is disabled by default in the nouveau driver.
This makes the desktop tear badly, and look ugly, on nvidia systems.

It's also inconsistent, as radeon and intel both have sync-to-vblank
  enabled by default.

+
  WORKAROUND:
  /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

  Section "Device"
-   Identifier "My Graphics"
-   Option "GLXVBlank" "on"
+ Identifier "My Graphics"
+ Driver "nouveau"
+ Option "GLXVBlank" "on"
  EndSection
+

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
Quite simply because otherwise performance in the default unity/compiz
session is awful. There is very visible tearing when moving windows, switching
workspaces ect, ect.
Can't see why you'd leave it up to the users to enable thru xorg.conf

[Bug 1034256] [NEW] SDL/OpenGL program (Frogatto) gets erratic behavior when resizing

2012-08-07 Thread Marcos Avila Isidoro
Public bug reported:

This issue affects Frogatto: 2d adventure game, #frogatto on freenode,
www.frogatto.com
When entering Frogatto's editor, which uses a different window size, Unity gets
stuck flickering between the game's window size and the editor's, for several
seconds, until settling on either.

Frogatto just uses SDL/OpenGL, no specific GUI
toolkits
marcavis: Yes, QEMU/KVM uses SDL too
marcavis: I can't remember if there ever was a bug for it. Please log
one with "ubuntu-bug compiz"

** Description changed:

+ Sync-to-vblank support is disabled by default in the nouveau driver.

Quite simply because otherwise performance in the default unity/compiz

[Bug 1034255] [NEW] shadow in topbar

2012-08-07 Thread Bhaavan Merchant
Public bug reported:

What happens:
I have a maximized window (firefox) in background. Currently my topbar looks
good as it blends into the infrastructure.
Now I open gnome-terminal. It opens in unmaximized state. Now all of sudden my
topbar looks crazy with shadow over the firefox window making some of the
firefox top UI difficult to look at.

What should happen:
The topbar should not cast a shadow. This behaviour is inconsistent in
maximized mode and minimized mode.
Also when I open another window I just expect the overlapping part of the
underneath window to get obstructed. The shadow obstructs even the top few
lines of pixels of the window underneath giving a weird unblended rendering.

[Bug 896836] Re: Segmentation fault when asking help() for the list of modules

2012-08-07 Thread John McPherson
The simplest combination of modules I can find that causes the segfault
(presumably due to the mixture of static and dynamic bindings for the
gtk module described above) is:

python -c 'import Onboard; import gtk '

/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py:42: Warning:
g_boxed_type_register_static: assertion `g_type_from_name (name) == 0' failed
  from gtk import _gtk

** (python:7386): CRITICAL **: pyg_register_boxed: assertion `boxed_type != 0'
failed
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py:42: Warning: cannot
register existing type `GdkDevice'
  from gtk import _gtk
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py:42: Warning:
g_type_get_qdata: assertion `node != NULL' failed
  from gtk import _gtk
zsh: segmentation fault python -c 'import Onboard; import gtk '

After removing the 'onboard' package, "pydoc -k" will get much further
through the list of packages when searching, but now eventually hangs
for me. strace shows it seems to be a race condition on a futex in atk:

[Bug 1034251] Re: Ubuntu said there is a problem with this blueman

2012-08-07 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 962469 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/962469

There's unfortunately not enough information here to know anything about
the issue with blueman; but I'll take a wild wild guess and mark this as
a duplicate of bug 962469; which is what people most often run into with
blueman at the moment.

If you run into this issue again, please make sure to use the apport
dialogs to file the bug reports and wait until the web forms are
complete and the attachments have been added, as all debugging
information should get automatically attached.

[Bug 909488] Re: nautilus-dropbox forbids dropbox's non-free binaries to replace themselves by properly installing dropbox system-wide

I forgot to mention: on a different machine, also running 12.04, I see
that the "dropbox" package is installed and the "nautilus-dropbox"
package is not installed. And on that machine, Dropbox works. However,
I cannot determine where that "dropbox" package came from.

[Bug 909488] Re: nautilus-dropbox forbids dropbox's non-free binaries to replace themselves by properly installing dropbox system-wide

2012-08-07 Thread Paul Abrahams
I'm a Dropbox user. Dropbox worked fine for me under 11.10; on this
machine it does not work under 12.04. I tried the procedure recommended
by Dropbox:

cd ~ && wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86_64"; | tar xzf -
~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd

And I soon got this:

pwa@pwa-K60IJ:~$ dropbox start -i
Starting Dropbox...
Dropbox is the easiest way to share and store your files online. Want to learn
more? Head to http://www.dropbox.com/

Error: Trouble connecting to Dropbox servers. Maybe your internet connection is
down, or you need to set your http_proxy environment variable
The installation of Dropbox failed.

Is this a Ubuntu bug or a Dropbox bug? I have no way of knowing, and
from the earlier comments in this bug I conclude that there's no
agreement about that.

Meanwhile I struggle.

[Bug 69648] Re: Misleading "To be installed" list when *unmarking* package with uninstalled dependencies

2012-08-07 Thread Bhaavan Merchant
When I mark a package with dependencies, (say 0AD, it asks me that
dependecies are needed, and gives me "Mark" option) . Now when I realize
I dont need that package, and go to it to unmark, it again says that the
dependecies will be affected, and "Mark" them. This should be replace
with Unmark them option, and probably another option, Leave the
dependencies marked.

Another usecase of this bug is vlc-fluidsynth. Marking that once makes
required download size = 137MB. Now unmarking that still has download
size = 137 MB as it dependencies never got unmarked. There is absolutely
no way to undo a mark except to manually go a track each and every
dependency and unmark it.
