Add

or if you want a more generic broader rule you could change
  network packet packet,

to
  network packet,

which would cover all sockets in the packet address family

[Bug 1008344] Re: checks "admin" group membership instead of querying polkit

2013-01-31 Thread Philipp Wendler
Please, drop the is_admin check completely.

I said it already: "you cannot know whether the user knows the password
of an admin account if you do not ask for it". If you try guessing, you
will inevitable guess wrong sometimes and frustrate the user. This is
also true if polkit does the guessing.

If you do not want to confuse user with admin buttons, then, either put
a lock symbol on all of them, of grey them out and add a single unlock
button just like the time settings dialog.

For the check for missing packages, you can just add a button "check for
missing packages", or run the check when the user clicks the unlock
button. Or you convert the popup that asks the user into a text and
button in the language dialog, something along "Missing packages detect.
[ Install them]".

This solution is easy to implement, does not require new polkit
features, has a clear, obvious, ui, and does not get in the way of users
by hiding things from them they would like to see.

[Bug 1108518] Re: lightdm should not rename() .xsession-errors, as it may be a symlink

2013-01-31 Thread Alec Warner
My point isn't so much that there is a race, or a sec vuln or something.
My point is that on my systems:

$HOME may be on NFS.
$HOME/.xsession-errors is a symlink to /usr/local/home/$USER/.xsession-errors
$HOME/.xsession-errors.old is a symlink to
/usr/local/home/$USER/.xsession-errors.old

The obvious think is to just call readlink on logfile to canonicalize
the filename.

The readlink manpage specifies a way to do this 'sort of' safely.

lstat(path) # to get the size of the symlink dest.
allocate string of correct size.
readlink(path)

Check that the path we got from readlink was size bytes.

Now obviously the link can be replaced (at readlink()) time, but readlink would
return EINVAL then.
Once we have the 'canonical' name we can call rename on that.

[Bug 1023755] Re: Precise kernel locks up while dd to /dev/mapper files > 1Gb (was: Unable to delete volume)

2013-01-31 Thread Thiago Martins
Just a curiosity... Isn't this related to the following BUGs:

Ubuntu server uses CFQ scheduler instead of deadline:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1008400

Kernel I/O scheduling writes starving reads, local DoS:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1064521

???

What can be done?

Edit the file: /etc/default/grub and add:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="elevator=deadline"

run:

update-grub
reboot

Test it again...

Best,
Thiago

[Bug 1112202] [NEW] g_mime_utils_header_decode_text() core dump

2013-01-31 Thread Dinh Le
Public bug reported:

Simple two lines C code below would core dump:

char encodestr =
"=?ISO-8859-1?B?WW91ciBQYXlQYWyZIEV4dHJhcyBNYXN0ZXJjYXJkIFN0YXRl?=
=?ISO-8859-1?B?bWVudCBmcm9tIEdFIENhcGl0YWwgaXMgQXZhaWxhYmxlIE9ubGluZQ==?=";
char *decodestr = g_mime_utils_header_decode_text(encodestr);

My system is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
libgmime-2.6-0 is already the newest version.
libgmime-2.6-0-dbg is already the newest version.
libgmime-2.6-dev is already the newest version.
libgmime-2.6-doc is already the newest version.

I stuck those two lines into the main() function of test-mime.c to
generate the core dump.

Thanks for your help.

Dinh

[Bug 1016147] Re: ALPS Touchpad' incorrectly detected as PS/2 mouse in 'Acer Aspire V3-771G'

2013-01-31 Thread Brandon Dzuba Hestad
For all those still looking, I have an Acer Aspire v3 771g and this
package: psmouse-alps-dst-0.4.tbz , works perfectly, here are
installation instructions:

Extract psmouse-alps-dst-0.4 in /usr/src/ with sudo rights.
If you have installed the module before, I suggest you to completely remove it
before reinstalling with:
sudo dkms remove psmouse/alps-dst-0.4 --all
(of course, if you have installed another version of the module, change version
number accordingly)
Then just give those commands in the terminal:
sudo dkms build psmouse/alps-dst-0.4
sudo dkms install psmouse/alps-dst-0.4
sudo rmmod psmouse && sudo modprobe -v psmouse
After that your touchpad will be hopefully recognized by your machine.

[Bug 1103594] Re: Cypress Trackpad wrongly (?) detected as "PS/2 Cypress Trackpad" ("evdev *pointer* catchall") on XPS 12

2013-01-31 Thread Cédric Dufour
ERRATA: 'i915.invert_brightness=1' is *not* the way to go. Brightness is
actually handled correclty... but when booting the XPS 12 with 3.8rc5,
brightness is by default set to its minimum value (iow. off). One just
needs to increase it with Fn+F5 to have the panel "wake up".

Note that this issue is also solved in the Quantal kernel, which, if I
read correctly, incorporates all the quirks - for the brightness,
trackpad, etc. - that have been developed as part of the Dell/Ubuntu
Sputnik project (for the XPS 13). It appears none of this quirks are
mainstream as per 3.8rc5 :-(

[Bug 1098697] Re: High Battery discharge rate when Laptop is off.

2013-01-31 Thread Dave H
Confirmed NOT A KERNEL Bug.
Ran the following test:
1) Installed ethtool.
2) Ran command sudo ethtool -s eth0 wol d
3) Checked WOL:
sudo ethtool eth0 | grep Wake-on
[sudo] password for dave:
Supports Wake-on: pumbg
Wake-on: d
3) Fully charged Eny Sleekbook, powered down, waited 48hrs (2days).

Test Result
4) Powered up Sleekbook on battery immediately took battery reading:

http://www.divnut.com/Ubuntu/Battery_48hr_test_010212.png

Measured Battery charge state: 96.3% battery depletion ~1.7% in over days
allowing ~1-2% for boot up on Battery.
Was previously 36%

Big thanks to Raymond Dalgleish for his input.

So the fix is ethtool requires to be part of the default Unbuntu install
with default WOL set off.

@Joseph Salisbury suggest this bug is closed, on what would I raise a
new bug to progress the fix ?

Thanks

Calling gbm_bo_create() with format == GBM_BO_FORMAT_ARGB completes
successfully. However reading back the format via gbm_bo_get_format()
returns GBM_BO_FORMAT_XRGB.

The problem seems to be that the bo internal structure is initialized to
zero by calloc, but the format field is never set by gbm_dri_bo_create,
so it stays zero (GBM_BO_FORMAT_XRGB) even when the real image
format is something different.

Should be a simple fix in gbm_dri_bo_create(). Just add:
  bo->base.base.format = gbm_dri_to_gbm_format(dri_format);

Thanks. I might do that. I still urge the developers to either add such a
key to dconf or just fix the issue in Unity.

Really hard to say, it depends on the available time and mood of the
polkit authors. Could be anything from a few days to many weeks; we
should at least get the design settled with upstream, the
implementation is probably rather easy.

Ah, I believe I made it so that if mutter wasn't installed, it just
uses the default value of 10px, as there was very little usecase for
making it configurable.

If you want to adjust it, you'll have to install mutter, and adjusting
that setting will adjust the draggable border width on both mutter and
unity.

Lovely, but there's stil no "org.gnome.mutter:draggable-
border-width" key in my Unity-only installation's dconf. Actually, there's
nothing like org.gnome.mutter there.

[Bug 1112147] [NEW] gbm_dri_bo_create fails to initialize bo->base.base.format

2013-01-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Public bug reported:

Calling gbm_bo_create() with format == GBM_BO_FORMAT_ARGB completes
successfully.

[Bug 995587] Re: mysqldump: Got error: 1142: SELECT, LOCK TABL command denied to user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' for table 'cond_instances' when using LOCK TABLES

2013-01-31 Thread Thomas Goirand
Hi,

There's absolutely no reason why this bug is still open, with comments
from users. This has been fixed a long time ago in Debian, and should be
also in Ubuntu. Perhaps this is just affecting users of Ubuntu 10.04, in
which case I would advise to upgrade to the latest version of
automysqlbackup from Debian SID (it will also work with any version of
Ubuntu normally).

For the above reasons, I'm asking for the closing of this bug.

Thomas

[Bug 1106037] [NEW] Reverse mouse wheel direction in almost apps is invalid.

2013-01-31 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I need the reverse mouse wheel direction (It means natural scrolling
like Mac OS X and the touch Pad and so on.), because I have a touch
scroll mouse.

I found that this method can achieve some of my thoughts.
I use .Xmodmap and I can
! Note that 4 5 and 6 7 are reversed to behave like a table. #
ubuntu-tweak also have this feature setting and do like this
xinput set-button-map 12 1 2 3 5 4 7 6 8 9 10 11 12

So I found this method can be make the browsers(firefox,Chrome..) use
natural scrolling ,this is exactly what I want.

but, then found in other almost apps(nautilus,system-settings, ubuntu-
software-center, and so on) still the original scrolling direction ,
that apps don't appears natural scrolling.

I have three question need to solve:

Why the xinput settings can be valid in the browser apps ,but be invalid in
others apps ???
How to solve that can use reverse mouse direction (natural scrolling) in any
where ???
Why this feature not in Ubuntu system's self settings ???

[Bug 1099259] Re: Display not working with Nexus 7 when docked

2013-01-31 Thread Tony Mugan
I have also confirmed that on Ringtail (and all latest updates) that video over
USB on a second universal docking station does not work either.
It looks like Displaylink support is a bit lacking in Ubuntu unfortunately.

The benefit for enterprise is great if this can be made to work since
universal docks are a mainstay of the BYOD trend. To be unable to bring
an ubuntu desktop to work and use the full capabilities of the hotdesk
environment gives bragging rights to the Windows and Mac users.

This Targus docking station shows up as

Bus 004 Device 003: ID 17e9:4306 DisplayLink

I would be delighted to test if there are any ideas on how to get this
working.

I also have this bug but as a noobie I am completely lost as how to fix
it. Is there any chance of further information or a run through of how
to apply the fix? I tried changing the ubuntu-2d to ubuntu with no

[Bug 585910] Re: [Upstream] Impress Font fuzzy in presentation mode when Use hardware acceleration enabled

2013-01-31 Thread Nobuto MURATA
@Michael Lueck,

I did the steps below:

 1. enable proposed and set Pin-Priority: 400 to -proposed
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed

 2. apt-get update

 3. apt-get install -t precise-proposed libreoffice-base-core libreoffice-calc \
  libreoffice-common libreoffice-core libreoffice-draw
libreoffice-gnome \
  libreoffice-gtk libreoffice-impress libreoffice-math
libreoffice-writer python-uno

(packages name retrieved from "The following packages will be upgraded:
" field in `apt-get install -s -t precise-proposed libreoffice`)

Good luck.

Re: [Bug 1110905] Re: S3 savage support is not working in 12.10 and beyond

2013-01-31 Thread Sami Cirpili
The X is screwed up, incorrect display on the screen. There are four
large stripes and nothing recognizable when the DM is launched. However
the splash screen with lubuntu and the four dots does come up correctly.
Immediately after this splash screen, the display is garbled. Yes, similar
to the bug you mentioned. The problem was narrowed to
xserver-xorg-video-savage. The latest version appears to be the problem.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks for a great OS.

[Bug 1048193] Re: "Forecast Information Cannot be fetched. Connection cannot be established"

2013-01-31 Thread Andre
Thank you very much, Miroslav. "indicator-
weather_12.07.30-0ubuntu1_all_patched.deb" fixes all bugs for me on
Precise 64bit. Forecast is set to Yahoo! and works (2 days). Also, I can
add new locations.

When will this version find its way into the regular Ubuntu updates for
Precise?
