[Bug 1155784] Re: source build fails with USER: parameter not set

2013-03-18 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I have reproduced this in Precise. Note that I had to install devscripts
to make your reproduction steps work. But I can't reproduce this in
Raring.

However, I can successfully build php5 in Precise using sbuild (with
--resolve-alternatives). Presumably the buildds can build it too. So I'm
not sure that this is a bug.

It does seem wrong to me that debian/rules says:
$(SHELL) debian/setup-mysql.sh $(MYSQL_PORT) $(MYSQL_DATA_DIR)
but debian/setup-mysql.sh has a shebang of #!/bin/sh. So what if the user's
shell is bash? This is the case in Raring (5.4.9-4ubuntu2) too.

Setting Importance to Medium as a workaround (sbuild) is available. I'm
still not sure whether this is a valid bug though, since I'm not sure
what the expectations are for the buildability of packages outside of
buildds.

This is a very severe issue for us, as we are running a booking

[Bug 1135453] Re: open-iscsi +mpio with multipathd init script order errors

2013-03-18 Thread Peter Petrakis
This might be self inflicted. First, we have really good multipath
documentation now.

You're better off following our docs first and then supplementing it with the
vendor
docs if it doesn't work. Many popular SANs have built-in support.

https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/dm-multipath-chapter.html

HP MSA's are already included in the built-in DB, your config file is likely
not needed so lets start by eliminating that as a variable by following these
directions.

https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/multipath-setting-up-dm-
multipath.html#multipath-setup-overview

plus your path alias, and,
# update-initramfs -u -k all

To copy the multipath.conf to the ramdisk.

Make all these changes, reboot, and before you shutdown again grab:
 * sudo dmsetup table
 * sudo udisks --dump
 * sudo -i; echo 'show config' | multipathd -k

and attach to the bug. Thanks.

I'm hoping you have a newer MSA and this is just a mp jumbled
config.

[Bug 1156721] [NEW] IMAGE_LOGOS does not work for the Debian logo

2013-03-18 Thread Florian Effenberger
Public bug reported:

I discovered an interesting cosmetical bug. When you change the
IMAGE_LOGOS setting to a different URL, it does not seem to work for the
Debian logo, at least not on Ubuntu 12.04. It seems the address is
hardcoded, but that might as well been an upstream bug.

[Bug 1150720] Re: [SRU] There is now a dependency on paramiko v1.8.0

2013-03-18 Thread Chuck Short
[Impact] When starting cinder-volume version 2012.1 on 12.04, cinder-
volume will give an error and exit:

SSHException: Error connecting via ssh: PID check failed. RNG must be
re-initialized after fork(). Hint: Try Random.atfork()

[Test Case]

1. Install 2012.1 on 12.04 from the Ubuntu Cloud Archive
2. Activate the storwize_svc driver
3. Start cinder-volume
4. Observe the exception when starting cinder-volume

[Regression Potential]

Now the layout is displayed as expected except for the Project-Overview
screen on Windows 7. However, IE 10 on Windows 8 appear to display
everything properly.

[Bug 1153626] Re: Multiple Interfaces and IPs not detected in AWS VPC

2013-03-18 Thread Michael Hale
My current thinking is that a udev rule will need to have a RUN hook
that updates /etc/network/interfaces or at a minimum runs the
appropriate ip commands based on what is discovered in the EC2 metadata
service. It seems like updating /etc/network/interfaces would be good
since ifup/ifdown rely on its configuration. According to the VPC docs
(http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/using-
eni.html#detach_eni) it appears that eth0 can *not* be removed from a
running instance while eth1 may be removed or added while the machine is
running. However, it is unclear if additional VIPs can be added to eth0
while the instance is running. I'm not sure how changes to the available
IPs would be detected without polling the meta-data service.

Don't bother with that, the bug is manifest inside the GPU. Your
chromium tabs is just one instance where the GPU stutters, but it is not
the only one and they are all not related to gradients (which is just a
different texture after all).

[Bug 75602]

2013-03-18 Thread Simon McVittie
(In reply to comment #17)
If you can get this working well and securely, I'm happy to
 review/merge.

On the other hand, I still think a more appropriate solution to the
problem you outlined on the mailing list and in your git repository
(dynamically-allocated users/groups without editing /etc) would be to
install a nss module that understands those users/groups; or if your
libc doesn't have pluggable nss, modify your libc to know about them
directly, like Android's Bionic libc.

If this feature request can't be satisfied in a way that is clearly
secure, I'm afraid I would prefer not to satisfy it at all.

[Bug 75602]

2013-03-18 Thread Krzysztof-konopko
Created attachment 7
Required plumbing for reading process credentials from procfs v. 2

OK, here's another attempt with the PID plumbing :)

This time I tried to focus on EXTERNAL authentication and took your
advice from the previous review. My main goal is to avoid touching
/etc/{passwd,group} if possible.

Here are the highlights:
- if the data sent along with AUTH message is a numeric UID, then try to use it
instead of looking in /etc/passwd.
See handle_server_data_external_mech(). The desired_identity is checked
against the UID from the socket so no risk here.

- the next step is determining whether the client can connect
bus_policy_allow_unix_user() takes additionally PID as an argument and tries to
get groups from /proc first (_dbus_unix_groups_from_pid() not implemented yet)
and falls back to the lookup based on UID.

- a new API function introduced to get the PID form the connection and pass it
to client authentication: dbus_connection_get_unix_process_id_unauth()
As opposite to dbus_connection_get_unix_process_id(), it doesn't try to
authenticate the user internally which at this stage would end up in the
endless loop.

Unfortunately got stuck with bus_policy_create_client_policy()
This function calls _dbus_unix_user_is_at_console() which unfortunately needs a
username so ends up looking in /etc/passwd (for UIDs without the entry in
/etc/passwd _dbus_user_database_lookup() fails with assertion). Need to think
how to avoid touching /etc/passwd here.
The goal here is to let D-Bus find out about the process from it's state
(socket credentials, procfs if possible) rather than pesky /etc/passwd. And a
natural way of doing it is to try the authentication with UIDs not present in
/etc/passwd.
I guess the priority in this bug is to focus on groups. So if I can't come up
with something reasonable for the problem above, I'll carry on with groups only.

[Bug 75602]

2013-03-18 Thread Simon McVittie
(In reply to comment #16)
I'll revisit this patch and address all your concerns focusing
only on EXTERNAL authentication and supplementary groups. My other goal is
also try to not even touch /etc/{passwd,group} at all if not absolutely
 necessary.

Great. If you can get this working well and securely, I'm happy to
review/merge.

Regarding setuid:

If an account has access to setuid/setgid executables and is available to
potentially rogue users, then the system is flawed, not D-Bus.

They don't have to be setuid executables that do anything inherently
unsafe on their own. su, sudo or pkexec is enough for the attack I
described: as long as its uid is 0 at the time that the dbus-daemon
looks at it, it doesn't matter that all it was doing is sitting at an
enter password: prompt.

Even if *your* system does not have any setuid executables, general-
purpose Unix does - su, sudo, pkexec are easy examples - and D-Bus is
meant to be functional and secure on general-purpose Unix, and in
particular, general-purpose Linux.

Now, this attack is mostly about what happens if you check credentials
per-message instead of per-connection, which you're not doing, so the
most straightforward version of the attack is avoided. I'm working on
the assumption that for bad things to happen, the client will have to
send a message. If it exec()s a privileged executable, it has lost
control and can no longer send bad messages.

However, I'm concerned about the possibility of a client queueing up its
side of the entire authentication handshake, the Hello message, and a
bad message into the socket's buffer, then exec()ing; is it possible
that the server could perform the /proc check, see the exec()'d
executable's credentials, and then act on the rest of the pre-queued
data from the *original* executable?

One way to avoid this would be to avoid the /proc stuff, and instead
extend the authentication handshake with a new verb similar to
NEGOTIATE_UNIX_FD:

C: AUTH EXTERNAL 31303030
S: OK
C: I_AM_IN_GROUP 100
S: OK
C: I_AM_IN_GROUP 101
S: OK
C: BEGIN

where the first message of I_AM_IN_GROUP is accompanied by
SCM_CREDENTIALS out-of-band data containing the corresponding gid.
That's likely to be somewhat more difficult than rummaging in /proc,
though.

 * cp /bin/bash audiobash chgrp audio audiobash chmod g+s audiobash

The user must be a member of `audio' group in order to chgrp a file to that
group. Why then ever bother with these tricks if the user is a *genuine*
 member of the group?

Please read Comment #9 if you're unfamiliar with Unix group semantics -
they are not what you might think they are.

If a user is not (according to /etc/group) a member of audio, but their
shell has the audio supplementary group due to pam_group, then they can
escalate from temporarily in audio group to permanently able to get
into audio group by copying a shell (or anything similar) and chmod'ing
it g+s. This makes session groups not very useful as a security measure
on general-purpose Unix (they can be secure on a system where users
cannot write to any filesystem mounted without nosuid and/or noexec, but
D-Bus is not restricted to those systems).

Again, no setuid/setgid should be available. In this instance `ping'
program should have cap_net_admin and cap_net_raw capabilities set. No UID
 change.

I admit that ping is a bad example; substitute anything that, in order
to perform its desired function, has to be setuid-root and world-
executable (or setgid to a desired group, for group-based permissions).
su is a particularly prominent example.

WRT the other question where you consider different groups in /etc/group and
in procfs, my opinion is that those in /etc/group should be ignored. My
view is that someone knew better and since they were privileged enough to
convince kernel to set those groups on the process, libdbus in this instance
 should respect that.

Fair enough. This is the option that's more likely to break existing
applications (which could be relying on the I get my uid's groups from
/etc/group semantics), but I don't think it'll break anything in
practice.

Now again you could argue that there's a race condition here and someone was
able to gain group membership the same way as for UID.

Perhaps. If there is one, please address it, if not, convince me of that
fact?

 I think it's up to
the system administrator/architect to provide or deny such opportunity. For
example the system I work on has all D-Bus services/clients running in their
individual sandboxes where one of the features is a separate mount namespace
with all filesystems mounted either ro,nosuid or noexec.

That's great for your system, but in a general-purpose Unix distribution
this is rarely an option, and I'm not willing to make D-Bus insecure
when used in a general-purpose distribution.

 * D-Bus configuration
If someone is able to configure D-Bus to use this feature (presumably this
 would be a
   system

[Bug 1055435] Re: [FFe][needs-packaging] new package classicmenu-indicator

2013-03-18 Thread Graham Inggs
For the record, the package I attached builds, installs and runs in
Raring. I ended up not adding a manpage as I found most other
indicator-type applications do not have them either.

I forgot to add (LP: #1055435) to the 'Initial release' changelog entry,
so if someone uploads could they add this please?

[Bug 1156460] Re: p7zip-full claims to include p7zip command, but does not

2013-03-18 Thread Tom Metro
As a workaround I extracted the wrapper script from the non-full
package:

% cd /tmp
% wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/93194080/p7zip_9.20.1%7Edfsg.1-4_amd64.deb
% mkdir p7zip_9.20.1%7Edfsg.1-4_amd64
% dpkg-deb -x p7zip_9.20.1~dfsg.1-4_amd64.deb p7zip_9.20.1~dfsg.1-4_amd64
% sudo cp p7zip_9.20.1~dfsg.1-4_amd64/usr/bin/p7zip /usr/local/bin/
% sudo mkdir /usr/locl/man/man1
% sudo cp p7zip_9.20.1~dfsg.1-4_amd64/usr/share/man/man1/p7zip.1.gz
/usr/local/man/man1/

Then I patched the script to s/7zr/7za/ for compatibility with p7zip-
full:

This:
% perl -i -e 's/7zr/7za/' /usr/local/bin/p7zip

should do the same as above, if you prefer not to use 'patch'.

I also created:
/usr/local/bin% ln -s /usr/bin/7za 7zip
/usr/local/bin% ln -s p7zip 7zip-pipe

because I find p7zip and 7za to be unintuitive names for a tool known as 7-zip.
It doesn't help that:
man -k 7zip
man -k zip
doesn't turn up any of these commands.

[Bug 1156477] [NEW] lenovo thinkpad t530 brightness keys regression

2013-03-18 Thread Seth Arnold
Public bug reported:

In 12.04 LTS and 12.10, the fn+f8 and fn+f9 keys properly adjusted my
Thinkpad T530's display brightness perfectly.

I upgraded to Raring on Mar 17, and the brightness keys no longer work.
The indicator appears but the slider does not slide and the screen
brightness does not change.

The brightness slider on the brightness and lock control panel feels
like it has lost granularity -- but I cannot recall the exact behavior
of the older slider.

[Bug 1070677] Re: Xorg fails to start because of Radeon Issue [(EE) RADEON(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version]

2013-03-18 Thread Pelládi Gábor
I have to correct myself. It doesn't matter if I have xserver-common and
xserver-xorg-core version 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.12 or 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.6.
In both cases xorg may or may not start. The kernel version is the key.

[Bug 1155021] Re: Add logind support (ConsoleKit is being deprecated)

2013-03-18 Thread Martin Pitt
For the record, using gnome-session's D-BUS API does work in general. I
can call it with gdbus and d-feet, and it always shuts down/reboots the
machine properly. To add some Heisenbug fun, when I run dbus-monitor
shutdown/reboot from the indicator works (I tried four times).

So this seems to be a race condition somewhere. When I install CK it
works, so that fallback should be kept, and also support logind.
