[Bug 1192046] [NEW] Ubuntu 13.04 crashes even after reinstallation
Public bug reported: I have had numerous crashes since installing Ubuntu 13.04 from disk. Reinstalling from the same disk did not solve the problem. Typically, mouse actions begins to become unresponsive, and when shortcuts to log off or shutdown are tried, nothing happens. Eventually, I resort to regular use of SysRq to reboot the machine. I've maintained a log - see below - that indicates that the problem does not appear related to the opening/use of specific applications by the user. I am not sure if I've placed this bug report against the right package. --- -Start of Log-- Crashes/crashing have been occurring since installation of Ubuntu 13.04 on 17 May 2013 (installed as dual boot beside existing Windows Vista system. I removed Firefox webapps related to Gmail and Gcalendar. 30/5/13 - having thought it was related to either Firefox or Libreoffice, when a crash happened without firefox being open (Libreoffice and Chrome were), I reinstalled Libreoffice. During the removal and re-installation process, I noticed that Writer retained my auto-correct and custom dictionary settings. Clearly, some files from the previous installation were carried across into the new one. 30/5/13 - Sometime after reinstallation of Libreoffice, I got an Ubuntu internal error message saying the error related to executable path was "...soffice.bin" i.e. Libreoffice Sometime after this, the computer crashed. 30/5/13 - I ran memtest86+ from the Grub screen and allowed it to to run 3 times. It detected no errors in this time. I found out that the place to look for crash log data is : /var/log/kern.log 30/5/13 - No crashes tonight - worked with libreoffice only, with occasional use of Chrome, closing Chrome when not needed. 31/5/13 - Today around 1300, the computer crashed about 30 min after startup. Libreoffice (Writer and Calc) were the only user-initiated programs running. Four files were open (a) xls, 2.7MB (b) xls, 134KB (c) doc, 641KB (d) odt, 44KB. Files (Nautilus?), Chrome and Firefox had been used earlier but weren't running at time of crash. I rebooted using SysRq s-u-b. 31/5/13 - 15.28 - Crash again. After operating for a short time (<20 minutes). User-initiated running software: Calc, Writer and Chrome. I rebooted using SysRq s-u-b. - 1/6/13 - I reinstalled Ubuntu 13.04 from CD. Before doing so, I saved a list of the installed packages. After reinstalling Ubuntu, I then reloaded these packages automtatically. Not everything got reloaded. e.g. not Chromium, not Tweak (even though these are in the standard Ubuntu repositories). I then worked for 1 hour without a crash using libreoffice. 2/6/13 - I had a crash at 1500 about 2 hours after booting up without having opened any Libreoffice apps. Graphics went funny and mouse became gradually less responsive. I rebooted using Alt+SysRq combination with s-u-b. I then ran "sudo dpkg --configure -a" which finished installation of some packages I'd been installing when the system crashed. I then ran "sudo apt-get -f install" and got the output in the point below - seems all is good! Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required: kde-l10n-engb Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove it. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. 2/6/13 - Around 1730, I had another crash. The only user-initiated software that was running was nautilus, chromium and Libreoffice (writer and calc). After rebooting, I got a couple of "Internal Error" messages for Ubuntu, one related to the executable path .../Xorg. 2/6/13 - Around 2300, I had another crash. The only user-initiated software I was running was libreoffice (writer and calc). 2/6/13 - At 2350, I got an Ubuntu Internal Error message reporting an issue with executable path /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin (Title: soffice.bin crashed with SIGABRT in raise() ) 3/6/13- I booted computer at 0815, and then it crashed around 1000. The only user-initiated software running was nautilus and libreoffice (writer and calc). Crash occurred immediately after opening Calc. Chromium had been running previously. 3/6/13 - Around midnight or soon after - computer crashed again, after/during being left alone for a while. Commence working without USB Stick--- Note: Prior to this, I was regularly reading/writing data to a USB stick as part of my normal operation. 4/6/13 - 1200 - I revised my working method that had included standard use of files from my USB Stick. My main library will now be on the Vista partition of my laptop, with backups on the family drive and my USB Stick. 4/6/13 - 1400 - Computer crashed again. No USB stick in use. [Bug 1173090] Re: Buffer overflow in ZSNES since update to raring
Thanks for your prompt review! New patch attached, some comments inline. > The correct syntax for closing a bug report will be LP: #1173090. Fixed. > -extern unsigned int soundcycleft, spc700read, timer2upd, xa, > PHnum2writesfxreg; > -extern unsigned int opcd, HIRQCycNext, oamaddr, curexecstate, nmiprevaddrl; > +extern unsigned int soundcycleft, timer2upd, xa, PHnum2writesfxreg; > +extern unsigned char spc700read[], xaread[], opcd[], oamread[]; > +extern unsigned int HIRQCycNext, oamaddr, curexecstate, nmiprevaddrl; > You turn some variables to arrays, but do not allocate memory anywhere — is that intentional? Yes. The basic bug that's triggering the buffer overflow detection is that zsnes declares a block of variables in assembly: NEWSYM oamaddr, dd 0 ; oam address NEWSYM bg1ptrx, dd 0 ; pointer to background1 NEWSYM bg2ptrx, dd 0 ; pointer to background2 NEWSYM bg3ptrx, dd 0 ; pointer to background3 NEWSYM bg4ptrx, dd 0 ; pointer to background4 ... And then declares the first in C: extern unsigned int ..., oamaddr, ...; And then, when loading a save file, attempts to read the entire block of variables using (effectively): fread(&oamaddr, 4, 14, fp); This normally works correctly, since the assembly definitions ensure that the variables are in fact contiguous in memory with "oamaddr". FORTIFY_SOURCE, however, reasonably determines that this code is doing a write of 4*14 bytes into an object of size 4, and aborts. My patch changes this by adding a new symbol -- oamread -- which the C code externs as an array, and then does the load into that. It's not the most elegant solution, but it's minimal and correct. > +export DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip > Why? Oops! Left that in from debugging my builds. [Bug 1039045] Re: Wine windows can't go fullscreen
I think the "Legacy Fullscreen Support" workaround might be broken, as the only way I'm able to get wine to fullscreen now is by patching wine to not set _MOTIF_WM_HINTS. Patch to wine is attached for information. I'm not sure that it's the right way to do it, but this patch makes wine fullscreen in compiz again for me. [Bug 1192037] [NEW] rsyslog shuts down too soon with Upstart
Public bug reported: The Upstart configuration file (/etc/init/rsyslog.conf) that appears to come with rsyslog 5.8.6-1ubuntu8 contains the stanza "stop on runlevel [06]". This results in some applications being unable to log their shutdown messages. This is a particular problem if those messages are important, such as from the STONITH meatware module. This would also be a problem for any application that needed to report trouble during a shutdown. I don't see any viable alternative to simply removing the "stop" stanza from /etc/init/rsyslog.conf. ** Affects: rsyslog (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1192037 Title: rsyslog shuts down too soon with Upstart To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rsyslog/+bug/1192037/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1053985] Re: gecko-mediaplayer package should not bundle so many plugins for security reasons
gecko-mediaplayer is a single plugin with an emulation layer for the various plugins. So the same plugin that does windows media also does quicktime, and others. It turns out that this also won't build without gnome-settings-daemon >=3.8. In case the eventual libdvdread MIR fails, I also tried to revert https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-disk-utility/commit/?id=cb3afaea Because I didn't have gnome-settings-daemon 3.8 installed here I didn't make sure it builds with the revert patch or still works. [Bug 1190507] Re: Twitter no longer works in version 3.0.5
Alright, how does that look? ** Description changed: Version 3.0.5 uses an old Twitter API which is no longer functional, but this version is still the default in Quantal and earlier. These distros need to be updated to a working version. + + [Impact] + This bug renders Twitter services unusable from Bitlbee on 12.04 and previous Ubuntu releases. The proposed fix is to upgrade them to Bitlbee 3.2 or newer which use the new (now mandatory) Twitter API. + + [Test Case] + Anyone who already has Bitlbee linked to a Twitter account on these releases will find it not working since the API change, without doing anything themselves. + Those who don't already have it set up should be able to install the 'bitlbee' package and follow the instructions on http://wiki.bitlbee.org/HowtoTwitter to link it to a Twitter account, although those steps will likely fail as well. + + [Regression Potential] + Updating to version 3.2 shouldn't break anything, although the Twitter UI is slightly different from previous versions (IDs shown in hex, more frequent updates, able to receive DMs). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1190507 Title: Twitter no longer works in version 3.0.5 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bitlbee/+bug/1190507/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1187970] Re: apparmor prevents custom printer driver from executing
Yes grub2 is a little different, but its not too bad once you get used to it use the cursor keys to move to the entry you want to edit press e move to the kernel line which will look something like linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-23-generic root=UUID=7d19c7bc-50aa-4266-9ab7-332c92f5e3aa ro quiet splash pcie_aspm=force drm.vblankoffdelay=1 i915.semaphores=1 nmi_watchdog=0 $vt_handoff add apparmor=0 to the end or anywhere after root= really use ctrl-x to boot You can directly edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg but its not recommended as your changes will be lost any time that a kernel update is applied. If you want a kernel config to survive a kernel update you should edit /etc/default/grub/ After editing /etc/default/grub you will need to run sudo update-grub To regenerate your grub.cfg. It seems like a pita but then the change will survive next time you get a kernel update. The apparmor module is present (it is built into the kernel), but it is not active or enforcing any policy. It is turned off. If you do dmesg | grep AppArmor if apparmor is enabled you get something like [0.008000] AppArmor: AppArmor initialized [0.813392] AppArmor: AppArmor Filesystem Enabled and disabled by apparmor=0 [0.008000] AppArmor: AppArmor disabled by boot time parameter So apparmor is not causing the print failure you are seeing. Restart can be a little confusing. Let me try again. There are two copies of apparmor policy. What is stored in /etc/apparmor.d/ and what is currently active in the kernel. The restart command tries to sync the kernel to reflect with what is in /etc/apparmor.d/ If for example you delete a profile file from /etc/apparmor.d/ you would want that profile to also be removed from the kernel, when you run restart to sync /etc/apparmor.d and the loaded system policy. In this case your kernel is missing an interface patch that allows the restart command to introspect the kernel and determine what policy is currently loaded. In this case restart can go through and load policy that exists in /etc/apparmor.d/ but it can't detect that the kernel has some policy loaded that is not in /etc/apparmor.d You can reboot instead of using restart to clear out the loaded policy from the kernel. This should not affect your current printing problems as you are not deleted files in /etc/apparmor.d/, just noting that this behavior is broken with your current kernel. As for your kernel it most certainly is not an official Ubuntu kernel. What DVD did you install it from? The official Ubuntu kernels have the apparmor patches applied and have a uname -a that looks like Linux ortho2 3.8.0-23-generic #34-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 29 20:22:58 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux your kernel version string is showing its a derivative of 3.8. but the rest of the version string is all wrong 13-030813-generic #201305111843 SMP Sat May 11 22:52:24 UTC 2013 i686 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1187970 Title: apparmor prevents custom printer driver from executing To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apparmor/+bug/1187970/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1170114] Re: Add --disable-component option
FYI: Are you aware that add-apt-repository has an option to do that? You can simply 'add-apt-repository multiverse' to enable multiverse and 'add-apt-repository -r multiverse' to disable multiverse. In this context, it would even make sense to remove the --enable- component and --enable-ppa options from software-properties-gtk, as that's what add-apt-repository stands for. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1170114 Title: Add --disable-component option To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-properties/+bug/1170114/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1187970] Re: apparmor prevents custom printer driver from executing
I'm not familiar with the new grub. grub.cfg is more complex than the old grub I'm used to. So my first attempt to restart failed to deactivate apparmor. Then I edited grub.cfg and put the apparmor=0 statement dierctly after root=x and before ro This time I think apparmor is less effective. See below: janos@Andraslinux:~$ sudo aa-status [sudo] password for janos: apparmor module is loaded. apparmor filesystem is not mounted. janos@Andraslinux:~$ dmesg | tail [ 56.010269] composite sync not supported [ 56.010284] composite sync not supported [ 56.672092] init: plymouth-stop pre-start process (1095) terminated with status 1 [ 69.534864] composite sync not supported [ 69.534877] composite sync not supported [ 72.344126] composite sync not supported [ 72.344140] composite sync not supported [ 72.403431] composite sync not supported [ 72.403445] composite sync not supported [ 194.610821] printdriver[1974]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp bfd013fc error 4 in printdriver[8048000+b000] janos@Andraslinux:~$ Howver, as you see I still get the segfault. Could it be because apparmor module is still loaded? I'm sorry, I'm confused a littbit about your last paragraph on restart. One more point: in your previous comment you state that "Alright, because you aren't using an Ubuntu kernel, or a kernel with the interface patches". Public bug reported: There have been similar bug reports to this one, such as bug #1009338 and bug #1027868, but I believe this case is different. The problem I am having is that even after I set the refresh rate options in compiz to 60 Hz (after disabling the "Detect Refresh Rate" option), a reboot will have the settings revert. If I change settings in the compiz config settings manager, they should remain even after a reboot. ** Affects: compiz Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1192028 Title: Compiz refresh rate resets to 50 Hz automatically To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1192028/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1187970] Re: apparmor prevents custom printer driver from executing
yes that is the output that is expected for those two commands when the kernel isn't patched. aa-status - has a bug where it is incorrectly reporting it does not have privilege to read the profile set. It is mis-interpreting the failure to find the profiles file as a denial to access it. restart - will warn about network rules not being able to be enforced by the kernel but that will not affect the actual reload. In this case removal can't happen as the restart command can't determine which profiles exist in the kernel vs. what profiles exist in /etc/apparmor.d/ It will load all the profiles that exist in apparmor.d but can't remove from the kernel a profile that was removed from apparmor.d/ in this case you have to explicitly tell apparmor you removed it from the directory by using apparmor_parser -R on the file before removing it from apparmor.d/ or hitting the low level interface. Looking forward to the results from the reboot -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1187970 Title: apparmor prevents custom printer driver from executing To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apparmor/+bug/1187970/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
