[Bug 1208455] Re: general protection fault running apt-get inside double nested kvm VM

2013-08-22 Thread James Hunt
The latest advice for running on Canonistack (kvm guest instance where
nested=Y is to):

- Only run on a 64-bit Canonistack guest instance.
- Modify bin/prepare-testbed and bin/run-adt-test to start the autopkgtest VM
using 'qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm'.
- Have the DEP8 test running inside the autopkgtest VM start its VM using 'qemu
-enable-kvm'.

Using the above but appending '-nographic /tmp/kvm.log 21' to each
kvm command-line to allow console log capture results in the first
created VM (the one created by prepare-testbed/bin/run-adt-test) locking
up. Unfortunately, there is no output in kvm.log.

I'll retry without '-nographic' as smb has noticed this seems to affect
the stability of the overall kvm stack. Even if this does work, it is
clearly not ideal to discard console output (unless there is another
magic qemu option we can try?)

[Bug 1208455] Re: general protection fault running apt-get inside double nested kvm VM

2013-08-22 Thread Stefan Bader
They can be even together. The -nographic removes any emulated graphics
card. I am not sure in detail how the cloud images work, but I believe
serial line as a console is always on. Depending on which release (in
that case I think it is the qemu user-space) the used setup would not
work even. Because -monitor stdio redicrects the monitor to stdio and
the default of serial was stdio, too. So they did clash (might depend on
-nographic as well).

So when playing without -nogrphics, and crashes persist, you might play
with -vga std which would give a std vga card instead of cirrus.

[Bug 1215386] [NEW] lxc-start tries to change apparmor profile to unconfined

2013-08-22 Thread Andre Nathan
Public bug reported:

When starting a container that has 'lxc.aa_profile = unconfined' on its
configuration file, lxc-start fails with

  lxc-start: Read-only file system - failed to change apparmor profile
to unconfined

This happens because the buffer used by lxc-start to read the process'
apparmor profile from /proc/PID/attr/current is not properly NULL-
terminated. A patch for this has been applied upstream and is available

Thanks Hector,

yes especially since you are running the VMs from the command line, you
should be able to:

./configure --target-list=x86_64-softmmu
make

Then execute x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm plus all your

[Bug 1213879] Re: kernel fault ovs 1.10.1 + linux 3.11

2013-08-22 Thread Joseph Salisbury
@James Page, Did this bug just start happening after a new kernel
update? Was there a prior kernel that did not get this fault? If so,
we can perform a bisect to identify the commit that introduced the
regression.

Also, the 3.11.0-3.7 kernel is now available, which is rebased to
upstream v3.11-rc6. Can you test this latest kernel to confirm it still
exhibits this bug?

[Bug 1212051] Re: Windows XP guest lose connectivity with bridged network

2013-08-22 Thread Hector Perez
Ok,
We have created another WindowsXP VM, (a copy of the original one), and this
copy have been executed with x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm and
all the parameters.

The VM started ok.
Now we have to wait a prudential period of time until we can say that the
problem is solved, because the freeze problem occurs in an aleatory pattern.
Thanks, and we will inform the result.

[Bug 1214618] Re: apparmor policy_version is incorrectly set

2013-08-22 Thread Zsombor Egri
JSON cannot store the decimals of a number if those are all zero.
Therefore x.0 will always be stored as x. If we need to store the
decimals (i.e. major.minor format), then we need to store it as strings.
You could then convert those strings into float.

On the other hand, just wondering, shouldn't we also deal with
subversions, i.e. major.minor.subversion? This format cannot ever be
stored in a numeric field for sure...

Btw, I'm the upstream developer (and maintain that PPA you linked to).
Keep me updated on the MIA-debian-developer situation, if needed I'd be
perfectly happy to take over maintenance in debian... (I used to
maintain the CoffeeScript packaging, ie

I'm familiar with the Debian development process).

[Bug 1215287] [NEW] [wrap-and-sort] Drops commented lines inappropriately.

2013-08-22 Thread Robert Bruce Park
Public bug reported:

So debian/control supports # comments, much like bash or python does,
and comments are good! They help explain things to other maintainers.
But wrap-and-sort just discards them like so much garbage. It should
probably be fixed to preserve commented lines.

[Bug 902557] Re: 10ec:8176 Wireless not working in 12.04 for rtl8192ce (RTL8188CE)

2013-08-22 Thread nobody
What name would give to the people that do the kind of Invalid -
Confirmed - Invalid - Confirmed toggling that was taking place before
I used that name? At least that silly nonsense stopped!

It stopped because penalvch stopped changing a known and verified problem from
confirmed to invalid.
I would point the blame where it is due. panalvch. Not everybody for trying
to keep a known and verified bug report open.

I have grown rather tired of the kinds of things that are said and done
on these lists concerning the Realtek drivers. I am not an employee of
Realtek, nor am I paid by them. In addition, I have no knowledge of what
is needed to make the chip work other than what I deduce by reading the
code! You can also do that.

This is why I stated that those working to develop a fix for this unholy
dung-pile of a problem is the result of poor/lazy development on the
manufacturers part. I know it takes a lot and requires a lot of programming /
reversing knowledge.
When I say they have my gratitude, I mean all who are participating in creating
patches, testing, documenting, ETC.
I would suggest that when these people make comments about a issue that is NOT
the direct fault of linux devs that they should be informed to shut their
ignorant mouths and go back to their beloved windows. Because they and their
ignorance are not needed. If you can't help, than simply LEAVE !! Support the
team or LEAVE - Period

One other thing that irks me is that when I post a potential fix in the
form of a patch, it might take one or two WEEKS before anyone tries it
and reports back. By that time, it is difficult to remember what is
happening or even why I thought the change might be a good idea. In
addition, you can imagine how high I think the priority is for that
particular complaint.

This is VERY understandable, and I'm sure I'm not the only one to appreciate
any patients given. I must say however, I fall in line more with Ryan McClures'
comments. Although I generally attempt to refrain from making posts in public
forums, specifically if I am not an expert. I USUALLY only post if I know for
a fact I can help.
This is because two things usually happen.
1) I could possibly derail the forward momentum of the project.
2) So I don't have to be scolded, or flamed, or ridiculed, or you name it, by
hot-headed elitest peeps who simply just yell at others for asking questions.
I always try searching and use various google operators to limit the numbers of
possible hits to research. But sometimes it's just faster if somebody
knowledgeable can spit out a fast 1,2,3 how-to without a lot of details which
can then lead a person to a more detailed search. ( I think I proved this
point because I have not asked any questions in this website, because I search
for answers. But this slows things down a lot).

So as for you having to wait so long for testers I would be willing to
help with testing but only if small steps are given when a request for
testing is posted. This way I don't have to waste everybody's time with
incorrect or incomplete data. It can sometimes take a long time to find
relevant info to what you need to accomplish and further test it before
you attempt to try the said update or patch so the resulting data can be
accurate.

You mentioned Fedora... (I love Fedora and the only reason I'm not using it now
is because of this unholy realtec problem and no they don't deserve to have
their name capitalized or spelled correctly). Lubuntu 12.04 uses a kernel
3.2.0.23 which works flawlessly with the crummy realtec wireless nic. Granted I
have to block it from updating the kernel but I do still get program updates.
I love Fedora because of the massive amounts of documentation from top to
bottom and it is extremely well organized. I have learned a lot about linux
from that distro and I even downloaded all the documentation and keep it on my
ipod. But ubuntu isn't fedora.

As for my ability to help I would give myself a rating as follows:
Dangerous / Intermediate user of linux who is not afraid to mess with stuff.
But I do only have so much time in a day to figure stuff out and having zero
guidance makes for burning through that time pretty quick with little or no
results. So I guess if you want fast results than (with all due respect) don't
be elitist and have patients when people ask questions if they don't understand
what you're talking about.

I have been told numerous times by many people that I should be a teacher. I
don't claim to be smarter than anybody at all, I just have patients.
If I were wanting fast results I would make a post on the topic stating that
questions are welcome and GOOD, as virtually no questions are dumb unless they
are intended to be dumb. This would allow unsure people like myself to brave
asking how to do something we don't understand. which could makes things move
along much faster. If a troll comes in and asks a dumb question than don't
waste your breath, simply

We don't get this issue during normal modeset, so I suspect the regs are
in a wonky state after resume. Perhaps a hard reset before asic_init

2013-08-22 Thread nobody
OH crap BTW!!

This is NOT a ubuntu only problem. This problem, as I have stated in my
first post, affects debian, ubuntu, fedora, arch linux. I have not tried
other distros besides those listed.

So Larry, if you are much more knowledgeable in fedora than say ubuntu
it might be a good idea to work on the problem on that distro. The way I
see it, since it is not distro specific that if it is fixed in one
distro it may be easier to apply to other distros.

Thats just my humble opinion.

[Bug 1214618] Re: apparmor policy_version is incorrectly set

2013-08-22 Thread Zoltan Balogh
I have checked if there is a way in the JS level to change the
representation of numerical values. On the JSON level the sringify
function does the first conversion we have a chance to intrude. It can
be given a replace function to overule the conversion:

--
function replacer(key, value) {
  if (key == 'policy_version'){
var ending_zero = .0;
var version_value = String(value);
var new_value = String(version_value.concat(ending_zero));
return new_value;
}
return value;
}
function toJSON() {
return JSON.stringify(jsonData, replacer);

}
--

Regardless of my clearly desperate and slightly hackish way of forcing
the .0 at the end f the value, the JS either drops the .0 when it
converts to numerical value or kindly puts the value as a string 1.0
to the JSON file.

I assume that unless we change the very core behavior of JS how it
handles numerical values it would be way simpler to store the version
numbers in a string just as the application version is stored in a
string.

Re: [Bug 946899] Re: [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung

2013-08-22 Thread Stan Schymanski
Thanks, peterbo. Sorry, got confused. Of course, I'm running it on
13.04, too. I have had these really weird crashes before (rebooting by
itself) and they went away after one of the kernel upgrades, maybe even
when upgrading from 12.10 to 13.04. Got the Hangcheck timer elapsed ones
instead. That is, sometimes, when I return to my laptop, it is turned
off even when I'm pretty sure I left it on, so maybe they have just been
happening while idle. Now with the rc5 kernel I got the original crash
(without error log) within hours again, so I got discouraged from trying
any further. It's my work laptop, running dual monitors, and I really
can't afford to experiment too much as I need it to run and do its job.
I still can't believe that this is such a persistent bug (several
bugs?). The Linux kernel used to be considered bomb-proof! Apparently
its bugs, too...

On 21/08/13 16:04, peterbo wrote:
 schymans: I am running 13.04 so have not tested on 12.10. The crash you
 describe sounds a bit worse than the gpu hang but I obviously cannot be
 sure. My laptop never rebooted when the hang occurred though.

 I must admit that I had one hang with rc5 after 7 days, however the
 error message was different than the usual Hangcheck timer elapsed. It
 was something with a ring - cannot remember any more of it. It
 happened after having dual monitors connected, suspending my laptop and
 then opening it without any monitors connected. Am on rc6 now and no
 problems yet.

 I cannot seem to force the hang, neither by running glxspheres, dragging
 windows fast across the desktop or playing with compiz effetcs/settings.

Or, just changing the

Gnomism, Pidgin isn't expected to work without some supporting things
running alongside it, panels or whatever, so it starts up minimized,
with no way of opening the running applicaiton without a panel or dock

[Bug 241604] Re: Maximum zoom in Evince is 400%

2013-08-22 Thread sdaau
Just wanted to note - I tried an alternative viewer like in the OP; on
my Ubuntu 11.04, `xpdf` crashes as in:

package : Ubuntu

What worked for me was to use `mupdf` instead: it seems to use dpi
instead of a zoom level in percent, but doesn't seem to have the same
max zoom limitation as `evince`.

[Bug 1208455] Re: general protection fault running apt-get inside double nested kvm VM

2013-08-22 Thread James Hunt
The latest advice for running on Canonistack (kvm guest instance where
nested=Y is to):

- Only run on a 64-bit Canonistack guest instance.
- Modify bin/prepare-testbed and bin/run-adt-test to start the autopkgtest VM
using 'qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm'.

2013-08-22 Thread Michael Nelson

christopher.m.penal...@gmail.com wrote:

 Michael Nelson, the next step would be to bisect from Precise to
 Quantal, in order to identify the commit that caused this regression.
 Could you please do this following
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

Hi Christopher. Sorry, I don't see why that would be relevant.

It worked in Precise I assume because I bought it with Ubuntu pre-installed
(with custom drivers? I'm not sure). Anyway, the issue that I experienced
in Quantal/Raring was fixed in Saucy - I had working suspend/resume up
until this week - and is not the same issue that I started experiencing
just this week.

So, when I get time, I'll follow the kernel bisection wiki page for the
saucy kernel releases and get the specific last known working version.

[Bug 1215297] [NEW] Sync python-json-patch 1.0-2 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2013-08-22 Thread Jackson Doak
Public bug reported:

Please sync python-json-patch 1.0-2 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * Use io.open() to open jsonpatch.py with utf-8 encoding in setup.py so it
works in both Python 2 and 3 (lp: #1185739)
  * debian/control, debian/rules: Add python3 support.
  * debian/control: add python3-json-patch
  * debian/patches/fix-python3-tests.patch: Fix tests while running python3.

All of the above were fixed in debian

Changelog entries since current saucy version 1.0-1ubuntu2:

python-json-patch (1.0-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Ran wrap-and-sort.
  * Adds python3 support.
  * Adds patch to fix unit tests for python3.
  * Adds README.md in docs.
  * Cleans correctly (can build twice the package).
  * Standards-Version: 3.9.4

[Bug 884032] Re: Unity launcher shows sepparate icons for same program (okular).

2013-08-22 Thread Albert Astals Cid
Okular does not use different icons when you open a pdf and when you
open a dvi, what made you think that? Did you even try it before
declaring it was weird for doing that?

And not, it's not starting different instances for pdf and dvi, it's
just starting a new instance of the same binary for every file you open,
be it a different file format or not.

[Bug 1213403] Re: 0cf3:7015 Whole system freeze with TL-WN821N USB wifi adapter

2013-08-22 Thread James Clemence
Bug appears to exist upstream in version 3.11.0-031100rc6.201308181835.
Have added the above tags as requested. Basically rebooting into the new
kernel leads to the same issue with a complete freeze until the USB key
is unplugged and replugged. At that time, the system returns to normal.
I haven't had it lock up yet during normal use, only on reboot. Attached
is a syslog from an affected reboot.

** Description changed:

  My server occasionally suddenly hangs, and the wifi network cuts out.
  This is then only fixed by unplugging and replugging in the USB wifi
  adapter in question, and then the system suddenly restores itself and
  works again. When the system freezes, the whole input/output system
  fails, and any plugged in keyboards will not work until the USB stick is
  unplugged and replugged. This is a very frustrating bug, and has started
  happening with significant frequency recently.

** Description changed:

  Booting Ubuntu 13.04 32bit on a Lenovo W520, I get no wifi at startup.
  Network manager shows only Wired, Broadband and VPN.

  In dmesg, I see multiple instances of vmalloc allocation failure.
  See attached dmesg-w520-3.8.0-25-generic.txt

  One of them happens at loading of iwlwifi (which may explain the lack of
  wifi).

  The only workaround I found was to stick with the 12.10 kernel (3.5).
