Re: [Bug 1180777] Re: Windows 7 VM freeze on Ubuntu 12.04 KVM

2013-09-09 Thread f3a97
Hi,

Eventually I've been able to reproduce the hang.

Just to recap the experiment: I have recorded network traffic during RDP
connection hangs. The result is that the VM has do not experience total
network loss: network traffic continues to flow (tcpdump from the host on
ports other than 3389).

On 5 September 2013 15:22, Stefano Doni stefano.d...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hi Hector,

My network configuration is different than yours - it is not bridged.
Perhaps this might help to diagnose the issue?

I'm now trying to sniff network traffic generated by the VM and see what
happens during RDP hangs: does it still poll outside servers (i.e. google
 drive) or will become disconnected?

I'll report the results, stay tuned.

 On 19 August 2013 00:42, Hector Perez hepe...@hotmail.com wrote:

 Hi,

 I reported the #1212051 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qemu-
 kvm/+bug/1212051https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qemu-kvm/+bug/1212051)
bug with Windows XP, but reading this case i think it
 could be the same issue.

I connect via RDP to my windows XP VM and after a while it seems to
freeze, then, I connect via VNC an without doing anything the
communications are restored between the VM and the outside world. So i
 can connect again with RDP.

Even more, if i leave an open connection with VNC (minimized because is
more slow than RDP), connecting via RDP has no trouble and no problem of
 freeze (lost of communications) occurs.

f3a97, Could you do this test and tell if you have the same experience
than i?, If so, my bug is the same of this.
 Thanks.

 Title:
Windows 7 VM freeze on Ubuntu 12.04 KVM

   New
Status in “qemu-kvm” package in Ubuntu:
   Confirmed

 Bug description:
   Hi,

I have recently setup a Windows 7 VM on KVM and started using it
   through remote desktop.

What happens is that, after some hours of usage, the remote desktop
connection freezes. I thought it was a remmina bug, as the it was
enough to kill and restart it to successfully connect again to the VM.

However, today I've switched to a different RDP client (2X Client
chromium app) and the freeze just happened again!

   Some information:
   - the host and the VM are completely idle when the freeze occurs
   - I've tried sniffing the network packets toward the RDP port during
the freeze and found that the client is sending packets but no packet is
 sent back

Could this be a KVM issue? How can I further debug this one (I expect
   the freeze to happen again...)?

[Bug 1220950] Re: [MIR] open-vm-tools

2013-09-09 Thread Scott Moser
I explicitly do not like the ability to modify the guest. I'm very
much adverse to Microsoft's attempt at the same thing in
walinux-agent, giving their hypervisor the ability to run arbitrary code
as root inside the instance. I think this is unsupportable design and do
 not want to facilitate it.

This concern is really about the images, not about the fitness of the
 package for main.

Only sort of.

I also think that the concern is valid for systems where there is a
facility for first boot provisioning, but invalid on systems where agent
provisioning is needed. And I think that this is really an ideological
one. To say that we don't want to facilitate it means that we are
leaving users that use or run on first-bootless hypervisors. But the
same could be said for chef and puppet, and other configuration
management suites; the difference here is who is running the code.

Yes. That is the important difference. If a user changes something in
their first boot code, and it breaks, its their fault, or at very least
they have control to fix it, because they (should) know exactly what they
changed, and can update or address it.

If the hypervisor changes the code that *it* chooses to execute on the
users' behalf from inside their VMs, and *that* breaks, whose fault is it?

My issue with this is not hypervisor vendor nor hypervisor specific. The
issue is that some party other than the user is going to attempt to
execute code inside the instance, and that Ubuntu cannot know what that
code is, nor control its behavior or release process. In order to be
cross distro, this code is quite likely to do things like check
/etc/lsb_release or /etc/issue, and try to derive information from other
files in /etc/ (/etc/udev.d, /etc/shadow ..). It also possibly does
things that Ubuntu would not certify as supported. Perhaps it enables
additional repositories or loads additional kernel modules.

There is no sane way in which Ubuntu could hope to keep our code working
across releases or even within an SRU. Any change Ubuntu makes can
potentially break this code.

There is essentialy no difference here between *user* written code that
does that and hypervisor-vendor written code, other than who can fix the
code. If the change comes from the hypervisor, then the user quite
possibly has no way to fix, and Ubuntu quite possibly has no way to fix.
This leaves the user and ubuntu dependent on the hypervisor to never break
anything.

There is a shift here from the platform that code ran on being bios and
hardware to being some all knowing entity that changes from day to day.
From the OS perspective, this is very difficult to support.
That is what scares me.

Arguably, in a cloud scenerio, a user has to inherently trust the
 vendor..

If our goal is to be the best operating system in the cloud, then
providing for a supported, official way to provision on systems like
WIndows Azure and VMware just make sesne. Ideology asside, the question
should be whether the package meets the contraints of main inclusion
and if the package is useful.

Its not just idealogy. By putting this in main, we're essentially
promising that we're not going to break it in an SRU for 5 years, and we
have no real way of doing that.

I agree that its possible I'm overstating this. I don't know just how
clever the hypervisor thinks it is, but by providing the interface to
execute arbitrary code, we're explicitly allowing it to do whatever you
want. And by inclusion by default, we're passing that agreement on to
the end user.

I consider that level of trust significantly different than the inherent
trust in a cloud provider to not do things like poke at an instances'
memory and glean information from that.

[Bug 1215386] Re: lxc-start tries to change apparmor profile to unconfined

2013-09-09 Thread Andre Nathan
Hi

The issue is still not fixed with the patch. While there's no more
garbage in the buffer that stores the apparmor profile read from /proc,
that data is still terminated by a \n, (ie., the profile is returned
as, eg. unconfined\n instead of unconfined). This causes comparisons
with the unconfined string further in the code to fail.

[Bug 1223033] [NEW] need kernel and initramfs data on maas.ubuntu.com

2013-09-09 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

We need kernel and initramfs data on maas.ubuntu.com in simplestreams
format.

The plan is to provide this data for d-i installs on maas.ubuntu.com and
eventually (ideally) get some similar data on a non-maas specific
.ubuntu.com (possibly archive.ubuntu.com).

I have a tool that scrapes archive.ubuntu.com right now at
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~smoser/maas/netinst2ss/files

essentially ,
  bzr branch lp:~smoser/maas/netinst2ss
  cd netinst2ss
  ./setup
  PYTHONPATH=$PWD ./netinst2ss

that creates out.d/ , which has content we want available on
maas.ubuntu.com/images/installer

missing right now is that it doesn't create the index.json data or the
signed.

The two things left to do:
 * think about how (if) ubuntu+1 is special or left out (ie, only in 'daily').
Not sure how to distinguish that.
 * need to sign and create index.sjson

[Bug 685096] Re: USB Passthrough not working for Windows 7 guest

2013-09-09 Thread Serge Hallyn
Upstream git head still gives me this problem, as does back to 0.14.0.

Note however that the same qemu builds, with the same usb stick, work
fine using a linux guest.

The same stick, inserted to the same windows version on native hardware
also works.

So it's not bad hardware, it's not hardware unsupported by windows, and
qemu *is* passing the usb device through sufficiently that windows
SHOULD be able to make use of it.

So this appears to be something specific that windows wants.

I've seen mention of windows registry tricks involving removal of top
and bottom filters for the device... I haven't tested that to see if
that would be a workaround.

the test case in the bug description is passing for me. Can you please

a clean install?

Based on your comment I thought it might be that you had disabled

[Bug 1222654] [NEW] package ttf-mscorefonts-installer 3.4+nmu1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade

2013-09-09 Thread bobhurt
Public bug reported:

Similar to all the others. This stupid message occurs with every
install of any app and every update, causing the process to error out.
Canonical MUST FIX THIS THING before it makes me crazy. Find some
public domain equivalents for those fonts. This erro showed up after I
installed wine and had a hitch somehow, UBUNTU 13.04, then tried to
install something else. I looked and found numerous remedies, but none
of them worked, and now I have forgotten WHAT I tried. If I have to
put up with this, I might as well go back to (G) Windows. DO I
really need to say I FULLY EXPECT NO ERROR MESSAGE and I FULLY EXPECT
that the ttf-mscorefonts-installer will complete without error and
without harassing me with a STUPID license agreement? If I need the
fonts for wine, OF COURSE I ACCEPT IT. So it should just alert me that
I must abide by the agreement. Nobody reads the damned thing anyway. I
certainly don't.

We really need a way to forcibly REINSTALL and ACCEPT THE LICENSE
agreement (assuming that's the problem). How shall I do that?

[Bug 543119] Re: Lenovo IdeaPad touch inductive SlideNav panel does not work

2013-09-09 Thread RussianNeuroMancer
** Description changed:

Lenovo Yxx0 laptops have a touch inductive panel
http://www.gigamark.com/images/stories/8/Lenovo_y550/Untitled-4.jpg contains
the pretty cool navigation slidebar
http://www.fcenter.ru/img/article/notebooks/Lenovo_IdeaPad_Y550P/152399.jpg
  How SlideNav should work:
- User assign applications to the numbers. When user want to launch one of
them, they touch slidenav in any place (touch but did not raise finger), after
that driver show applications list on the screen
http://www.fcenter.ru/img/article/notebooks/Lenovo_IdeaPad_Y550P/152341.jpg
User move finger to the lift or to the right, until needed application was
selected on the screen. After apllication selected user raise finger and this
application started.

I tried use tp-smapi-dkms for detect slidenav buttons, but it's not work for
me with error: No such device.
Even if I was able to detect slidenav buttons it's not enough - there need a
program that works like an official Lenovo driver (show applications list when
user touch panel).

[Bug 493720] Re: Can't reconnect to wireless network after upgrade to 1.25 unless I reboot

2013-09-09 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
slumbergod, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder,
but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel,
please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is
fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 496266] Re: webcam support regression with 2.6.31-16.53-generic

2013-09-09 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Andres Monroy-Hernandez, this bug was reported a while ago and there
hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is
still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest
development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder,
but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel,
please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is
fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next

Travis Cole, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest server release of
Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://releases.ubuntu.com/raring/

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal

and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder,
but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel,
please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is
fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please

CID: 201303-13031 Dell Alienware X51

According to bug 1199342, this video card should be supported by
nvidia-graphics-drivers-319.
But it can't boot to desktop with nvidia-319 / nvidia-319-updates driver.

Steps:
1. Install 12.04.3, boot to desktop.
2. Install the proprietary nvidia-319 video driver via jockey.
3. Reboot.

Expected results:
1. System should be able to boot to desktop with the proprietary driver.

Actual results:
1. Unable to boot to destop, the screen is totally black (screen won't enter
idle mode). But I can still access this system via ssh.

[Bug 669140] Re: Install to usb stick has slow read/write performace

2013-09-09 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
nlowen, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder,
but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel,
please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is
fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 388595] [NEW] Nautilus very slow copying huge amount of data

2013-09-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hello everybody,

1- When copying large amount of data (i.e. 4,1 GB ~ 90 files, ~ 50 Mb
each one) to a USB HD (FAT32) with Nautilus, the transfer is very slow.
About 3 M Sec in some circumstances.

2- the same with a big file 3 GB, it's much slower than file copying
in XP or Vista.

3- while copying a huge amount of data to my USB HD drive, the computer
seems to slow down: windows switching in gnome is much slower, using big
application (i.e. Mozilla) is really slower

It's real annoying, please fix this problem, I would like to have
performances comparable to my windows environment

Thanks
Sergio

[Bug 388595] Re: Nautilus very slow copying huge amount of data

2013-09-09 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
seraus, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder,
but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel,
please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is
fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
