[Bug 1070598] Re: Please make the shopping results in the Unity dash opt-in

2013-12-17 Thread William Paul
I generally like Ubuntu and am actively using 13.10, but I am not as
excited to promote others in using Ubuntu until the online Dash search
feature is made opt-in (as I do care about my privacy so I have already
turned off this capability). I know of many Linux enthusiasts who have
switched to another distro simply due to this opt-out policy (and will
likely never come back to Ubuntu), while many others like them are not
hard to find on IRC or elsewhere. So, this has to be counter-productive
with Canonical's goals to continue to build their community (and raise
more money).

If Canonical needs money that badly, why do they not advertise their
merchandise section better? They have nice t-shirts, pens, and the
like, which I have bought in the past. This would provide not only
money but also much needed word-of-mouth brand advertising by the people
who use Ubuntu.

The current opt-out policy has the scent of Microsoft. So, I laughed in
mild agreement when Mark Shuttleworth won the Big Brother Award
(http://news.slashdot.org/story/13/10/28/2210220/) and also when RMS
called Ubuntu "Spyware".

Please Canonical, I do not mind having the capability of my Dash to
search online sources, but please ask your users first!

submitted crash reports suggest otherwise. It is a racy bug, and thus

Also note that this master bug, and many duplicates have been reported
during precise development cycle _before_ it was released.

The only change required over debian, is relaxing the gnome-desktop3

[Bug 915626] Re: usb-creator-gtk crashed with SIGSEGV in _dbus_watch_invalidate

2013-12-17 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello stu, or anyone else affected,

Accepted usb-creator into raring-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usb-
creator/0.2.47.2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 1261452] Re: juju-core is unavailable for arm64

2013-12-17 Thread John A Meinel
So I tried this patch:
=== modified file 'testing/mgo.go'
--- testing/mgo.go  2013-11-06 13:38:01 +
+++ testing/mgo.go  2013-12-18 06:23:25 +

"--noprealloc",
"--smallfiles",
"--nojournal",
+   "--noscripting",
"--nounixsocket",
}
server := exec.Command("mongod", mgoargs...)

And with it, the test suite still passes 100% for me.

I did try connecting to one of the mongodb instances running during the test
suite and run:
> db.eval("hello")
Wed Dec 18 11:06:31 uncaught exception: { "errmsg" : "db side execution is
disabled", "ok" : 0 }

I even tried:
> var map = function() { emit ( this._id, this.format) }
> var reduce = function(key, values) {return Array.sum(values)}
> db.charms.mapReduce(map, reduce, {out: "format"})
Wed Dec 18 11:13:09 uncaught exception: map reduce failed:{
"errmsg" : "exception: cannot run map reduce without the js engine",
"code" : 16149,
"ok" : 0
}

So I have a strong feeling that --noscripting does what we want it to,
and that we don't, indeed, need the ability.

I'm not sure what test Michael had seen that used something that needed
scripting, but I'm running against mongodb 2.2.4 and it seems to be
working with --noscripting set up.

That depends on what's causing your disk to not be cleanly remounted
read-only on shutdown. Do you get any error messages on shutdown if booted
without 'splash'?

[Bug 1262068] [NEW] nvidia-prime should support gdm also

2013-12-17 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu GNOME we ship gdm by default, however nvidia-prime depends on
lightdm. This means that

1. Anyone installing nvidia binary drivers will pull in nvidia-prime and
subsequently lightdm. As a consequence of this they are also going to get the
potentially confusing dconf pop-up asking them to choose a DM.
2. nvidia-prime probably won't work when using gdm

I haven't looked to closely at how deeply integrated this is with
lightdm, however we particularly don't want #1 happening, and it would
be nice if #2 worked.

[Bug 1250605] Re: Realtek Card Reader Device 5286 (PCI 03:00.0)

2013-12-17 Thread exzemat
Yes, but see the last comment (18) : Michael Tokarev
"Oh. My device is indeed different: RTS5209 vs 5289.

Please retitle the bug. rtsx_pci does work - with rts5209 for sure. It
apparently has issues with 5289 (drivers/mfd/rtl8411.c)."

and the precedent driver (rts_bpp) was common to 5286 and 5289.

[Bug 1258919] Re: 067b:2305 printing issue with parallel-to-usb adapter

2013-12-17 Thread boblinux
I understand why you ask - on
http://global.shuttle.com/products/productsDownload?productId=1718&panelId=1,
they don't mention that v1.04 fixes anything about USB; as I am able to print
with usblp, I am not sure that upgrading the Bios will help - however, one
never knows - I will do the upgrade this week-end, no time before.
Thanks for your time.

Re: [Bug 1257857] Re: cgroup-lite fails to install in container in precise

2013-12-17 Thread Serge Hallyn
Hi,

this actually didn't seem to fix it for me. Sorry, I need to dig a
bit deeper and ask some questions.

In particular, the new version, after package installation, handles
'start/stop' the way I'd expect. But the package install itself appears
to be failing when the upstart job tries to start and does {stop; exit 0}

I'll look at this more tomorrow and see if I made a mistake in my
testing.

Re: [Bug 1221790] Re: Screen brightness is maximum upon fresh boot

2013-12-17 Thread Anmar Oueja
I did upgrade the BIOS a few weeks ago when I was running 13.10.
Unfortunately, this didn't change anything. I am now running 14.04
with the latest apt-get and the results are the same.

> What happened?

Upon cold boot or restart, the screen brightness is set to maximum
even if my setting wasn't.

> Output of the command "sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo
dmidecode -s bios-release-date"

G6ET99WW (2.59 )
11/19/2013

One thing I noticed is that when the machine boots and the "lenovo"
logo is displayed, the screen brightness is set to maximum, which
leads to believe that UEFI runtime services may not be setting the
brightness variable properly so it isn't persistent.

[Bug 1256874] Re: warning colour needed when the entire disk will be used

2013-12-17 Thread Fred Palmer
The issue is not just the 4 primary partitions in use with MBR. We are
seeing the the forums many users over writing UEFI Windows with gpt
partitioning. Again not sure if just user error or why it is occurring
but it is a lot more than one or two accidentally picking wrong choice.

Several have chosen LVM as it says 'easier' partitioning and it seems to
overwrite entire drive without any warnings at all. Same with encrypted
LVM.

Several have installed with dual boot Windows, had major issues with
Ubuntu, so they elected to reinstall. Menu said overwrite existing
Ubuntu install, but erased entire drive, including Windows & recovery
partitions.

[Bug 1221790] Re: Screen brightness is maximum upon fresh boot

2013-12-17 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Anmar Oueja, as per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update is
available for your BIOS (2.59). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and just provide the
output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1229269] Re: Brightness - not saved

2013-12-17 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Darek, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily
folder, but the one at the top) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.
