[Bug 1083996] Re: Most likely Graphics Error, reopening lid error.

2014-01-08 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Chew Jian Yue, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1265544] Re: 8086:0a16 [UX302LG] black screen on boot 3.12.0-7

2014-01-08 Thread Alberto Aguirre
I have an ASUS UX302LA which is essentially the same as the UX302LG
except without the NVIDIA gpu that exhibits the same issue - blank
screen on boot.

I cherry-picked the commit dff392dbd258381a6c3164f38420593f2d291e3b
(same patch as c26fe8e5eb34c18aa9ab60fcf4c3150663a52306) from ~danvet
/drm-intel (see http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~danvet/drm-
intel/commit/?id=dff392dbd258381a6c3164f38420593f2d291e3b ) on top of
tag Ubuntu-3.13.0-1.16 in git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-
trusty.git

and rebuilt the i915 kernel module - which fixes the blank screen issue
at boot; the issue of blank screen after resuming from sleep is indeed
still there after this patch.

[Bug 996168] Re: 10de:032c nouveau doesn't render items on lower third of desktop

2014-01-08 Thread thom
Christopher, I installed the last developement release of Ubuntu (14.04)
and it stalls after graphical login, leaving a blank screen so I only
could try to fix stuff from the commandline.

I managed to get the apport report via commandline. I have my fingers
crossed that the apport report did came through.

After that I did some tinkering and generated an Xorg.conf (Xorg -configure)
and it mistakenly reported 4 videocards. After deleting the superfluous
entries I could start the Graphical desktop but it is extremely slow (it takes
several minutes to open a terminal which immediately locked up for several
minutes) so it was quite difficult to test if the bug was still present.
At the moment the computer is working very very hard for several minutes now,
trying to maximize a window. :-)
htop reports 100% CPU usage.
I guess that the whopping amount of 64MB VideoRAM is not really adequate for
14.04

I did manage to move a terminalwindow, however, just before it locked
up. :-)

The reported bug seems indeed to be SOLVED in 14.04, thanks :-)

The downside is, of course, that 14.04 is not usable in it's present state on
this rig.
I could do some further testing. I persume it would be more adequate to use
Lubuntu then ?

2014-01-08 Thread Sergio Gelato
* Sebastien Bacher [2014-01-08 16:57:52 -]:

I cen try and construct one that reproduces the issue on my system, but
there is no guarantee that the same choice of font will reproduce the
problem somewhere else: that depends on the history of the individual
system (specifically, on whether the pk files for the font in question
have already been generated and cached).

> That would make easier to reproduce/debug the issue

With texlive-fonts-extra installed, try the following. If you happen to have
used font t2c-iwonami in the past, try with a different font. Note the
"Permission denied" errors when running evince, and the decision to
substitute a (very) different font for the one that was requested.

$ tex testfont
This is TeX, Version 3.1415926 (TeX Live 2009/Debian)
(/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/plain/base/testfont.tex

Name of the font to test = t2c-iwonami
Now type a test command (\help for help):)
*\table

*\bye

Output written on testfont.dvi (1 page, 9320 bytes).
Transcript written on testfont.log.
$ evince testfont.dvi

The problem goes away if one runs the command that was saved in ~/missfont.log
and runs evince again on the same .dvi file.

[Bug 1077638] Re: nouveau drives lcd screens at non-standard sync

2014-01-08 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
D Baker, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1246098] Re: MIR: pollinate

2014-01-08 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed pollen version 3.6-0ubuntu1 as checked into trusty. This
shouldn't be considered a full security audit, nor an audit of the design,
but rather a quick gauge of code quality.

- pollinate provides an entropy server and client, designed to combat
low-entropy on systems after early install
- The client runs at boot and periodically via cron
- The server runs at boot
- Build-depends upon autotools and friends
- Server depends upon golang-go compiler, the pollen server is recompiled
  every time it is started
- Server recommends haveged, pollinate, ent
- Client depends upon run-one and curl
- Client suggests pollen-server and ent
- Uses Go's HTTPS libraries, server runs a self-contained web server
- Server:
  - listens on configurable ports for TLS and non-TLS
  - runs as user root
  - Does not daemonize, expects to be managed with upstart or similar
- Client:
  - Runs a script at boot and via cron to connect to servers using curl
and store results into /dev/urandom
  - runs as user root during boot
  - runs as user daemon during cronjobs
- Postinst scripts look broken, details below
- Initscripts start server and client at boot
- No dbus services
- No setuid executables
- 'pollen' and 'pollinate' binaries installed into /usr/bin
- No sudo fragments
- No udev rules
- No test suite
- Client supplies a cron file:
  - Runs randomly selected number of times per day, from 1440 to 24, to
periodically reseed the client's entropy pool; slight bug.
  - Should not be needed
  - May present privacy intrusions beyond what would be welcomed by the
user community
- Build logs are clean -- compiles happen at run time

- No subprocesses are spawned from the server; the client is a shell
script, so spawns dozens, but the code looked clean
- No real memory management; the server's http handler is quite small and
  allocates only stack memory
- Files are written to -- /dev/urandom in both client and server; the
server postinst creates a key and a certificate in /etc/pollen; the
client postinst creates a unique machine identifier in
  /var/lib/pollinate/tag
- Server-side logging stores the supplied User-Agent string verbatim
without stripping or encoding newline and ] characters, which could
  complicate log analysis
- No environment variables are used
- No privileged operations as used
- Encryption use is encapsulated in golang HTTPS support and curl
- Certificate validation is left up to curl
- There is no management of privileges
- All temporary files explicitly managed by the programs are handled
  safely
- No WebKit
- No PolicyKit

The code quality of pollen and pollinate is high; maintenance should be
straightforward.

There are a few small issues I'm reporting here because I know Dustin is
eager for feedback and wants to address everything he can:

- is dh_installinit functioning correctly? both pollinate and pollen
postinst have sections like the following:

  [...]
  # Automatically added by dh_installinit
  if [ -x "/etc/init.d/pollen" ] || [ -e "/etc/init/pollen.conf" ]; then
if [ ! -e "/etc/init/pollen.conf" ]; then
update-rc.d pollen defaults >/dev/null
fi
invoke-rc.d pollen start || exit $?
  fi
  # End automatically added section
  # Automatically added by dh_installinit
  update-rc.d -f pollen remove >/dev/null || exit $?
  # End automatically added section

- pollinate shell script, the order of -c and -i arguments matter -- give
them in the wrong order and the arguments are lost

- pollinate shell script, IPV6 variable unused

- pollen.postinst generates a certificate with
emailAddress=no...@example.com, it'd be nice if it said pollen instead.

- pollinate cronjob runs every "random number of minutes" due to
*/__RAND__ use. Even */0 can be generated, this probably runs every
minute. Or kills cron. :) But */2 or */3 would probably generate
way too much load on our servers.

- pollen uses os.Create() to open the /dev/urandom may create a regular
file if /dev/urandom doesn't exist for whatever reason -- it'd be worth
checking the opened file to ensure it isn't a regular file. Either a
check for specific major/minors of character devices or just a check for
"not a regular file" would work; the first would be least surprising,
the second may allow something clever.

There's also a handful of larger issues that need to be addressed. First,
for the server, pollen; while it isn't included in the MIR request, at
least one instance will be run by Canonical IT staff, so its security is
important to the security of our corporate network:

#1 The server is recompiled before running, every time it is started.
This means "apt-get install pollen" on a fresh Trusty development desktop
system downloads 25 megabytes of packages and unpacks to 172 megabytes of
disk space. This also means the server runs from a temporary file located
in the /tmp filesystem, which prevents /tmp from being mounted no-exec.

[Bug 1098334]

2014-01-08 Thread Zdenek Kabelac
I think nice illustration could be - that while before with MAX 9 it
seemed like i.e. gnome-terminal running top was not really rendering
broken characters - it now seems to show a lot of messed characters.

On the other hand - MAX 1 seems to be now more fluent then before - so
except for some dramatic drops in performance in benchmark tools like
'x11perf -aa10text' it seems to be quite usable.

Interestingly this commit has increased the number of buggy character
occurrence - although I admit I'm overriding MAX_FLUSH_VERTICES to 9 (since I
don't like the slowness with 1) so I've been rather living with faster desktop
and occasional wrong characters on the screen - but with this commit it seems
to appearance of visual problem increased to the level which makes noticeable
reading difficulties that probably enforce me to switch to very slow '1' for
MAX :(...

(I'm not sure if it's the direct cause - since I've been using before
about 3 week old version of git tree)

[Bug 831305]

2014-01-08 Thread Björn Michaelsen
Created attachment 91509
rough patch/codepointer

attached patch should give a rough starting point on this. The patch
moves the default tabstop one inch to the right, which is obviously too
much. Should be enough of a starting point though.

[Bug 1072399] Re: Desktop frozen

2014-01-08 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Andras Kovacs, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1266413] Re: messages seen when using vi or vim

2014-01-08 Thread Deepak C Shetty
I was able to reproduce the problem by going to the .viminfo file and
deliberately removing '>' from one of the cmds listed after
the line "# History of marks within files (newest to oldest):" in .viminfo

Adding it back... the issue is not seen.

So it definitely looks like somehow the '>' went missing in the .viminfo
in your case.

I also went ahead, removed vim, manually rm -f .viminfo, re-installed
vim and used vim and noticed that the .viminfo created afresh works fine
w/o exhibiting the issue reported here.

I am on Power8 Host running ubuntu alpha cloudimage in guest.

thanx,
deepak

[Bug 1062958] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in __mpn_lshift ()

2014-01-08 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Étienne Beaulé, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

[Bug 1216228] Re: xrandr reports slightly different (less accurate) output dimensions under XMir

2014-01-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It seems both answers are correct, depending on where you look:

$ edid-decode /sys/class/drm/card0-HDMI-A-1/edid
...
Maximum image size: 52 cm x 33 cm
...
Detailed mode: Clock 154.000 MHz, 519 mm x 324 mm

Though I suggest we should be using the latter.

[Bug 1153012] Re: gucharmap hangs on startup

2014-01-08 Thread quequotion
Same problem.

Unfortunately, no output from gucharmap whatsoever.

Interestingly, starting with --font='somefont somesize' displays the
chosen font and size, but still opens to a frozen window.

It may just be a coincidence, but running charmap again (without a font
selection) produced a usable window!

[Bug 1048005] Re: 1024x768 and 800x600 only with GF119 (Quatro NVS 4200M)

2014-01-08 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
shawnlandden, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1264609] Re: No AC3 paththrough with hda intel ALC887-VD Saucy

2014-01-08 Thread Daniel Schürmann
Ok , I will test it tonight.

Yesterday was facing an issue with totem and PCM playback:
With: 'IEC958 Default PCM' = 0.
* play a track in totem via pulseaudio
* switch to an other track (while the first is still playing)
* I can hear a spit of a second of the new track, but then transport stops.

This issue is gone after changing back to 'IEC958 Default PCM' = 1.

nakul, ok. Feel free to use at a terminal:
wget -c http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/trusty-desktop-amd64.iso

so that in case it gets disconnected, it will resume the download where
it left off, instead of forcing you to start from the beginning.

** Description changed:

When I upgraded to linux-firmware 1.116.1 from proposed
The sleep with lid close, the screen only goes black, and computer stays on
with fans on etc.. so something gets stuck. Going into Power settings doesn't
do any difference.

But when I revert back to older linux-firmware 1.116 lid trigger and
  sleep works correctly.

I'm on an Samsung Ativ 9 Plus with Intel Wireless 7260
Checking the changelog for this package, there's a firmware for 7260. so it's
somehow blocking sleeps.

[Bug 1021924]

2014-01-08 Thread Rodney Dawes
Now running 3.13.0-1 on Ubuntu, and second display still not working,
and no link train errors in dmesg.

Second screen remains black. I can use both screens only when I set them
to an extremely low resolution of 1280x800 each. Any higher resolution,
and the second screen remains black.

If I run "xrandr --output HDMI3 --crtc 2" the second screen displays the
mirrored copy of the first screen, but I don't seem to be able to
disable mirroring with that. Disabling mirroring results in the second
screen returning to black.

[Bug 1021924]

2014-01-08 Thread Rodney Dawes
After getting the second monitor working properly with xrandr faffing,
the settings do not stick after a reboot, unfortunately.

How can I get it to work correctly by default, every time?

[Bug 1035507] Re: xorg cannot find graphics card; also does not default to low graphics mode

2014-01-08 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Terabyte, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1236012]

2014-01-08 Thread Atigmail-bugzilla
The problem is still present in LibreOffice 4.1.4.2 from Debian Wheezy
Backports. So do we have to wait for 4.2 to get the fix?

Also, as stated earlier in the list - I can do a CTRL-ALT-F2 and sign in as the
user and kill the processes which in turn unlocks the UI.

[Bug 1021924]

2014-01-08 Thread Rodney Dawes
Playing with xrandr some more, I have gotten "xrandr --output HDMI1
--crtc 0 --output HDMI3 --crtc 2 --right-of HDMI1" to work. I can use
both screens at full resolution, with this command. I don't know if it
will stick after a reboot, but I will comment here as soon as I do
reboot.

Please never update the top section unless asked to be a contributor -
we have our policies/processes and when users change things it just
confuses things. This bug is fixed, you'll see it in 4.2.
