[Bug 1295526] [NEW] "disable touchpad while typing" doesn't work
Public bug reported: "Disable touchpad while typing" checkbox in System Settings does not work on my Asus F5N laptop. The button to disable touchpad does not work as well. As a workaround I use "syndaemon -i 1 -K -d" command as per Ubuntu help page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticsTouchpad/ but it does not fix the issue with the said chechbox and hardware button. yet another observation: yesterday i run all day with the standard 3.11 kernel with all 16GB RAM. At the end of the day i also got in the state where apt-get update took minutes (tens of them). Interestingly, also, the vm.cache_drop trick did not seem to have any speed-up effect on it. Also note that io-activity accoding to iostat was 100% even though it was so ridiculously slow (and no other noticable activity, e.g., according to iotop). Having finally found an (ugly way) to get nvidia working again i run 3.14 again since yesterday evening. And i do see now the apt-get update anomaly (9 minutes for package read) also on 13.14. During that time according iostat the avgrq-size seemed also to be below 10; avgqu-size fluctuated between 5 and 20 and utilization 20-60%. doing dd measurements as above also was slow (<15MB/s) and this time vm.cache_drop trick did not have any positive impact here, contrary to the experiment reported earlier where a /sbin/sysctl -w vm.drop_caches=2 sped it up to a "normal" 90MB/s. I reviewed cgmanager version 0.20-0ubuntu3 as checked into trusty. This should not be considered a full security audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability. cgmanager provides a userspace manager for cgroups; the Linux kernel provides cgroups as a resource management interface and access control mechanism but does not provide any mechanism for nesting cgroup users. cgmanager provides both a proxy and a controller, allowing nested users to request cgroup limits within the extents of their own limits. The cgmanager code is very defensive. Error returns are checked and thoughtful error messages are provided for nearly every exceptional event. The code is highly repetitive, so it would be possible for a potential problem to be duplicated many times throughout the codebase; if we need to perform maintenance tasks in the future we'll need to be careful to look for other occurrences of the hypothesized fault. (This is common to many programs that use Dbus, so it's not unexpected.) Security team ACK for promoting cgmanager to main. Hi Joseph, I had already reverted to 3.13... ... so I tried again. I just did: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get dist-upgrade ... then got the 3.14 kernel again. I'm now able to suspend and resume without a kernel oops. I'm not sure where this leaves the bug, but it appears to be working OK now. Let me know if I need to change the status. Nautilus has been slow for 13 years. If Linux file browser speed can't improve with Moore's law then it is time to drop the fancy mime based "open every file and read its header" feature in my opinion. People should not be waiting 500ms for their file browser to display 10 files in 2014, all for the sake of random text files that don't have an extension and should probably be opened with a text editor anyway. In my opinion the Nautilus UI has degraded over time, and has never met the usability standards introduced by windows explorer 95/98 (not that Windows has kept them). It seems like the trend in application/OS user interface development has gone towards zero-customisability; attempting to make one UI fit the needs of both first time and power user, an impossible task.
