[Bug 1301809] Re: Report boot images no directory traceback

2014-04-03 Thread Adam Collard
After I asked the cluster controller to import boot images, the
directory was created and report_boot_images tasks are now reported as
successful.

Perhaps this is a packaging bug to create that directory upfront? Not
sure whose responsibility it is, but marking as affecting Ubuntu MAAS
too.

[Bug 1301809] Re: Report boot images no directory traceback

2014-04-03 Thread Raphaël Badin
Well, it's the reporting task that broke because of the absence of
'/var/lib/maas/boot-resources/current/'. The easiest way to fix this is
to change the reporting task so that it copes with that.

[Bug 1301880] [NEW] whois contains mkpasswd but is not suggested when the command is typed and not installed

2014-04-03 Thread Peter Maloney
Public bug reported:

I don't really care which package it is in, but you should probably make
the package suggestions include it.

# mkpasswd
or
# /usr/lib/command-not-found mkpasswd
No command 'mkpasswd' found, did you mean:
 Command 'kpasswd' from package 'heimdal-clients' (universe)
 Command 'kpasswd' from package 'krb5-user' (universe)
 Command 'kpasswd' from package 'openafs-kpasswd' (universe)
 Command 'tkpasswd' from package 'expect-dev' (main)
mkpasswd: command not found

Related to bug 284416 but I don't want to reopen that one. I am not suggesting
splitting the package.

on openSUSE, the equivalent works fine:

# mkpasswd
If 'mkpasswd' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package
that contains it, like this:
cnf mkpasswd
# cnf mkpasswd

The program 'mkpasswd' can be found in following packages:
  * whois [ path: /usr/bin/mkpasswd, repository: zypp (openSUSE:Stable_OSS) ]
  * whois [ path: /usr/bin/mkpasswd, repository: zypp (repo-oss) ]

Try installing with:
zypper install whois

[Bug 1298611] Re: [FFe] apparmor signal and ptrace mediation

2014-04-03 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Here is a debdiff for lxc. It is tested on trusty. To ease backporting,
I updated debian/rules for strip out the signal and ptrace rules for
Ubuntu releases earlier than 14.04 (using the same method as for
stripping out dbus for earlier than 13.10), but could not test earlier
releases because libcgmanager-dev does not exist on them.

Before upgrading lxc, there were many ptrace and signal denials when
using containers. After upgrading, creating, starting, using, stopping,
destroying all works fine with no denials.

[Bug 1298611] Re: [FFe] apparmor signal and ptrace mediation

2014-04-03 Thread Jamie Strandboge
** Description changed:

  Background: kernel and apparmor userspace updates to support signal and
  ptrace mediation. These packages are listed in one bug because they are
  related, but the FFes may be granted and the uploads may happen at
  different times.

  = linux =
  Summary:
  This feature freeze exception is requested for signal and ptrace mediation
via apparmor in the kernel. When used with a compatible apparmor userspace,
signals and ptrace rules are supported. When used without a compatible apparmor
userspace (eg, on a precise system with a trusty backport kernel), signal and
ptrace mediation is not enforced (ie, you can use this kernel with an old
userspace without any issues).

  The fine grained mediation of signals and ptraces also incorporates improved
  versioning support that allows this kernel to better support older and newer
  userspaces. This allows for this version of the kernel to work as a backport
  kernel unmodified (currently a patch and config are used to provide backport
  kernels).

  The kernel patch is available at git://kernel.ubuntu.com/jj/ubuntu-trusty.git
  in the trusty-alpha6 branch apparmor-alpha6-sync

  Testing:
  * 12.04 system with backported kernel: DONE
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS
   * lxc: PASS (containers can be created, started, shutdown)
   * libvirt: PASS (VMs started via openstack, and test-libvirt.py from QRT
passes all tests)
  * 14.04 system (non-Touch) with current apparmor userspace: DONE (relevant
parts of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor)
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS
   * lxc: PASS (containers can be created, started, shutdown)
   * libvirt: PASS (QRT/script/test-libvirt.py (though there are 3 failures
unrelated to apparmor))
   * click-apparmor QRT touch image tests: PASS
   * apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu QRT touch image tests: PASS
  * 14.04 system (non-Touch) with updated apparmor userspace capable of
supporting signal and ptrace mediation: DONE (relevant parts of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor. Note: this is marked
'done' from the kernel perspective-- the apparmor userspace upload is being
prepared and tests assume userspace is using latest patches on the list)
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS
   * lxc: PASS (containers can be created, started, shutdown)
   * libvirt: PASS (QRT/script/test-libvirt.py (though there are 3 failures
unrelated to apparmor))
   * click-apparmor QRT touch image tests: PASS
   * apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu QRT touch image tests: PASS

  Justification:
  This feature is required to support comprehensive application confinement on
Ubuntu Touch. This feature adds a significant security benefit to libvirt's
qemu guest isolation which is fundamental to Ubuntu on Server/Cloud. This
feature also adds a welcome improvement to administrators wishing to further
protect their systems.

  = apparmor userspace =
  Summary:
  This feature freeze exception is requested for signal and ptrace mediation
for apparmor userspace. When used with a compatible kernel, signals and ptrace
rules are supported. When used without a compatible kernel (eg, on Ubuntu Touch
for a few weeks or with upstream kernels), signal and ptrace rules are skipped
(ie, you can use this userspace with other kernels without issue).

[Bug 1298611] Re: [FFe] apparmor signal and ptrace mediation

2014-04-03 Thread Stéphane Graber
The LXC change looks good, it's in line with what I was planning to push
upstream. Feel free to upload that directly to the archive and I'll do a
similar upstream change right around the same time so our PPA users
don't break, then shortly after that will tag 1.0.3 and get that into
trusty so we can drop the patch.

[Bug 1298611] Re: [FFe] apparmor signal and ptrace mediation

2014-04-03 Thread Jamie Strandboge
** Description changed:

  Background: kernel and apparmor userspace updates to support signal and
  ptrace mediation. These packages are listed in one bug because they are
  related, but the FFes may be granted and the uploads may happen at
  different times.

  = linux =
  Summary:
  This feature freeze exception is requested for signal and ptrace mediation
via apparmor in the kernel. When used with a compatible apparmor userspace,
signals and ptrace rules are supported. When used without a compatible apparmor
userspace (eg, on a precise system with a trusty backport kernel), signal and
ptrace mediation is not enforced (ie, you can use this kernel with an old
userspace without any issues).

  The fine grained mediation of signals and ptraces also incorporates improved
  versioning support that allows this kernel to better support older and newer
  userspaces. This allows for this version of the kernel to work as a backport
  kernel unmodified (currently a patch and config are used to provide backport
  kernels).

  The kernel patch is available at git://kernel.ubuntu.com/jj/ubuntu-trusty.git
  in the trusty-alpha6 branch apparmor-alpha6-sync

  Testing:
  * 12.04 system with backported kernel: DONE
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS
   * lxc: PASS (containers can be created, started, shutdown)
   * libvirt: PASS (VMs started via openstack, and test-libvirt.py from QRT
passes all tests)
  * 14.04 system (non-Touch) with current apparmor userspace: DONE (relevant
parts of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor)
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS
   * lxc: PASS (containers can be created, started, shutdown)
   * libvirt: PASS (QRT/script/test-libvirt.py (though there are 3 failures
unrelated to apparmor))
   * click-apparmor QRT touch image tests: PASS
   * apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu QRT touch image tests: PASS
  * 14.04 system (non-Touch) with updated apparmor userspace capable of
supporting signal and ptrace mediation: DONE (relevant parts of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor. Note: this is marked
'done' from the kernel perspective-- the apparmor userspace upload is being
prepared and tests assume userspace is using latest patches on the list)
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS

(ie, you can use this userspace with other kernels without issue).

ptrace mediation yet):
   * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor: INPROGRESS

[Bug 1301598] Re: Unable to create guest VM using virt-install

2014-04-03 Thread Namu
I'm confused by your comment.

Why do I need to --connect lxc:/// to connect to qemu driver?

Why do I not need this in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS?

I can run this command: virt-install --name nam --ram 4096 --disk
path=/var/lib/libvirt/images/nam.img,bus=virtio --import --noautoconsole
--network network:default,model=virtio in Ubuntu 12.04 and create a VM.

I don't get how this is related to LXC!

Per your comment, I did try the following -

root@srvr-931:~# virt-install --connect lxc:/// --name nam --ram 4096
--disk path=/var/lib/libvirt/images/nam.img,bus=virtio --noautoconsole
--network network:default,model=virtio --force

Starting install...
Creating domain...

  |0 B 00:00
Domain creation completed. You can restart your domain by running:
  virsh --connect lxc:/// start nam

root@srvr-931:~# virsh --connect lxc:/// start nam
error: Domain is already active

root@srvr-931:~# virsh list --all

Just a note for early adopters to beware of:
https://ceph.com/releases/v0-78-released/

Please note that while it is possible to create and test erasure coded
pools in this release, the pools will not be usable when you upgrade to
v0.79 as the OSDMap encoding will subtlely change. Please do not
populate your test pools with important data that can’t be reloaded.

[Bug 1298611] Re: [FFe] apparmor signal and ptrace mediation

2014-04-03 Thread Jamie Strandboge
** Description changed:

  Background: kernel and apparmor userspace updates to support signal and
  ptrace mediation. These packages are listed in one bug because they are
  related, but the FFes may be granted and the uploads may happen at
  different times.

  = linux =
  Summary:
  This feature freeze exception is requested for signal and ptrace mediation
via apparmor in the kernel. When used with a compatible apparmor userspace,
signals and ptrace rules are supported. When used without a compatible apparmor
userspace (eg, on a precise system with a trusty backport kernel), signal and
ptrace mediation is not enforced (ie, you can use this kernel with an old
userspace without any issues).

  The fine grained mediation of signals and ptraces also incorporates improved
  versioning support that allows this kernel to better support older and newer
  userspaces. This allows for this version of the kernel to work as a backport
  kernel unmodified (currently a patch and config are used to provide backport
  kernels).

  The kernel patch is available at git://kernel.ubuntu.com/jj/ubuntu-trusty.git
  in the trusty-alpha6 branch apparmor-alpha6-sync

  Testing:
  * 12.04 system with backported kernel: DONE
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS
   * lxc: PASS (containers can be created, started, shutdown)
   * libvirt: PASS (VMs started via openstack, and test-libvirt.py from QRT
passes all tests)
  * 14.04 system (non-Touch) with current apparmor userspace: DONE (relevant
parts of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor)
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS
   * lxc: PASS (containers can be created, started, shutdown)
   * libvirt: PASS (QRT/script/test-libvirt.py (though there are 3 failures
unrelated to apparmor))
   * click-apparmor QRT touch image tests: PASS
   * apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu QRT touch image tests: PASS
  * 14.04 system (non-Touch) with updated apparmor userspace capable of
supporting signal and ptrace mediation: DONE (relevant parts of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor. Note: this is marked
'done' from the kernel perspective-- the apparmor userspace upload is being
prepared and tests assume userspace is using latest patches on the list)
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS

unrelated to apparmor))
   * click-apparmor QRT touch image tests: PASS
   * apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu QRT touch image tests: PASS

  Justification:
  This feature is required to support comprehensive application confinement on
Ubuntu Touch. This feature adds a significant security benefit to libvirt's
qemu guest isolation which is fundamental to Ubuntu on Server/Cloud. This
feature also adds a welcome improvement to administrators wishing to further
protect their systems.

[Bug 1135780] Re: ntp apparmor denied read of /usr/share/samba/upcase.dat

2014-04-03 Thread Tyler Hicks
Hello - I sat down to fix this bug in Trusty, but it is already fixed.
Here's my reasoning:

* Starting in Trusty, /usr/share/samba/{low,up}case.dat was moved to
/usr/share/samba/codepages/{low,up}case.dat
* The ntpd profile has #include abstractions/nameservice
* The nameservice abstraction has #include abstractions/winbind
* Starting in Trusty, the winbind abstraction has
/usr/share/samba/codepages/{lowcase,upcase,valid}.dat r,

The denials should no longer be happening in Trusty so I'm going to mark
this as Fix Released. Thanks for the bug report!

[Bug 1235231] Re: plymouth loses output to /dev/console (such as ci-info: messages)

2014-04-03 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello Robie, or anyone else affected,

Accepted plymouth into trusty-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plymouth/0.8.8-0ubuntu16 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance!

  * Fix debian/patches/tty1-after-boot.patch: when we have multiple
non-default console options on the kernel commandline,
local_console_terminal will not be set, so we should avoid the resulting
assert.  LP: #1160079, LP: #1235231.

  [ Dimitri John Ledkov ] LP: #1292458
  * debian/patches/use-upstart-private-socket.patch: instead of using
system dbus, use private upstart socket in the plymouth-upstart-bridge.
  * debian/plymouth.plymouth-upstart-bridge.upstart: start
plymouth-upstart-bridge on startup, and thus gather a more complete
boot.log.
  * debian/patches/dont-bail-on-dummy-terms.patch: don't bail
plymouth-upstart-bridge if TERM is not set and/or running on a dummy
terminal, as we can run on those. This makes console-log useful in
lxc-containers and actually contain messages from upstart jobs
starting and stopping.
  * debian/patches/no-print-empty-description.patch: do not store
description when dbus returns empty string, and thus stop printing
empty Starting... done messages. LP: #1185560.
  * debian/plymouth.plymouth-upstart-bridge.upstart: update stop on
conditions to stop when plymouth-shutdown finishes.
  * Make ubuntu-logo theme support scale factor, provide one plymouth
theme with scale 1 and another with scale 2, until scale factor can be
dynamically detected.
  * Mark plymouth-upstart-bridge to respawn.

[Bug 1302286] [NEW] create superuser message in web interface is not very user friendly

2014-04-03 Thread Dustin Kirkland 
Public bug reported:

The welcome message you see, the first time you log into the MAAS web
interface is an ornery demand that you need to create an administrative
user.  This should have been handled by the MAAS packaging itself.  The
default username/password for most any router or network appliance these
days is admin/admin.  I'd recommend we do the same, and of course allow
for debconf/preseeding automated changes.  At the very least, the
username should be hardcoded to admin, and the password dropped into a
root-readable configuration file in /etc.  In any case, this is most
certainly *not* a user-friendly way of doing things.

[Bug 1302294] [NEW] Ubuntu 14.04.1 DVD images for MAAS

2014-04-03 Thread Dustin Kirkland 
Public bug reported:

I'm filing this bug here, as a place holder. I expect it'll need to get
linked or moved elsewhere.

For 14.04.1, it would be quite handy to build a larger image, perhaps a
DVD/USB sized Ubuntu Server image, with the additional bits that MAAS
needs to bootstrap nodes. At a bare minimum, include in the single
download the PXE/ISO images needed to boot a single architecture, as
well as a single architecture's fastpath installation image.

There certainly are people more knowledgeable than I about the most
efficient way to accomplish this.

The problem, as I see, from a user experience perspective, is that even
after you've installed MAAS, you might be an hour or more away from
actually being able to do anything with it, while you download a bunch
of extra images.

It would be quite convenient to bundle all of this up into a single ~2GB
download. This would be particularly handy when one need to deploy and
use MAAS in an environment that does not have internet connectivity, if
you could get everything you need on a single USB stick.

I am not convinced that a default password is useful; in fact it is a
security risk.

I would have the packaging ask the user in a debconf question, as per
the other bug, and if not supplied fall back to the page that we have
now.

   Status: In Progress = Fix Committed

** Description changed:

  Background: kernel and apparmor userspace updates to support signal and
  ptrace mediation. These packages are listed in one bug because they are
  related, but the FFes may be granted and the uploads may happen at
  different times.

  = linux =
  Summary:
  This feature freeze exception is requested for signal and ptrace mediation
via apparmor in the kernel. When used with a compatible apparmor userspace,
signals and ptrace rules are supported. When used without a compatible apparmor
userspace (eg, on a precise system with a trusty backport kernel), signal and
ptrace mediation is not enforced (ie, you can use this kernel with an old
userspace without any issues).

  The fine grained mediation of signals and ptraces also incorporates improved
  versioning support that allows this kernel to better support older and newer
  userspaces. This allows for this version of the kernel to work as a backport
  kernel unmodified (currently a patch and config are used to provide backport
  kernels).

  The kernel patch is available at git://kernel.ubuntu.com/jj/ubuntu-trusty.git
  in the trusty-alpha6 branch apparmor-alpha6-sync

  Testing:
  * 12.04 system with backported kernel: DONE
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS
   * lxc: PASS (containers can be created, started, shutdown)
   * libvirt: PASS (VMs started via openstack, and test-libvirt.py from QRT
passes all tests)
  * 14.04 system (non-Touch) with current apparmor userspace: DONE (relevant
parts of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor)
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS
   * lxc: PASS (containers can be created, started, shutdown)
   * libvirt: PASS (QRT/script/test-libvirt.py (though there are 3 failures
unrelated to apparmor))
   * click-apparmor QRT touch image tests: PASS
   * apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu QRT touch image tests: PASS
  * 14.04 system (non-Touch) with updated apparmor userspace capable of
supporting signal and ptrace mediation: DONE (relevant parts of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor. Note: this is marked
'done' from the kernel perspective-- the apparmor userspace upload is being
prepared and tests assume userspace is using latest patches on the list)
   * test-apparmor.py: PASS (runs extensive tests (upstream and distro))
   * exploratory manual testing: PASS (networking, aa-enforce with firefox,
firefox works, apparmor blocks access, etc)
   * aa-status: PASS

  Testing:
  * 14.04 system with current kernel (Touch, kernel doesn't have signal and
ptrace mediation yet):
   * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor: PASS (includes
click-apparmor, apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu, exploratory manual testing, etc)
  * 14.04 system with previous kernel lacking signal and ptrace mediation
(non-Touch):
   * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor: PASS
(exploratory manual testing, lxc, libvirt (3 failures unrelated to apparmor),
etc)
-  * test-apparmor.py: INPROGRESS
+  * test-apparmor.py: PASS
   * lightdm guest session: PASS (login, start browser, logout)
  * 14.04 system kernel capable of supporting signal and ptrace mediation
(non-Touch):

[Bug 1298611] Re: [FFe] apparmor signal and ptrace mediation

2014-04-03 Thread Jamie Strandboge
FYI, retested all the packages in the PPA on desktop/server for TestPlan
with and without the kernel that supports signal/ptrace mediation and
everything passes (barring expected test-libvirt.py errors unrelated to
apparmor).

[Bug 1301756] [NEW] Connected 2nd display, bugged out

2014-04-03 Thread ThomasNovin
Public bug reported:

Connected a 2nd display to my Lenovo laptop. The connection was done via
the DisplayPort. The 2nd display just showed the lock screen and I
wasn't able to use it (could not move the mouse, enter password etc.).
On the same time, the built-in display continued to work.

Tried make 2nd display as primary via System Settings Displays but the
settings applet just hung, got gray.

Found this in syslog:

[Bug 1258837] Re: [Dell Latitude E7440] ALPS touchpad keeps having state reset

2014-04-03 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Christopher, I would, but I have a hard time understanding why I should
file an obvious duplicate bug report ? I have the same hardware as the
reporter and the same errors. Also, the A08 BIOS is not outdated – there
is nothing more recent available from Dell support.
