[Bug 1311247] Re: [Grubenv] error: malformed file, press any key to continue

2014-07-18 Thread dino99
An other error getting from time to time, way before the starting grub
process, is:

"xz compression data is corrupted" , and need to reboot in that case.
Wonder if a possible relationship can exist between these two errors.

[Bug 1343911] Re: gdm-session-worker crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message()

2014-07-18 Thread dino99
@Harry

yes it is the same side effect due to systemd/cgmanager. This report is already
a follow up of a previous fixed one (lp:1342586) and here is against gdm (which
yours are not).
As Serge have started to study that issue from your report, i will test his ppa
package. And maybe we will grab a less older systemd package that time (i'm
surprised ubuntu is not picking the systemd upstream, which have made huge
improvements & fixes).

That's said, i let this report not linked with yours.

[Bug 1275416] Re: touchscreen do not work after suspend/resume

2014-07-18 Thread ADRIANO MARCELINO SALGADO
Cheers mates!

I've found a workaround for this REALLY odd ubuntu issue.

Assuming you all have ELAN touchscreen devices, like mine, it represents
an usb device.

It seems that the ubuntu driver that controls the touchscreen has a bug,
altough it could work natively as another xinput device.

So, I blacklisted the "usbtouchscreen" on modprobe, using the command:
"echo "blacklist usbtouchscreen" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf"
(without quotes, of course)

or just blacklist it using nano, as you prefer... :-)

Reboot the thing and... voilà!

Touchscreen works every time, no matter how many resume/suspend events
you inflict to the beast.

It's working just fine for me. So, guys, tell if it solves for you too!

Have fun!

[Bug 1340604] Re: [phone] crash files are only uploaded on boot

2014-07-18 Thread Paul Larson
Yeah, I seem to be getting stuck at
system_bus = g_bus_get_sync (G_BUS_TYPE_SYSTEM, NULL, &err);
if (err) {
log_msg ("Could not connect to the system bus: %s\n", err->message);
g_error_free (err);
return FALSE;
}
I was thinking about retrying it just that part, but it may be safer to retry
the whole thing. I'd like to get feedback from Evan or Brian since they are
more familiar with this code about whether there's a better way to go about
this.

[Bug 1343543] Re: [Dell XPS 15 L502X] X stops responding to input after entering idle power saving (screen off)

2014-07-18 Thread Adam Skillen
I reverted the offending commit in the v3.16-rc5 branch and it seems to
fix the problem.

Specifically, in the file drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_dp.c
near line 1902, under function :
static void intel_disable_dp(struct intel_encoder *encoder)

I changed line 1912 from:
intel_dp_sink_dpms(intel_dp, DRM_MODE_DPMS_OFF);
to:
intel_dp_sink_dpms(intel_dp, DRM_MODE_DPMS_ON);

And that seems to fix the problem.

How do I proceed from here?

[Bug 1218995] Re: Hyper-V Synthetic Video Frame Buffer Driver not working

2014-07-18 Thread Brad
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1199345 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1199345

Hmm, not sure if this is still an active issue...

but I could finally get it to work by adding the kernel option
video=hyperv_fb:1920x1080as suggested by codrutoctavian here;
http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/494938-change-suse-resolution-
when-running-in-Hyper-v

For those less familiar with grub (like me)
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters explains how to add
kernel options.

Frustratingly, even after I reduced my windows resolution back to
1920x1080, the Hyper-v manager still rescaled the vm output to the
original ratio! (this REALLY annoying bc hyper-v can obviously scale
video output and if they scaled up the lower resolution, it would
overcome the postage stamp size vm screen). Anyway, restarting windows
with 1920x1080 resolution did the trick, with full screen 1920x1080
ubuntu 14.04 running under windows.

[Bug 1283826] Re: lightdm hangs after updates

2014-07-18 Thread Jake McGregor
Well whatever it is, I know ssh logins are still possible. If available
I can login from another machine via ssh and reboot from there. Nothing
seems to be locked up from that end, so I know it's not the core system.
It also seems to be every other reboot too, if that matters.

2014-07-18 Thread Xu Weihong
I am experiencing exactly the same problem, the desktop freeze after
click login and the keyboard does not response. I think systmed is the
most probable cause since I found this in auth.log:

But I have no ideas how to fix this problem.

[Bug 1340604] Re: [phone] crash files are only uploaded on boot

2014-07-18 Thread Joe Talbott
So after further digging what I think is happening is this: when
whoopsie calls monitor_connectivity() and we timeout getting the system
bus monitor_connectivity() returns FALSE and that's it. I think adding
a retry around the call to monitor_connectivity() might help mitigate
the problem until we can determine why it's timing out getting the
system bus.

2014-07-18 Thread Jake McGregor
I don't this this is specific to just LightDM. I tried installing KDM to
see if it too would lock up occasionally, and it does. It's very strange
because no keyboard input is recognized, not even ctrl+alt+f does
anything. Next time I'll give it a while to see if it snaps out of it.

[Bug 1297849] Re: VPN Connection fails after last upgrade on 14.04

2014-07-18 Thread E. Lefty Kreouzis
Further information -

If I find I can't start a VPN connection and I log out and log in again
then VPN connections work again.

There seems to be some kind of race issue between log in and network
connectivity. I don't have the first clue on where to look though

Work around: with IRC accounts, you do not must "grant access" for the
Ubuntu. So you can use a same nick in distinct accounts. What matters
for the remote connection is the nick configured in the options "Empathy
Messenger" of each account config.

[Bug 696841] Re: vlc stops playing audio after pause/resume or seek

2014-07-18 Thread John Crockett
I find it astonishing that this bug is marked "invalid."

Here I sit, using Ubuntu 14.04 and VLC 2.1.4 and I have the exact
problem described above. For me, sound does not stop when resuming from
pause. It only stops when I "click forward," mostly on mp4s but not
always. I can get the sound back by disabling audio and re-enabling it.

I have tried all the "fixes" described above and still have the same
problem. I am happy to provide any tech info you-all may need to
diagnose, but you will need to tell me what you need and how I can find
it.

Also, to the MANY others who have this issue (there are hundreds of
thousands of returns on the serach "VLC Sound stops when skipping
through a video"), you are neither alone nor crazy.

To Remi Denis-Courmont: Thank you for such an amazing product it is by
far my favorite and the best media player available. I will continue to
use it despite the minor annoyance this bug represents. I am a fellow
programmer, so I understand the thousands (likely tens of thousands) of
person-hours that has gone into this and am grateful to you and the
other voluteers. My sole purpose here is to make you aware of a problem
so you can make a great application even better.

[Bug 1045870] Re: I cannot use more than one IRC online account at a time

2014-07-18 Thread Alexandre Magno
You can join channels with /join command from the net of active channel.
You can enter into channels with /join command. The net will be the same
from active channel.

You can open the Empathy's contact list and then Control+J for choose
net and channel to enter.

But really the Empathy is not supporting two accounts with same nick.
For now you can configure distinct nicks for distinct accounts and after
of connected then use the commands /nick and /msg Nickserv IDENTIFY
.

[Bug 1277959] Re: [Asus 1015E] Fn+F2 is not working for activating/deactivating wifi

2014-07-18 Thread varunendra
@Ant,

Your model does not use the asus_nb_wmi driver which the bug is about,
so your problem is not related to this particular bug, nor is the
workaround for you. Blindly applying patches/workarounds not meant for
your model would only make the problem worse.

If you have a thread on the problem on ubuntuforums.org, please give me
its link so I can try what we can. If not, and the problem still exists,
I suggest you do that now - post a thread on ubuntuforums.org and give
me its link (posting it here or via PM on ubuntuforums).

PS:
Based on confirmations in comment #22 here, and comment #59 in the related bug
#1173681 , I have edited the ubuntuforums post
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2181558) to change the wapf value
from 1 to 4, and added the request to post the command output for model number.

Still unsure though why it broke on models on which there was no problem
with older kernels. As long as that remains unexplained and the Fn+F2
unfixed, this will still remain a 'Workaround', not a fix.

But thanks to you, Hans, for at least patching the code for reported
models to make them work out of box, and not requiring to apply the
workaround manually.

It'd be a delightful day when the real culprit is found and the 'real'
fix is released, so that the Fn+F2 issue is fixed too.

I have the "show applications menu on desktop right click" option
enabled in Settings -> Desktop -> Menus -> Desktop Menu. For years, I
have been comfortably right-clicking the desktop, dragging my mouse
cursor to the appropriate application, and releasing the mouse to launch
the application. Quick and easy.

Recently, a "right click edits launchers" feature was added to
xfdesktop, and it breaks my tried-and-true right-click menu. Now,
instead of launching my application, an "Edit Launcher" window appears.
This is obviously not what I want.

I can sort-of work around the problem by right-clicking the desktop,
releasing the button, then moving the mouse to my desired application,
and then clicking and releasing again, but the extra motions and extra
attention I have to spend on that approach makes it really awkward. It's
also special-case behavior that deviates from the way GUI menus work
pretty much everywhere else in the world. I want click-drag-release to
work again, please.

This looks like the commit that introduced the breakage:
http://git.xfce.org/xfce/xfdesktop/commit/?id=12b9528fd10769fff10346a503922fa280d0c293

Since the new feature can also be activated with a shift-click, I
suggest simply removing its right-click activation to fix this problem.
I'll attach a patch that does this.

2014-07-18 Thread RichardNeill
II also see this bug. It's definitely a problem!

I suspect that the reason relatively few people are complaining is that
(a) The problem is intermittent - the keys come and go, sometimes only a single
keystroke is dropped. Sometimes it takes many seconds.
(b) Nobody expects a bug of this type - and who would blame the combination of
keyboard + browser + input-field.
(c) Weirdly, the mouse still works, it's just the keyboard.
(d) When the bug occurs, the browser used to report it is broken!

Incidentally, I am submitting this bug by copy-pasting into Chrome:
middle-click paste still works.

[Bug 1273060] Re: [Fujitsu LIFEBOOK LH532 (UMA)] Ubuntu EFI install locks out firmware access

2014-07-18 Thread Satish
More info...

I updated and now the kernel version is 3.15.0-6-generic and
efibootmgr's 0.7.0

Now when I run just "efibootmgr", I get the following message

satish@LH532:~$ efibootmgr
show_boot_order(): No such file or directory

Looking at efibootmgr.c, it looks like the efi_get_variable() might be
failing although I do not see any 'new' entry in dmesg. The boot time
'efivars: get_next_variable: status=8002' exist.

[Bug 1311247] Re: [Grubenv] error: malformed file, press any key to continue

2014-07-18 Thread msth67
Follow up to my comment #69 : what is triggering the random "READ ERROR"
message is apparently rebooting the system:cold boot does now (kinda)
work with a separate boot partition and the workaround from comment #53
to hide the error message, however attempting to reboot the system often
triggers this other "READ ERROR" message for which I've found no other
solution than hard reset (power off) the computer and then booting it
again.

[Bug 1344535] [NEW] New "right click edits launchers" feature breaks "show applications menu on desktop right click"

2014-07-18 Thread Forest
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1310316] Re: Text scaling factor changing unexpectedly

2014-07-18 Thread Bernadette Addison
Please add me to this bug. With each logon, Ubunt tweak keeps changing
my text scaling factor to a larger size. When I open system settings,
and view Display, the scale menu option has NOT changed, but for some
reason Ubuntu tweak keeps taking over and changes the scaling factor,
making the fonts ugly large. I am using Lenovo ThinkPad T430 64bit, 8gb
ram.

[Bug 1344405] Re: Kernel missing /proc/keys

2014-07-18 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1344405/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1291321] Re: migration fails between 12.04 Precise and 14.04 Trusty

2014-07-18 Thread Alex Bligh
Looks like there is a patch here:

http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/qemu.git/tree/0001-Fix-migration-from-qemu-kvm.patch?h=f20

but it's either take it (and break inbound migrates from quantal etc.)
or don't (and break inbound migrates from precise). Another possibility
(unhelpful for libvirt possibly), would simply be a second binary for
this purpose.

[Bug 1344504] [NEW] utopic .iso won't boot to do an install.

2014-07-18 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

.iso 20140718 (and 17) boot to background, two flashing icons, no
desktop. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and tried ubuntu-bug which said there were missing
packages.

Lenovo M58p:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz

ubuntu-bug is from utopic 64 installed with a netbook on a USB drive.
Utopic usually boots on M58p however several times it would only boot
with nomodeset.

[Bug 1274320] Re: Error: diskfilter writes are not supported

2014-07-18 Thread Florent Flament
Hi,

Couldn't apply neither patch #70 nor #71 on my Ubuntu 14.04. I guess
00_header file may differ slightly between distributions.

$ patch -p0 00_header < recordfail.patch
patching file 00_header
Hunk #1 FAILED at 102.
1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file 00_header.rej

In the end I found the following quick workaround:
Comment out line 118 of file /etc/grub.d/00_header
# if [ -n "\${have_grubenv}" ]; then if [ -z "\${boot_once}" ]; then save_env
recordfail; fi; fi

Then do `update-grub`

[Bug 1291321] Re: migration fails between 12.04 Precise and 14.04 Trusty

2014-07-18 Thread Alex Bligh
This is pretty annoying. In a situation where you have many customer VMs
running on 12.04, and want to migrate them to a host running 14.04 (so
you can do a rolling OS upgrade), I'm afraid "shut down all your
customer VMs and restart" isn't really an option for obvious reasons.

Equally, installing two versions of qemu, or custom versions of qemu is
not really an option.

In my situation I'm not using virsh / libvirt, so adding '-machine
pc-1.0 -global cirrus-vga.vgamem_mb=10' or similar would be a reasonable
fix; when the VM is eventually rebooted, I can reboot without that, and
the hardware will appear to be upgraded (not great, but ok).

However, this doesn't work as (as far as I can tell) there is no way to get
past:
'Length mismatch: :00:03.0/virtio-net-pci.rom: 1 in != 2'

through command-line skulduggery.

What it seems to me one should do is define a pc-1.0-precise machine
type (which is obviously not going to be used by anyone using raring
etc.), and use this solely for incoming migrations. I'd produce the
patch myself save I've not yet discovered where the relevant tweak for
changing virtio-net-pci.rom size is.

If I find it (I've contributed to qemu before) would you take this as an
SRU?

[Bug 1329141] Re: qmlscene crashed while running test_can_launch_multiple_applications

The output of unity8.log would help, as it would show if unity8 rejected
the client connection (and thus causing client to crash) or not. That's
usually the reason for this error.

[Bug 1046563] Re: update-manager never appears on lubuntu precise > trusty

2014-07-18 Thread msth67
I still can't get this to work in my current installation of Lubuntu 14.04:I've
set all available updates to be displayed immediately, added update-notifier to
start up applications, and yet no notifications are ever visible.
So far,the only way to find updates has been to manually launch the update
manager or do sudo apt-get upgrade, neither of which is very convenient.
