[Bug 1356208] [NEW] groups syntax broken

2014-08-13 Thread Lukas
Public bug reported:

When adding a user, the 'groups' keyword only works if multiple groups
are given in useradd syntax, i.e. as a single string without spaces

groups: adm,sudo,cdrom

I'm guessing the value is passed directly to the --groups command line option
of useradd.
Any of the more intuitive syntax forms (including the one in the documentation
at http://cloudinit.readthedocs.org/en/latest/topics/examples.html) do not seem
to work. I've tried

groups: [adm, sudo, cdrom]

groups: adm, sudo, cdrom

groups:
  - adm
  - sudo

Thanks for the completely non-constructive message. Google me if you

current script is not safe for production use. My improvements make it
slightly more suitable out of the box.

2014-08-13 Thread Ondřej Surý
Should I be in awe or what? You can improve things even when not using
the argument from authority.

My point is that the default cron job works and is perfectly safe for
most deployments and it's documented in README.Debian that you need to
tweak the session cleanup if you do modification to session handling.
And I don't think we need to add more knobs for the edge cases.

[Bug 1356392] [NEW] lacks sw raid1 install support

2014-08-13 Thread LaMont Jones
Public bug reported:

There is evidence in both the trusty and utopic versions of curtin that
swraid support is on its way, but it appears to only think raid0 is
needed/desirable, at least thus far.

Installing machines that lack cciss (and therefore hardware raid) under
MAAS, we would still like to have RAID1. I can see other uses where
RAID5 or RAID10 might be a useful thing.

[Bug 1322302] Re: local provider is very slow to tranistion from agent-status: pending

2014-08-13 Thread Katherine Cox-Buday
The first half of this fix has been landed into trunk. When users
specify a stream in the image-stream config setting, Juju will use
this to determine which simple stream to sync. By specifying daily,
new machines will receive a more up-to-date image thus shortening the
time it takes to perform apt-get update/upgrade.

The second half which is designed to make OS update behavior
configurable is in the works.

[Bug 1322302] Re: local provider is very slow to tranistion from agent-status: pending

2014-08-13 Thread Robie Basak
Note that bug 1317680 may be a potential issue here. If you end up in
the situation that you've previously synced the same release from both a
daily and a released stream, then an attempt to create a container will
be unambiguous and thus fail. In that bug the issue was that the user
had manually done it locally. Here, the problem may be that Juju trips
itself up by ending up in that situation, if Juju mixes use of released
and daily streams.

I suppose a wider issue here is that we don't currently have a good
answer inside simplestreams for syncing images from multiple streams
into the same pool.

[Bug 1356113] Re: PHP5 session clean cron job causes OOM

2014-08-13 Thread Steve Kamerman
You can improve things even when not using the argument from
authority. I totally agree, I was just trying to make a point that I
know what I'm talking about, as opposed to being a passive observer.
You also know what you're talking about, and I can respect that as well.

If you seriously think running lsof on a server every 30 minutes
regardless of the necessity is perfectly safe, then I guess we can agree
to disagree :)

Prior to this bug report, my impression was that Ubuntu is developed in
an open fashion where everybody is welcome to contribute.
(http://community.ubuntu.com/contribute/developers/) This incident,
however, has put a bad taste in my mouth. Had I not been an open-source
developer already, I would certainly have turned away from the open-
source community.

Anyway, it is obvious that you are not going to consider my
contribution, so I will stop pushing the issue.

[Bug 1356494] [NEW] cloud-init does not recognize (and mount) ephemeral partition on KVM

2014-08-13 Thread Dmitrii Zagorodnov
Public bug reported:

When a KVM-based cloud instance is launched with ephemeral volume or
swap space on a partition of the root disk (e.g., /dev/vda2 and
/dev/vda3), the partition is ignored and remains unmounted. In the log
this looks as follows:

Aug 12 19:29:45 euca-172-28-165-121 [CLOUDINIT] cc_mounts.py[DEBUG]: Attempting
to determine the real name of ephemeral0

nonexistant default named mount ephemeral0
Aug 12 19:29:45 euca-172-28-165-121 [CLOUDINIT] cc_mounts.py[DEBUG]: Attempting
to determine the real name of swap
Aug 12 19:29:45 euca-172-28-165-121 [CLOUDINIT] DataSourceEc2.py[DEBUG]:
Remapped device name /dev/sda3 = /dev/vda3
Aug 12 19:29:45 euca-172-28-165-121 [CLOUDINIT] cc_mounts.py[DEBUG]: Mapped

Aug 12 19:29:45 euca-172-28-165-121 [CLOUDINIT] cc_mounts.py[DEBUG]: did not

Aug 12 19:29:45 euca-172-28-165-121 [CLOUDINIT] cc_mounts.py[DEBUG]: Ignoring
nonexistant default named mount swap

Earlier versions of cloud-init (e.g., one in Ubuntu 12.04) were able to
use such partitions, but latter versions (e.g., one in Ubuntu 14.04) are
not. It appears that a check for the block device's presence in
/sys/block was added between those two versions and it is causing the
failure.

This check succeeds on AWS with paravirtualized instances, where what
look like partitions (/dev/xvda1, /dev/xvda2, /dev/xvda3) of a disk
(/dev/xvda), are actually separate, unrelated Xen-provided block
devices, each with its own entry in /sys/block. When root, ephemeral,
and swap block devices are actually partitions of one KVM disk
(/dev/vda), they do not end up in /sys/block.

This was discovered in a Eucalyptus installation:
https://eucalyptus.atlassian.net/browse/EUCA-9251

[Bug 1356575] [NEW] VRRP AH auth_type broken in 1.2.7

2014-08-13 Thread Stoyan Stoyanov
Public bug reported:

A bug in keepalived 1.2.7 causes VRRP peers to ignore each other's VRRP
packets leading to a multi-master situation. The logs show the
following:

Aug 13 11:30:53 lb04 Keepalived_vrrp[22093]: bogus VRRP packet received on eth0
!!!
Aug 13 11:30:53 lb04 Keepalived_vrrp[22093]: VRRP_Instance(PRIV) ignoring
received advertisment...

received advertisment...
Aug 13 11:30:55 lb04 Keepalived_vrrp[22093]: receive an invalid ip number count
associated with VRID!

From 1.2.8 changelog:

* Ryan O'Hara fixed pointer arithmetic for VRRP packet.
When using IPSEC AH authentication, the pointer arithmetic used
to get the location of the VRRP packet is incorrect. The address
of the IPSEC header must be cast as (char *) in order to get
correct address of the VRRP packet. Without this patch,
vrrp_in_chk() will fail to verify incoming VRRP packets when
  IPSEC AH is enabled.

Please either update the package or backport the fix. The fix involves
updating a single line in vrrp.c:

[Bug 1355848] Re: Removing unit from existing percona cluster causes shared-db failure to related services

2014-08-13 Thread James Page
I see the issue; only the leader sets the username/password, and as we
don't have hooks (yet) in Juju for when the leader of a service changes,
we can't set it somewhere else easily when the existing leader is
removed.

This will be easily fixed when the leader election features land in
Juju; in the meantime we need to work something into the charms to deal
with this.

I think the same problem will happen with any charm that provides
credentials so raising a bug task for rabbitmq and keystone as well.

Apologies, I missed that you have to first apply patch in:

[Bug 1356392] Re: lacks sw raid1 install support

2014-08-13 Thread LaMont Jones
Following up on a discussion from today with more detail.

For metal in the datacenters, everything that can be RAID, is. The
driving reason for this is to avoid a disk failure resulting in machine
downtime. Given the number of drives in a modern datacenter, it's not a
question of if a drive fails, but rather how many drive failures did
we have this last week or two?.

In almost all cases, we have hardware RAID controllers, and this reality
is hidden from the operating system. In cases where we don't have a
card (blades being today's example), we use software RAID (allowing
operation with a degraded RAID) to achieve the same result.

Generally speaking, we use RAID1, with RAID 5 when the drives aren't big
enough and performance is less critical, RAID 10 where performance is
critical (and the individual drives are too small for the job).

[Bug 1354602] Re: package rpcbind 0.2.0-7ubuntu1.2 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/man/man8/rpcinfo.8.gz', which is also in package libc-bin 2.15-0ubuntu10.6

2014-08-13 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
A missing replaces: from rpcbind against the version of libc-bin in 12.04
means that upgrades may fail if libc-bin and rpcbind aren't unpacked in the
right order.

  [Test case]
- 1. Install rpcbind on 12.04.
- 2. dist-upgrade to 14.04.
+ 1. On 12.04, apt-get install rpcbind
+ 2. Update /etc/apt/sources.list to point to trusty.
+ 2. apt-get install rpcbind
  3. confirm that the upgrade fails due to rpcbind being unpacked before
libc-bin is upgraded.
  4. enable trusty-proposed in sources.list.
- 5. apt-get -f install
  6. apt-get install rpcbind
  7. confirm that the package install completes successfully
  8. confirm that apt-get dist-upgrade completes successfully

  [Regression potential]
Any changes to the package relationships may have an unforeseen detrimental
impact on apt's resolver. However, these are non-trivial to find in advance
and this change is locally correct with regards to package relationships.

  ===

Received an upgrade notice. I executed the upgrade procedures which
indicated 529 packages need to be installed. Upgrade requesrted that I
install the DVD. of the ISO file I had downloaded. Upgrade did not
complete and failed to reboot. I had to use recovery mode in order to
log back in. Again I received a mesage indicvating that 244 files needed
to be upgrade. This attempt alos failed. Received various messages the
there were dependencies issue and could not continue the upgrade

Had to revise the test case because this isn't necessarily reproducible
with a straight dist-upgrade due to arbitrary apt ordering, but I've
confirmed this fix now.

[Bug 1069843] Re: Nautilus consuming memory and cpu

2014-08-13 Thread Thomas Mayer
There's a bunch of bug reports out there, also affecting other distros:
https://bugs.debian.org/731304
https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2012/09/msg00124.html
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/33842/why-is-nautilus-using-100-of-the-cpu-on-fedora-19/

As long as nautilus can't write thumbnails (disk full) it seems to
consume cpu according to
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=655421. The missing symlink
could also prevent nautilus from writing thumbnails.

[Bug 1155634] Re: App launcher that isn't qmlscene

2014-08-13 Thread Timo Jyrinki
** Changed in: ubuntu-ui-toolkit (Ubuntu Raring)
   Status: New = Won't Fix

** Changed in: ubuntu-ui-toolkit
   Status: Fix Released = Confirmed

** Description changed:

qmlscene is a developer tool, but it is not great as an app launcher. It
would be worthwhile creating an app launcher which is better than
  qmlscene:

  1. integrates better with unity. For example, it does not seem possible to
run a QML app with qmlscene and specify a Launcher icon for it, without
installing the app by copying .desktop files into specific hardcoded
directories
  2. is better documented: qmlscene has no man page; the --help text does not
mention the --desktop_file_hint option at all

  See also http://qt-project.org/doc/qt-5.0/qtquick/qtquick-qmlscene.html
(The qmlscene utility is meant to be used for testing your QML
applications, and not as a launcher in a production environment. To
launch a QML application in a production environment, develop a custom
C++ application or bundle the QML file in a module.)

[Bug 1069843] Re: Nautilus consuming memory and cpu

2014-08-13 Thread Thomas Mayer
I guess a symlink in the home directories needs to be fixed by the
distros, not by gnome upstream. Changes in the package would not
necessarily fix the symlink in the home directories.

Plus, the nautilus software can't delete the wrong ~/.cache/thumbnails
directory, because this directory only has root permissions, which
nautilus eventually does not have. Maybe there's a way to work around
that, I don't know...

[Bug 1354313] Re: [Dell Inspiron 5721] Brightness control does not work with 12.04.5(with kernel 3.13)

2014-08-13 Thread Edward Lin
@kaxing,

Win8 doesn't use ACPI to control backlight but leaves control to gfx driver
instead.
If system tells BIOS that it has win8 capability, BIOS will disable ACPI
backlight interface.
Linux kernel starts to support Win8 capability after 3.7.
That's why ACPI backlight control works on early kernel version.

For win8 backlight issue, please refer to following article.

Re: [Bug 1355918] Re: smplayer window creeps up the screen when pause/resumed by spacebar

2014-08-13 Thread Stuart Gillies
Hi,

I couldn't find the option setting, (in a bit of a rush right now) but
it does stay on top if playing, not if paused.

I'm using ubuntu 14.04 as it comes i.e. unity and whatever window
manager is standard.

Stuart

Do you have the option Stay on top - while playing enabled?
I think this is the only option which can cause this issue.

What window manager are you using?

[Bug 1356208] [NEW] groups syntax broken

2014-08-13 Thread Lukas
Public bug reported:

When adding a user, the 'groups' keyword only works if multiple groups
are given in useradd syntax, i.e. as a single string without spaces

groups: adm,sudo,cdrom

I'm guessing the value is passed directly to the --groups command line option
of useradd.
Any of the more intuitive syntax forms (including the one in the documentation
at http://cloudinit.readthedocs.org/en/latest/topics/examples.html) do not seem
to work. I've tried

groups: [adm, sudo, cdrom]

groups: adm, sudo, cdrom

groups:
  - adm
  - sudo

[Bug 1356211] [NEW] cannot collect rotated syslog.1

Public bug reported:

Cannot collect rotated syslog.1 or syslog.2.gz by sosreport. If syslog
is rotated daily, syslog only contains logs in less than 24 hours.

I expect sosreport collects syslog and syslog.1 to see logs at least for

[Bug 1356210] Re: chromium-browser often crashes on page open, including chrome://settings

2014-08-13 Thread Apport retracing service
Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate a useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

outdated debug symbol package for libxshmfence1: package version 1.1-3
dbgsym version 1.1-2

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

Will this bug be fixed in next kernel update for trusty 14.04?

We have the problem that nfs4-id-mapping didn't work in 14.04 with
rpc.idmapd. Sometimes the UIDs are listet as 4294967294.

After rebuilding kernel 3.13.0-32 with build option
CONFIG_KEYS_DEBUG_PROC_KEY and using the new mapping method with
/proc/keys the problem was fixed. (Had to increase
kernel.keys.root_maxkeys and kernel.keys.maxkeys).

[Bug 1356213] [NEW] package linux-image-3.13.0-33-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 128

2014-08-13 Thread Ladislav Gallay
Public bug reported:

I was working in Chrome and system suddelny freezes. I could move my
mouse inside the window but could not get out of the borders. And system
was not responding to any clicks or any keybord buttons or shortcuts.

This happens a lot. Usually always when I work on linux at least once...
It is really annoying because only hard reboot helps.

 Is there a fix?
Not yet. Copy/paste requires clipboard support in Oxide which is not
planned for the next 1.2 release of Oxide. Oxide follows the same 6
weeks cadence as the upstream chromium project.

Sounds like a duplicate to bug 1339794 or bug 1321627.

If you have shell access, you could try either of these to get cellular
connectivity back:
 - /usr/share/ofono/scripts/online-modem
 - stop urfkill ; edit file /var/lib/urfkill/saved-states and change the [WWAN]
soft=true to soft=false ; start urfkill

Yeah problem is there are no clear steps, this just happens from time

don't keep it connected to usb.

If all else fails, we might need to resort to remote access to a device
someone got locked up.

[Bug 1355247] Re: STAC9228 / Dell XPS M1530 / Mic needs a boost, very low signal

2014-08-13 Thread Kokos
Hi Raymond, thank you for your reply.

I just tried different models and stayed with dell-BIOS as it was the
last one I've tried - no visible difference to me. Shall I use rather
different model or remove that option at all?

Regarding alsa driver, what would be the best source for the driver?
Shall I use oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms package from ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev
/alsa-daily?

Thank you a lot for confirmation.

Kind regards,
Konrad

[Bug 1355144] Re: Bluetooth page allows scrolling of devices within section

2014-08-13 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
** Description changed:

The Bluetooth page in system-settings allows scrolling of devices.

To reproduce, got to the Bluetooth section and make sure you either have
a device connected or in range. Once devices are in there, drag them
  up/down.

This happens in both sections: devices in range and connected/paired
  ones.
