I'm experiencing this bug on my Acer Aspire 5253-BZ480 and I'm not dual
booting at all just running a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04 but have had
the problem since I installed it back in April. It plays sound through
the speakers for just over a minute then shuts off. No solutions I've
tried work.

I have the same N56VZ laptop running 14.04 as well, and can confirm this
problem.
According to http://http.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/gpu-hdmi-audio-
document/gpu-hdmi-audio.html#_verify_your_card_exists the nVidia card
should show an audio device in lspci output if HDMI is connected and
enabled.

The upstream developer is recommending using the Utopic version of Attic
as a workaround for this bug.

e.g. with this patch it is still not possible to cancel a pending scan
for hosts, because the mutex is not correctly unlocked.
Unfortunately cherry-picking patches from 0.8.1 is far more difficult
than using directly the new one.
