[Bug 1461174] Re: Realtek Wifi card rtl8723be [10ec:b723] WiFi has an issue

2015-06-12 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Hi,
as this bug is affecting many different platforms, I don't think it's a BIOS
issue.

Verified on 201403-14879 - HP 355 G2 Notebook PC, with 14.04.2 stock image
installed
The RTL8723BE wireless card is very unstable, it can connect to the Internet at
the very beginning.
But stop working after a few minutes (still connected), the mtr ubuntu.com
command shows the packet loss rate is over 90% in 4000 packets.

[Bug 1460297] Re: preinst of udev was killed by signal (Illegal instruction), core dumped

2015-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
udev's preinst only has some standard autogenerated debhelper code,
mostly related to the ancient sysvinit-upstart migration. So this
rather looks like some random error induced by a memory or hard disk
problem? Can you please run a memory test (grub boot menu) and file
system check (also in grub boot menu, under rescue mode)?

** Summary changed:

- package udev 204-5ubuntu20.11 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new

[Bug 899878] Re: Software center have hardcoded colors and shows white font on white bg

2015-06-12 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Jakey_TheSnake: but the front page still looks terrible thanks to the
hardcoded background: http://i.imgur.com/Z1J9K42.png;

So anyone fluent with Gimp could fix that part, even if you aren't a
coder: edit or redraw http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntuone-control-
tower/software-center/trunk/view/head:/data/ui/gtk3/art/stipple.png
(download file) so that it is stipple on a transparent background,
rather than stipple on a hard-coded grey background.

Once we've done that, the colors won't need to be hard-coded for the
sake of the stipple background, so maybe removing those CSS rules is
enough to fix the bug.

[Bug 1453307] Re: The booting process ends in a terminal. No lightdm, no graphic screen. The file system is read only. It is a systemd problem, because I can use upstart with no problem.

2015-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1431743 ***

Thanks for the journal! Here we are:

So it seems your /etc/fstab contains an invalid entry for the root
partition. Can you please check sudo blkid for what the correct UUID
is for your root partition, and update it in /etc/fstab? If you don't
know how to do that, please just give me the output of

  cat /etc/fstab

(under upstart is fine), and I'll tell you how to adjust it.

[Bug 1464575] [NEW] Disk check fails the MD checksum on server 14.04.2 image

2015-06-12 Thread Gregor
Public bug reported:

I've checked the md5sum of downloaded iso. I've checked the USB drive
for any read/write errors or bad sectors to make sure it is not a
hardware error. I used various software to create USB live image.

With server image AMD64 14.04.2 and startup disk creator I get the following
message upon disk check:
./install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/pxelinux.cfg/default file failed the
MD5 checksum verification. Your CD-ROM or this file may have been corrupted.

doing the ckeck with unetbootin there are even more errors.

checking the mini.iso gives out even more errors.

I am not sure how the check process works and what is causing the error.
But how can the user then be sure the installer is good or if the error
can safely be dismissed?

Particularly worried since i think I came across another bug - when
using this image the installer later freezes at 33% and doesn't proceed
with formatting the disk for the / .

1. Ubuntu server AMD64 10.04.2
2. ?!?!?
3. I expect to get all is ok on the install media if all is OK. if something is
really wrong then the image is wrong.
4. it reported an error(s) on disk check. later or installer froze on disk
formatting (might be related or not).

[Bug 1319870] Re: [SRU] Removable media is being mounted randomly in multiseat systems

2015-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

Due to lack of full systemd-logind integration in current udisks2
package, automounting of removable media in multiseat setups is not
respecting seat hierarchy. All seats try to mount it at the same time,
resulting in a race condition. However, the expected behaviour is that
only the right seat (i.e. the seat whose USB port the removable media is
plugged in) should be able to mount it.

To solve this problem, just rebuild package udisks2 with additional
  build-dependencies libsystemd-login-dev and libsystemd-daemon-dev.

  [Test case]

  * Set up a multiseat system and try to mount a removable medium in one seat
- or another. Repeat this procedure several times.
+   or another. Repeat this procedure several times.
  * Before rebuilding udisks2 with full logind support, all seats will try to
- mount this medium at the same time, so it will be shown in one seat or
- another, randomly.
+   mount this medium at the same time, so it will be shown in one seat or
+   another, randomly.
  * After rebuilding udisks2 with full logind support, only one seat will
- succeed to mount the medium in all times it's plugged in.
+   succeed to mount the medium in all times it's plugged in.

  [Regression Potential]

- Very low. This rebuilt package was well tested in ppa:ubuntu-multiseat/ppa.
- It may happen that only one seat will be able to mount removable media,
regardless which seat owns the USB port the medium is plugged (due to lack of
systemd as PID 1), but at least there will be no race condition between seats.
+ Medium. This rebuilt package was well tested in ppa:ubuntu-multiseat/ppa.
+ It may happen that only one seat will be able to mount removable media,
regardless which seat owns the USB port the medium is plugged (due to lack of
systemd as PID 1), but at least there will be no race condition between seats.
But verification should include thorough testing that removable media is still
mounted correctly on non-multiseat systems, with multiple user sessions.

[Bug 1433557] Re: udev rules wrongly match on monitor hub, wrong invocation of systemd unit, changes config files in udev rules

2015-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
I checked the diff, and the generic match all HP devices rule was
restricted to only particular USB interfaces, which ought to fix the
matches on HP USB hub problem. The sed'ing is also gone. Thanks!

Would be nice if Andreas could confirm that all is well with this
version.

[Bug 1332520] Re: backlight bug

2015-06-12 Thread Daniele Laudani
To solve your problem just do as following:

sudo gedit /lib/udev/hwdb.d/60-keyboard.hwdb

Add below the line Series 7 / 9 this one:

keyboard:dmi:bvn*:bvr*:bd*:svn[sS][aA][mM][sS][uU][nN][gG]*:pn*670Z*:pvr*

Save and close, now on the terminal:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure udev

Reboot.
The patch for this was merged in systemd some days ago (see
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/136).

[Bug 1463635] Re: Apache2 waits indefinetely when reloading

2015-06-12 Thread Nano.net.tr
We dont exactly know why connection remains open.
There could be a problematic client connected or buggy php script running on
the server.

Whatever causes the problem that means if apache waits indefinitely,
anybody could launch a DOS attack on server (via a crafted, never ending
request).

Also in another view;
If this problem occurs, an inexperienced system administrator could not be
solve that.

I think default configurations must be safe, secure, user friendly and
tuneable.

If Ubuntu team thinks, thats the job of a system admin then i will
respect that and close the report.

[Bug 1448269] Re: qemu guest hangs on nested kvm startup with host kernel oops

2015-06-12 Thread Stefan Kooman
I had this issue (kernel oops) when I explicitly disabled ignore_msrs
(Ubuntu Trusty, 3.13.0-54-generic):

cat /etc/modprobe.d/qemu-system-x86.conf
options kvm-intel nested=y ept=y
options kvm ignore_msrs=1

Removing the option kvm ignore_msrs=1 made the guest (L2) run but give
a KVM: entry failed, hardware error 0x7 when the L1 guest (guest
hypervisor) was booted with these cpu flags (libvirt):

cpu archx86_64/arch modelNehalem/model vendorIntel/vendor
topology sockets='1' cores='2' threads='2'/ feature name='rdtscp'/
feature name='dca'/ feature name='pdcm'/ feature name='xtpr'/
feature name='tm2'/ feature name='est'/ feature name='vmx'/
feature name='ds_cpl'/ feature name='monitor'/ feature
name='dtes64'/ feature name='pbe'/ feature name='tm'/ feature
name='ht'/ feature name='ss'/ feature name='acpi'/ feature
name='ds'/ feature name='vme'/ /cpu

Guest VM (L2) running fine with these cpu flags (libvirt) for guest VM
(L1):

cpu match='exact' cpu mode='host-passthrough'/
modelNehalem/model feature policy='require' name='vmx'/ /cpu

@Serge Hallyn: I wonder what cpu parameters you have defined for your L1

[Bug 1464517] [NEW] cairo-dock-data is missing a dependency on gnome-settings-daemon

2015-06-12 Thread Sergio Gelato
Public bug reported:

/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/cairo-dock.session lists gnome-
settings-daemon (on trusty; may be unity-settings-daemon for some
releases of Ubuntu) as a required component. This is a real requirement:
when gnome-session-bin is installed but gnome-settings-daemon isn't,
attempts to log in to a cairo-dock desktop session fail with the
following messages in .xsession-errors:

gnome-session[17624]: WARNING: Unable to find required component
'gnome-settings-daemon'
gnome-session[17624]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail whale is dead. Sorry

Installing gnome-settings-daemon is sufficient to cure this symptom.
That makes me think that cairo-dock-data (which provides cairo-
dock.session) ought to have an explicit Depends: gnome-settings-daemon
(or possibly a Recommends:, but definitely nothing less than that).

I see that cairo-dock-core has a Recommends: gnome-session | other
stuff, but that's so likely to be satisfied by one of the other choices
to be almost useless. A survey of my trusty desktops indicates that
systems upgraded from precise have gnome-session installed but fresh
trusty installs only have gnome-session-bin. gnome-session depends on
gnome-settings-daemon but gnome-session-bin does not.

[Bug 1464568] [NEW] the master password dialog doesn't identify itself

2015-06-12 Thread Jeff Abrahamson
Public bug reported:

When firefox prompts for the master password, a dialog appears asking
for a password with text Please enter the master password for the
Software Security Device. But nowhere does it identify itself as
firefox nor does it explain which profile is asking for a password.

This is particularly important because firefox doesn't necessarily ask
for the master password at obvious times -- sometimes several minutes
after launch (with previous session's tabs opening in the background)
firefox will decide it's time, and meanwhile the firefox window is
hidden and I'm no longer thinking about firefox. In the event of
multiple profiles, I have to guess which profile's master password is
being requested.

Gunter,

sorry about the none comment #2, that was obviously bogus, I mis-
looked.

Can you please follow /usr/share/doc/systemd/README.Debian to boot with
a debug shell, then switch to it once it stalls, run journalctl -ab
/root/journal.txt, reboot, and attach /root/journal.txt here?

[Bug 1464560] [NEW] Backport request: include PRD support for OpenPower kernels

2015-06-12 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Public bug reported:

Following up on patches that were skipped in bug 1439562, this request
is for the PRD (Processor Runtime Diagnostics) support in the ppc64le
kernel.

Patches have recently hit linux-next:

0d7cd85 powerpc/powernv: Add opal-prd channel
594fcb9 powerpc/powernv: Expose OPAL APIs required by PRD interface
48c0615 powerpc/powernv: Merge common platform device initialisation

Let me know if you need any info (or dependencies) for these.

[Bug 1456789] Re: Unable to restart services from scripts

2015-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
Does that happen with any service? Or is that specific to smbd and sssd?
I suppose 'service' is not the culprit here, and it also happens if you
directly call sudo systemctl restart smbd.service?

Can you please do

  sudo systemd-analyze set-log-level debug
  sudo systemctl restart systemd-udevd

[Bug 1284093] Re: Please update regulations to support VHT

2015-06-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package wireless-regdb - 2014.11.18-1ubuntu1

---
wireless-regdb (2014.11.18-1ubuntu1) wily; urgency=medium

  * Resynchronise with Debian. LP: #1284093
Remaining changes:
- Replace REGDB_AUTHOR with the ubuntu-devel-discuss@ list, to create
our own private key for signing the regulatory data.
- Explicitly override dh_auto_build to make a new private key.
- Don't remove pubkeys, to make sure the key can be verified; but still
  remove /lib/crda/pubkeys/linville.key.pub.pem since that conflicts
  with crda.
- debian/patches/dont_auto_create_keypair: Drop the tilde from the key
path, since it isn't guaranteed to work on buildds.

[Bug 1067434] Re: Sound output device keeps changing when using headphones

2015-06-12 Thread Duncan-jacob-mk
Just posting to say That I still have this problem, I'm running the
newest linux mint KDE. I don't have pulse audio installed. I had to plug
my main sound into the headphone jack. (it's on top of my case, works
for me)

uname -a
Linux -desktop 3.13.0-37-generic #64-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 22 21:28:38 UTC
2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Well looking at the above output I guess i'm still using a 2014-sep
build.

lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: LinuxMint
Description:Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca
Release:17.1
Codename: rebecca

So I'm not sure if this is the most recent version or not...

[Bug 1414581] Re: [desktop] Long left edge swipe weird in desktop mode

2015-06-12 Thread Vesa Rautiainen
As Saviq said defining the desktop vs. touch device functionality is
still far from finished but we're actively working on these items to get
things nicely aligned. With this one I see there being two
possibilities. Either we disable whole long swipe functionality from
desktop or then we use it similarly as on touch. It would take you to
your home item. Whatever that means. On desktop I can imagine it being
the desktop application. But also this is to be designed.

[Bug 1463635] Re: Apache2 waits indefinetely when reloading

2015-06-12 Thread Nano.net.tr
We dont exactly know why connection remains open.
There could be a problematic client connected or buggy php script running on
the server.

Whatever causes the problem that means if apache waits indefinitely,
anybody could launch a DOS attack on server (via a crafted, never ending
request).

Also in another view;
If this problem occurs, an inexperienced system administrator could not be
solve that.

I think default configurations must be safe, secure, user friendly and
tuneable.

If Ubuntu team thinks, thats the job of a system admin then i will
respect that and close the report.

[Bug 1390061] Re: bash-completion tilde expansion every time

2015-06-12 Thread Ove Risberg
I checked my Ubuntu 14.04 machine and the problem is not solved yet.

Run this command:
strace bash -c . /etc/bash_completion; quote_readline '/something'; echo 21
| grep /etc/passwd

When the problem is solved you should get no output and now you get this output:
open(/etc/passwd, O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = 3

The output indicates that it tries to expand the ~ and this is not what
was intended and if some kind of network authentication is used it will
cause long delays... sometimes more then 10 seconds... so this is a
serious problem.

Please apply the patch I provided 7 months ago when I reported this
problem or test the fix they did upstream.

[Bug 1464530] [NEW] Black screen after Kernel update Dell XPS15, NVidia GeForce GT 750M

2015-06-12 Thread Thomas Darimont
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 15.04
Release:15.04

After upgrading to the kernel version 3.19.0-20-generic I only see a black
screen when the login screen should appea.
I can hear the drum roll of the login screen, so I guess it's a problem with
the graphics driver / display manager.

I'm currently using the NVIDIA binary driver - version 346.59 from
nvidia-346-updates (proprietary).
I've already tried every other NVIDIA driver offered in the Additional Drivers
Tab for Software and Updates.

Booting with the previous kernel 3.19.0-18-generic works fine.

The machine is a DELL XPS 15 model from 2015.

Bruce's is not a fix for this bug. It's a workaround, because the bug is
at Software center application.

[Bug 1314678] Re: Display brightness adjustable but does nothing when Adjust automatically is on

2015-06-12 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
This info was written by Seth Forshee (~sforshee) in February last year:

Android requires devices supply an xml config file that defines a number of
brightness parameters. Among these is a table which defines ambient light
sensor levels and the corresponding brightness which should be used at that
ambient level. powerd supports reading in these files (currently they're
located in
/usr/share/powerd/device_configs/config-device.xml). When autobrightness is
enabled powerd requests ambient light level updates and maintains two moving
averages of the ambient brightness, one slow and one fast.

The slow average responds more slowly in changes to ambient brightness.
It's used to decide when the ambient brightness has changed enough to
trigger a reevaluation of screen brightness. This avoids too frequently
changing the brightness for temporary ambient changes, e.g. quickly
passing by a window.

Once the delta in slow average exceeds a hysteresis value, the fast
average is used to determine the new brightness level. If the slow
average were used the adjustment is too gradual, so using the fast
average gets us to the new ideal brightness more quickly while still
filtering out very brief transients and jitter in the sensor readings.

Once we've initiated a brightness change powerd will do a sort of
polling every couple of seconds until the brightness level is at the
ideal brightness for the ambient, within a hysteresis. In my testing it
usually got within the hystersis on the first try, but occassionaly it
required 2 or (rarely) 3.

Also a note about the ambient to screen brightness mappings. The table
we get from android requires interpolation between the points. powerd
uses monotonic cubic spline interpolation for this, because that's what
Android uses for the same values (and it seems like an exceedingly
reasonable choice besides).

So regarding your proposal. With what's there today we start with is a set of
default manually defined brightness points which has been provided by the
device manufacturer, which when combined with the
interpolation gives the mapping function you described. What would be missing
is a algorithm to make adjustments to the table based on user feedback, APIs
for making these adjustments, and a non-volatile location for storing the table
after user changes have been made.

You seem to have an algorithm in mind, so I won't dwell on that, except
to make one comment. What you seem to be trying to do is provide a way
for the user to say, map the ambient brightness level at this
particular moment to the screen brightness I give you. The concern I
would have about this would be races, i.e. the ambient brightness level
changing such that the user-supplied brightness gets mapped to an
ambient brightness other than the one which was intended. That said, I
can't think of a better way to let the user tweak the autobrightness
levels.

I think you should consider storage before the API, i.e. who will be
storing the new user table. As of right now powerd doesn't store any
user settings, and the widely agreed upon plan has been that as a system
service it should not store user settings. If that model is maintained
then the shell would need to store the table just like it's supposed to
store the user-selected brightness or choice of ambient brightness
setting. In that case you'd probably need a set of APIs similar to these
to powerd:

* getAutobrightnessTable(): To allow the shell to read the autobrightness
powerd is currently using (to get the default one before any user changes have
been made).
* setAutobrightnessTable(): Tell powerd to start using the supplied mappings.
* getAmbientBrightness(): Read the current ambient brightness level. This could
also be requested from the ALS directly, though the fast moving average may be
a better value to target (except in conditions where ambient brightness
actually is changing, but it seems like you're probably going to end up with
poor results in that environment no matter what).

Of course if powerd were to do the storage then the set of APIs would be
different.

Other APIs needed for brightness should already be present, see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/powerd.

[Bug 1463023] Re: systemd Timed out waiting for device swap and file system check

2015-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
Thanks for your report. I don't see anything immediately wrong with your
/etc/fstab, blkid looks fine and has matching UUIDs. So I'm afraid I
need a full log to see what happened.

In the grub boot menu under Advanced options, please select the one-
time boot with systemd (you don't need to change packages for that),
'e'dit that line, drop any splash or quiet and instead append debug
systemd.debug-shell, then boot with Ctrl-X.

Once it hangs, you should be able to do Ctrl-Alt-F9 and land in the
debug shell. There, run journalctl -ab /root/journal.txt. Reboot
again (with upstart), and attach /root/journal.txt here. Thanks!
