[Bug 1476705] [NEW] postscript printer hideously slow in some cases (pdftops)
Public bug reported: With my (old) postscript printer, print a single page can take many minutes on some situations. It happens with some PDF files (not all) and Firefox printing of Google map, for example. When this happens, I observed in system monitor that pdftops is running continuously. After some manual PDF - PS conversions, I see that pdftops inflates the file size for problematic cases, but is ok for other files (size similar to the original file, or even smaller). I don't know if modern Postscript printers can handle this quickly, but it's unacceptable here and certainly not an efficient way to print those files. So I suspect that pdftops should be fixed. For example, I join a problematic pdf produced by Google Map in Firefox. I tried many conversions. As you can see, I get a much larger file (36 times) with pdftops. It is worse with pdf2ps (and it takes longer to process), so replace pdftops by pdf2ps is not an option for me. However, pdftocairo quickly produces an efficient file. I have the same success if I open the PDF file with Evince and print it as a Postscript file. I get a similar file if I print to PS directly from Google Map (Firefox). Of course these small PS file produced by pdftocairo, Evince of Firefox print flawlessly on my printer. Is it possible to replace pdftops with pdftocairo? I tried with a simple script but it doesn't work. See also Bug # 1095498 which I suspect is the same (old) thing, but I fill a new one since it doesn't seem to be printer specific. Well, currently, as long as the application process is running, the request for keeping the display list is respected. When the app is closed (or killed by OOM) the request is deleted. I agree the long term solution should be to drop it when the app is unfocused (although we should consider how that works with convergence and windowed mode before we make a decision). On a side note, I would also argue that most applications should even keep the display list all the time. For example, BigMovingText should not request the display to be kept lit while being in the settings menu, but only when it actually is displaying the big moving text. In order to create good quality apps, be clever and set screensaverEnabled to something meaningful instead of just false. I can't join Getting the data which would go to the printer since it's a 303 Mb file !!! Public bug reported: Ever since I upgraded from Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 to Ubuntu GNOME 15.04, I've had my entire desktop crash relatively quickly when using Spotify, if I mess around with the client much. Just starting the client is no problem, and it plays songs OK, but for a while whenever I clicked one of my playlists it would immediately crash. I stopped using the client for a while, but last week started using again and it was working for these simple cases. Today I started the client, picked a playlist, and grabbed the scrollbar and dragged it all the way to the top; as I was dragging my desktop crashed. I am trying to run AP tests on the desktop for a webbrowser-app branch that
uses components from UITK 1.3.
I build and install UITK packages from the trunk.
When running tests that use the keyboard, they all fail with the

if maliit-server is running by asking the status of the job, but there
is no such job installed at all on desktop, so this always fails.

It happens with some PDF files (not all) and Firefox printing of Google map, for example. When this happens, I observed in system monitor that pdftops is running continuously. After some manual PDF - PS conversions, I see that pdftops inflates the file size for problematic cases, but is ok for other files (size similar to the original file, or even smaller). I don't know if modern Postscript printers can handle this quickly, but it's unacceptable here and certainly not an efficient way to print those files. So I suspect that pdftops should be fixed. For example, I join a problematic pdf produced by Google Map in Firefox. I tried many conversions. As you can see, I get a much larger file (36 times) with pdftops. It is worse with pdf2ps (and it takes longer to process), so replace pdftops by pdf2ps is not an option for me. However, pdftocairo quickly produces an efficient file. I have the same success if I open the PDF file with Evince and print it as a Postscript file. I get a similar file if I print to PS directly from Google Map (Firefox). - Of course these small PS file produced by pdftocairo, Evince of Firefox + Of course these small PS files produced by pdftocairo, Evince of Firefox print flawlessly on my printer. I managed how to switch to pdftocairo: $ lpadmin -p HP-Color-Laserjet-2605dn -o pdftops-renderer- default=pdftocairo I know pdf2cairo is now called instead pdftops (system monitor), but it still takes minutes to print a really simple page (no gain). I'm lost. The work around for now is to use Switch User and authenticate, this will log you in and preserve your desktop session.
