[Bug 1291455] Re: [greeter] Screen and input should be disabled with proximity sensor when on greeter

2015-07-29 Thread Alexandros Frantzis
USC 0.1.0+15.10.20150728.1-0ubuntu1 solves one aspect of the problem
which involves SMS messages, but does not help with the phone call
accept/reject prompt or with turning on the screen in general when we
are in the greeter. Further discussions are needed (also in cooperation
with UX/design team), to decide the best way forward.

[Bug 1478592] Re: bcmwl-kernel-source fixes [Patch]

2015-07-29 Thread Andreas John
Hello,
I build the module with your patch. Thanks for that patch!

I work in a an environment with a cisco-based corporate Wi-Fi solution
which leads to a situation that I roam often. My observation is, that I
suspend, change the building and resume, the no traffic effect occurs.
In difference to your test-setup I can be sure, that the MAC (bssid) is
different, as the hotspot I was associated to is not longer in reach.

I just added the pm-script and will have a look at the effects. Are you
sure that removing wl is enough? Could the cfg802-stuff have 'wrong
MACs' stored?

rgds,
j

Unluckily, while I was backtesting, the bug came back also in the

It seemsa that has something to do with the use of thunderbird. In most
of the cases, the bug is present only when I launch thunderbird, and
then affects all the other windows.

[Bug 1479405] Re: no option to auto-resize

2015-07-29 Thread sudodus
@ Phill W,

The target drive was a USB 3 drive. Could that have caused the
confusion?

If you think it is wrong to report it as a red bug at the testing tracker, I'm
willing to change the test result to passed or even delete
my report at the testing tracker. We could also make the testcase optional or
even change it to something more relevant for the current version.

But I think this bug report should stay, because it describes a real
situation.

[Bug 1425172] Re: Network indicator lists the non-exist AP (timeout for the AP to be removed is too big, ~6min)

2015-07-29 Thread Tony Espy
@Matthew

Regarding comment #18. Yes, NM does regular scans automatically. Over
time, if it's not able to connect to an AP, the scan interval is
gradually increased up to a maximum of 2m between scans. A long time
ago, there used to be a method that nm-applet would use to tell NM that
the user was interacting with the UI, which would in turn cause the
scan_interval to revert back to it's minimum ( note, this may have just
happened when the GetAccessPoints method was invoked ), but at some
point a RequestScan method was added. I'm not sure if there's a trigger
to cause the scan_interval to revert to minimum anymore.

We could add logic to the indicator to request a scan, however there's
no way I can see to easily coordinate this with the current NM auto-scan
logic. NMDeviceWiFi doesn't appear to export it's internal 'Scanning'
property, nor does it export the current scan interval.

It may be that the we can change the cull_scan_list function to remove
the AP when wpa_supplicant indicates that a BSS has been removed,
although this might cause issues with roaming configurations as there
might be other BSSes in the same SSID group ), or we could lower the
prune_scan_interval...Fixing this logic is probably the most
promising short-term fix. Long term, getting the removal to approach
that of OS X or Android ( = 30s ) will definitely involve the
indicator in some way...

Re: [Bug 1465685] OTA4 SMS function now fails

2015-07-29 Thread LionelB
I was reluctant to try this as I don’t want to ruin the service which is
working well!

An interesting result though. With Three in slot 2 that service works
fine (on 2g only).

The PhoneCoop card in slot1 does not function (2g and 3g enabled).

That is maybe the simplest and most conclusive test.

It seems to say that the configuration data for PhoneCoop is incorrect
or the SIM card is damaged. The second explanation makes no sense. It
was safe inside the slot.

 On 21 Jul 2015, at 21:12, Tony Espy 1465...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote:

 The other thing to try is to swap your SIMs and see if that makes a
 difference. You currently have the 3 SIM in slot 1, which is currently
 enabled for 3g, whereas the Phone Co-op SIM is in the second slot, which
 is only capable of 2g. It could be that Phone Co-op's network doesn't
 support non-3g SMS messages. You can change which slot is capable of 3g
 via the Cellular system settings, or you can merely swap the SIMs and
 reboot.

[Bug 1479407] [NEW] Ubuntu Store: Need to use unicode for dates

2015-07-29 Thread Richard Somlói
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:
 * set the system language to hungarian
 * go to the installed apps scope
 * search an app with update from this month (for example Music)

what happens?
 * It shows Utolsó Frissítés (Last Update): 2015 jl. 29

what was expected?
 * Utolsó Frissítés: 2015 júl. 29

So it doesn't show the speical characters like: á, é, ó ... etc.
The following month strings are affected as well: ápr (april), már (march), máj
(may) jún (june).

I attached a screenshot too.

also tried 3.13 kernel (trusty) with xserver-xorg-video-radeon-lts-
utopic: no problem

it looks like it is driver-independent.
it seems to be a kernel bug more than a xorg-video-driver bug.

[Bug 1425172] Re: Network indicator lists the non-exist AP (timeout for the AP to be removed is too big, ~6min)

2015-07-29 Thread Tony Espy
Re-tested OTA5 images on arale, mako, and krillin.

Two scenarios:

1. Device connected to an AP
   - Android hotspot enabled, wait till it shows in the scan list
   - hotspot disabled, timer started
   - note time when hotspot disappears from scan list

2. Device ! connected to an AP; same steps as above.

I ran the scenarios three times each on all of the devices. The results
looks to be pretty similar across all devices. For the most part, it
takes ~6:30m for the hotspot to disappear from the list of APs exported
by NM. In one case ( mako / connected ), the AP was never removed ( I
waited more than 15m ). If I can reproduce this again, it'll require
some more investigation.

That said, I also discovered that the reason for the all the devices
having the same approximate time till the AP gets removed. The
NMDeviceWiFi class is responsible for aging out access points. It uses
a routine called cull_scan_list, which is invoked when a scan completes,
or NM gets notified of a BSS updated ( signal strength ) or a BSS
removed. This routine will only remove an AP from the list when it's
last-seen time is = 3 * MAX_SCAN_INTERVAL ( 2m ).  This is contrary to
Mathieu's assertion in comment #5. When a bss_removed signal is
received from wpa_supplicant, a WPAS_REMOVED property is set on the
GObject, but the AP is *not* removed from the AP list till the
prune_interval ( 6m ) is exceeded.

I was able to verify this by running wpa_supplicant's command line tool
( 'wpa_cli scan_results | grep Android' ) in addition to nmcli.  After
2m, the AP disappears from wpa_supplicant's scan results, but not NM's.

I didn't actually verify the receipt of the 'bss_removed' signal in NM,
and will do so this afternoon.

[Bug 1479455] [NEW] apt-get leaking memory and filling disk

2015-07-29 Thread Jack Miller
Public bug reported:

We have a few ppc64el machines in our lab running Ubuntu 15.04 and the
daily apt-get cronjob that runs will intermittently use all of its
memory and fill its disk.

Looking at the disk, it appears that the sources and packages files it's
downloading are unreasonably huge.

$ ls -l /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
...
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 480265872092 Jul 28 06:15
archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_vivid-updates_main_source_Sources.bz2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 462813724672 Jul 28 03:04
ports.ubuntu.com_ubuntu-ports_dists_vivid-updates_universe_binary-ppc64el_Packages.bz2
...

All of the other files look normal, maybe a few megabytes at most (as
you would expect from apt) but these two are almost half a terabyte in
size apiece which is clearly wrong and may only be limited by our disk
space (it's got a 1TB disk).

It appears that /usr/lib/apt/methods/http is still running.

$ ps aux | grep apt
root  1675  0.0  0.0   3136  1536 ?S06:25   0:00 /bin/sh

root  1766  0.0  0.0  11328  3072 ?S06:28   0:00
/usr/lib/apt/methods/copy

The system has almost all of its 32G of RAM filled as well, looking at
the rest of the ps output it doesn't look like the used memory is
actually attached to a process, but it's in the cache, so I assume it's
just a side effect of trying to work with the gigantic files.

2015-07-29 Thread thomas a. sargent
Hi:
I believe I have done what you asked. I tested the 4.2 kernel (still has
bug). I then made a new post and included the 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'
string in it. If that is not what you meant by 'tag' let me know.
Thanks very much for your attention to this troublesome problem.

 Title:
   hp x360 laptop keyboard freezes for 1 sec. every few minutes

 Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
   Incomplete

 Bug description:
   A couple weeks ago Installed ubuntu 14.04 on an hp spectre x360. It
   works great except for a strange keyboard problem. Every 2 or 3
   minutes the keyboard freezes for about 1 second - it misses keystrokes
   completely. Anything typed during that 1 second period is missed.
   For that same period, the LED in the F5 key turns off. The F5 key is
   normally illuminated. If you hit it, that turns the LED off and turns
   on the keyboard backlight. Hit it again, and the backlight goes off
   and F5 lights up again. Apparently while that light is out, the
   keyboard is disabled.

   I wrote a program that printed a variable character pattern to a
   terminal every 4 times/sec and just watched it. I wanted to know if
   the whole computer (or just whole desktop?) was freezing, or just the
   keyboard. When the keyboard light turned off, the program kept
   running, so I think it's just the keyboard.

   The timing of the light blinking off is variable. If I am not typing,
 the light seems to blink at a 2min 30 sec.to 3min 30 sec period. It
 seems more often than that when I am actually typing, perhaps 2 minutes.
 I'm guessing this is a keyboard driver problem? Anyone else seen this?

[Bug 1388130] Re: Cannot connect to WiFi with Nvidia GPU using nvidia-331, SSD

2015-07-29 Thread Leonid Volnitsky
I just want to confirm possible interaction between unity-greater and
nvidia. And I have SSD too, not sure if this is related.

My previous Ubuntu Vivid install with Nvidia-346 was bricked, with boot ending
at unity-greater.
I am not sure what caused it, I've attributed it to that I've played with
compiz settings and installed some extra gnome packages.

Now (after reinstalling Ubundu), I am able to connect to my home wifi
AP, but not to my phone AP (with error message as described in Bug:
1438003)

[Bug 1471903] Re: -updates, -security missing from apt lists

2015-07-29 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
@Brian: I need to add the overlay entries to the sources.list. Since
those are visible in apt/lists, but not there. In the same time I'm also
trying to get -security and -updates added to apt/lists correctly.

I'm still learning my way around all this, but I see that in fact it's
live-build that's removing those entries. lb_chroot_archives clears out
updates, security and proposed from that for ubuntu builds by default. I
guess I can somehow work around that, so no worries.

[Bug 1449560] Re: Cannot login with Nvidia Optimus hardware installed(Ubuntu 15.04)

2015-07-29 Thread Rene Greuel
Same problem for me. Temporarily workaround is to only use intel card by
selecting it through prime-select. This requires that you have installed
nvidia-prime:

- Get tty1 by pressing CTRL-ALT+F1

- Login with user with sudo rights

- Switch to intel card: sudo prime-select intel

- Restart lightdm: sudo systemctl restart lightdm.service

Hope this helps until this bug gets fixed.

[Bug 1479136] Re: [ubuntu 14.04.2] Artefacts in radeon driver on kernel 3.16 and upwards

2015-07-29 Thread thom
Okay, I narrowed it down to this:

Running on bare recovery console without Xorg : no problem
Running on bare normal (??framebuffered??) console without Xorg: blipstorm

The difference seems to me a loaded kernel driver...am I correct ??

If so, I could try out some new drivermodules or patches if you want me to.
( I have never patched or compiled kernel modules so I think I need a bit of
hand-holding with this one )

[Bug 1476211] Re: kswapd takes 100% CPU although there is no swap

2015-07-29 Thread Andreas E.
[[Ubuntu does not provide an update path for (these) Lenovo BIOS. Maybe
it would be nice to have a solution for this as well, to avoid users
being bound to buggy and outdated BIOS. To add, the given instructions
to the wiki seem very abandonned and do not (not all) apply to nowadays
ROMs of 10MB. Figuring that out cost me a day. ]]

After installing the Win8/BIOS, the problem still occurs.
  sudo dmidecode -s bios-version  sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
  76CN43WW
  03/30/2015

When I intentionally launch so many applications to trigger the freezes, I
noticed that `top` displays actually different numbers:
  KiB Mem:  8085948 total, 8023384 used,   62564 free,3564 buffers
  KiB Swap: 0 total, 0 used, 0 free. 2976336 cached Mem
The before mentioned numbers were from Gnome system monitor (oh!), which always
displays only 5GB / 65% of RAM. This time had also top opened before the freeze.
Do I interprete it right that under these conditions the memory is indeed full
and that system monitor displays (used‒cached) ?

The laptop was still frozen about 10min until the Kernel decided (or was
able to) kill processes and became repsonsive again. On a second test,
it didn't become responsive even after 20min.

So concluding,
• there could be a bug in system monitor to display (used ‒ cached) RAM
• I still don't know what it is doing within these 10 – ∞ minutes. I still
think the Kernel should be able to start killing processes (earlier), or there
should be warnings that can take effect before the computer becomes
unresponsive.

[Bug 1479093] Re: Segfault in ld-2.19.so while starting Steam after upgrade to 3.13.0-59.98

2015-07-29 Thread Norman Wilson
Here is a simpler example program:

#include stdio.h
#include string.h
#include errno.h
#include unistd.h
#include sys/types.h
#include wait.h

int
main(argc, argv)
int argc;
char **argv;
{
int pid, rpid;
int st;

if (argc  2) {
fprintf(stderr, usage: %s command ...\n, argv[0]);
return (1);
}
if ((pid = fork())  0) {
fprintf(stderr, fork: %s\n, strerror(errno));
return (1);
}
if (pid == 0) {
execvp(argv[1], argv[1]);
fprintf(stderr, exec: %s\n, strerror(errno));
return (1);
}
while ((rpid = wait(st))  0  rpid != pid)
;
if (rpid  0) {
fprintf(stderr, wait: %s\n, strerror(errno));
return (1);
}
printf(status 0x%x\n, st);
return (0);
}

There is some header-file fumble that prevents me from compiling this
with cc -m32, but there are both 32- and 64-bit systems in our
environment, so:

Using kernel 3.13.0-59:

Compile it on a 64-bit system, and run
  ./forkexec date
and all is well.

Compile it on a 32-bit system, then, on a 64-bit system, run
./forkexec date
and date prints nothing, while forkexec reports exit status 0x8b.

On the other hand, still on the 64-bit system, point it at a 32-bit binary and
all is well.  e.g.
   ./forkexec ./forkexec
just prints the expected usage: message, so it execed itself properly; no
SIGSEGV.

To confound matters further:
-- take out the fork (so the program just calls exec) and all is well
-- run the program under strace -f and the problem vanishes

All this happens under kernel 3.13.0-59 but not 3.13.0-55 (we've put off
a few updates).

[Bug 1475941] Re: Kernel panic - not syncing

2015-07-29 Thread Fibonacci
I've installed kernel 3.19.0-25, and now it's not enough to remove the
quiet option even in 3.19.0-22. I have to manually edit the grub menu
entry at boot time (writing it on grub.cfg doesn't work) and replace the
following lines:

if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root
--hint-bios=hd0,msdos7 --hint-efi=hd0,msdos7 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,msdos7
0e051a2e-be67-40a6-8d32-29d4de69aca1
else
  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root
0e051a2e-be67-40a6-8d32-29d4de69aca1
fi

with this:

  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-
bios=hd0,msdos7 --hint-efi=hd0,msdos7 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,msdos7
0e051a2e-be67-40a6-8d32-29d4de69aca1

That is true also for the newest kernel – if I don't do that, I get the
kernel panic message I described before.

2015-07-29 Thread L-reimann
hi guys,

please take a look at the date the bug was reported:
2014-09-25, status is auto-confirmed and prio is high.
Is there chance that this gets fixed before one year is over?
I would also argue the estimated number of unreported cases is much higher!
Greetings,

[Bug 1478539] Re: pci ... address space collision: conflicts with ACPI PM1a_EVT_BLK

2015-07-29 Thread WIll Salmon
Thanks. I'll look into trying this on a test VM and let you know the
outcome.

Do I just download these mainline kernel files using wget :-
linux-image-4.2.0-*generic*rc4201507271733_i386.deb
and corresponding linux-headers-*  ?

and then follow instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds to install ?

The affected VMs are headless web servers, running on VMware.

wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds says I need to uninstall select
proprietary or out-of-tree modules

Would this mean I need to uninstall VMware Tools on the chosen VM first ?
It seems to put modules into the kernel with depmod.

Thanks for your help

[Bug 1478592] Re: bcmwl-kernel-source fixes [Patch]

2015-07-29 Thread ldc
Hi Andreas,

Thanks for the assistance... What kernel-version and model of the wifi-
card are you using? Does it behave the same on both 2.4 and 5 Ghz?

For suspend/resume the pm-script seems to make it more stable atleast...
When/if getting the no traffic bug it's enough to unload/load the
module. It *may* take a few tries but the link comes back at least.. But
i think that since you suspend (and unload the driver) it should perform
better than before at least

During a full day of normal usage i have lost my link once, so it's an
improvement... unload / wait a few sec / load worked for me straight off
today.. Yesterday i had to reload it a few times, but then i did not
wait at all between unload/load, but it succeeded to come back anyway.

Main part of the patch is for 4.x support, but there is a couple of
things to prevent complete system-crashes. (Think it was in 3.18 or 3.19
that behavior started.)

I'm currently just trying to figure out a way to trigger the issue here,
in a reproducible way, to allow for some easier debugging.

[Bug 1479437] [NEW] USB Network adaptor modules missing in PXE netboot installer

2015-07-29 Thread Dennis
Public bug reported:

I'm setting up a PXE/Preseed install of Ubuntu 15.04 on a Dell XPS 13.
It has no wired network port and needs a USB network adapter ufortunatly
the two that I have attempted to use do not have kernel modules in the
netboot installer. I have managed to work around the issue by adding the
modules to the initrd but would like to see these devices working
without any extra steps in the future.

Could the modules for r8152 and ax88179_178a be added to the initrd?

Thanks!

 I'm still learning my way around all this, but I see that in fact it's
 live-build that's removing those entries. lb_chroot_archives clears out
 updates, security and proposed from that for ubuntu builds by default. I
 guess I can somehow work around that, so no worries.

That seems like a bug to me, as we would run into similar situations
(not being able to use ubuntu-bug with a package from any of those
pockets) from point release media like 14.04.3.
