Actually I solved the issue:
Using CDROM didn't work, running Memtest showed up many errors. But
after resting the BIOS, installation was completed successful and even
Memtest showed a single error. Obviously BIOS settings can make your
system unstable. Please mark this issue as fixed.

For me this was to do with my VPN connection and I have found a work-around. I
edited the file matching the name of my VPN connection in:
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/
