[Bug 815996] Re: Desktop occasionally freezes/locks up when switching workspaces
I've experienced an occasional lock-up when showing Workspaces as well. However, in my case I can see that applications are still running - for example I can still type into a terminal. I'm running 14.04 LTS in VirtualBox 5. I use Hotcorners to trigger the Workspaces view. I've noticed I can back out of this "crash" by sending Ctrl-Alt-Delete to the Ubuntu VM, which opens the Log Out dialogue. Requesting a screen lock from there triggers the animation to zoom to the currently selected Workspace. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/815996 Title: Desktop occasionally freezes/locks up when switching workspaces To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/815996/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1514065] Re: Windows move in workspaces after a window resize event
** Description changed: I run Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as a VirtualBox guest (both with VB 4.3.x and 5.x) using the default desktop. If I toggle the size of the screen - (using Host-Right-Ctrl) from maximised to not maximised and then back + (using Host-Right-Ctrl-F) from maximised to not maximised and then back again, the workspaces behave incorrectly. The same happens also if I save and restore a VirtualBox session from disk. Here is what goes wrong: - Maximised windows move between Workspaces - When activating the Workspaces viewer, maximised windows cannot be dragged to the Workspace they should be on - Unmaximising and re-maximising a window fixes the problem for that window only I have written a script to toggle the maximisation status of all windows, which resolves the problem. I will add that, and system information, once this report is submitted. I have installed a brand new Ubuntu guest using the "ubuntu-14.04.2 -desktop-amd64.iso" image and cannot reproduce the problem. I have a 24-core (48 thread) server with 64G of RAM. I am getting some strange behavior with respect to swapping and physical memory use. You can see my problem in 'top': top - 18:52:09 up 1 day, 2:25, 3 users, load average: 1.64, 1.30, 1.18 Tasks: 525 total, 2 running, 523 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie %Cpu(s): 0.3 us, 1.3 sy, 0.0 ni, 97.0 id, 1.4 wa, 0.0 hi, 0.0 si, 0.0 st KiB Mem: 65937528 total, 37526160 used, 28411368 free, 14396 buffers KiB Swap: 67071996 total, 67071724 used, 272 free. 104304 cached Mem PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 363 root 20 0 0 0 0 R 100.0 0.0 324:02.98 kswapd0 6725 theosib 20 0 99.398g 0.034t 8920 D 12.0 55.1 59:08.71 common_shell_ex There's a single user logged in (me), and I have a single process using a large amount of virtual memory. However, something is limiting it to around half the physical memory, while the swap partition is basically full. I've watched these processes (Synopsys Design Compiler) run, and they don't break the 50% mark until swap fills. And another weird thing is that kswapd0 uses very high (usually 100%) CPU. AFAIK, kswapd0 should be I/O bound and therefore not use a lot of CPU time. I've looked to see if there were any limits being imposed, but ulimit says otherwise: $ ulimit -a core file size (blocks, -c) 0 data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited scheduling priority (-e) 0 file size (blocks, -f) unlimited pending signals (-i) 257447 max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 64 max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited open files (-n) 1024 pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 8 POSIX message queues (bytes, -q) 819200 real-time priority (-r) 0 stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192 cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited max user processes (-u) 257447 virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited file locks (-x) unlimited I've also tried setting swappiness to 10, but that didn't help. This is a pretty serious problem. What used to take a few hours on 15.04 now takes more than 5 to 10 times longer, because the process is forced to wait on swap, which is reading and writing at about 20M/sec each. So it's hammering my SSD that contains the swap partition and going really slow. - I've done some googling about kswapd0 using high CPU, and all I can work - out is that some people think it's a kernel bug. + I've done some googling about kswapd0 using high CPU, and all I can work out is that some people think it's a kernel bug. + --- + AlsaDevices: + total 0 + crw-rw 1 root audio 116, 1 Nov 6 13:28 seq + crw-rw 1 root audio 116, 33 Nov 6 13:28 timer + AplayDevices: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory + ApportVersion: 2.19.1-0ubuntu3 + Architecture: amd64 + ArecordDevices: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory + AudioDevicesInUse: Error: command ['fuser', '-v', '/dev/snd/seq', '/dev/snd/timer'] failed with exit code 1: + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.10 + HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=e577be79-e4a4-41d9-b946-cd0cd50d05ba + InstallationDate: Installed on 2013-11-27 (709 days ago) + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu-Server 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Release amd64 (20120424.1) + MachineType: Supermicro X9DRW + Package: linux (not installed) + PciMultimedia: + + ProcEnviron: + TERM=screen + PATH=(custom, no user) + XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcFB: 0 VESA VGA + ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.2.0-16-generic root=UUID=08710eb9-367c-4be0-ba25-700476f690fc ro + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.2.0-16.19-generic 4.2.3 + RelatedPackageVersions: + linux-restricted-modules-4.2.0-16-generic N/A + linux-backports-modules-4.2.0-16-generic N/A + linux-firmware1.149 + RfKill: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory + Tags: wily + Uname: Linux 4.2.0-16-generic x86_64 + UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to wily on 2015-10-26 (11 days ago) + UserGroups: adm audio cdrom dip kvm lpadmin plugdev sambashare sudo video + _MarkForUpload: True + dmi.bios.date: 08/08/2013 + dmi.bios.vendor: American Megatrends Inc. + dmi.bios.version: 3.0a + dmi.board.asset.tag: To be filled by O.E.M. + dmi.board.name: X9DRW + dmi.board.vendor: Supermicro + dmi.board.version: 0123456789 + dmi.chassis.asset.tag: To Be Filled By O.E.M. + dmi.chassis.type: 3 + dmi.chassis.vendor: Supermicro + dmi.chassis.version: 0123456789 + dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnAmericanMegatrendsInc.:bvr3.0a:bd08/08/2013:svnSupermicro:pnX9DRW:pvr0123456789:rvnSupermicro:rnX9DRW:rvr0123456789:cvnSupermicro:ct3:cvr0123456789: + dmi.product.name: X9DRW + dmi.product.version: 0123456789 + dmi.sys.vendor: Supermicro ** Attachment added: "CRDA.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1513673/+attachment/4514730/+files/CRDA.txt -- You received this bug notification because you

[Bug 1240940] Re: Need support for Realtek Wifi card rtl8723be [10ec:b723]
Hi, I'm experiencing the same issue as @avirup-das. I have the RTL8723BE on my HP Stream 11. I verified the wifi works great in Windows (8) so the internal card is okay. Using Xubuntu-amd64 15.10 with new installed kernel 4.3.0 (same results as in kernel 4.2.0) Wifi does work and the laptop connects to the network, but my wireless controller reports a very weak signal from my laptop. Ubuntu also reports a weak signal with connection to the AP. I can only connect to wifi when sitting next to the AP. (All my other devices can connect fine from a certain distance from the AP.) Signal is stable (very near the AP) when sitting in the same place and there's no interference. Bandwidth/speed is between 1kb/sec and 100kb/sec max. # iwlist wlo1 txpower returns Tx-Power at 20dBm (100mW), so that seems okay. I've tried; - Using newest lwfinger git driver: Getting the above results - With and without the modprobe config options (tried on and off 'ips', 'msi', 'fwlps' and 'swlps'): "msi:Y" results in no connection, msi:N does give above results. No difference setting other options. - Use ndiswrapper to use Windows drivers for this card: This doesn't change anything to the above. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1240940 Title: Need support for Realtek Wifi card rtl8723be [10ec:b723] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hwe-next/+bug/1240940/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1512066] Re: Desktop screen and icon corruption
Geoff, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=3785043=8=4060 an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (1.26). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command: sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette . Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report. Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status New. Otherwise, please mark this as Invalid. Thank you for your understanding. ** Tags added: bios-outdated-1.32 ** Tags removed: bios-outdated-1.32 ** Tags added: bios-outdated-1.26 ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1512066 Title: Desktop screen and icon corruption To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1512066/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1514052] Re: erratic fan speed and little control kernel 4.2
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected wily ** Description changed: I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 15.10 and almost immediately my CPU fan started speeding and slowing without good reason even when the PC is idle. I tried various things but then found that if I leave the computer off for a long time and let everything cool down then when I boot from cold the CPU fan is stable. To test my theory of cold start out I then ran sudo cpupower frequency-set -g powersave followed by sudo cpupower frequency-set -g ondemand The final mode is the initial mode. Almost immediately as soon as I moved to powersave mode the erratic fan speed started. It did not stop when I returned to ondemand. Temp fix for this behaviour is - go and have a cup of coffee and let the computer cool down when you restart: shutdown then start from cold. $ uname -a Linux HomeMegaUbuntu 4.2.0-17-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 23 19:56:16 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. [Bug 1514060] Re: upgrade to 15.10 resolve generated breaks
Looking at the contents of file VarLogDistupgradeAptlog.txt, I think it might be related to Wine. The last few Ubuntu versions, anytime when I install Wine on a 64-bit installation, I always have to upgrade Wine on the command line. If I use the graphical updater, Wine packages are never upgraded because of missing i386 dependancies. The following CLI commands do find those dependancies, allowing Wine to be updated. sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade Perhaps this issue is now withholding the upgrade from proceeding. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1514060 Title: upgrade to 15.10 resolve generated breaks To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1514060/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode. [Bug 1514078] [NEW] Ubuntu freezes on boot when asking for encryption password on kernels newer then 3.19.0-28-generic
Public bug reported: I have my main partition encrypted. When I start my computer, Ubuntu will prompt me to enter my disk encryption password. This works fine on the kernel 3.19.0-28-generic, but if I use any of the newer kernels, like 29, 30, 31 and 32, the system appears to freeze as soon as it gets to the prompt screen. I can't actually tell whats going on when its frozen. The only symptom is that it does not accept keyboard input anymore, so I can't actually enter my encryption password. Nothing happens when I press the keys. It might have been that 1) the whole computer had a kernel panic, 2) it might be frozen in some other way, 3) or it may be just that something went wrong when setting up my keyboard to accept input and that the computer is otherwise running fine. I don't really know, all I can really tell is that if I go back to an older kernel, like 28, it works absolutely fine, but anything newer and I can't boot my computer at all. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "version.log" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1514078/+attachment/4514766/+files/version.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1514078 Title: Ubuntu freezes on boot when asking for encryption password on kernels newer then 3.19.0-28-generic To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1514078/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1514065] Re: Windows move in workspaces after a window resize event
System info: lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS Release:14.04 unity --version unity 7.2.5 Interestingly, I ran apport to get some system information, and I get this message: > Your system is providing 3D via software rendering rather than hardware rendering. This is a compatibility mode which should display 3D graphics properly but the performance may be very poor. If the problem you're reporting is related to graphics performance, your real question may be why X didn't use hardware acceleration for your system. 3D acceleration is indeed turned on for this VM, and Workspaces animation is very snappy, so as far as I've been aware it +has+ been using hardware acceleration. [Bug 1509723] Re: [Acer Aspire ES1-311] Ubuntu freezes occasionally
i have an acer aspire ES1-711 and have this problem as well. kernel boot parameters are cat /proc/cmdline BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.3.0 root=/dev/sda6 ro drm.debug=0xe i915.enable_rc6=0 i915.semaphores=1 it happens absolutely sporadically, it can be running 30h without crashing or it can happen within hours. it seems like setting kernel parameters for i915 doesn't change anything, i tried all of them. no logs, no crashdumps. just a complete freeze without any option to do anything. i have tried all kind of kernels, only 3.x a few and 4.x series a lot of them, now i am running 4.3.0 since a few hours. my operating system is gentoo linux. i also have another partition with linux mint rafaela (ubuntu 14.04 based i believe) there the freeze doesn't occur. i have also tried disabling cpu-frequency scaling in the kernel completely, have tried playing around with intel_pstate, but that does not seem to be the problem as well. now i will enable all the panic flags like described in the crashdumprecipe and hope to get any trace generated -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1509723 Title: [Acer Aspire ES1-311] Ubuntu freezes occasionally To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1509723/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Gaele Strootman, the next step is to fully commit bisect from kernel 3.19 to 4.2 in order to identify the last good kernel commit, followed immediately by the first bad one. This will allow for a more expedited analysis of the root cause of your issue. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ? [Bug 694224] Re: Synchronous notifications briefly steal focus
I'm definitely seeing this as new behavior after the 15.10 upgrade. [Bug 1512266] Re: Xubuntu. Plymouth breaks after upgrade from 14.04.0 to 14.04.3
This is almost certainly not an issue with plymouth, but with the kernel. There were regressions recently reported against the SRUed kernel in vivid, which would also apply to the hwe-vivid kernel. Bear in mind that for a system whose hardware already functions properly with the 14.04.0 kernel, it is not generally recommended to switch to a hardware enablement stack. ** Package changed: plymouth (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1512266 Title: Xubuntu. [Bug 1514065] [NEW] Windows move in workspaces after a window resize event
Public bug reported: I run Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as a VirtualBox guest (both with VB 4.3.x and 5.x) using the default desktop. If I toggle the size of the screen (using Host-Right-Ctrl) from maximised to not maximised and then back again, the workspaces behave incorrectly. It is perhaps the case that the problematic machine was installed using the "ubuntu-14.04-desktop-amd64.iso" image (I don't know if that would matter). ** Affects: compiz-plugins-main (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1514065 Title: Windows move in workspaces after a window resize event To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz-plugins-main/+bug/1514065/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1514064] [NEW] SMART Data & Self-Tests Re-Enabled After Reboot
Public bug reported: The SMART Data & Self-Tests On/Off toggle control can be used to disable SMART data collection for the disk. It works for the duration of the session but it is always re-enabled after a reboot. I don't know whether the problem affects all disk types but it has certainly been an issue for my Hitachi HDS722020ALA330 for the last few versions of Linux Mint, at least as far back as Mint 16 and up to the present. I presume it must exist in standard Ubuntu versions too. Background, possibly irrelevant, justification information: The disk in question is relatively noisy and produces heat. It is only used for occasional backups. I would like it spun down most of the time. For my disk the APM spin down is prevented from working by the SMART data collection. This is why I want to disable SMART. I believe the problem of SMART data collection preventing spin-down is an issue that only affects certain models of drive. It's something I looked at over a year ago and my memory is a bit rusty. I do remember coming to the conclusion that disabling SMART was the only viable work- around for my system. [Bug 1511974] Re: Touchpad Not Working
Mitchell Limas, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder)? Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . This will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Where X, Y, and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version. If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream. Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.
