[Bug 1577096] [NEW] MySQL 5.7 on Xenial ships w/mysqld.cnf that causes crash

2016-04-30 Thread Tom
Public bug reported:

The mysqld.cnf file includes a commented out line for log_slow_queries
= /var/log/mysql/mysql-slow.log

As it turns out, log_slow_queries was deprecated long ago and it now
causes MySQL 5.7 to fail to start/restart if it exists. The current
variable/option is slow_query_log_file. By including this deprecated
variable/option, users are going to get failures to restart that are not
even printed to the MySQL log file. I did not find ANY log of what
happened, only that MySQL failed to start. I believe this justifies
updating mysqld.cnf with the current option so other users don't go
through the frustration that I just experienced.

For me, this is running on a clean install of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with the
default xenial package install for mysql (which is 5.7). I installed it
via "apt-get install".

[Bug 1577095] [NEW] no sound from pulseaudio

2016-04-30 Thread Jerry Quinn
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded to 16.04 LTS. After upgrade, I have problems with sound
playing.

If I use 'play' from the command line, I get sound. The System Settings

Playing a youtube video from either chromium or firefox gives silence.

@peterzay It is useless to file a bug to the upstream. They removed that

try file a for newer nautilus (>=3.20).

[Bug 1577093] [NEW] libreoffice-gtk conflicts with large lo-writer file

2016-04-30 Thread Jurgen Schellaert
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS installed originally from a weekly beta2 ISO; the
image was verified at the time to match its checksum and the install has
since consistently been upgraded.

>From the start, Libreoffice writer (1:5.1.2-0ubuntu1 - amd64) has
struggled with a "large" file I have been working on since Ubuntu 15.04,
although it works perfectly for newly created files or existing smaller
files, though.

I was hoping to continue using my exiting file, however: one that counts
about 14,000 paragraphs, 3.5 million characters and some 300 tables as
well a large number of bookmarks/internal links).

I should have hoped that LO would simply load it and let me get on with
my work as it did before.

Unfortunately, here is what really happens whenever I try to load it:
- when the progress bar completes , Writer greys out and locks up for several
minutes on end (anything from a few minutes to a quarter of an hour)
- during that time, the interface is clearly distorted (two overlapping status
bars - duplicated vertical scrollbars at the right side - the title bar
covering up the menu bar as well as part of the upper toolbar - the horizontal
ruler shifted to the right, causing the "comments" column to appear on the left
rather than the right)
- when the file eventually gets loaded and the interface is restored, the menus
turns out to be unusable: the drop-downs are narrow blacks slabs without any
entries and without any responsiveness
- the page count is wildly off: the file is about 1100 pages, yet Writer
reports over 1800; at any moment, however, it will update its count to reflect
the actual number.
- random actions can produce a new prolonged lock-up; in particular copying
text, opening up the navigator or doing a search.

The only way to open the file in a usable way is to restart Writer
several times in a row (which takes LOTS of patience considering the
time it takes the file to load...)

Apparently, the only way to avoid these problems is to delete the
libreoffice-gnome/gtk packages. Unfortunately, that leaves me with an
interface that looks like are relic from a previous century

I did not much like that, so I have experimented with the debs
available directly from the LibreOffice project. Sadly, I am seeing the
same behaviour.

[Bug 1380480] Re: network disabled after suspend - resume

2016-04-30 Thread lauricat
Can confirm same here, clean 16.04 MATE install. Latest intel iwlwifi
driver for c6205 wifi card.

Network list not refreshing after resume from suspend, but reconnects to
WiFi Network previously connected. (laptop not moved to new location -
hence same network present, but not listed.)

Disabling and re-enabling WiFi does nothing.

Disabling and re-enabling WiFi H/W switch does nothing.

Disabling and re-enabling Networking does nothing.

Tests include going back - clean install - to 14.04.2 MATE and fault
non-existent. So I can eliminate H/W issues.

Work around for me that works:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/761180/wifi-doesnt-work-after-suspend-
after-16-04-upgrade

I have used script, and automated it, as mentioned here and confirms it
works for me.

On my research this problem is very widespread and was mentioned in
latest Linux Action Show:

http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/99036/linuxfest-
northwest-2016-las-414/ [see 26:19]

[Bug 1577088] [NEW] OVS+DPDK crashes at the host, right after starting another OVS+DPDK inside of a KVM Guest, if multi-queue is enabled

2016-04-30 Thread Thiago Martins
Public bug reported:

Guys,

It is possible to crash OVS + DPDK running at the host, from inside of
a KVM Guest!

All you need to do, is to enable multi-queue, then, from a KVM Guest,
you can kill OVS running at the host...

 * Hardware requirements (might be exaggerated but this is what I have):

 1 Dell Server with dedicated 2 x 10G NIC cards, plus another 1 or 2 1G NIC,
for management, apt-get, ssh, etc;
1 IXIA Traffic Generator - 10G in both directions.

 * Steps to reproduce, at a glance:

 1- Deploy Ubuntu at the host;

 a. Grub options /etc/default/grub:

-
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash iommu=pt intel_iommu=on
default_hugepagesz=1GB hugepagesz=1G hugepages=64"
-

 2- Install OVS with DPDK;

3- Configure DPDK, 1G Hugepages, PCI IDs and create the OVS bridges for a VM:

 a. /etc/default/openvswitch-switch:

-
DPDK_OPTS='--dpdk -c 0x1 -n 4 -m 2048,0 --vhost-owner libvirt-qemu:kvm
--vhost-perm 0664'
-

 b. /etc/dpdk/interfaces:

-
pci :06:00.0 uio_pci_generic
pci :06:00.1 uio_pci_generic
-

NOTE: those PCI devices are located at NUMA Node 0.

 c. DPDK Hugepages /etc/dpdk/dpdk.conf:

-
NR_1G_PAGES=32
-

 d. OVS Bridges:

ovs-vsctl add-br br0 -- set bridge br0 datapath_type=netdev
ovs-vsctl add-port br0 dpdk0 -- set Interface dpdk0 type=dpdk
ovs-vsctl add-port br0 vhost-user1 -- set Interface vhost-user1
type=dpdkvhostuser

ovs-vsctl add-br br1 -- set bridge br1 datapath_type=netdev
ovs-vsctl add-port br1 dpdk1 -- set Interface dpdk1 type=dpdk
ovs-vsctl add-port br1 vhost-user2 -- set Interface vhost-user2
type=dpdkvhostuser

ip link set dev br0 up
ip link set dev br1 up

4- At the host, enable multi-queue and add more CPU Cores to OVS+DPDK PMD
threads:

ovs-vsctl set Open_vSwitch . other_config:n-dpdk-rxqs=4
ovs-vsctl set Open_vSwitch . other_config:pmd-cpu-mask=

5- Deploy Ubuntu at the VM, full Libvirt XML:

 a. ubuntu-16.01-1 XML:

 https://paste.ubuntu.com/16162857/

 b. /etc/default/grub:

-
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="default_hugepagesz=1GB hugepagesz=1G hugepages=1"
-

 6- Install OVS with DPDK;

7- Configure DPDK, 1G Hugepages, PCI IDs and create the OVS bridges within the
VM:

NOTE: Do NOT enable multi-queue inside of the VM yet, you'll see that,
so far, it will work!

 a. /etc/default/openvswitch-switch:

-
DPDK_OPTS='--dpdk -c 0x1 -n 4 -m 1024 --pci-blacklist :00:03.0
--pci-blacklist :00:04.0'
-

 b. /etc/dpdk/interfaces:

-
pci :00:05.0 uio_pci_generic
pci :00:06.0 uio_pci_generic
-

 c. DPDK Hugepages /etc/dpdk/dpdk.conf:

-
NR_1G_PAGES=1
-

 d. OVS Bridge:

ovs-vsctl add-br ovsbr -- set bridge ovsbr datapath_type=netdev
ovs-vsctl add-port ovsbr dpdk0 -- set Interface dpdk0 type=dpdk
ovs-vsctl add-port ovsbr dpdk1 -- set Interface dpdk1 type=dpdk

ip link set dev ovsbr up

NOTE 1: So far, so good! But no multi-queue yet!

NOTE 2: Sometimes, you can crash ovs-vswitchd at the host, right
here!!!

8- At the VM, add more CPU Cores to OVS+DPDK PMD threads:

2 Cores):

ovs-vsctl set Open_vSwitch . other_config:pmd-cpu-mask=6

or:

4 Cores):

ovs-vsctl set Open_vSwitch . other_config:pmd-cpu-mask=F

9- Enable multi-queue before starting up DPDK and OVS, run this inside of the
VM:

systemctl disable dpdk
systemctl disable openvswitch-switch

reboot

ethtool -L ens5 combined 4
ethtool -L ens6 combined 4

service dpdk start
service openvswitch-switch start

BOOM!!!

10- Error log at the host (ovs-vswitchd + DPDK crashed):

 https://paste.ubuntu.com/16152614/

 IMPORTANT NOTES:

 * Sometimes, even without enabling multi-queue at the VM, ovs-vswitchd
at the host, crashes!

** Also, more weird, is that I have a proprietary DPDK App (L2 Bridge
for DPI), that uses multi-queue automatically and it does NOT crash the
ovs-vswitchd running at the host! I can use my DPDK App with multi-
queue, but I can't do the same with OVS+DPDK.

So, if I replace "ubuntu16.01-1.qcow2", by my own qcow2 where I have a
proprietary DPDK App, I can use multi-queue, OVS+DPDK at the host works just
fine (slower than PCI Pass but, acceptable, much better than just regular OVS).

Cheers!
Thiago

[Bug 1577086] [NEW] Sound notifications during a phone call

2016-04-30 Thread GTriderXC
Public bug reported:

It is similar problem to the one described in a bug #1290201.
If we receive a sms message during a phone call, we get a normal incomming
message notification sound. If You then receive many messages during talking to
someone, You have even greater problem to the one described in 1290201. All
what You say is accompanied with the sounds nobody wants to hear.

When it happens:
Call someone or answer the incoming call then during it receive a sms message

Expected behaviour:
When talking to somebody our phone should either mute all notifications (as new
message or dying battery) or (as Nokia used to do it) notify us in a more
discreet and polite manner that only I could hear, not the person I'm talking
with.

[Bug 1577057] Re: zfs initrd script fails when rootdelay boot option is set

2016-04-30 Thread Richard Laager
What did you have rootdelay set to? I just tested again now with
"rootdelay=1" as well as the useless "rootdelay=0" and invalid
"rootdelay=".

Try adding "set -x" to the top of /usr/share/initramfs-
tools/scripts/zfs, rebuilding the init script, and rebooting with
rootdelay set. Grab a picture of the output so I can see what it's
running just before it fails.

According to the README.formats file, which is included in the fonts-
noto-cjk source package, OTC "works" on recent versions of Mac and Linux
but not Windows. So they don't seem to be identical.

Hmm.. I see now that you anticipated problems with "Super OTC" [1] long
ago. At that time I hadn't a clue what you were talking about. :(

What you say is correct, but we shouldn't use the whole community of
Ubuntu users as a test panel, should we?

Why not do both? I filed this ticket:
https://github.com/googlei18n/noto-cjk/issues/65

Hopefully it's the right place.

Can you possibly confirm that the PPA version of fonts-noto-cjk
addresses the issues we have found up to now (at the expense of more
disk space)?

[1] Super OTC is the font format installed with the version of
fonts-noto-cjk which is currently in the Ubuntu archive.

[Bug 1576948] Re: ubuntu 16.04 not installing properly. shown grub-installer error, m/c will not boot,

2016-04-30 Thread Phillip Susi
Your disk is currently partitioned to boot in bios mode, but you booted
the 16.04 installer in EFI mode. A warning message prompted you that
this could be a problem and recommended performing a bios mode install
instead, but you chose not to. You either need to perform the bios mode
install, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system
partition to install in EFI mode. This will be done for you if you
choose the "use entire disk" guided install option.

[Bug 1506817] Re: left TPP/2 IBM TrackPoint "sticks on" randomly (X250 15.04)

2016-04-30 Thread Jont Allen
in message #34 you requested that In install 4.6-rc4
In message #36 I discussed 4.6-rc5, which did not resolve the issue.
in message #34 based on your request, I installed rc4, which did not resolve
the issue.
in message #17 I used 4.5-rc3 (NOT 4.6), and it did resolve the issue.
in message #21 I state:
"I was running kernel 4.5-rc3 and everything was great. Then sometime around
Feb 3, 2016 (I don't know the exact date),
following an standard upgrade from Ubuntu, the old symptoms (left mouse button
sticking) returned."

This abrupt change was not due to a kernel change. I was running
4.5-rc3, before and after

After Feb 3 the X250 was unuseable no matter what I did. If you read the
details, I tried all sorts of things. I even
reinstalled the OS from scratch and tried to reinstall 4.5-rc3, from scratch.
To no avail. Nothing worked.

NOTE: the USB mouse has always been totally functional, and the trackpad
and trackpoint work, but the left mouse button sticks on, rendering the
computer useable.

Eventually I was forced to switched over to my previous computer X220i,
which has both a trackpad and trackpoint. This machine works perfectly.
The X250 is sitting in the corner, unuseable (unless I downgrade to a
USB mouse, which works perfectly on the X250).

In my last attempt, today April 30, 2016, I swapped computers with my
wife, so I now have her X250. That functions exactly as my X250. This
rules out any hardware issues.

It is noteable, IMO, that the BIOS in the X220i and the X250 behave very
different wrt the synaptics mouse, as documented
in message #35.

Status today: I'm using the X220i for daily work. The X250 still has the mouse
bug.
None of the kernel and BIOS changes had any effect at all.
The X250 spontaneously stopped working on or about Feb 2, following a standard
upgrade (not a kernel change!)

Chris, I appreciate your attention to this, but I think we need to get
to a new level re this problem. If the community wishes to continue to
use X series thinkpads (I'm sure they do), then this problem needs a
resolution.

What will Lenovo come up with next? Is the beginning of the end of
Thinkpads and Linux?

I have more than 10 of these X-series laptops lying around my office.
I've been using X hardware for many years. I see this as the end of the
line, all due to a stupid mouse driver bug.

Please correct me if I'm wrong in my summary.

Jont

[Bug 1573160] Re: package fwupdate 0.5-2ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2016-04-30 Thread Richard
I had it again on upgrade of another system from 14.04 to 16.04

I used:
do-release-upgrade -d

/boot/efi ws mounted ro for some reason. The line in fstab is:
UUID=a369305d-809f-3317-8484-01d6c86315c5 /boot/efi auto defaults 0 3

- the file system was not dirty
- mount -o remount,rw /boot/efi failed with no logging or explanation

get-around:
mount | grep /boot
- note device, mount point and options
umount /dev/sda1 # the device
mount -o relatime,umask=22,uid=0,gid=0,nls=utf8 /dev/sda1 /boot/efi # options
less the ro, device and mount point

The installer on continue will display:
Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A
recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Setting up fwupdate (0.5-2ubuntu4) ...
Installing fwupia32.efi to EFI system partition.
Setting up fwupdate-signed (1.11+0.5-2ubuntu4) ...

Upgrade complete

The upgrade has completed but there were errors during the upgrade
process.

To continue please press [ENTER]

Suggested fix:
if fwupdate notices /boot/efi being ro, print this fact and wait for ENTER key.
- the user can then in another terminal fix the problem

[Bug 1576953] Re: e1000e driver failed with error -3

2016-04-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Diego, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

In order to allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue, at your
earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel
available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please
keep in mind the following:
1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the
daily folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was
released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't
boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue
to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is
the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically
requested to do so.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this
report Status Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

2016-04-30 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I get the warning (in yakkety) when installing flashplugin-installer
(see attached file). OTOH it's followed by:

Installing from local file
/var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-downloads/partial/adobe-flashplugin_20160407.1.orig.tar.gz
Flash Plugin installed.
Setting up flashplugin-installer (11.2.202.616ubuntu5) ...

So Steve is probably right; the operation seems to succeed.

Nevertheless, the warning message is an annoyance, and a fix which
prevents it from popping up is highly desirable IMO.

(is the affected package possibly apt?)

[Bug 1577001] Re: Installing lxd leaves /var/lib/lxd/unix.socket with wrong group ownership

2016-04-30 Thread Stéphane Graber
Moving over to systemd, our unit is very clear about the expected owner
for the socket. The needed group is created in preinst so is guaranteed
to be there by the time systemd is poked in postinst. LXD itself doesn't
change socket ownership when socket activated and if it did, it would
honor the --group option which would have it chown to the right group.

[Bug 1575386] Re: Proxy issue with 16.04

2016-04-30 Thread Stéphane Graber
Kinda hard to tell what's going on exactly, I can think of one of two things:
 - You didn't run "lxd init" or "dpkg-reconfigure lxd" and your lxdbr0 bridge
doesn't provide the containers with an IP address. Though I believe Juju is
supposed to detect this case and refuse to run.
 - Your container has working networking but didn't get the proxy setting. I
seem to remember you mentioning that you set the environment.http_proxy and
environment.https_proxy keys, note that those DO NOT apply for things using ssh
to enter the container, such as Juju. That's because the init systems do not
propagate the environment they receive down to their children... LXD works
around that by manually re-setting those keys on "lxc exec" but that won't do
you any good when sshing into the container.

There may be a way to tell Juju about the proxy, if not, you may be able
to tell cloud-init about it by setting the "user.vendor-data" key in a
profile Juju uses (most likely the "default" profile).
