[Bug 1582529] [NEW] Add a more complete reinstallation feature

2016-05-16 Thread ipatrol
Public bug reported:

I'd like to add a suggestion/wishlist item: add a "Complete Reinstall"
option to Synaptic that runs purge and then install on the backend to
completely reset the package. This is useful for cases where a
configuration error has left the package in an unusable state, without
having to manually track down all the configuration files that may be
relevant.

[Bug 1582517] [NEW] Cannot change system language

2016-05-16 Thread bryan paradis
Public bug reported:

System: Dell E6140 i7-620M & Nvidia NVS3100
Ubuntu: 16.04
Kernel: Linux bryan-Latitude-E6410 4.4.0-22-generic #40-Ubuntu SMP Thu May 12
22:03:46 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Updates: Fully updated as of May 16, 2016

Procedure:
--
1) Open Language Support
2) Add Japanese Language Support by entering Install/Remove Languages and
choosing Japanese from the list
3) Drag Japanese to the top of the ordered list in the main window of Language
Support
4) Press Apply System-Wide
5) Logout
6) Login

Expected Outcome:
-
System is now in Japanese

Observed Outcome:
-
System is still in English
Language Support reverted to showing Japanese at the bottom of the ordered list
An error is printed to stderr if ran manually. See below in the description

Description:

Fairly fresh 16.04 Ubuntu install. I was once able to change my system language
between English, French, Esperanto and Japanese. Now I am unable to change to
any of them. I have been troubleshooting the issue. Things that I have tried:

1) Creating a new user. Also fails.
2) Purging and reinstalling language-selector-gnome and language-selector-common
3) Purging and reinstalling language-selector-gnome, language-selector-common,
fontconfig and fontconfig-config
4) Purging language-selector-gnome, language-selector-common, fontconfig,
fontconfig-config and all japanese language packs
5) Removing all language packs from Language Support GUI (aka
language-selector-gnome)

I am now looking into the problem itself. When running the Language
Support GUI manually from the terminal via python3 /usr/bin/gnome-
language-selector I get the following error:

---

---

I have also taken a strace of this as well via strace -F -tt -s 255 -o
ls.strace python3 /usr/bin/gnome-language-selector and will attach it to
this issue as well as my current dpkg.

[Bug 1582510] [NEW] notifier is very annoying

2016-05-16 Thread Seth Arnold
Public bug reported:

My update notifier keeps popping up often, once an hour or so, and it
pulses every five seconds for thirty seconds or something. It's insanely
annoying, and worse yet, wrong:

$ sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade
[sudo] password for sarnold:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

That was seconds after the update notifier finally went away.

I don't recall it being this annoying on 14.04 LTS.

Thanks

[Bug 1512031] Re: Version 1.3.3 under Lubuntu 15.10 does not respect window button placement

2016-05-16 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
@Sean Davis (bluesabre)
Thank you for your reply - I didn't see it until today.

I did not find the config file, but when I did a search, I came across one of
your replies
to another bug that stated "Catfish creates this file when you change the
settings in the application.", so I clicked on "Hidden Files" and on "Sidebar",
and the file was created.
I changed the option as you said, and after two tries (must have goofed
something up...) it worked.

Thank you again.

I am going to try and see if the same technique works for eog, which
does exactly the same thing with the window controls...

[Might I suggest that it become one of the Settings and/or a command-
line option?]

Looks the above issue is caused by passing 'jiffies' to mod_timer,
and 'ops->cur_blink_jiffies' is observed as zero in cursor_timer_handler()
when the issue happened.

The following patch(workaround) can make the issue disappeared:

Grateful thanks to Valentin Crone for the workaround. I ran alsamixer in

Multichannel by up-arrowing, and now my sound works. I doubt whether
this would ever occur to the non-technical user! It deserves to be more
widely known.

[Bug 1575437] Re: Asus ZenBook UX501VW frequently hangs during boot under Ubuntu 16.04

2016-05-16 Thread Adric Norris
For what it's worth, the 4.6.0 kernel from appears to work perfectly in
conjunction with the "nouveau.modeset=0" boot parameter. I haven't
encountered any bootup hangs with this combination, no issues with the
fan, nor any apparent loss of functionality. [NOTE: I have not re-tested
any of the previous kernels with this parameter]

For the time being I've simply added the setting to /etc/default/grub
(see below), followed by running "sudo update-grub".

$ grep nouveau /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nouveau.modeset=0 quiet splash"

I'll let you know if any side effects arise, but I've rebooted about 6-8
times so far and everything appears to be rock solid. :)

[Bug 1532226] Re: No menu bar in gtk apps on fresh boot

2016-05-16 Thread Carlos Sevcik
"Same problem in Ubuntu 16.04, the weird thing is than in my Workstation
this bug is present but not in my laptop."

I fully confirm this, only in my workstation, not in any of my 2
ultrabooks or my laptop. It happened after upgrading from 15.10 to
16.04. The applications I notice without menus either on the window or
the toolbar are nautilus and gedid.

Its a pain in the neck!

[Bug 1532226] Re: No menu bar in gtk apps on fresh boot

2016-05-16 Thread Darrell Kitchen
I have two computers running Ubuntu 16.04. One is an upgrade, the other
is a clean install. On the clean install the menus do not show up on any
of my windows every time I reboot my machine, even with the option
checked in Settings:Appearance:Behavior:Show the menus for a window

However, I have found a temporary workaround for this, but I had to put it in
my Startup Applications. I created a new startup program with the following
parameters:
Name: Reload Unity
Command: unity
Comment: Unity has windowing menu problems so it needs to be reloaded after
bootup

Now when I reboot, I have all my window menus.

It's either the Startup Application or run terminal every time I reboot
to restart unity. On my other machine, the one that I upgraded 14.04 to
16.04, it happens so rarely I just added a custom launcher to Cairo-Dock
that would reload unity.

[Bug 1170223] Re: backport quantal ec2-api-tools to precise

2016-05-16 Thread Brian O'Rourke
The SOAP API used in this package was deprecated since 2014-02-1 and has
been unsupported for new EC2 users since 2015-12-1. On 2016-06-30 all
existing support for this API will cease (even for prior customers).

Is anyone working on backporting this? If not I will.

[Bug 1564351] Re: Unity8 stuck on hint "Long swipe from the left edge to open the Today scope" and can't close it. Desktop left unusable.

2016-05-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Correct. And I'm not trying to be pedantic but this is confusing people.

The fix landed in lp:unity8 revision 2329 on 15 April. So that's 'Fix
Committed'.

What's wrong is to say 'Fix Released' in Ubuntu, because I just downloaded the
latest unity8 source code for Ubuntu (8.12+16.04.20160401-0ubuntu1):
   https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity8
and the fix is not in 'Ubuntu' yet. Not 'Fix Released'.

Fresh install of 16.04 on hardware that ran 14.04 faultlessly. 14.04 has
sound, 16.04 not. The problem seems not to be at the driver level: the
same drivers (snd_hda_intel, snd_oxygen) are allocated to the same
hardware devices as seen whith lshw -C sound. In the sound settings, the
output devices are Digital Output (S/PDIF), Analogue Output and

[Bug 124440] Re: [enhancement] Ubuntu needs a way to set mouse wheel scrolling speed

2016-05-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I can only guess that the Ubuntu Desktop team has not been motivated to
add such new configuration features because of the pending switch to
Unity8.

The good news is that Unity8 frees us from the link to upstream
Gnome/GTK that Unity7 is subject to. So in theory we will have more
freedom to add custom configuration options more rapidly in future.

That does not however explain or excuse us for failing to add this
feature in the previous 9 years since this bug was logged.

[Bug 1582475] Re: Managing access gets HTTP 500 due to using deprecated option timeout

2016-05-16 Thread Billy Olsen
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

When running the 1.0.4-0ubuntu1 version of swauth with Swift
2.7.0-0ubuntu2~cloud0 (Swift from trusty-mitaka cloud archive) the
server errors out with an error 500 when creating accounts. This
prevents users from being able to create or manage accounts using swauth
  against Mitaka.

- root@juju-swauth-machine-1:~# swauth-add-user -A http://127.0.0.1:8080/auth/
-K swauthkey -a test tester testing

+ root@juju-swauth-machine-1:~# swauth-add-user -A http://127.0.0.1:8080/auth/
-K swauthkey -a test tester testing
Account creation failed: 500 Server Error
User creation failed: 500 Server Error

The upstream Swift release *finally* removed a deprecated timeout
parameter for their custom memcache client 'set' function call in
https://review.openstack.org/#/c/257065/ in order to maintain api
compatible with the official python-memcache client.

The minimal fix for this bug is to backport commit c44b5b6 [1], which
adds a test to determine if the version of swift has the time option or
not. This commit has been removed in the latest version of swauth
because swift/swauth no longer support clients < Juno, which would mean
they all have the time parameter rather than the timeout parameter. The
removal of that code caused this bug to manifest itself.

  [1]

https://github.com/openstack/swauth/commit/c44b5b64489c1721cf05992b14e53b0c8a4e325e

-
  [Test Case]

  1. Deploy swift-proxy and swift storage from the trusty-liberty Ubuntu Cloud
Archive.
  2. Deploy the swauth middleware (apt-get install swauth).
  3. Configure swauth following the instructions at
http://swauth.readthedocs.io/en/latest/
  4. Create test user:
- swauth-add-user -A http[s]://:/auth/ -K swauthkey -a test
tester testing
+  swauth-add-user -A http[s]://:/auth/ -K swauthkey -a test
tester testing
  5. Ensure it works:
- swift -A http[s]://:/auth/v1.0 -U test:tester -K testing
stat -v
-
+  swift -A http[s]://:/auth/v1.0 -U test:tester -K testing
stat -v

  [Regression Potential]

The cherry-pick of the fix should be fairly safe as the code dates to
April 2013. That was, however, on a different version of the swauth
code. An error in this code path would prevent servers from being able
to use Swift itself as a wsgi middleware auth plugin.

-
  [Other Info]

Upstream version 1.1.0 was recently released (after having been defunct
since version 1.0.8 for 3 years) with the Mitaka version of OpenStack
under the big tent model. The 1.1.0 version was recently synced from
debian unstable into yakkety. There's a fair number of changes between
1.0.4 and 1.1.0 that I think warrants more testing and verification
- against the trusty-mitaka cloud-archive.
+ against the trusty-mitaka cloud-archive. However, the minimally invasive
+ patch will enable this to work across versions providing sooner relief
+ to any users encountering this issue.

[Bug 124440] Re: [enhancement] Ubuntu needs a way to set mouse wheel scrolling speed

2016-05-16 Thread Dirk Mcbratney
We just need a proper mouse settings tool. In Windows, I can reassign
buttons freely on my seven-button mouse through the GUI. A third-party
GUI from Logitech, but a GUI nonetheless. In Ubuntu, I have to run an
xinput script (manually, since Gnome's hotplug command line in dconf no
longer works) to reassign everything and can't even assign the wheel
tilt to back/forward doing that (changing the button map gets me two
backs or forwards each click and still scrolls at the same time.)

But a simple scroll speed slider in Mouse and Touchpad would certainly
have been a lot nicer than having to add another line to the script.

[Bug 1580434] Re: kernel 4.2.0-36 causes unity to break on 15.10

2016-05-16 Thread Bindul Bhowmik
@jsalisbury,

Verified on
4.2.8-040208ckt9-generic #201604291531 SMP Fri Apr 29 19:33:11 UTC 2016

The display issue reported in this bug is resolved.

I did notice a shared clipboard issue (but that may be related to me
needing to re-build the vbox guest additions on the new kernel).
