I have the same problem with Mint 18 Sarah, based on Ubuntu 16.04 and Nvidia
361.42.
The logo is initially displayed, but when the animation for the "dots" starts,
the logo disappears and then only the dots are displayed.
BTW: I had to update grub settings with this:

Exactly the same under Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 3.0.7 ; with Nemo File
Manager pull-down menu: when choosing the Encrypt… option your're asked
to choose the key to be used but then nothing happens, the file is not

I confirm that upgrade process (from 14.04 to 16.04) crashed on my
laptop LENOVO G410 like Pilot6 said.
I also booted with livecd 16.04, then chrooted to the system. In my case I did

Problem may have been fixed in new upgrades.
Several packages have been upgraded by Ubuntu since reporting bug - a dpkg.log
list is attached. Also removed xserver-xorg-video-intel as Ubuntu recommend not
to use it for newer PCs. System has now been stable for a day, even with 2 USB
mice.

I solved to problem by changing my sound card option in the BIOS. There
I find my front panel is using 'HD'. I change it to 'AC97' and after
rebooting everything goes fine.
