[Bug 1628687] Re: Assertion failure when PID 1 receives a zero-length message over notify socket

2016-10-05 Thread Martin Pitt
I verified that with the -proposed version you cannot create orphaned
notify FDs any more in pid 1 using the test case I just added.

** Description changed:

  Environment:

  Xenial 16.04.1
  Amd64

  Description.

Systemd fails an assertion in manager_invoke_notify_message when a zero-
length message is received over /run/systemd/notify. This allows a local
user to perform a denial-of-service attack against PID 1.

  How to trigger the bug:

  $ while true; do NOTIFY_SOCKET=/run/systemd/notify systemd-notify "";
  done

The following entries are written into /var/log/syslog, at this point
  systemd is crashed.

Sep 28 20:57:20 ubuntu systemd[1]: Started User Manager for UID 1000.
  Sep 28 20:57:28 ubuntu systemd[1]: Assertion 'n > 0' failed at

  Sep 28 20:57:29 ubuntu systemd[1]: Caught , dumped core as pid 1307.

+ The original USN/security fix in
+ https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/229-4ubuntu10 introduced

[Bug 1627641] Re: Backport netplan to xenial

2016-10-05 Thread Martin Pitt
systemd's and netplan's tests now work:

http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/proposed-migration/xenial/update_excuses.html#systemd

http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/proposed-migration/xenial/update_excuses.html#nplan

nplan's tests still show a race condition on ppc64el, but this isn't a
regression.

network-manager's tests also all work:

http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/proposed-migration/xenial/update_excuses.html#network-manager

I ran the above test cases on a 16.04.1 desktop (--print-config is
identical, verifying existing connections still work), and NM still
generally works.

[Bug 1630857] Re: Dell Precision Trackpoint not working after suspend

2016-10-05 Thread AceLan Kao
This issue could be fixed by this commit

commit 04fd4cb0b098789725d04e9d4a7e7dda373b1121
Author: Kai-Heng Feng
Date: Mon Sep 19 15:41:39 2016 +0800

HID: alps: fix stick device not working after resume

The stick device does not work after resume, add U1_SP_ABS_MODE flag can
make the device work after resume.

This has been discovered by pure guesswork, based on how the existing code
uses
U1_TP_ABS_MODE flag on both initialization and resume.

I also tested the the patch on an ALPS touchpad without stick device, did
not
notice any side effect on suspend/resume, so I made the U1_SP_ABS_MODE flag
mandatory.

[Bug 1630860] [NEW] [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH, playback] Playback problem

2016-10-05 Thread wjl
Public bug reported:

Lenovo Thinkpad P50 with docking station

Issues: Headphone jack on station not detected; no sound (works without docking
station)
Issues: Sound via HDMI on station not detected; no sound (works without docking
station)

Since all outputs are routed via the Thunderbolt chip, my guess is that
it's related to the pin setup (lenovo-dock) in Alsa. Without the dock,
everything works, headphone/mic jack on the P50 itself is hotplug
(switches from speaker to headphones right away).

Screenshots (with and without docking station) attached.

There was no increase in drive space used after the second night

works :-)

[Bug 1630789] Re: normal users can't run snaps inside of LXD containers

2016-10-05 Thread Tyler Hicks
I made an unfortunate typo in the following sentence found in comment
#4:

This explains the AppArmor denial from comment #3 containing
"fsuid=296608 ouid=0". The setuid-container-root snap-confine task is
correctly running as fsuid 296608 (container_ns root) but the mountinfo
inode is correctly assigned uid 0 (init_ns root).

It should have read:

correctly running as fsuid 296608 (container_ns root) but the mountinfo

[Bug 1630837] [NEW] mpt2sas aborts ATA pass through security erase command

2016-10-05 Thread igor
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I think I have encountered an issue in the mpt3sas Linux driver. I am using
Lubuntu 16.04, kernel version 4.4. I have a SATA drive connected to a LSI
9211-8i controller, and I am trying to issue a security erase command to the
drive using the hdparm utility v9.48 and it fails.
It seems that the driver thinks that the command got stuck and tries to abort
it before it completes. The security erase ATA command needs a large timeout
that can be as much as several hours.

Below is the trace from hdparm:

2016-10-05 Thread James Troup
Egmont Koblinger writes:

> Double clicking, by design, is _not_ meant to select URLs.

Really? Which design is that?

And regardless of whether or not double click is meant to select URLs,
it's a literal fact that it did in fact (largely) select URLs for many
years.

> So, guys, there's nothing to see here. Please move on.

You're obviously welcome to your opinion, but it's a little strange to
end 77 lines and 705 words with the claim that there is "nothing to
see here" and a request to "move on".

> This bug should be closed as invalid.

That's your opinion; in my opinion this is a regression in Ubuntu.

Danny: This bug (bug 1415104) was marked as fix released on 2015-02-02.
So if you're still having problems please log a new bug.

I can already tell your problem is that the login hasn't set correct
permissions on /dev/dri/*. This is normal (not a bug) for tty logins,
but should be resolved automatically with graphical logins (lightdm).

Please log a new bug here:

[Bug 1625912] Re: Kernel option usbhid.mousepoll=1 is now ignored

2016-10-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sorry, no I don't recall.

I do however have a second machine running xenial rather than yakkety
that I'm yet to test. So that might help...

Unfortunately I've also changed machines between it last working and
now. So this might be a USB hardware fault but I struggle to see how
that would prevent something as slow as 1000 mouse events per second
from working. So I'm hoping and assuming it's just a kernel regression.

[Bug 1630789] Re: normal users can't run snaps inside of LXD containers

2016-10-05 Thread Tyler Hicks
Problem #3, the final problem, is due to a missing AppArmor rule needed
when the following PR was merged:

  https://github.com/snapcore/snap-confine/pull/145

After fixing the squashfuse mounts, as mentioned in comment #3, and
dropping the "owner" conditional, as mentioned in comment #4 (be sure to
reload the AppArmor profile after that), we see the following:

root@yakkety:~# su - ubuntu -c '/snap/bin/hello-world.env'
cannot change apparmor hat of the support process for mount namespace capture.
errmsg: Permission denied
support process for mount namespace capture exited abnormally

This AppArmor denial is logged:

[14428.623321] audit: type=1400 audit(1475715521.677:546):
apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" namespace="root//lxd-yakkety_" profile="/usr/lib/snapd/snap-confine"
name="/proc/977/attr/current" pid=908 comm="ubuntu-core-lau"
requested_mask="w" denied_mask="w" fsuid=296608 ouid=0

That PR resulted in the following call chain:

  main() -> sc_main() -> sc_create_or_join_ns_group() -> aa_change_hat()

aa_change_hat() must write to /proc/PID/attr/current but that PR didn't
add a rule to allow that file access.

Adding the '@{PROC}/[0-9]*/attr/current w,' rule and reloading the
profile allows us to run the hello-world.env snap command as a regular
user inside of an unprivileged user namespace:

root@yakkety:~# su - ubuntu -c '/snap/bin/hello-world.env'
XDG_SESSION_ID=c13

[Bug 1588637] Re: iwlwifi: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2016-10-05 Thread Valentin Neacsu
I had the same issue as reported here. I noticed at boot that the driver
was failing to load its primary firmware choice, falling back to a
different version:

[3.538299] iwlwifi :04:00.0: Direct firmware load for
iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode failed with error -2
[3.541299] iwlwifi :04:00.0: loaded firmware version 16.242414.0
op_mode iwlmvm

I checked /lib/firmware and the highest version I had there was
iwlwifi-7260-16.ucode, which corresponds to 16.242414.0 in the logs
above. I decided to rename iwlwifi-7260-16.ucode to prevent it from
being loaded, as this would allow the driver to fall back onto the next
best firmware file, iwlwifi-7260-13.ucode. This didn't help.

To fix this problem I looked at
https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi#firmware and
downloaded iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode (via git) and copied it into
/lib/firmware, then rebooted. I haven't had any issue since applying
this fix, where previously I'd be getting a firmware crash once every
15-30 minutes.

This new firmware file is not present in linux-firmware 1.157.3 that I have on
my Xenial box, but it does seem to be included in linux-firmware 1.161 as part
of Yakkety, so I suggest downloading and installing it:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/yakkety/amd64/linux-firmware/1.161

It would be great if this update was pushed to Xenial as well in order
to mitigate the issues we're seeing.

Judging by the fact that downgrading to a previous firmware version
didn't seem to help (so the issue was not caused by a firmware upgrade),
but upgrading did help, I suspect that a recent change in iwlwifi or the
kernel is causing the wifi to fail unless it is using the new firmware
in iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode.

[Bug 1621507] Re: initramfs-tools configure_networking() fails to dhcp ipv6 addresses

I have regression-tested MAAS images (supplied by LaMont) containing the
proposed fixes on a set of amd64 virtual machines in an IPv4
environment, and LaMont has carried out testing in an IPv6 environment.

Everything seems to be working, so I'm setting this to verification-

[Bug 1626749] Re: autofs set $USER to "root" instead of current user

2016-10-05 Thread Fabio
I had the same problem after doing a "do-release-upgrade" from 14.04 to 16.04
on October 5, 2016.
The kernel installed by default was 4.4.0-38.

After reading this thread I installed 4.4.0-40.60.
With both 4.4.0-38 and 4.4.0-40.60 I have the problem of $USER being mapped to
root instead of to the current user.

I then installed kernel 4.4.0-36 (which I'm using on other VMs that were
upgraded a few weeks back) and everything worked just fine.

[Bug 1624394] Re: mimedefang: md-mx-ctrl reread does not work

2016-10-05 Thread Mathew Hodson
** Description changed:

- (I'm putting on the SRU template, but regardless of whether this is SRU-
- eligible, fixing this in the development version is obviously the first
- step.)
+ [Impact]

- [Impact]
  This is a regression.

While the main purpose of this is to "reread the filter rules", the
biggest use by frequency is to reload the SpamAssassin rules. In our
production deployment, this happens up to daily--every time their is a
  SpamAssassin rule update released.

Without the ability to use "reread", one must fall back on "restart".
That's a disruptive operation that will result in mail being tempfailed
for a short period of time.

If sysadmins have not noticed this regression, then rule changes are not
getting applied properly, though normal slave turnover eventually brings
  them in.

  [Test Case]
+
  Steps to reproduce:
  sudo md-mx-ctrl reread

  Expected results:
  Forced reread of filter rules

  Actual results:
Cannot destroy and recreate a Perl interpreter safely on this platform.
Filter rules will NOT be reread.

  [Regression Potential]
- The regression potential is small. The patch changes a ./configure test only.
The only impact on the application code comes from the SAFE_EMBED_PERL #define
being correctly enabled again, which it has been "forever".

This patch has been accepted upstream:

I am running this change in production, as installed from our PPA:
