[Bug 1560804] Re: kscreen reports change of primary screen without apparent reason

2016-10-11 Thread joneall
Same pb with Kubuntu 16.04. Have nvidea card but not using their driver.

A similar (same?) but is reported "resolved fixed" at
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=355928, but there is no indication
of how to get the fix. I did a dist-upgrade yesterday.

[Bug 1632578] [NEW] Add support for KabeLake i219-LOM chips

2016-10-11 Thread Phidias
Public bug reported:

There's a commit add device ids to support new i219 Lan-on-motherboard:

commit deaa1d226af725d4e3a56527cdb506c3c30f9fd0
e1000e: Initial support for KabeLake

[Impact]

Add support for devices [8086:15e3], [8086:15d7], [8086:15d6],
[8086:15d8]. This patch only add device ids so no further regressions
are expected.

[Test]

Though the commit log says it's "Initial support", but it's been
successfully tested on multiple platforms and no further issues are
spotted, so at the moment no further patches are needed.

[Bug 1632575] [NEW] systemd starts two copies of ntp at boot time

2016-10-11 Thread Marius Gedminas
Public bug reported:

My system monitoring check noticed a stale /var/run/ntpd.pid pidfile on
a xenial machine that rebooted at 2 AM after unattended upgrades. ntpd
itself was running, but with a different pid.

Digging through journalctl I can see

As you can see, for some reason systemd starts ntpd twice, so there's a
race to take over the socket, and a race to take over the pidfile.
ntpd[773] gets the socket, ntpd[780] gets the pidfile.

[Bug 1619188] Re: Unattended upgrades can break persistent live media

2016-10-11 Thread sudodus
The tests of Ubuntu Yakkety current daily and the previous daily (dated
20161003) have similar results after the night. The biggest files in the
casper-rw partition are apt cache files, as described in post #29. But
there are also some pyc (python cache?) files and I found even an
executable

/media/ubuntu/casper-rw/upper/usr/sbin/anacron.distrib

but I think this is just keeping the system up to date without
installing updated versions of program packages from the repositories.
See the attached file from the test based on the previous daily (dated
20161003), which would have 'more incentive' to do unattended upgrades,
because more packages have changed is the iso file was created.

So it seems to me that the bug is fixed for Yakkety but not for Xenial.
Do you think so too, Brian?

Great!

> Ditto with libemf-dev.

Yes. Ubuntu provides a libming-dev package (cf.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/yakkety/libming-dev). I don't know what it
takes to get an Ubuntu package into Debian so I'm hoping you do. For
libemf-dev you might want to start with my package, which you can
download from my pakin/other PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~pakin/+archive/ubuntu/other). I just now
updated this to libEMF 1.0.8.

> Just uploaded version with pptx support enabled, 3.70-3.

> If anyone tests it, I'd appreciate that, since I don't use pptx files.

I just downloaded this from
https://packages.debian.org/unstable/graphics/pstoedit -- is that the
right source? -- but don't see pptx support. "pstoedit -f pptx
myfile.pdf myfile.pptx" aborts with "Unsupported output format pptx".

You can open pptx files with LibreOffice. That should work reasonably
well on pstoedit output.

[Bug 1631988] Re: Web browser didn't appear when 'Report a problem...' asked if I could add more info to a bug report that would come up in a web browser window

2016-10-11 Thread Ads20000
I searched for Checkbox in the Dash and clicked on it when it came up :)
It might be more helpful to run it in Terminal actually though I haven't tried
this. On a 16.10 install the command is `qmlscene
--settings=/usr/share/checkbox-converged/settings.json $@
/usr/share/checkbox-converged/checkbox-touch.qml` according to Main Menu
(Alacarte). I might try it in a live session later, if you don't get round to
it, to see if we get any useful messages from Terminal.

[Bug 1632563] [NEW] Debian logos on Install Alongside screen with Ubuntu GNOME 16.10

2016-10-11 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Today's release candidate of Ubuntu GNOME 16.10

I tested installing alongside an earlier install of Ubuntu GNOME 16.10
Beta.

On the Install Alongside screen, the Debian logo is shown. Either the
Ubuntu logo or the GNOME logo should be shown but not the Debian logo.

Ubuntu GNOME uses the adwaita-icon-theme by default which does not
provide a Ubuntu logo. I think gnome-icon-theme does and Ubuntu GNOME
16.10 includes gnome-icon-theme (but 17.04 might not). It looks like
/usr/share/icons/Adwaita/index.theme does not Inherits=gnome set.

[Bug 1631474] Re: No networking with initramfs-tools 0.122ubuntu8.3 and ip=dhcp boot option

2016-10-11 Thread gregory
I also have had four computers in the last 2 days show this bug.

I reinstalled the OS in those cases, if I find the bug again, I'll test
the PPA.

Thanks for finding a fix!

To Archive Admins, the Budgie Remix intends to release their 16.10

it's ok for this package to be uploaded into yakkety now - that it won't
mess up their release testing.

I don't know whether this will get accepted for yakkety since it's
awfully late but maybe.

[Bug 1632165] Re: modesetting driver unbearably slow on intel graphics

2016-10-11 Thread Michael Gratton
The last two logs are for my user session using modesetting driver and
with the video group and accel config removed. The first with the
session started via lightdm, the second started using gdm3.

On my system, /usr/sbin/gdm3 and gdm-session-worker runs as root, while
the rest of the GDM processes run as user GDM. The greeter is run in a
Wayland session, not an X session.

I don't have Unity installed, sorry. This is a pretty stock Ubuntu GNOME
system.

Not quite. The root cause of these denials is the switch over to
systemd-resolved for name resolution. This is being tracked in bug
#1598759. The kernel is not at fault so I'm marking the linux task as
invalid.

[Bug 1576812] Re: [MIR] ipmitool

2016-10-11 Thread Seth Arnold
On the one hand, ipmi usually works on segregated networks because the
implementation of ipmi on baseband controllers and NICs are usually
pretty poor, so the risks may be limited. On the other hand, the
compilation warnings are telling a story of a project that might have
been Good Enough fifteen years ago, but looks unloved today.

Ideally we wouldn't promote this to main until someone cleans up the
warnings. The compiler is giving hundreds of concrete suggestions to
improve the code quality.

Thanks

[Bug 1620159] Re: [MIR] snapd-glib

2016-10-11 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed snapd-glib version 0.14-0ubuntu1 as checked into yakkety. This
shouldn't be considered a full security audit; in fact, it was entirely
too hasty due to external time pressures.

Most calls appeared to check for error returns. I found a few instances
that didn't:

- send_request() doesn't check error return from
snapd_auth_data_get_macaroon() but hands the result directly to
g_string_append_printf(); 'Macaroon root="(null)"' is the possible
  outcome. Is this tolerable?

- send_request() doesn't check error return from
snapd_auth_data_get_discharges() but hands the result directly to a
  for loop that will sigsegv

It's an insane pity this handles HTTP directly. Chunked encoding has
been the source of many vulnerabilities. Maybe investigate if a library
such as yahttp or other choices are available to outsource the potential
trouble. This is probably not a big deal here, since the point is to talk
to a more-privileged tool. Still, HTTP is subtle.

I'd like to spend more time reviewing this in the next cycle, but I think
in the meantime we can accept it for yakkety without undue risk.

Security team ACK for promoting snapd-glib to main.

Thanks

[Bug 1598759] Re: AppArmor nameservice abstraction doesn't allow communication with systemd-resolved

2016-10-11 Thread Tyler Hicks
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
+ Processes confined by AppArmor profiles making use of the nameservice
+ AppArmor abstraction are unable to access the systemd-resolved network
+ name resolution service. The nsswitch.conf file shipped in Yakkety puts
+ the nss-resolve plugin to use which talks to systemd-resolved over
+ D-Bus. The D-Bus communication is blocked for the confined processes
+ described above and those processes will fallback to the traditional
+ means of name resolution.
+
+ [ Test Case ]
+
+ * Use ntpd to test:
+ $ sudo apt-get install -y ntp
+ ...
+ $ sudo systemctl stop ntp
+
+ # in another terminal, watch for AppArmor denials
+ $ dmesg -w
+
+ # in the original terminal, start ntp
+ $ sudo systemctl start ntp
+
+ # You'll see a number of denials on the system_bus_socket file:
+ audit: type=1400 audit(1476240762.854:35): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="connect" profile="/usr/sbin/ntpd" name="/run/dbus/system_bus_socket"
pid=3867 comm="ntpd" requested_mask="wr" denied_mask="wr" fsuid=126 ouid=0
+
+ * Use tcpdump to test:
+
+# Capture traffic on whichever network interface you're currently using
+$ sudo tcpdump -i eth0
+
+# Look in /var/log/syslog for denials on the system_bus_socket file:
+audit: type=1400 audit(1476240896.021:40): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="connect" profile="/usr/sbin/tcpdump"
name="/run/dbus/system_bus_socket" pid=4106 comm="tcpdump" requested_mask="wr"
denied_mask="wr" fsuid=0 ouid=0
+
+ In both situations, ntpd and tcpdump will seemingly work as expected due
+ to the name resolution fallback configured in nsswitch.conf. However,
+ neither confined process will be using systemd-resolved for name
+ resolution.
+
+ [ Regression Potential ]
+
+ This fix will allow ntp, tcpdump, cupsd, dhclient, and other confined-
+ by-default programs to start using systemd-resolved. There is some
+ potential for regression since those applications have not been
+ previously using systemd-resolved.
+
+ [ Original bug description ]
+
On this plain install of Xenial apparmor complains about ntpd:

  [ 19.379152] audit: type=1400 audit(1467623330.386:27): apparmor="DENIED"

[Bug 1632399] Re: AppArmor confinement change in 4.8 and newer kernels causes segfault inside LXD containers

2016-10-11 Thread Tyler Hicks
** Description changed:

- Running tcpdump inside of a LXD container results in tcpdump immediately

[Bug 1632535] [NEW] Update webkitgtk to 2.14.1 in yakkety

2016-10-11 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Impact
==
webkit2gtk 2.14.1 is a new bugfix release in the stable 2.14 series

https://webkitgtk.org/2016/10/11/webkitgtk2.14.1-released.html

Fixes crash bug 1631682 in epiphany and evolution

New webkit2gtk releases are often security updates. It would be good for
the latest 2.14 to get more real testing in Ubuntu 16.10 before it gets
backported to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS as a security update. There is no
Security Advisory for 2.14 currently, but note that webkitgtk does not
issue security advisories until the corresponding OS X Safari update is
released.

https://webkitgtk.org/security.html

Test built on all regular PPA architectures:
https://launchpad.net/~jbicha/+archive/ubuntu/arch/+packages

(Please don't permanently add that PPA since I use it for packaging
experiments)

Test Case
=
- Run epiphany-browser, evolution and yelp since those apps currently use
webkitgtk's unstable DOM API
- Run the ubiquity slideshow. Instructions for doing this without needing to
run the installer are at

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/webkit2gtk/+bug/1618956/comments/4

Regression Potential

Low to Moderate. The diff is too large to be able to review very easily.
A few months ago, a stable webkit2gtk update (2.12.4, fixed in 2.12.5) broke
the ubiquity slideshow ( bug 1618956 ). This risk is mitigated because we are
specifically testing for that.

More info,
Fixed boot problem, you need to go to recovery and go to software and
updates/use nvidia video and intel cpu driver. Basically similar vein to
noveaumodset=0. I have also removed the archlinux sound codes because I had
worse audio whitenoise at regular bootup and when I did try to listen to
something it didn't work. Hopes this helps someone. Cheers

[Bug 1632051] Re: package kismet 2013.03.R1b-3build1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 6

2016-10-11 Thread Nick Andrik
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1172993 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1172993

Hi,

If you see in the log there is this message:
user 'JG' does not exist

Could you please specify a valid username when it requests for the users in the
kismet group?
An easy solution is to uninstall and install kismet again.

This issue has been fixed in the newest version of kismet.
It is a duplicate of a previously reported bug and I'm marking it as such.
Please comment here if you need additional help

Kindest regards,
Nick

[Bug 1631883] Re: aaaa

2016-10-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 1575437] Re: Asus ZenBook UX501VW frequently hangs during boot under Ubuntu 16.04

2016-10-11 Thread chris
noveau modset and apci=! didn't work, and my trackpad didn't work at regular
boots (the 10% of the time I got it). recovery mode I have full use.
It may also be because I have two boot devices after boot-repair, ubuntu and
windows, but I am not sure right now.

[Bug 1575437] Re: Asus ZenBook UX501VW frequently hangs during boot under Ubuntu 16.04

2016-10-11 Thread chris
Hello all,
I have been working on this for two days now, and it seems that i slowly have
made things worse as time has gone on. I had all of the problems stated (boot
hang, blaring fan, white noise), but have found solutions to a few of them, and
have information that could help pinpoint the others.

1. go to advance boot
2. linux 4.4 recovery works and does not have blaring fan.
2.5 linux 4.4 regular and upstart do not work
3. I have followed the instructions for archlinux which has solved the problem
of the white noise in the earphones.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ASUS_Zenbook_Pro_UX501

boot/fan:
After trying everything from reinstalling to boot-repair to fsck and all of the
bios options (except flashing the bios, which I am possibly going to do a
reinstall and flash the bios).

anyone have any more information, would be greatly obliged!
