[Bug 1649077] Re: [regression] OSK appears blank and/or flickers in the lock screen

2016-12-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Actually this might be Mir's fault still. The first time the bug was
noticed was when we introduced NBS and the fix back then was to back out
NBS I think. But now I'm actually looking at the NBS code and it seems
like it might be dropping the newest frame from the client without any
guarantee the client (OSK) will ever produce a new one. Not totally
sure, but this might be Mir's fault.

[Bug 1649728] Re: package udev 204-5ubuntu20.20 failed to install/upgrade: pre-dependency problem - not installing udev

** Description changed:

Upgrading Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS using do-release-upgrade.
Normal update/upgrade without problems/stable within release 12, including
reboot.

During the upgrade I noticed "xenial" in the path-names, assuming the
  target would be 16.04 LTS.

But after 15min I noticed the following:

  -

Given the URL in the text, I landed here.

At the next choice, I selected to continue, effectively ignoring more
  problems with udev ?

I tried to recover by "apt-get -f install", later "apt full-upgrade" and it
looked ok.
Unfortunately after reboot the server responded only to ping, as far as I
could see nothing else.

I am working remotely with the server of my client, they start working
  at 08:00 CET.

Going for a short sleep now, as I'm afraid having to travel to the
  client and continue on-site.

If you can provide me with hits, I would apreciate that a lot.

  Thanks in advance,

[Bug 1646222] Re: calculation of needed free space in /boot is inaccurate and causes refusal to upgrade

2016-12-21 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

- I have a /boot partition which is sized just right to accommodate 3
- kernels, plus a little bit of overhead.
+ [SRU Justification]
+ In some configurations, update-manager will refuse to upgrade kernel
packages, citing lack of space in /boot even though there is enough space in
/boot and if the upgrade is done with 'apt dist-upgrade', it succeeds.
Affected users may as a result fail to have security updates applied to their
system, unless they know how to run apt from the commandline or have unattended
upgrades enabled.
+
+ [Test case]
+ 1. Check the space currently used on /boot with du -sh.
+ 2. Create a partition 120MB larger than the space used on /boot.
+ 3. Copy the contents of your /boot directory into this partition.
+ 4. Mount this partition as /boot.
+ 5. Configure your system so that a newer kernel ABI is available (e.g., by
enabling -proposed; or by waiting for the next kernel update to publish; or by
downgrading the kernel using apt-get and rebooting).
+ 6. Run update-manager.
+ 7. Verify that update-manager refuses to upgrade, citing a lack of space in
/boot.
+ 8. Install python3-distupgrade and ubuntu-release-upgrader-core from
-proposed.
+ 9. Re-run update-manager.
+ 10. Verify that update-manager proceeds with the upgrade, and that the
upgrade succeeds, with no failure due to lack of disk space on /boot.
+ 11. Repeat steps 2-9 with a partition that is only 60MB larger than the space
used on /boot.
+ 12. Verify that update-manager still refuses to proceed with the upgrade,
with the packages from -proposed.
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ Since this changes the limit at which update-manager refuses to upgrade due
to lack of free space, if the new calculation of the minimum required free
space is too low, users may see update-manager proceed with the upgrade, then
fail at the dpkg stage, requiring manual recovery.
+
+ [Original report]
+ I have a /boot partition which is sized just right to accommodate 3 kernels,
plus a little bit of overhead.

  $ df -h /boot/
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
  /dev/sda5 280M 144M 118M 56% /boot
  $

Previously, update-manager had no problem letting me upgrade kernels.
With the latest kernel update in 16.10, I got an error message that I
needed more free space on this filesystem.

After bypassing update-manager with 'sudo apt dist-upgrade', the
  filesystem's usage looks like this:

  $ df -h /boot/
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
  /dev/sda5 280M 206M 56M 79% /boot
  $

So update-manager is getting the disk usage requirement for /boot off by
a factor of 2 (at least? I didn't save the error message from the
  dialog).

It's better to refuse to upgrade than to fail mid-upgrade due to disk
space, but not if that means getting stuck forever with an old kernel
  unnecessarily.

[Bug 1651944] [NEW] Kernel panic when we call pipework to setup virtual network for docker containers

2016-12-21 Thread Peng
Public bug reported:

I found a kernel panic issue when I was using pipework to config the
network of a docker container on an x86 board with all-snap image. The
issue is related to the auditing module of Linux kernel. So it should be
an issue of pc-kernel-snap.

I created a simple test snap to reproduce the issue and upload it to github.
https://github.com/pliu6/docker-snap-test

Software environment to reproduce the bug:
#snap list
Name Version Rev Developer Notes
core 16.04.1 714 canonical -
docker 1.11.2-956 canonical devmode
dockertest 0.0.1 x12 devmode
pc 16.04-0.8 9canonical -

[Bug 1592465] Re: [MIR] swift-plugin-s3

2016-12-21 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed swift-plugin-s3 version 1.11-2 as checked into zesty. This
shouldn't be considered a security audit but rather a quick gauge of
maintainability.

All the files appear to be python2.7, even though 'six' is used.

- CVE-2015-8466 -- they were a little shaky on the process since they're
not getting official OpenStack security support, but the patch is
impressive, with ~90kb of fixes to test cases.

- swift-plugin-s3 is a middleware layer that interprets s3 requests and
translates them to swift requests. It's a fairly complicated glue layer
between two already complicated APIs, that runs on top of HTTP.

- Build-Depends: debhelper, dh-python, openstack-pkg-tools, python-all,
  python-pbr, python-setuptools, python-sphinx, python-boto,
  python-coverage, python-fixtures, python-hacking
  python-lxml, python-mock, python-nose, python-nose-exclude,
  python-openstack.nose-plugin, python-openstackclient, python-requests,
  python-requests-mock, python-six, python-swift

- Uses md5, sha256 from hashlib, does not itself provide cryptography
- Uses wsgi
- Does not appear to daemonize outside of tests
- pre/post inst/rm automatically added by dh_python2
- No init scripts
- No dbus service
- No setuid or setgid executables
- No binaries in PATH
- No sudo fragments
- No udev rules
- Huge test suite run during the build (seriously, it's impressive;
  79%-100% test 'coverage' per file using line-based coverage counting;
roughly three times as many lines of code in the tests than the bulk of
  the program).
- No cronjobs
- Build log is mostly boilerplate and test output

- No subprocesses spawned
- No file management
- Simple logging
- No environment variables used outside of the tests
- No privileged syscalls used
- The only cryptography used is hash functions
- I believe the only networking is done via wsgi
- As a middleware layer it's hard to follow the full path of network
packet inputs; code looked careful but not paranoid.
- No use of /tmp
- No WebKit
- No javascript
- No PolicyKit

This is complicated code. We'd need upstream's help to support this
package. That said, it looked well written, the test suite's size is
impressive, and the one CVE in their history appeared to be handled well
despite an uncertain start.

Here's the only note I took while reading:

- _validate_expire_param() hard-codes a year-2038 bug into the program

Security team ACK for promoting swift-plugin-s3 to main.

Thanks

[Bug 1069856] Re: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for . Check your device.map.

2016-12-21 Thread Jason Straight
Recently encountered this, and I turned up this page while searching for
solutions, and I hate to turn this into a "forum" post but I wanted to
leave this here for anyone else beating their head against the wall over
this.

On my afflicted system one of the partitions that was part of my btrfs
raid 1 array did not have a type. fdisk, changed the type to Linux and
grub was happy.

[Bug 1530405] Re: NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [kerneloops:814]

Thank you very much, I can shutdown normally now. And my system was
already installing the latest packages before blacklisting nouveau, so
it should be safe to update.

Nonetheless, the shutdown problem should be related to nouveau.

[Bug 1651294] Re: [Lenovo IdeaCentre A540] Doesn't poweroff on shutdown

2016-12-21 Thread Nicolas K
Christopher, that issue already existed in kernel 4.2 ; sorry for my
previous misleading comment.

I did install and boot several older kernels (namely, mainlines 4.3, 4.2, 4.0,
3.19 and 3.13) , but had the same problem with all of them.
On older kernels, though, I get an error message similar to this at shutdown:
32.250495] usb 3-1: device not accepting address 3, error -110
42.823143] usb 3-1: device not accepting address 4, error -110

Back to kernel 4.9, looking at dmesg in detail (see attachment), I
noticed the following

(1) and (3) let me think that this might be a firmware problem (but then, how
come the same hardware and BIOS work properly with Windows? could it related to
enabling/disabling UEFI, e.g., "csm mode" in Lenovo verbiage ?)

(2), (4) and (5) are symptoms of ACPI failure; I found several old tickets
where the same error appears, such as:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/668148
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+bug/551654
http://askubuntu.com/questions/624447/cannot-boot-14-04-ubuntu
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43229

(6) I don't know what GHES and HEST mean, some other tickets have been opened
and it looks like this is not a bug, but a feature:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1170298
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1091032

Do you need other information ?
Can I help in some way ?

[Bug 1577074] Re: [HP Pavilion 15] Intermittent black screens

2016-12-21 Thread James Funk
Done, please note that in the bug report i am using the crimson (fglrx)
driver and kubuntu 15.10, because this is the only way that i can use my
computer. If i try to upgrade to 16.04 and AMDGPU, my computer is
unusable because of the bug. But maybe my hardware information helps.

[Bug 1651922] [NEW] font cache broken after system upgrade (missing .dpkg-tmp files)

2016-12-21 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded from 16.10 to 17.04 Alpha. I noticed that
https://git.gnome.org/ was nearly unusuable with Firefox (although it
displayed ok in Epiphany and Chromium). Well that website use Cantarell
as its font.

I tried opening gnome-font-viewer but got no content. When I ran gnome-
font-viewer from the command line, I got this output:

** (gnome-font-viewer): WARNING **: Can't get font name: Error opening
file /usr/share/fonts/opentype/cantarell/Cantarell-Regular.otf.dpkg-tmp:
No such file or directory

** (gnome-font-viewer): WARNING **: Can't get font name: Error opening file

** (gnome-font-viewer): WARNING **: Can't get font name: Error opening file

directory

** (gnome-font-viewer): WARNING **: Can't get font name: Error opening file

file or directory

** (gnome-font-viewer): WARNING **: Can't get font name: Error opening file
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont/FreeMono.ttf.dpkg-tmp: No such file or
directory

** (gnome-font-viewer): WARNING **: Can't get font name: Error opening file
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/lao/Phetsarath_OT.ttf.dpkg-tmp: No such file or
directory

** (gnome-font-viewer): WARNING **: Can't get font name: Error opening file
/usr/share/fonts/opentype/cantarell/Cantarell-Oblique.otf.dpkg-tmp: No such
file or directory

** (gnome-font-viewer): WARNING **: Can't get font name: Error opening file
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont/FreeMonoBoldOblique.ttf.dpkg-tmp: No such
file or directory

So then I ran sudo fc-cache -f
Closed Firefox and re-opened it and git.gnome.org looks normal again.
gnome-font-viewer is also working again.

[Bug 1577074] Re: [HP Pavilion 15] Intermittent black screens with Crimson 15.12 driver

2016-12-21 Thread James Funk
summary:- AMDGPU driver problems on "Carrizo" APU
+ [HP Pavilion 15] Intermittent black screens with Crimson 15.12 driver
tags: added: needs-apport-collect needs-debug-logs needs-full-computer-model

The above information is not correct, the bug is in AMDGPU, not the
crimson driver.

The submitter writes "I updated to Kubuntu 16.04 (from Kubuntu 15.10 -
that was using the Linux Crimson 15.12 driver) a couple days ago on my
notebook (HP Pavilion, A10-8700P APU), and ever since I've been having
random black screens."

He is saying he updated from 15.10 that was using the Crimson driver
(which works and is the only available option for a working display at
the moment), to 16.04, where the Crimson driver support was removed and
AMDGPU is the only option. And that is when the black screens started
happening for me also, and i had to downgrade to 15.10 and back to using
the crimson driver.

My full computer model is: HP Pavilion 15-ab114no 15,6"

|As it happens, I just re-started testing new kernels yesterday and so
far 4.8.0.32 seems to work, no hangs yet. (Reminder: this used to happen
mostly before login but also sometimes after hours of working). I will
keep on testing and you guys updated.

Yes it's worth getting them involved, although I should point out my own
more recent attempts to get Mir working properly under VMware were
unsuccessful for different reasons (never hit this bug). Either way,
VMware support needs a refresh...

2016-12-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Invalid for the nvidia driver because it's the compiler that's broken.
If not caused by a hardware disk error or such you may want to chase the
bug with gcc, but that would be a lot of work...
