lol ... just happened to me ...
Fortunately, one can switch to console (Ctl-Alt-F1) and apply code of Pavel's
link (post #51), which is roughly what I did to recover, after trying to
install 'nouveau' driver (installation succeeded via apt but system was looping
on login page).

[Bug 1681028] [NEW] glade 3.18.3 (ubuntu 16) huge memory leak

2017-04-07 Thread stef de guy
Public bug reported:

Creating a window, adding some widgets, ie. toggle button, a viewport ..
then for example on the viewport (or even on the main window ) widget, select
'signals' and develop the "GtkWidget>" to show all the signals ...
immediately, the memory usage of the computer starts growing very fast, leading
to an unstable system ( 4GB ram full , starting to swap, after a few minutes,
if you leave glade at this state of displaying the signals listing )
it stops right when minimizing back the "GtkWidget->" signals section.
For what i've been testing, the memory leak happens for every widget's
signals->Gtkwidget-> display.

[Bug 1667158] Re: Regression: Borders of windows and desktop background are displayed badly after suspend/resume

2017-04-07 Thread SunBear
@Pavel Thank you for the reminder. ;)

Yes, I agree with you. Do manual installation if you are prepared to
spend quite a bit of time tinkering about. Else, a user will find
themselves having to go through a steep learning curve about lightdm,
systemd, Xorg, Grub2, kdms and administrator bash commands, and
heartaches if some issues arise after installation. Be Warned. Do
take this route if you need to or are prepared to tinker.

For users who want to avoid any tinkering, it may be better to use the
workarounds until a non-beta driver version get released and the ppa
team updates their driver.

[Bug 1681025] Re: dhclient fails to assign IP address during system boot inspite of valid DHCP Offer when time change is performed by systemd-timesyncd.service

2017-04-07 Thread J.D.
Please find the attached patch service that was used to delay the
network initialization so that it is not affected by the time-change by

solution but demonstrates how equivalent changes can be performed to
arrive at the solution.

[Bug 1681025] [NEW] dhclient fails to assign IP address during system boot inspite of valid DHCP Offer when time change is performed by systemd-timesyncd.service

2017-04-07 Thread J.D.
Public bug reported:

System Information:
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
Release:16.04

Package Information:
network-manager:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1
  Version table:
 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 500

Packages
 1.1.93-0ubuntu4 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages

Expected Behavior:
The system has one ethernet interface ens160 that is expected to be assigned an
IPv4 address using DHCP as part of the bootup process so that services that
depends on presence of IPv4 address do not fail to initialize during the boot
process.

Problem Behavior:
The ethernet interface ens160 was UP but no IPv4 address was assigned inspite
of correct response from the DHCP server, thereby causing the services that
depends on presence of IPv4 address to fail during the boot process.

Problem Details:
The default 16.04.2 LTS server installed in a VMWare virtual machine running on
SuperMicro server using ESXi 6 fails to obtain an IP address from a DHCP server
during system startup when there is a simultaneous time change as evidenced by
"systemd[1]: Time has been changed" entry in syslog. The system successfully
obtains the IP address after significant delay (ranging from 2 - 5 minutes)
after system startup.

Note that the system has open-vmware-tools package and the VMWare tools
settings are set to NOT synchronize the guest time, thereby eliminating
any scope of interference from virtualization host (The host itself is
set to use NTP synchronization and has correct timing).

Wireshark was used to sniff the BOOTP messages. When system is rebooted,
system sends a DHCP Release to the DHCP server. When system starts, it
broadcasts a valid DHCP Discover to network and received a valid DHCP
Offer from the network within 4 secs. Note that a "Time has been
changed" log appears just before dhclient logs "No DHCPOFFERS received"
in syslog. (The time appears to be moved ahead by around 6 mins.)

After about 4 minutes, system broadcasts a valid DHCP Discover to which
DHCP server responds with DHCP Offer, system responds with DHCP Request
and DHCP server responds with DHCP Ack and the system is assigned its IP
address. The dhclient logs in syslog concurs with the wireshark trace:

Apr 6 18:39:05 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: DHCPDISCOVER on ens160 to
255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 3 (xid=0x92322e17)
Apr 6 18:39:08 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: DHCPDISCOVER on ens160 to
255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8 (xid=0x92322e17)
Apr 6 18:39:08 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: DHCPREQUEST of 192.168.1.161 on
ens160 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 (xid=0x172e3292)
Apr 6 18:39:08 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: DHCPOFFER of 192.168.1.161 from
192.168.1.1
Apr 6 18:39:09 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: DHCPACK of 192.168.1.161 from
192.168.1.1
Apr 6 18:39:09 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: bound to 192.168.1.161 -- renewal
in 33171 seconds.

An attempt to release and reacquire the IP address after the system is
up and running always succeeds immediately with the aforesaid "happy"
usecase.

Workaround Attempted:
Turning off systemd-timesyncd.service always allows dhclient to immediately
assign the IP address during the boot process. Turning it on leads to the above
problem usecase with very high probability. Based on this observation, an
assumption can be made that the time synchronization happens to overlap the
DHCP processing performed by dhclient. There is a time-change which causes the
DHCP Offer sent by the DHCP server to be ignored and dhclient to snooze for a
long time before attempting another DHCP Discover message to the server. Under
such circumstances, the services that depend on presence of an IP address fail.

Attempted Workaround:
Above assumption was further used to create a delayNetwork.service patch
one-shot systemd service that causes the networking service to delay
networking.service until time-sync.target is reached by the
systemd-timesyncd.service. Such patch seems to cause dhclient to always assign
IP address during boot process. However, it would be desirable to ensure that
dhclient and/or the networking.service take correct steps to protect itself
against race conditions that may arise due to time changes affected by the
systemd-timesyncd.service. At the very least, possibility of time change during
such critical and vulnerable system component initialization must be minimized
by isolating the time change to occur during a bootup phase when such
components are not being initialized.

[Bug 1632322] Re: Computer never gets to the GDM3 login screen when nvidia- is installed

2017-04-07 Thread Luis Alvarado
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1559576 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1559576

Just tested and on 16.04 and 17.04 installing xserver-xorg-legacy did
nothing. I still get a black screen. What I did was install gnome
desktop (gdm3 package), selected the gdm package instead of lightdm in
the reconfiguration screen and after rebooting the problem started. The
logs say everything is awesome but it's simply not working. If it helps
I have the 378.13 Nvidia drivers, an Nvidia GTX 1080, 64GB Ram, Intel
6700k and Ubuntu 16.04 64 on the first test and then 17.04 on the second
test. Both with the same issue.

@SunBear, I just want to warning everyone, that drivers from the Nvidia
site (*.run files) if you try to install them could brake your system. For
more details see here:

(also it's true for 16.x).

[Bug 1674304] Re: PRIME synchronization not working with xserver-1.19.x

2017-04-07 Thread Rogério Vinhal Nunes
So, I just upgraded to 17.04 with Xorg 1.19.3 and nvidia 375.xx drivers.
By default, Ubuntu installed a modprobe.d file to set drm modeset = 0
for the nvidia kernel module and that seem to prevent Prime
Synchronization from working.

I tried to change the modeset to 1 so I could finally try the
synchronization configuration, but that froze the system hard as long as
lightdm booted. I installed gnome with gdm3 and I could get to gdm3 and
try to login to gnome with no avail. But after a few tries (without
changing anything) it just logged in, but prime synchronization was off
for both the laptop screen as my TV. I did the "modprobe -v nvidia-drm"
to check the modeset and it was 1, but whenever I tried to set the Prime
Synchronization via xrandr, the screen went black for a sec and came
back, but xrandr --verbose still displayed Prime Synchronization off.

Why is that cat /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf with the
"options nvidia_375_drm modeset=0"? Why does changing it to 1 freeze the
whole system thereafter?

2017-04-07 Thread Pinky Brain
Also broken in 1:20170314.1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1.

The old version independent way of fixing this in the 10-flash script
still works by the way.

flashversion=`strings $flashso 2> /dev/null | grep LNX | cut -d ' ' -f
2 | sed -e "s/,/./g"`
CHROMIUM_FLAGS="$CHROMIUM_FLAGS --ppapi-flash-path=$flashso
--ppapi-flash-version=$flashversion"

[Bug 1681016] [NEW] package libpcrecpp0v5:amd64 2:8.38-3.1 failed to install/upgrade: package libpcrecpp0v5:amd64 is already installed and configured

2017-04-07 Thread Omid Vaziri
Public bug reported:

I had started trying to install ElectricSheep using this command:
sudo apt-get install subversion autoconf libtool libgtk2.0-dev libgl1-mesa-dev
libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libswscale-dev liblua5.1-0-dev
libcurl4-openssl-dev libxml2-dev libjpeg8-dev libgtop2-dev libboost-dev
libboost-filesystem-dev libboost-thread-dev libtinyxml-dev freeglut3-dev
glee-dev

Partway through, I cancelled the installation as I'd decided I didn't
want to install it that way, and ran the same program but using sudo
apt-get remove instead. As soon as this completed, it gave me the error
summary. Not sure if critical, or how to fix or if there's anything to
even fix.

[Bug 1667158] Re: Regression: Borders of windows and desktop background are displayed badly after suspend/resume

2017-04-07 Thread SunBear
@MikeGresens Thanks for updating. According to the Nvidia update note on
381.09, it is suppose to fix the badborder issue. However, the ppa
:graphics-drivers/ppa team has not uploaded it yet. To use it, the
appropriate driver has to be manually downloaded (use the hyperlink
provided in the webpage you provided) and installed.

[Bug 1671360] Re: System doesn't boot properly on AMD Ryzen / Gigabyte GA-AB350-gaming-3

2017-04-07 Thread Roland Kaiser
In the meantime, is there any particular reason Ubuntu kernels need to
be shipping with pinctrl-amd built-in?

If not, I suggest building it as a module from now on, so that users
affected by this issue don't have to resort to custom built kernels, but
can instead just blacklist the module.

Note that this issue is present on xenial and yakkety as well, not just
zesty.

[Bug 1667158] Re: Regression: Borders of windows and desktop background are displayed badly after suspend/resume

2017-04-07 Thread SunBear
** Description changed:

- == Update: ==
+ == Update2: ==

nvidia delivered a new driver: 381.09 beta
  https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1002788

  From release notes:

"Fixed a regression that caused corruption in certain applications, such
as window border shadows in Unity, after resuming from suspend."
  (nvidia)

- --
+ == Update1: ==

Nvidia states that the bug will be fixed in the next release:
  https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/990898/linux/suspend-corrupts-
window-manager-after-upgrade-to-378-09/2. However no timeline for the
  next release was mentioned.

Meanwhile workarounds have to be used to alleviate/overcome the bad
window borders and title bar caused by driver version 375.39.

- == Possible workarounds for the time being ==
+ -- Possible workarounds for the time being --

  - Alternative A: Keep using nvidia-375.39 with workarounds.
E.g. kill or replace compiz process. See comments #13 and
#44 given below for implementation details. Beware,
some users found the command killed applications
like Firefox or Thunderbird on resume while others
    did not.
E.g. Use "unity" command (see comments #4 and #23)
E.g. Click an effect in CompizConfig Setting Manager
(CCSM) --> Effects. (see comment $5)
  - Alternative B: Use alternative graphic drivers.
E.g. Install nvidia-340 package if that versions supports
your graphic card: sudo apt install nvidia-340. Or
use Nouveau display driver or other suitable drivers
available in System Settings --> Software & Updates
    --> Additional Drivers.
  - Alternative C: Downgrade to earlier driver versions that worked before
the updgrade occurred. E.g. use nvidia-367 package.
Beware, that this driver version has unfixed security
holes! Downgrading works in Yakkety, possibly also in
Xenial, but likely not in Zesty. Command to downgrade:
   sudo apt install nvidia-367=367.57-0ubuntu3 libcuda1-
   367=367.57-0ubuntu3 nvidia-opencl-icd-367=367.57-0ubuntu3

Original text of this bug report:

My system graphic driver had just updated to 375.39 but Borders of pop-
up windows are displayed badly. This is especially true after waking up
from suspend mode. this driver is buggy. I am using Ubuntu 16.04. Any
way to rectify this display problem?
