It also requires a complete reinstall if your boot partition is too
small (ie. you accepted the defaults with an LVM or encrypted disk
install pre 16.04 release). Machines upgraded from 14.04 will continue
to fail and be directed here.

[Bug 1707831] [NEW] [enhancement] Replace the "Activities" label with the Ubuntu icon/logo/glyph

2017-07-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Public bug reported:

I suggest replacing the "Activities" label with the Ubuntu icon/logo.

"Activities" sounds awkward and misleading. It would be more suitably
vague, and more consistent with the existing Unity7 experience if the
Gnome Shell "Activities" label was replaced by just the Ubuntu logo.

Perhaps even a single glyph:  or 

The mute button on my laptop has a led that changes the color based on

There is a slider for the LED in alsamixer but it doesn't change

[Bug 1707829] [NEW] systemd-resolved crashed with SIGABRT in __epoll_wait_nocancel()

2017-07-31 Thread Eliah Kagan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1605307 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1605307

Public bug reported:

Apport told me systemd-resolved crashed when I logged in to my fully
updated Xubuntu Artful amd64 system. This is the same virtual machine
for which I reported bug 1707792 earlier today; potentially relevant
details about the system installed on this machine may be found in that
bug report.

I suspect this is still bug 1707792 (which is a duplicate of bug
1705870), but this also resembles bug 1605307, which was originally
reported against Yakkety but has since also been tagged Zesty and
Artful. Are these all really the same bug?

After the symbolic retrace and depending on what it shows, I will likely
mark this as a duplicate of something else, if that is not done
automatically.

[Bug 1707816] Bug is not a security issue

2017-07-31 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1686470] Please test proposed package

2017-07-31 Thread Adam Conrad
Hello Dimitri, or anyone else affected,

Accepted unattended-upgrades into zesty-proposed. The package will build
now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unattended-
upgrades/0.93.1ubuntu2.3 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-zesty to verification-done-zesty. If it does not fix
the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag
to verification-failed-zesty. In either case, details of your testing
will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at

advance!

[Bug 1706900] Re: CVE-2016-9877 RabbitMQ authentication vulnerability

2017-07-31 Thread Seth Arnold
Hi Nils,

Ubuntu's security team does not use upstream assessments of
severity when assigning priorities. Our criteria are enumerated at
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-security/ubuntu-cve-tracker/master/view/head:/README#L191
 .

Upstream estimates of severity are usually focused strictly on the
service at hand while we need to prioritize our work across more than
ten thousand sources. This doesn't mean upstream severities are wrong,
but we must have some way to prioritize our work that's consistent.

The CVE tracker does indeed trigger the process to issuing security
updates. You can see this process at https://usn.ubuntu.com/usn/ where
we have issued 290 USNs so far this year. Less visible is the sponsored
updates to universe packages in collaboration with the community, which
do not get USNs.

We do not have service level agreements for security updates. Even
if such a thing were feasible for our team we believe this would be
counter-productive to overall security as many upstreams issue regression
fixes after security fixes get wider coverage.

Seven months for an issue with an upstream-provided patch is indeed too
long. We have recently hired a new team member; while his duties are
primarily providing extended support for 12.04 LTS to Ubuntu Advantage
customers, he will also perform additional updates and generalist duties
as time allows.

In addition, while it doesn't happen often, we are happy to sponsor
updates for packages in main. It would probably be best to check in with
us before beginning work on a sponsored update to ensure (a) we'd be
interested in the approach (b) that it wouldn't be duplicating work. For
more information see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/UpdateProcedures
. This may help bring a specific update to our users more quickly.

Thanks

[Bug 1700657] Re: Touchpad not detected in Lenovo X1 Yoga / Yoga 720-15IKB

2017-07-31 Thread Mike Schwartz
Thanks

How long does it take for an upstream fix?

I'm a long time C/C++ programmer (40+ years). I built kernels since the
0.99 days...

So far, though, all I'm getting is black screens after loading the ram
disk. Seems like the graphics drivers aren't loading. Normally the
screen shows the Kubuntu graphic loading/splash screen at that point.

I tried 4.13, 4.12, and 4.10 kernel builds.

I'm going to give it one more try from the github repo (linus')

[Bug 1707487] Re: Bluetooth speaker only plays as mono

2017-07-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
David, have you tried setting the speaker mode to A2DP in sound
settings? If it defaulted to headset mode then it might indeed be in low
quality mono mode. Make sure the correct mode is set in your sound
settings.

It's meant to choose high quality by default but that doesn't always
work. Once you correct the setting it should be remembered.

[Bug 1700657] Re: Touchpad not detected in Lenovo X1 Yoga / Yoga 720-15IKB

2017-07-31 Thread F. H.
@mykesx:
If you don't want to wait for a upstream fix I'd recommend you to simply
compile your own kernel like described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild

You can either use my repository
(https://github.com/Hoeze/linux/tree/zesty) for Ubuntu Kernel 4.10.17 or
you clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-zesty.git and add the
patch yourself.

(However, I experienced Kernel 4.13 as much more stable on the Yoga
720-15, so you might consider using the current development version of
linux: https://github.com/torvalds/linux.git)

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

multiverse, it is community maintained. If you are able, I suggest
coordinating with upstream and posting a debdiff for this issue. When a
debdiff is available, members of the security team will review it and
publish the package. See the following link for more information:

[Bug 1707810] [NEW] regression on udev rules for HUAWEI mobile broadband?

2017-07-31 Thread ghomem
Public bug reported:

I found several bug reports about mobile broadband USB sticks not
working on Ubuntu 16.04. It seems that all the low level support is in
place but the udev rules are incomplete, in what could be a regression
from previous versions.

For example the HUAWEI device with vendor:product pair 12d1:1f01 (see
#1527914 ) worked fine (plug and play) on Ubuntu 12.04 but appears as as

[Bug 1707792] Re: systemd-udevd crashed with SIGABRT in __epoll_wait_nocancel()

2017-07-31 Thread Eliah Kagan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1705870 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1705870

** Description changed:

I don't know if this should be considered a bug in systemd or apport.

systemd-udevd appears to crash with this bug on each boot. This is a
fully updated Xubuntu Artful amd64 system (installed yesterday from the
  daily-live) with systemd 234-2ubuntu1, udev 234-2ubuntu1, apport
- 2.20.6-0ubuntu4, and kernel version 4.11.0-12-generic. The system has no
- swap and runs inside a VMware Workstation 12.5.7 virtual machine (with
- open-vm-tools) on a Windows host. The host system has not approached
- memory exhaustion. I suspect these details may be relevant, because the
- host system sometimes experiences unexplained slowdowns when I/O is
- high. Note that I only suspect, and do not actually know for sure, that
- this bug may have been triggered by the host system's I/O problems.
+ 2.20.6-0ubuntu4, and kernel version 4.11.0-12-generic. The system swaps
+ to a 948 MiB swap file (/swapfile) and runs inside a VMware Workstation
+ 12.5.7 virtual machine (with open-vm-tools) on a Windows host. The host
+ system has not approached memory exhaustion. I suspect these details may
+ be relevant, because the host system sometimes experiences unexplained
+ slowdowns when I/O is high. Note that I only suspect, and do not
+ actually know for sure, that this bug may have been triggered by the
+ host system's I/O problems.

I only know about this crash because Apport notified me. Starting the
system seems to take longer than it should; specifically, once the non-
graphical login prompt is shown, it sometimes takes up to a minute for
LightDM to appear. But I don't know if that is related, and beyond that,
I have not observed anything going wrong on the system. When I
originally installed this Ubuntu (guest) system, Apport did not inform
me of a crash. Since then, the host system engaged in more intensive
I/O, and also I enabled artful-proposed, and now the crash occurs. I
don't know if either of these changes are relevant.

This most resembles bug 1705870, which occurred in Artful with some
slightly earlier package versions. Depending on the results of the
symbolic retrace, I might mark this as a duplicate of that bug. It also
resembles bug 1663995, bug 1506798, bug 1433320, and some of its (many)
duplicates. That bug (i.e., bug 1433320) was considered to affect apport
  rather than systemd (see
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1433320/comments/10)
and is considered fixed. (To a lesser extent, this bug resembles bug
1437896, which that bug mentions, and which is considered a bug in
  systemd.)

I have made /bin/sh a symlink to bash on this system instead of dash
(because I am using this system to test
  http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/development/chapter02/mounting.html,
which expects it). Aside from making startup scripts run a bit slower
and increasing memory footprint slightly, I suspect this is irrelevant
to this bug, but it's a significant (and *unusual*) change so I figured
  it is worth mentioning.

It could be something you did manually, but there is a pattern of bug
reports from users that have changed their /etc/fstab in this way - too many
to be coincidence. So it is likely that either you ran some tool which made
this change, in which case we would like to know what that tool is and
blacklist / fix it; or that you followed some guide on the Internet telling
you to do this, and we should speak to someone about getting that guide
fixed.

@brad - lsb_release -c returns just the codename so if you use that you
could remove the pipe to grep.
