Why do you need to run germinate?

It's built automatically on Launchpad's infrastructure. Not pbuilder.
There may be a difference there. You can see the build logs here:

[Bug 1721576] Re: [Hyper-V] hvsock: add proper sync for vmbus_hvsock_device_unregister()

2017-10-09 Thread Dexuan Cui
However, when I look at the 4.11 ubuntu-azure kernel
(https://git.launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux-
azure/log/?h=master-next), I think we need to pull more related vmbus
patches from the mainline, because there are already non-trivial
differences.

Since we're moving to 4.13 (https://git.launchpad.net/~canonical-
kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux-azure/log/?h=azure-edge-next), I'm not sure
if we should pull non-trivial changes to the 4.11 ubuntu-azure kernel.

[Bug 1722448] [NEW] 16.04 VMware Guest Freezes - Killing compiz unfreezes

2017-10-09 Thread Russell Robinson
Public bug reported:

I used 14.04 for many years with this problem, but recently "upgraded"
to 16.04.

Since then using multiple monitors causes X to randomly freeze.

After searching similar bugs I found that a "killall -9 compiz" from an
SSH login un-freezes it.

However, if the system gets into this state once, it happens more
frequently.

I found the problem occurred when using multiple workspaces on multiple
monitors, so I stopped using multiple workspaces.

To my surprise, the problem continued to happen.

So, the problem may be related multiple monitors.

[Bug 1716047] Re: rustc control file contains unsupported restriction formulas in control file

2017-10-09 Thread Charles F. Stephens
Our builds use germinate to create a custom ISO installer. Germinate
attempts to parse all of the index files from an APT repository
including Sources. The rustc source package contains restriction
formulas which are too new (read as: schema change) for germinate and/or
python-apt to understand and it errors out.

If anyone attempted to rebuild rustc using trusty using pbuilder, it
won't work for the same reason. (This leads me to conclude that whomever
built the binary rustc packages for this trusty backport did not do so
on a trusty system).

There are zero other content changes required, just removal of the
unsupported restriction formulas in the Build-Depends* fields of the
control file.

Can you cycle through the virtual consoles (using ctrl-alt-f1, ctrl-

gather more information about what systemd unit is timing out? Then it
would be best to open a new bug against the corresponding package.

[Bug 1721735] Re: UbuntuOne auth dialog is displayed when polkit auth dialog is dismissed

2017-10-09 Thread Robert Ancell
The cause of this is the Polkit failure is reported back via snapd as a
general unauthorized failure. GNOME Software then attempts to do a snap
login which is the old method of gaining authorization.

There seem to be two solutions to this:

1. snapd should report the auth failure with an error code so that GNOME
Software can tell this is a Polkit failure and not a login credentials
failure. James said this change was unlikely to be done in time for
artful.

2. GNOME Software could stop attempting to login on an auth failure.
This would mean that the Ubuntu One dialog is never shown for snaps,
which is probably appropriate as Polkit covers this case. It means we
can't see private snaps from GNOME Software (since we never prompt for
login), but this was always going to be the case after we switched to
Polkit. To handle private snaps we will have to rethink the UI to
support optional login support.

I think the most appropriate solution is 2 with a versioned dependency
on snapd. We probably can't do this until snapd lands in the archive?

[Bug 1722434] [NEW] stack frame size detection is broken

2017-10-09 Thread Robie Basak
Public bug reported:

As reported in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=878107

The patch, as Ondřej says, clearly shouldn't be able to make anything
worse, appears likely to fix the current mariadb-10.1 dep8 failure on
s390x and ppc64el, and likely may fix other latent bugs on those
architectures, so I intend to upload it.

I think it's possible that the fix will also fix the current FTBFS (bug
1718373). If it doesn't, then the FTBFS will remain, but I don't think
the package state will be any worse with this patch in it.

[Bug 1721852] Re: JavaFX support is in upstream OpenJDK 9 but missing in Ubuntu OpenJDK 9

2017-10-09 Thread John Neffenger
The OpenJFX source tree is separate from the OpenJDK sources, but its
modules are included as input into the OpenJDK build process. For the
OpenJFX source tree, see here:

Getting the Sources
https://wiki.openjdk.java.net/display/OpenJFX/Building+OpenJFX#BuildingOpenJFX-GettingtheSources

Packaging it with the OpenJDK is described here:

Integration with OpenJDK 9
https://wiki.openjdk.java.net/display/OpenJFX/Building+OpenJFX#BuildingOpenJFX-IntegrationwithOpenJDK9

which says:

--
Build OpenJFX first.

Configure the JDK with the following addition:

  --with-import-modules=_path_to_openjfx/9-dev/build/modular-sdk

Then build the JDK as normal.
--

I built OpenJFX many times, but I have not yet tried this new procedure
for including it in OpenJDK 9. I'm willing to help and try it myself if
you run into any problems. I'm eager to see JavaFX finally integrated
into the OpenJDK packages on Ubuntu.

[Bug 1716047] Re: rustc control file contains unsupported restriction formulas in control file

2017-10-09 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for the report and the patch!

> This is breaking our builds which run germinate which calls on APT to
parse various APT files...

Whose builds? Please can you explain what you're actually trying to do?

As this doesn't affect newer releases, I'd normally ask you to go
through https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates to get a fix into
Trusty, which includes justification that the fix should land under SRU
criteria.

But rustc entered Trusty through the security update process. I'm
guessing (but am not sure) that it was required for a Firefox security
update.

Given that it is quite special, I think we really need to understand
your use case in order to know what process to use to fix it.

I subscribed Chris in case he is able to just drop the build profile
specifiers in a subsequent backport.

[Bug 1713621] Re: Return the ability (setting) to move the Show Applications icon to the left (or top) of the dock

2017-10-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Reopened because a third person has requested this today.

Didier's reason for saying "Won't Fix" makes some sense when the dock is
on the left. But when the dock is on the bottom, the request makes more
sense.

It's also worth pointing out this is a request for a /setting/ and not a
request to change the default button location.

** Summary changed:

- Return the ability (setting) to move the Show Applications icon to the top
(or left) of the dock
+ Return the ability (setting) to move the Show Applications icon to the left

- Suggestion: Move the Show Applications icon to the top of the dock
-
- It's almost hidden at the bottom on the screen right now. And not very
- well discoverable for Unity users who are used to the BFB at the top.
+ Add an option to move the Show Applications icon to the top (or left) of
+ the dock.

[Bug 1720572] Re: grub-install -> efibootmgr: option requires an argument -- 'd'

2017-10-09 Thread Steve Langasek
strace shows:

[pid 30986] execve("/bin/efibootmgr", ["efibootmgr", "-q", "-c", "-d"],
[/* 35 vars */]) = 0

this points to a problem in grub-
core/osdep/unix/platform.c:grub_install_register_efi(), where
efidir_disk is being set to NULL.

This suggests that grub is unable to resolve your /dev/md1 to a physical
disk.

[Bug 1720149] Re: gnome-shell segv on wake from display or system sleep

2017-10-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Rachel,

We are tracking hundreds of gnome-shell crashes right now and have had a
few recent ones related to monitor configurations too.

In order to make progress on this bug we either need a stack trace (look
in /var/crash for crash files), or someone who experiences the problem
to debug it remotely (use a second machine to attach a debugger to
gnome-shell and get a trace of the crash that way).

My concern is that the problem description without a stack trace is so
vague it can easily be mistaken for some other bug. So please try to
gather that additional information. This may help:

http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash

And this is only a request for Rachel right now, so as to avoid
confusion from other peoples' similar issues.

[Bug 1722410] Re: java9: -version output seems wrong: "9-Ubuntu"

2017-10-09 Thread Matthias Klose
the spec doesn't talk how to identify vendor builds, and doesn't talk
about how to configure the build to include this information in the
version information. Yes, it should be changed. Let's wait for the
first "update" version, how the version information will change with
that.

Yes, it "fixed" the state of packages by overwriting a file from one
package with a file from another package. That's just removing the
symptom, not fixing the issue.

[Bug 1722419] Re: 17.10 xrandr doesn't seem to function

2017-10-09 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1722419/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 936257] Re: the system settings grid shouldn't use a fixed geometry

I'm marking this fixed. gnome-control-center 3.26 available in Ubuntu

shouldn't be affected by this bug.

[Bug 1722419] [NEW] 17.10 xrandr doesn't seem to function

2017-10-09 Thread tom
Public bug reported:

xrandr --output XWAYLAND0 --brightness .45 does nothing.
expected behavior is lower screen brightness to .45 of full.

In Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 and Fedora twenty-whatever, this command reduces
the screen brightness on my device. In Ubuntu GNOME, the monitor was
called eDP-1, but now it's called XWAYLAND0.
