2017-10-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK, let's use bug 1725708 for the wrongly placed bubble menu.

** Description changed:

Window menus close as soon as they open, if you happen to be moving the
mouse upward very slightly at the same time.

  Test case:
- 1. Move the cursor slowly upward over a window titlebar, and right click on
the titlebar at the same time.
+ 1. Move the cursor slowly upward over Terminal's titlebar, and right click on
the titlebar at the same time.

Expected: Window menu opens and stays open.
Observed: Window menu opens, but immediately closes again.

[Bug 1717446] Re: Window menus close as soon as they open (and in some cases minimizes the window)

2017-10-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Whether or not this bug triggers an accidental minimize seems to depend
on the style of the headerbar.

For gedit, the window is accidentally minimized as the bubble menu also
appears too high (so the user is now unwittingly selecting Minimize).
For Terminal however, the accidental minimize does not happen.

Maybe we need a separate bug for those bubble menus appearing too high,
but it's very closely related to this one right now.

[Bug 1707352] Re: the change from libsane to libsane1 broke many (all?) 3rd party plug-ins for sane

2017-10-22 Thread PeterPall
As a 2nd look this is actually 2 bugs:

  - renaming the library broke nearly all 3rd party drivers
  - some drivers were additionally broken by a upstream change.

Perhaps we should split the bug into two parts: Creating a "libsane"
that does nothing but depend on "libsane1" will fix the 1st of these
bugs. The second one might require help of the sane developers,
though...

** Description changed:

  Impact
  ==
- The Debian maintainer renamed libsane to libsane1-experimental "to match with
the soname". This apparently fixes a Lintian warning. Also the soname change
might be justified by the new version breaking most 3rd party plug-ins even if
the library version number doesn't any bigger change than any ordinary new
version of the library:
+
+ 1) The Debian maintainer renamed libsane to libsane1-experimental "to
+ match with the soname". This apparently fixes a Lintian warning, but
+ makes installing 3rd-party plug-ins hard, as they typically depend on
+ "libsane", not on "libsane1". The first try to add a "Provides: libsane"
+ to libsane1 (which created a virtual package) didn't make drivers
+ installable that claim to depend on a minimum version of libsane as
+ virtual packages are ignored in this case.
+
+ 2) The soname change might be justified by the new version breaking
+ (several? most?) 3rd party plug-ins even if the library version number
+ doesn't indicate any bigger change than any ordinary new version of the
+ library - which might indicate that this phenomenon might be an upstream
+ bug.

libsane 1.0.25 in zesty includes libsane.so.1.25
  libsane1 1.0.27 in artful includes libsane.so.1.27

- The breaking of all plug-ins might be an upstream bug - which is allowed in
an experimental package, but is unfortunate as in Ubuntu this package went
mainstream; The library rename is an additional factor that makes it impossible
to install any scanner drivers for libsane that are distributed as a .deb
unless the driver distributors recompiles against Ubuntu 17.10+.
- It is to note that depending on the manufacturer for many old scanners there
won't be new versions of the plug-ins that are recompiled like this; Adding a
Provides: libsane to the library might therefore make some plug-ins work,
perhaps.
+ It is to note that depending on the manufacturer for many old scanners
+ there won't be new versions of the plug-ins that are recompiled like
+ this.

  Test Case
  =
  Visit http://support.epson.net/linux/en/iscan_c.html
  Download the amd64 deb .tar.gz
  Unzip it.
Install the iscan .deb from the core folder.

It won't install before this SRU because it Depends: libsane

  Regression Potential

The fix here was proposed to the Debian maintainer in July but there's been
virtually zero response on it. In the meantime the workaround that was proposed
initially has started to result in automatically uninstalling gtk - which makes
the system basically useless.

It doesn't seem like adding the Provides will make things any worse for
third-party drivers but it has a goodme chance of making things better
  for some.

  Impossibility of workarounds

Just installing an old version of libsane is impossible as it uninstalls
libgtk (which depends on libsane1 which conflicts with libsane) making the
system basically useless.

  Original Bug Report
  ===
I don't know if that can be prevented in the long run. But both brscan (for
my brother scanner) and iscan (for my epson scanners) have been broken by the
change from libsane to libsane1. For iscan I have unpackaged the debian
package, changed the dependency it contains from libsane to libsane1 and
installed the changed package. But even then my epson scanners no more work
leaving me without any scanner => Reporting a bug.

It looks like you might have installed Ubuntu GNOME in the past. Try
uninstalling that:

  sudo apt remove gnome-session

and then restart. At least as a possible workaround.

[Bug 1726233] Re: kubuntu panel freezes on return from lockscreen

2017-10-22 Thread Peter Hewett
This is a fresh install of Kubuntu 17.10 64bit. No widgets added to panel.
6 apps are pinned to the panel (konsole, thunderbird, firefox, dolphin,
chromium, cantata).

When the panel is frozen, the pinned apps still start when I click on
their icon, and the application launcher works ok. Just the task manager
section showing running apps is frozen, and the clock is stopped.

Log out and log in clears the problem (until next time screen locks).
Sometime, the panel works ok after screen lock, sometimes it freezes.

[Bug 1726232] [NEW] Ubuntu 17.10 login screen appearing upside down

2017-10-22 Thread Scott Jacobi
Public bug reported:

Ever since I upgraded my laptop from 17.04 to 17.10, my login screen has
been upside down, and I can find no way to correct it. I can
successfully login. When I first logged in, my desktop was upside down
as well. I was able to correct that by typing "xrandr --output eDP-1-1
--rotate normal" and that setting has stuck, but it has had no effect on
my login screen. This laptop does not have an orientation sensor, no
screen rotation is intended. This is a MSI GS60 6QE laptop, with a
GeForce GTX 970M GPU, nVidia driver 384.90 installed. I apologize if
there is a simple setting that I have overlooked, but I scoured Google
for hours with no luck.

[Bug 1726233] [NEW] kubuntu panel freezes on return from lockscreen

2017-10-22 Thread Peter Hewett
Public bug reported:

By default, Kubuntu automatically locks the screen. Password is needed to
reopen the desktop. Sometimes, the panel at the bottom of the screen is frozen.
Apps perform normally, but starting and stopping apps don't change what is
shown on the panel. The clock on the panel stays frozen at the time the screen
locked.
Application identified by xprop WM_CLASS is plasmashell, but launchpad does not
accept this as a package.

2017-10-22 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

Right. I simply said I wish it could happen, that's all. It doesn't
require a rehashing of everything that is already basically public
information within the fandom. I'm not sure you are correct that Mic
didn't write his bass lines, but hey, you must be close to the band to
know their writing process that accurately.

I think you're describing something like bug 1716160, but it's hard to
tell while most of the description is about the old rather than current
behaviour.

Please try to improve the bug description here to be more about the new
behaviour than the old behaviour.

[Bug 1726224] [NEW] wacom invisible mouse pointer in wayland

2017-10-22 Thread Timokl
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 17.10, I connected my Wacom Intuos tablet,
which has touch and pen functionality.

Controlling the mouse pointer through the touch functionality seems to
work fine, but using the stylus produced very strange behaviour,
depending the program.

- With Firefox there there are two pointers - one that is moving in
accordance with the stylus movements, and one stays put at the position,
when the stylus movement was detected.

- With Darktable the mouse pointer becomes invisible, once it's moved
inside of the application window (it registers clicks though). Once the
pointer is moved outside of the application window, it appears again.

I'm running Ubuntu inside of a wayland session.

libwacom2: 0.24-1

2017-10-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK, we're going to need to analyse the hung gnome-shell process. Please
try to do this:

1. Install openssh-server:
   sudo apt install openssh-server
2. Using a second machine, log into the offending machine via SSH:
   ssh @
where is your username, and is either hostname or the
machine's IP address.
3. Reproduce the hang.
4. From your ssh login, run:
   killall -TRAP -u $USER gnome-shell
5. Look in /var/crash for a newly created file, something like
'_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash'
6. Upload the crash file using this command or similar:
   ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash
7. Tell use the new bug ID that was created.

discussion was in different bugs that are open. Even if it feels like
the same issue as was discussed here...

[Bug 1726135] Re: need to use group name

2017-10-22 Thread Douglas Kosovic
Group Name is for IPsec Extended authentication (XAuth).

Xauth support was never implemented in network-manager-l2tp and it
doesn't make sense as XAuth doesn't use L2TP, so Group Name was removed
from the IPsec configuration dialog box.

So a summary for the differences in the two VPN connections are:
- IPsec XAuth uses XAuth for the user credentials which involves a Group Name.
- L2TP/IPsec uses L2TP for the PPP user credentials.

The Gnome Project provides a VPN IPsec IKEv1 VPN client with Group Name called
network-manager-libreswan :
https://git.gnome.org/browse/network-manager-libreswan/plain/appdata/libreswan.png

Did Group Name ever work for you in the old network-manager-l2tp? If it
did, it was for something other than XAuth.
