Does this “5 seconds” thing happen on mainline kernel, or the kernel I
built?

[Bug 1730051] Re: keepalive_timeout in libvirtd.conf is causing virsh to disconnect

2017-11-05 Thread George Tabacar
Hello Christian,

I understand how the system works, and this is why I noticed this issue,
in theory this should not happen because it should be keepalive+1 (so 6)
but it does.

Here is a quick reply to your questions:

I have enabled keepalive_timeout in libvirtd.conf and I have the
following settings there:

keepalive_interval = 5
keepalive_count = 0 (you also need to enable this)

1. I don't fully get "trying to use virsh console, virsh edit you will
get the following".

I connect to a guest or try to edit it using virsh in the following way:

virsh edit guest1 (using nano)

After 5 seconds, nano gets killed (SIGTERM) and I get that message in
/var/log/syslog

Also I get this in the terminal:

error: Disconnected from qemu:///system due to I/O error

[Bug 1726394] Re: Passes through prctl(PR_SET_SECCOMP, SECCOMP_MODE_FILTER, address)

2017-11-05 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
FYI - this is from http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/qemu-
devel/2017-11/msg00417.html

Upstream response looks good, but not committed there yet.

@Julian - given the case will you need this as an SRU as well or is it
only tied to newer apt (or newer apt use cases)?

Test queues in Bionic are still stalling this, there was an error on an
iso test on s390x which seemed unrelated to the update - I retriggered
for now as I'd assume it needs a newer fixed daily iso.

[Bug 1681839] Re: libvirt - disk not ready for pivot yet

2017-11-05 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi Dominik,
thanks for the links.

Yes 1.3.1 is ancient in a way of "as old as the 16.04 Ubuntu release"
plus fix-backports as they are identifiable and qualify for the SRU
process [1].

We have three Options here, but atm not all are feasible:

1. Backport the fix to Xenial
I beg your pardon, but for this particular case so far I unable to recreate to
debug further on my side or to identify the fix it would need for the SRU - I
provided a test ppa in c#15 to help with that, but I understand that it can be
unwanted to shove that into production systems to test it.

2. Update the packages in Xenial to newer versions
The complexity of the virtualization stack (and all the potential regressions
by just upgrading the versions for everyone out there) can be high, so just
bumping all those in Xenial to the level e.g. we have in artful do not qualify
for an SRU update.

3. Use a backport
Since the virtualization stack is one of those places where the "newer vs
stable" issue comes up often, and even more so because newer openstack releases
should go along a newer virt-stack there is a way out just as you assume. Via
the Ubuntu Cloud Archive [2] you can get access to a backport of the most
recent versions into the latest LTS. While it wasn't created for that I'd think
this is the "backport" to 16.04 LTS you might be looking for.

Yeah, thanks Martin, if that is the case I agree to this plan of action.

As soon as we can explain what triggers it I likely can easily bring
something upstream.

If you want to discuss potential experiments/reproducers feel free to
catch me on IRC.

[Bug 1730051] Re: keepalive_timeout in libvirtd.conf is causing virsh to disconnect

2017-11-05 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi George,
there are a few such settings for the service:
/etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf - for general detection of dead clients to libvirtd
/etc/libvirt/qemu.conf - for qemu migrations (not related here)
/etc/libvirt/libxl.conf - as above for Xen (not related here)

But there are not one but two settings in each of them:
/etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf:#keepalive_interval = 5
/etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf:#keepalive_count = 5

By default the config is disabled, but important is that this is no just
"5 seconds" but instead quoting: "In other words, the connection is
automatically closed approximately after keepalive_interval *
(keepalive_count + 1) seconds since the last message received from the
client"

I checked the code, the defaults are really 5/5 - not just a .conf comment
missing to be updated.
That would be ~30 seconds, so much more than the 5 you mentioned.

Virsh defaults to interval 5 count 6 in its code.
So it is even more patient.

Then this is NOT a timeout like:
- 5 is set in client, so if nothing appears in 5 seconds die
- 5 is set in server, so send after 5
- since the msg from the server arrives slightly after 5 it dies

Instead it will be:
- every 5 sec it will send a keepalive msg
- if there is no response in 5*(5+1) seconds then kill the connection
- this is done from client and server independently

All that does not mean your case is invalid, but maybe the real root
cause and solution is slightly different?.

Some questions:
1. I don't fully get "trying to use virsh console, virsh edit you will get the
following".
   I was able to run virsh console on one terminal and virsh edit on another to
the same guest
   without any issues.
   Could you outline the exact commands you use to see the issue?
2. Which release are you on - maybe I checked the wrong sources for your case
   $ cat /etc/os-release
   $ dpkg -l '*libvirt*' '*qemu*'
3. Did you change the timout in the config file I mentioned and then it works
for you?

In general the default configs are taken from upstream wherever possible, so in
this case.
Which means eventually if we want/need to change them we will discuss that
there - but lets clarify the case a bit before going there.

[Bug 1730289] [NEW] Courier-LDAP build is linked against worong ldap library version

2017-11-05 Thread Aleksey Sanin
Public bug reported:

The courier-ldap authentication has intermittent connectivity problems.
I've traced this to the following code in the courier-ldap module:

https://github.com/svarshavchik/courier/blob/master/courier-
authlib/authldaplib.cpp#L142

This code intentionally disables the connection attempt for 60 secs
after the first failure due to an old memory leak in LDAP library. I've
recently installed Ubuntu 17.10 which contains libldap-2.4-2. According
to the courier-imap code it should have been fixed in ldap library
20019. The LDAP library on 17.10 has the following defines:

$ grep -r LDAP_VENDOR_ /usr/include/*
/usr/include/ldap_features.h:#define LDAP_VENDOR_VERSION 20445
/usr/include/ldap.h:#define LDAP_VENDOR_NAME"OpenLDAP"

Which should ensure that the 60 sec delay is disabled by default.
However, I can clearly see it is happening on my install. The only
explanation is that Couirer-LDAP package was compiled against different
header files.

P.S. The bug goes away if I manually set env variable LDAP_MEMORY_LEAK=0 -- in
this case I can see occasional connection failures followed immediately by a
successful connection (as expected).

Nothing will happen. As only Ubuntu 17.10 is affected, no other Ubuntu-

Ubuntu's direct involvement in Gnome Shell is only getting started, so
don't let the age of existing bug reports get you down. Just last week I
closed an upstream Gnome Shell bug that had been open for over 6 years.

[Bug 1730285] [NEW] use $mirror instead of $path in calling system(gunzip)

After looking at the source code, I believe the following code fragment
inside "process_index_gz" should be the following:

if ( $index =~ s/\.gz$// )
{
system("gunzip < $mirror$index.gz > $mirror$index");
print "done!\n";
}

instead of the original:

if ( $index =~ s/\.gz$// )
{
system("gunzip < $path/$index.gz > $path/$index");
print "done!\n";
}

Since $path despite its name came from:

$path = sanitise_uri($uri);

and $mirror came from:

$mirror = get_variable("mirror_path") . "/" . $path;

I understand that it's not you specifically, and I apologise that I did
not find the earlier duplicate... the search did not find it, although
to be fair it is more than 2 years old, and logged against a respin...
which makes me think it's a hopeless cause like many other issues,
how likely is a duplicate of a 2 year old issue in the gnome respin ever
likely to be considered again?

I cannot deny that the work done to make Gnome 3 acceptable to regular
Ubuntu users over the last few months has been nothing more than
incredible, but I can't help but think it shouldn't have been necessary.

Please don't assign bugs to "wayland". The "wayland" package is only
protocol libraries. Graphics problems such as this should be assigned to
the display server: gnome-shell.

Remember Wayland is not a display server. It is only a protocol.

[Bug 1730281] [NEW] Application icons appear and suddenly disappear when Applications Button is activated via a touchscreen

2017-11-05 Thread PJSingh5000
Public bug reported:

Clicking on the application button (with a mouse) in the Ubuntu Dock
causes the applications icons to be displayed.

ISSUE

On a Touch Screen...

The issue is, if you touch the application button in the Ubuntu Dock,
the applications icons appear (expand out from the button using
animation) but then they suddenly disappear (contract back into the
button using animation).

If you touch the button and do not remove your finger, all of the icons
are displayed on the screen. As soon as you remove your finger, the
icons recede back into the button.

EXPECTED

Touching the application button (with a finger) in the Ubuntu Dock should cause
the applications icons to be displayed. They should continue to be displayed
until the user selects an application,
 presses the ESC key, or clicks an icon on the dock.

[Bug 1725676] Re: Keyboard language unavailable on the login screen

2017-11-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Proper evaluation begins with everyone being on the same page, so that
we increase collaboration and our ability to solve a problem. That means
aggressively deduplicating bugs should always be our first priority
But I don't mind if it's done on this page or that page.

[Bug 1730278] [NEW] Udev slows down the bootup by a lot

2017-11-05 Thread i2000s
Public bug reported:

I think this is a bug as it started from recent updates (I don't
remember when was the start). Basically, systemd-udev-settle takes 1min
30sec in the booting process. Since I use LVM and btrfs systems, I
cannot mask the udev service from booting. Any insight would be
appreciated. Below are some of my log. Computer: Lenovo Thinkpad P50,

I have also tried the network service. The network manager needs a lot

[Bug 1418357] Re: gnome-system-log auto-scrolls away from entry being viewed

2017-11-05 Thread jay armstrong
In 16.04, I have the option to disable autoscroll but the sane default
expected by the OP still seems much more useful, convenient, and common.

Additionally, with autoscroll enabled, the app will change the log file
being viewed every few seconds - in this case, from syslog to
Xorg.0.log. That makes even less sense.

[Bug 1730195] Re: Launcher transparrency is applied to the top bar, invisible icons.

2017-11-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1528915 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1528915

I understand. Reporting bugs is messy and more complicated than many of
us would like.

Also this feature is not one that Ubuntu would have chosen to implement.
We just inherited it from Gnome.

I marked this bug as invalid because the way it is worded is presently
invalid (not a bug at all, but a feature). As mentioned in comment #2,
if you would like to convert this into an enhancement request then it
needs to be reworded significantly or replaced by a new bug report. I
will try to do that now for you so that you don't need to...

** Summary changed:

- Launcher transparrency is applied to the top bar, invisible icons.
+ Make the panel and dock transparency configurable

** Description changed:

- The new launcher in Ubuntu 17.10's gnome-shell setup has auto
- transparency... but this is also applied to the top bar, which it was
- not in Unity.
+ Make the panel and dock transparency configurable.

- As a result, using a light background makes the light icons in the bar
- almost invisible.
+ Some people prefer them more opaque, some prefer more translucent, and
+ some prefer that the appearance doesn't change at all.

- The top bar transparency should not be linked to the launcher, and
- probably there should not be transparrency on the top bar.
-
- It would also be nice if there was a slider to control the level of
- transparrency in the launcher.
-
- See attached image of near invisible icons.
+ This was all configurable in Unity and it would be helpful if Ubuntu
+ users of Gnome Shell could continue to do the same.

[Bug 1725315] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in g_hash_table_lookup_node()

2017-11-05 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Per comment #9, I confirm it only happens on gnome-shell on wayland mode.
I tested thoroughly over the last few days and I did not experience a single
crash on gnome-shell on Xorg.Once I switch back to gnome-shell on wayland, the
frequent crashes start happening again.

Per comment #10, I tested the workaround: uninstall evolution-indicator
package, and I confirm it works. No more evolution crashes on gnome-
shell on wayland.

PS
I ran the tests mentioned above on 2 machines: on Virtualbox VM, and on
Hardware. Same results on both.

[Bug 1725676] Re: Keyboard language unavailable on the login screen

2017-11-05 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Daniel: This is about a kind of regression when upgrading from 17.04
with Unity/LightDM to 17.10 with GNOME/GDM, meaning that one or more
previously available keyboard layouts are no longer available on the
login screen. The other bug is about not being able to use input methods
for typing passwords. How could they possibly be the same issue? Just
because the reporter of the other bug, who no longer uses Ubuntu,
"thinks" they are without providing any justification?

They are not. (Besides, even if they had been duplicates, you shouldn't
hide the one with some analyses because the other "is shorter/easier to
read"!)

Please leave this bug as is now, allowing a proper evaluation whether
this is an issue which could/should be fixed somehow.

[Bug 1730195] Re: Launcher transparrency is applied to the top bar, invisible icons.

2017-11-05 Thread James Lewis
You know... I thought things might have changed, if those working on the
project don't like something, but can't get it changed, what hope do I
have?? Why mark this bug as invalid if you agree that it's a problem.

Canonical's customers do not understand the shifting relationships
between different components of the distribution, let alone what this
new relationship with upstream gnome means... I have no idea where else
to report such a thing.

So, be it, I have reported it, Canonical doesn't care, end of story...
just like almost every other bug I've ever reported. I wonder why I
bother.

2017-11-05 Thread Bob
I have the same issue. My desperate workaround is to pull the USB plug
and reinsert it. That seems to reset the tablet and make it work again,
but the problem returns after a few minutes. Another workaround is to
flip the pen and use the eraser end, which buys a bit more time before
having to pull the plug again. It was flawless before the 17.10 upgrade.

[Bug 1730195] Re: Launcher transparrency is applied to the top bar, invisible icons.

2017-11-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This actually has nothing to do with the dock/launcher.

The decision to make the panel (top bar) transparent was an upstream
decision by the Gnome guys. It's just a coincidence that the
dock/launcher is also transparent.

I don't like it either. Maybe log a new bug to disable or make the
transparency level in the panel (top bar) configurable. Or reword this
bug in that way.

[Bug 1720820] Re: Totem with gstreamer1.0-vaapi and Wayland is just a black screen, then crashes on AMD/radeon graphics

2017-11-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

+ WORKAROUNDS
+
+ Just for totem: sudo apt remove gstreamer1.0-vaapi
+
+ Or to workaround in all players: sudo apt remove mesa-va-drivers
+
+
+ ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION
+
  Totem with gstreamer1.0-vaapi and Wayland crashes on my machine with AMD
  Fury graphics card and open source drivers. Video output is just a black
  frame and crash happens within just a few seconds after video playback
  starts.

  Could not reproduce bug on two older Intel laptops with iGPU's where
  hardware acceleration seemed to work fine under Wayland.

  Issue is only present on Wayland, not x.

  I can get hardware accelerated video playback working on Wayland with
  'mpv --hwdec=vaapi-copy --opengl-backend=wayland' but this is the only
  way I have found so far. Even in mpv, no other option than vaapi-copy
  works.

  gst-play-1.0 outputs the following error:
  ERROR Internal error: could not render surface for file:///***
  ERROR debug information: ../../../gst/vaapi/gstvaapisink.c(1483):
gst_vaapisink_show_frame_unlocked ():
/GstPlayBin:playbin/GstPlaySink:playsink/GstBin:vbin/GstVaapiSink:vaapisink0

[Bug 1573982] Re: LVM boot problem - volumes not activated after upgrade to Xenial

2017-11-05 Thread Chris Sanders
I've run across this today and it affects MAAS.
MAAS version: 2.2.2 (6099-g8751f91-0ubuntu1~16.04.1)

Configuring an LVM based drive with a raid on top of it for the root
partition will trigger this. Deploying the default kernel / OS will fail
due to inactive volume groups.

The fix as expected:
lvm vgchange -ay
mdadm --assemble --scan
exit

Then apply the above mentioned script to make it stick.

** Also affects: maas (Ubuntu)
