fine but how can one set this automatically.
It cannot be added to .profile nor .bash_rc (will not execute)

If I have to enter this command manually after each boot on every
machine I need a new pair of runners.

[Bug 1730596] [NEW] s390/mm: fix write access check in gup_huge_pmd()

2017-11-06 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

The check for the _SEGMENT_ENTRY_PROTECT bit in gup_huge_pmd() is the
wrong way around. It must not be set for write==1, and not be checked for
write==0. Fix this similar to how it was fixed for ptes long time ago in
commit 25591b0 ("[S390] fix get_user_pages_fast").

One impact of this bug would be unnecessarily using the gup slow path for
write==0 on r/w mappings. A potentially more severe impact would be that
gup_huge_pmd() will succeed for write==1 on r/o mappings.

Addl information

Problem: The check for the _SEGMENT_ENTRY_PROTECT bit in
gup_huge_pmd() is the wrong way around. It must not be set
for write==1, and not be checked for write==0. Allowing
write==1 with protection bit set, instead of breaking out
to the slow path, will result in a missing faultin_page()
to clear the protection bit (for valid writable mappings),
and the async I/O write operation will fail to write to
  such a mapping.
Solution: Fix it by correctly checking the protection bit like it is
also done in gup_pte_range() and gup_huge_pud().
Reproduction: Async I/O workload on buffers that are mapped as transparent
  hugepages.

[Bug 1577137] Re: saned.service masked and cannot be unmasked

2017-11-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Alvaro Gil, the original reporter's problem noted in the Bug Description
is the scope of this long closed report.

Despite this, when stating documentation you are referring to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SaneDaemonTutorial to advise, this was tested
working in Xenial at the time of its creation with my hardware. Also, this
follows the systemd man page of how to set up unit configuration files as per:

[Bug 1730568] [NEW] gnome-shell crashes when indicator-multiload starts: gtk_icon_info_load_icon_finish: assertion failed: (icon_info_get_pixbuf_ready (icon_info))

2017-11-06 Thread David Leonard
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 17.10
Release:17.10

gnome-shell 3.26.1-0ubuntu5 amd64
indicator-multiload 0.4-0ubuntu5 amd64

I logged in (gdm3/wayland), tapped Meta, started typing "load" and
selected "System Load Indicator" expecting to see a system load
indicator appear.

Instead, the session immediately exits and I am back at the gdm login screen.
Logging in again is then not possible (any new gnome session immediately exits)
until I SSH in and delete the file
$HOME/.config/autostart/indicator-multiload.desktop

Debug:

I uncommented Enable=true under [debug] in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf, logged
in again, and reproduced from gnome-terminal by running "indicator-
multiload". I captured the following from journalctl:

[Bug 1047384] Re: System Encryption Password set before setting keyboard locale

2017-11-06 Thread theghost
Beginning with 17.10 this is an issue. Before 17.10 you could workaround
the issue by installing an encrypted luks in your locale by starting the
live desktop and setting the correct keyboard BEFORE starting the
installer.

This workaround does not work anymore since 17.10.
It's pretty sad that this is still an issue today...especially since the issue
is known for years.

Afaik, the only distribution installers doing it right at the moment are
Fedora's Anaconda and Antergos Cnchi.
Suse is currently working on a proper upstream fix for Systemd:
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1046436 so this issue will be fixed
for OpenSuse in the next Leap version.
It's also an issue on Manjaro's Calamares.

[Bug 1730305] Re: 17.10 boot failure on Lenovo ThinkStation S30

2017-11-06 Thread Alvin Cao
Update:

I tried the following:

1. Fresh installed 17.04 with kernel 4.10, everything was OK.
2. Installed
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.13.11/linux-image-4.13.11-041311-generic_4.13.11-041311.201711020532_amd64.deb,
boot failure and the same error log.
3. Installed
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.14-rc8/linux-image-4.14.0-041400rc8-generic_4.14.0-041400rc8.201711052313_amd64.deb,
boot failure and the same error log.

So apparently it's only about the kernel, nothing to do with Ubuntu
version. If there is anything else I can help, let me know.

[Bug 1730559] [NEW] compiz memory leak

2017-11-06 Thread Александр
Public bug reported:

1. Looked at task Manager, I saw the memory usage of the application compiz 2.2
GB, CPU time of 26 hours, with uptime
09:45:58 up 1 day, 18:20, 1 user, load average: 1,29, of 1.23, 0,92
2. Expect to see less гuptime and less memory consumption.
3. When the computer is idle consider the application download too large, I
propose to draw attention to it.

So, I got basically the same error as before with the kernel 4.14-rc8.
There is an error on the USB port from my DisplayLink dock station, but
the major slowdown part is to find and mount my LVM /home volume (see
the full log of journalctl -abl from the attachment):

One thing to notice is that I have resized the LVM volume groups for
root and home a while ago, but my /etc/fstab was defined using the vg
names instead of UUIDs, and hence the resizing volume groups shouldn't
affect the booting to my understanding. I neither have the 70
-persistent-net.rules under the directory /etc/udev/rules.d/ as some
people claimed in bug#758808 [0]. Below are some other information if
they are helpful to identify the root cause.

$ cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

[Bug 1551951] Re: synaptic does not run over gnome wayland session

2017-11-06 Thread dino99
>From the Debian report #818366 :

just a couple remarks:

(1) The method pkexec uses to grant root (i.e. the user it runs its
argument as) access to the real user's X display doesn't work under
Wayland, but still using X (i.e. using Xwayland).
Xwayland (at least as started by mutter/gnome-shell) is started without the
"-auth" option and hence only grants access to the real user (adopting
Wayland's security model).
Hence there's no Xauthority file to grant access to other users. The
workaround is to explicitly allow root to access the user's X display using

$ xhost +si:localuser:root

(2) synaptic nowadays is built with gtk+ 3, so should run natively under
Wayland, but

$ /usr/sbin/synaptic

segfaults:

Program terminated with signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
#0 0x7fa743155cc0 in wl_display_interface ()
at /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libwayland-client.so.0

name="") at rgmainwindow.cc:815
#5 0x5619390467c2 in main(int, char**) (argc=,
argv=) at gsynaptic.cc:462

The reason is the explicit call to XSync. If I remove that, it works
natively under Wayland. But only as non-root, as pkexec doesn't work on
Wayland.

Both instances crash regardless. apport does leave a crash file under

Actually that gives me an idea. What if you use 'apport-cli' in place of
'ubuntu-bug'. Does it work then?

[Bug 1730091] Re: session freezes/hangs after undetermined amount of time

2017-11-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sorry if you got a surprise. But there is nothing we can do with a crash
file -- it needs to be analysed by the automatic upload procedure of
'ubuntu-bug'.

So aside from us not needing it, it is potentially a security risk for
you leaving the crash file there as any crash file could contain
passwords or other sensitive data. An alternative approach is to mark
the bug itself as Private to keep such attachments fairly private, but
in this case we didn't need to keep the attachment.

I know ubuntu-bug/apport does crash in some cases, which blocks us from
getting bug reports. This is a significant issue which I have tried to
make more people aware of (see bug 1552577).

When 'ubuntu-bug' fails do you find it leaves its own crash file in
/var/crash? Or can you see any evidence of your system reporting apport
crashes on the page that this command opens?...

xdg-open "https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/"`sudo cat /var/lib/whoopsie
/whoopsie-id`

[Bug 1577137] Re: saned.service masked and cannot be unmasked

2017-11-06 Thread Alvaro Gil
The problem is the documentation is not correct, it states:

for systemd we need to add 2 configuation files in
/etc/systemd/system.

This is incorrect, move the two files to:

   /etc/systemd/

---

after continue with the tutorial.

sudo systemctl enable saned.socket
sudo systemctl start saned.socket
systemctl status saned.socket

now it will load correctly on restart.

[Bug 1730091] Re: session freezes/hangs after undetermined amount of time

2017-11-06 Thread Nathanel Titane
Daniel,

the reason i copied the crash information and uploaded it is because
apport (ubuntu-bug) seems to crash for no apparent reason when I try to
get the file to the bug report.

I understand there are protocols to follow but your removal of the file
is kind of counter productive...

[Bug 1730550] Re: e1000e in 4.4.0-97-generic breaks 82574L under heavy load.

2017-11-06 Thread david
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

This issue was first reported on the netdev email list by Lennart Sorensen:
  https://www.mail-archive.com/netdev@vger.kernel.org/msg178170.html

Commit 16ecba59bc333d6282ee057fb02339f77a880beb causes link drops on the
  82574L under heavy load.

"Unfortunately this commit changed the driver to assume
that the Other Causes interrupt can only mean link state change and
hence sets the flag that (unfortunately) means both link is down and link
state should be checked. Since this now happens 3000 times per second,
the chances of it happening while the watchdog_task is checking the link
state becomes pretty high, and it if does happen to coincice, then the
watchdog_task will reset the adapter, which causes a real loss of link."

A fix for this issue was accepted into the net-next branch, along with
  other e1000e/igb patches:
  https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/davem/net-
  next.git/commit/?id=f44dea3421b47d355a835e9cfcc59ca7318575a9

The original reported experienced this issue on a Supermicro X7SPA-
HF-D525 server board. We see this issue on many servers running X9DBL-1F
server boards. Both boards use the Intel 82574L for the network
interfaces. We see messages like this under heavy load:

  [Nov 6 15:42] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Down
[ +0.001670] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow
Control: Rx/Tx
  [Nov 6 16:10] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Down
[ +0.008505] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow
Control: Rx/Tx
  [Nov 7 00:49] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Down
[ +2.235111] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow
Control: Rx/Tx

We have confirmed that the connected switch sees the link drops also, to
these are not false alarms from the e1000e driver.

  # lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
  Release: 16.04

I could not cleanly apply the net-next patch to 4.4.0 so I tested with just
the following cherry picked changes on the latest 4.4.0 kernel source package.
  https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/823942/
  https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/823945/
  https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/823940/
  https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/823941/
  https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/823939/

Although it's my understanding the first two are the critical ones for
the race condition. I have been running with the patches e1000e kernel
driver, under network load for 7 days and I no longer see the network
  interface drops.

Could we pull these changes into the Ubuntu 4.4.0 kernel ?

  Thanks

[Bug 1730478] Re: using shift key to wake up display causes invalid password

2017-11-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I can't seem to reproduce the problem yet.

Waking the screen with Shift works, but does not dismiss the lock
screen. The lock screen only goes away after I start typing a
password but it seems to work.
