Re: [Bug 1716857] Re: gdm3, hybrid nvidia with modeset=1, no external monitors detected

2017-12-12 Thread Tim Richardson
Let me clarify: the problem exists in Fedora too. Until a few hours ago, I
had never got prime sync and gdm3 working in any distribution.
This one line fix works, believe it or not. It's really a half a line fix.
I have only tried it in ubuntu 17.10 so far. Fedora is not a focus for me,
and I have other problems with nvidia binary support on Fedora 27. The
learning curve for Fedora is steep for me so I am not motivated to
investigate it.

About the Iscan, PNG and JPEG phenomenon: Iscan's png support still

[Bug 1716857] Re: gdm3, hybrid nvidia with modeset=1, no external monitors detected

2017-12-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Tim, are you really saying just that one-line change fixed it?...

I can confirm at least that /usr/share/gdm/generate-config is introduced
only by Debian/Ubuntu packaging. It's not part of the upstream GDM
project. So if Fedora's approach of running under xinit works then we
should probably do the same. I can't yet see why it works though.

[Bug 1737211] Re: ipxe-qemu is missing support for devices since qemu 2.7

2017-12-12 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi Nathan,
I highly appreciate you coming up with the change proposed here as I can
include it when working on this set of packages anyway.
IMHO it is an actual feature request, even thou the reasons to have missed to
add the feature earlier lie in the past - I want you to understand why, so I
added a bit of background below.

In general you have to understand the reason for "prebuilt PXE roms bundled
with qemu were removed in favour of building them all from source" - the reason
for that is [1].
TL;DR - blobs are of unknown source, can be impossible to fix and critical if a
lawyer comes by, so they have to be built from source wherever possible.

Then on top of that there was an issue with ipxe-qemu that I started to
tackle about 2 months ago [2] and will be fixed in the 18.04 cycle -
this one caused the Ubuntu ipxe roms to stay behind upstream for too
long. The TL;DR of it is that new builds break migration as well as
suspend/resume across versions. I have a POC that works to fix it while
being able to update to the latest roms.

None of the above changes anything, but you should know that these roms
were not just forgotten, but instead all of the misses you found had
real reasons.

[Bug 1561278] Re: internal sound card not detected HP X2

2017-12-12 Thread quakeglen
I just installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04 and kernel 4.12, it gives me the best
results so far:

- Internal audio: no sound, detected as bytcht-nocodec 1 ouput/1 input
- HDMI audio: works fine, tested with chrome and rhythmbox
- HDMI video: works fine
- Touchscreen: simple touch only, for example: on web pages can scroll, but on
text editors select text instead of scroll
- Card Reader: not mounted automatically on startup, unless lock session and
session restarts, sd mounts automatically, sometimes gives error, but still
mounts
- Battery icon: works fine
- Bluethooth: seems to work fine, detects devices
- Lock button: not working
- Start button: not working
- up/down volume: not working
- wifi: some times get stuck, but in general works great
- camera: tried webcamoid, but doesn't start. Cheese says device not found.

[Bug 1737639] Re: Touchpad stopped working in Dell XPS13

2017-12-12 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
I don't have XPS 9343 to check right now.

Does the touchpad use PS/2 mode or i2c mode?

I don't see i2c-hid for i2c-DLL0665:01, so I guess something's wrong about your
i2c controller.
Can you give Windows a try? I guess you can observe the same issue under
Windows.

[Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2017-12-12 Thread bodhi.zazen
Phillip:

You were banned from the Ubuntu Forms not by me personally, but rather
by the Forums Council after repeated violations of the CoC and difficult
interactions with the Forums Staff including both moderators and Forums
Council Members.

You appealed your ban to the Community Council, and your ban was upheld.

This is not the appropriate place to protest you ban. I am no longer an
active staff member, please contact the current Forums Council if you
wish to discuss any potential future use of the Forums

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ForumCouncil

As far as the technical discussion I am afraid we will have to agree to
disagree.

I can not always follow what you are saying, but I have the impression,
perhaps falsely, you do not understand or that you intermingle issues of
Wayland, X (XWayland, Xhost), and Weston, those are fairly diverse
features / functions.

At any rate, I also think you do not understand that Wayland is in rapid
development and not all the mechanisms of security have been agreed on
up stream or resolved.

I believe Upstream has made their security intentions very clear in
their mailing list and security blog, which I have provided for your
consideration.

The fedora experience makes this very clear in their bug reports as
well. The Fedora project has raised most if not all of your issues, and
as they are a bit further ahead, the Fedora Bug Reports are referenced
here.

This thread makes it clear that Ubuntu is working not on revamping
wayland security, but by rewriting applications and the way they obtain
elevated privileges.

I also see your bugs getting closed as "wont fix" here on Ubuntu.

My best suggestion would be that you engage into a technical discussion
with your LP mentor, the community council, perhaps Norbert, or one of
the Gnome Developers whom you respect rather than continue a discussion
with myself, here, on this bug report.

I suggest you conduct such a technical discussion outside this bug
report, perhaps on the gnome or wayland mailing list or IRC or whatever
channel you feel benefits you most. I have given you the Wayland mailing
list and links to security discussions and can send them again if you
would like.

I believe this bug report is not the best place to obtain the
clarification and answers to your questions and I have in good faith
provided you and others what I would hope would be helpful information
and sources of further information.

I believe once Upstream (Wayland) feels the wayland code has matured
their long term intentions will be to drop XWayland and support for
circumventing wayland security via the mechanisms you currently use /
exploit such as Xhost , su - , etc.

I believe Xwayland and Xhost are intended to give downstream projects
such a Fedora and Ubuntu time to transition from X to Wayland and time
for Wayland to mature. Obviously this is a large project, both for
Wayland and Ubuntu .

I do not believe that because mechanisms currently exist to run
applications as root on Wayland at this time that you should assume that
such mechanisms will either be maintained or expanded in the future.

[Bug 1454306] Re: apt-btrfs-snapshot supported reports "Sorry, your system lacks support for the snapshot feature" since update of btrfs-tools to 4.0-2 in debian/testing

2017-12-12 Thread Vincent Fortier
Interesting that I've just hit this bug.
Current version in xenial is still 3.4.2.
Version 3.5+ is not in proposed update anymore.
This seems like a trivial task to fix, can anyone look into it?
Thnx really much in advance!

[Bug 1684505] Re: [SRU] package python-murano-dashboard 1:3.2.0-0ubuntu1~cloud0 [origin: Canonical] failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status

2017-12-12 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hi Corey!

We on the SRU team generally like there to be *some* sort of mention of
what testing has been done when marking an SRU as verification-done ☺.

Even for something as simple as adding a package dependency it's useful
to test that the rebuilt package (a) pulls in the expected dependency,
and (b) still works.

Celebratory fireworks from me.

It seems to work. For ubuntu the only difference is

[Service]
ExecStartPre=/usr/share/gdm/generate-config

becomes

[Service]
ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/xinit /usr/share/gdm/generate-config

I have a proper ubuntu gnome session running with gdm, an external
monitor and laptop panel, with prime sync on and no flickering, running
'ubuntu on xorg'

on my thinkpad W520 which is old but is a genuine Optimus laptop with Quadro

[Bug 1731595] Re: L3 HA: multiple agents are active at the same time

2017-12-12 Thread Xav Paice
We have installed the Ocata -proposed package, however the situation is
this:

- there's 464 routers configured, on 3 Neutron gateway hosts, using l3-ha, and
each router is scheduled to all 3 hosts.
- we installed the package because were in a situation with a current incident
with multiple l3 agents active, hoping the package update would solve the
problem. One of the gateway hosts was being rebooted at the time to also try
to do a King Canute and halt the tidal wave of arp.
- We later found that openvswitch had run out of filehandles, see LP: #1737866
- Resolving that allowed ovs to create a ton more filehandles.
- Removing/ re-adding the routers to agents seemed to clean things up, we saw
some routers with multiple agents active, and some with none active (all 3
agents 'standby').
- After a few iterations of that, things cleaned up.
- 15-20 mins later, we saw more routers with multiple agents active (ones which
weren't before), and ran through the same cleanup steps. At this time, there
were a large number of keepalived messages in syslog, particularly routers
becoming MASTER then BACKUP again. (https://pastebin.canonical.com/205361/)
- after another hour or two, we're still clean.

I can't at this stage whether the fix actually fixed the problem or not
- I need to dig further to find out if there could have been some
process running cleanups.

[Bug 1716857] Re: gdm3, hybrid nvidia with modeset=1, no external monitors detected

2017-12-12 Thread Tim Richardson
ubuntu user Hon Weng Chong has emailed me as he continues to investigate the
problem.
He believes he has proof that it is is GDM configuration issue and has provided
the following fix

Hey Tim,

I figured out a hack solution to the GDM prime issue. If you replace
/lib/systemd/system/gdm3.service with this file:

https://gist.github.com/hwchong/b3634b387e91b38d355a0500ffecfc7d

and /etc/X11/xorg.conf with this:

https://gist.github.com/hwchong/28d7c70aafd62a0d3114c5746da7da36

You should be able to use Prime Sync with your Intel graphics card and
have an external monitor connected to the Nvidia GPU without using
LightDM.

Cheers,
Hon

His proposed changes to xorg are probably not significant. He is proposing to
add this to nvidia options, but this can be done via the GUI or command line.

Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0
{ForceCompositionPipeline=On, ForceFullCompositionPipeline=On}"

The revised /lib/systemd/system/gdm3.service he proposes is

[Bug 1737657] Re: Failure to be root is repored in a misleading message

2017-12-12 Thread Paul Gear
Hi @kogorman-pacbell,

Can you explain what you think should be happening here? Running
ntpdate from sudo or a root shell gives exactly the same behaviour -
ntpdate requires a list of servers to be provided on the command line,
and it is simply indicating that this has not been provided.

In addition, it's completely legitimate to run ntpdate as a non-root
user in order to see the offset from a remote server without setting the
time (see the man page for details on the -d option).

[Bug 1732612] Re: Alt+Printscreen not working (doesn't generate keypress event)

2017-12-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
@popey, have a look at bug 1707828. It shows Ctrl+Alt+T not working due
to DBus timeouts and GSD problems. Quite possibly other key combos like
Alt+PrtScn could suffer a similar fate.

[Bug 1737831] Re: MTU size adjustment not working

2017-12-12 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1737831/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]
