[Bug 1589008] Re: Bluetooth freezing video playback In Ubuntu/Kubuntu 16.04
Thought I'd let you guys know, especially given the complaints above, that oddly I just developed this exact same bug but in Windows! On a Windows 10 only laptop which just updated itself to the 'Fall' Creators edition or whatever it's called. Now when trying to stream videos while connected to Bluetooth headphones, they just don't play. When I switch over to laptop speakers, it automatically starts playing. They've done something to the audio because the volume icon now has extra popup option to easily switch between them. Have RealTek audio which I updated the driver but no difference. [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models
** Description changed: SRU Justification Impact: Many users are reporting issues with bios corruption with 17.10. This seems to stem from enabling the intel-spi-* drivers in the kernel, which don't appear to be ready for use on end-user machines. Fix: Disable this driver. Test Case: Fix has been verified by our HWE team on affected hardware. Regression Potential: Minimal, it's unlikely anyone is actually doing anything which requires this driver. --- Hi all, Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users reported a corrupted BIOS. It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after rebooting, the system starts with the old settings. [Bug 1735550] Re: Privacy: One screen not covered on wake after sleep
The short answer is no, there does not seem to be a time after which it will mask itself. It will blank again, but if you wake it again, the secondary display will still be unmasked while the primary is masked and waiting for me to start the password sequence. The long answer is that further testing reveals at least a part of my statement to be incorrect, though I feel that is a change (I let the system update almost every day). First, the expectation that I have here that is being violated is simply that I expect that my screens will be masked and require a password if the system is waked by any means after it suspends for any reason. As an aside, I can't find the customary require password on wake setting anywhere though the system is requiring a password. The violation I've seen is that the primary screen is masked and the secondary is not under some circumstances. I stated "When I wake the system after suspending it" and the truth is that this is only happening now when it has suspended itself. If I suspend it using the keyboard sequence to manually activate the suspension, all is clean. If it suspends itself due to inactivity, after waking it to enter the password, I can see the laptop display with nothing obscured. After a while, it will go dark again, but if I wake it again it will still not be obscured. At the start of this session, I did witness the laptop display showing open windows while the primary display was obscured and required me to enter my password. So I know the problem is still present. Other problems and/or unusual factors are likely mixed in. In my setup power panel, "automatic suspend" is off as are the "on battery power" and "plugged in" options in the subpanel. "Dim screen when inactive" is off. "Blank screen" is never. "Screen Lock" under the privacy settings is also off. Yet, the displays do turn off after about 30 minutes of inactivity, and, even later, the system does automatically suspend. Possibly related - I have changed my "Primary Display" option so that the external display is primary by clicking on "primary display" in the display arrangement panel and selecting the external display. So the password box comes up on the external display, not the primary one. My display mode is "Join Displays". The external (primary) display with the username and/or password box is masked as it should be at all times. I always operate on power, so battery settings should be irrelevant in this. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1735550 Title: Privacy: One screen not covered on wake after sleep To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1735550/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1311056] Re: apt-add-repository adds duplicate commented/disabled source lines
This might be enough to fix it - I just compare the values against each other rather than doing 4 explicit cases. [Bug 1311056] Re: apt-add-repository adds duplicate commented/disabled source lines
Analysis *before* situation: The loop after the __find call did not really match the __find call before - it was looking only for non- disabled sources, but then had an if case for disabled ones to enable them if the components match - which was never reached. Now, I think the patch is slightly wrong: The if case is reachable now, so it would enable an existing disabled source even if we passed disabled=True. The for loop thus needs 4 cases now, the existing ones corresponding to disabled=False and two variants of them for disabled=True (might be possible to write with less cases). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1311056 Title: apt-add-repository adds duplicate commented/disabled source lines To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python-apt/+bug/1311056/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 80900] Re: Avahi daemon prevents resolution of FQDNs ending in ".local" due to false negatives in the detection of ".local" networks
I guess I am wrong about the "upstream security hole" thing. But I don't know why you would use mDNS for serious security anyway. mdns_minimal already causes a 4-second fallthrough (if AVAHI is disabled at least). So Lennart is ranting and screaming only about the [NOTFOUND=return] line? As if he decides what NSS does. His is a plugin. A plugin is a peer to other plugins; not one plugin is more important than the others; the plugin is just that, the configuration is up to the end user (or the bigger system). He acts as if /etc/nsswitch.conf now belongs to his package. His PulseAudio also configures itself in the same way as authorative with ALSA. Same idea, repeats itself. "If PulseAudio module is loaded, set it to be the ALSA default device". What? What if some other module wanted to do the same? So NSS is to Lennart just an annoyance, an archaic system that doesn't make him the most important person in the world and then he starts saying "fuck yous" to get his way. He wanted his package to be orphaned and renamed, as if he holds a trademark to "mdns". As if he holds a trademark to "libnss". Nothing about that is "Lennart". That's the least trade-markable name in the history of trademarkable names. And then he starts ranting "You don't give a fuck about people and you think it's about you". But everything is always about Lennart. What Lennart wants. What Lennart decides. What Lennart says is best. Quite remarkable that you can think "libnss-mdns" is somehow a trademarkable name. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/80900 Title: Avahi daemon prevents resolution of FQDNs ending in ".local" due to false negatives in the detection of ".local" networks To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/avahi/+bug/80900/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 80900] Re: Avahi daemon prevents resolution of FQDNs ending in ".local" due to false negatives in the detection of ".local" networks
Apple, whose OS X Yosemite (10.10) will not even resolve DNS when internet is down ("private networks don't exist"), simply chose the wrong name for something that is basically only used by machines. Their ".local" is not meant for manual use. They could just as easily have called it ".mdns" or something -- OS X will by default not show it anyway I'm sure. So they have claimed something they were not entitled to and their broken model of network computing is now the foundation of how to do things? * The local DNS server timeout issue is not really an issue; if you didn't want that you shouldn't have chosen .local for mdns. * .local leakage is no different from .home leakage and in this case can be prevented * redirecting local services would require upstream malicious .local to be configured in DNS servers but is directly at odds with the situation in which a _local_ .local DNS server is configured, so can also be solved by only allowing .local to get out if there IS a local .local DNS server * The only real argument that remains is name resolution; automatic changing of host names in cast of conflicts. RFC 6762 notes that "Implementers MAY choose to look up such names concurrently via other mechanisms (e.g., Unicast DNS) and coalesce the results in some fashion. Implementers choosing to do this should be aware of the potential for user confusion when a given name can produce different results depending on external network conditions (such as, but not limited to, which name lookup mechanism responds faster)." Lennart likes to scream about people not listening to the designers; but what does he do? The typical use case of a merged system is when DHCP provides DNS through supplied hostnames, there is no resolution in that sense, at least no standard one. The DHCP set would remain unchanged (and unresolved) while the mDNS set, oblivious to anything happening in unicast DNS, would produce different names where some of them would change, adding new ones to the total set. Those new names would only be resolvable through mDNS. Unless you were talking about a huge network (why would you use multicast in such a system?) the actual prevalence of such conflicts and confusion must be considered low. I think it can be argued that discovery is a much more important aspect of mDNS than resolution because most hardware devices pick MAC-based names and most operating systems also pick randomized names by default. Anything else reeks of configuration, and if you configure, you are not in zeroconf. So there aren't really any reasons that are deal-breaking, and those that exist are caused by mDNS' insistence to use for its automated system a human-meaningful name such as .local, which is a design flaw.

[Bug 1024475] Re: libnss-ldap causes boot hang on 12.04 precise, 14.04 trusty, 16.04 xenial
I just submitted #1739833 The postinst script for libnss-ldap invokes "invoke-rc.d" but invoke- rc.d will not do anything unless the Default-Start runlevel of /etc/init.d/libnss-ldap contains runlevel 5. Because /etc/init.d/libnss-ldap comes without any default runlevels, the action does nothing and the service is not started, causing the service to also not be stopped, and nssldap-update-ignoreusers to not be run on reboot. This in turn prevents the system users from being added to the ignore list which then causes the boot to fail because it tries to source them from LDAP. This is probably of particular relevance to groups, but I don't remember, this is long ago for me. (And it still hasn't been fixed, even though I have been sending emails about this too to devel-discuss). [Bug 1728467] Re: All files on ntfs partitions are marked executable
In ubuntu 16.10/17.04/17.10, handling of ntfs drives has changed compared to 14.04.5. Now, all files on an ntfs drive are marked as executable. This is bad for several reasons: - it just does not make any sense, data files are not executable, windows executables are usually not executable on linux - if there is a linux executable on the ntfs drive, security procedure on ext would be having to explicitly set the execute bit, why should it be "less" secure if the file resides on a different drive. - links (on ext, e.g. Desktop) to files residing on the ntfs drives are also marked executable. Error message: "The link ... is broken. Move it to Trash? This link cannot be used because its target ... doesn't exist." I first have to remove the execute bit from each and every link (which reapears instantly), only then they will be usable. All those links are invalid again after every reboot. Interestingly, if I remove the execute bit from a link AND open it using OpenWith... (not the standard application to open it) then ALL links to ntfs files become usable all of a sudden. - if I download a file to an ntfs drive and then try to open it using firefox download menu, I get a warning "Open executable file? ... is an executable file. Executable files can contain viruses or other malicious code that could harm your computer. Are you sure you want to execute ... ?" . This gives the false impression of a security risk! [Bug 1728467] Re: All files on ntfs partitions are marked executable
Please understand that this is severely affecting basic ubuntu use with ntfs drives for basic users, while bug #453605 that is said to be the reason of the misbehaviour has merely given more options to advanced users and was not intended to mess up file handling in the way it presumably did.
