[Bug 1745816] Re: [Bionic] 1.9.4-2ubuntu1 makes touchpad jumpy on Dell Precision 7510

2018-01-30 Thread Francois Thirioux
Thanks Daniel for your detailed answer.

I'm running mainly Wayland except during Nvidia sessions :-( .
Running X and synaptics would take me back in the past ! Even if I know how to
tweak synaptics properties & al., I prefer to stay with libinput.

And you mentioned that the upcoming 1.10 version will include the patch, so I
should learn how to use my (slightly) jumpy touchpad. Additionally I often use
my trackpoint...
AFAIK, Peter doesn't want to include too much user settings in libinput, but
couldn't we imagine an hysteresis property ?

[Bug 1641290] Re: [04f3:0903] Elan Microelectronics Corp fingerprint reader not recognised

2018-01-30 Thread SN
@Igor

finally got it working. turns out the manjaro config in pam.d is
slightly different. as a bonus it also works with sudo I had to use this
thread though because it seems to be the only discussion actually active
and going somewhere with the elan drivers. you should merge your source
into the main branch so that distributions can package it

[Bug 1641290] Re: [04f3:0903] Elan Microelectronics Corp fingerprint reader not recognised

2018-01-30 Thread SN
@Timur Hm

I have a rectangular reader and it seems to make all the difference. It
would appear that the driver is not all that accurate so needs a bigger
image to validate the swipe. The proprietory drivers are probably just
alot better at doing it with smaller images since they are designed
around specific devices and not generically like libfprint.

[Bug 1638136] Re: xbacklight not working in ubuntu 16.10

2018-01-30 Thread Kalle Raiskila
In my case this turned out to be a known bug with the "modesetting" graphics
driver, a fix for which would be available in linux 4.11 earliest:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=96572
Perhaps xbacklight works out-of-the-box on Ubuntu 17.10 :)

Googling around suggests Ubuntu 16.04 switched to modesetting driver
recently (but I could not find definitive info on this).

Switching back to the intel driver fixed the issue for me: I edited the file
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-intel-modesetting.conf
to load the "intel" driver instead of "modesetting" driver.

[Bug 1744072] Re: MIR Chrony in 18.04

2018-01-30 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
** Description changed:

  --- MIR ---

  1. Availability: The package is Ubuntu universe and builds for the
architectures it is designed to work on.

  2. Rationale:
2.1 NTP in general is needed quite a lot, but we want to exchange ntpd
which is the current implementation in main with chrony for 18.04.
2.2 Security: chrony was considered easier to be maintained easier in
terms of security and provide a more modern ntp experience as well.
2.3 Efficiency: Furthermore several cloud people seem to be interested to
change to chrony in the guests for its lower memoy/cpu footprint
   (efficiency I guess).
2.4 related to this MIR 6 years ago this is the same but for Fedora.
  See: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/ChronyDefaultNTP
IIRC some limitations that were present have been eliminated since, so
it is even better than it was back then.
2.5 In general one has to realize that in a systemd-timesync world
ntp/chrony are mostly for the "serving" portion of an ntp service, and
not so much about the client (unless you the better accuracy vs
  timesyncd is needed).

  3. Security: In fact the request came in by security Team, so I guess I
  call this section done

  3. Quality assurance
3.1 configuration ease - works after installation
   3.2 no high prio debconf
3.3 usability (no major issues in Debian nor Ubuntu)
asked Paul in regard to the ntp charm in comment #5
3.4 long-term >=high bugs (none in Debian nor Ubuntu)
3.5 Debian/Ubuntu bugs look reasonable maintained
3.6 does not deal with hard to support exotic hardware (other than ntpd
btw). If used this can be done through universe package GPSD (no
   dependency)
3.7 Test suite runs on build (some skipped if not env applicable)
   3.8 debian/watch exists
3.9 not depending on obsoleted packages

4.1 It does not face graphical UI
4.2 It is unfortunately not internationalized as far as I could see in the
source

  5. Dependencies - there is one not in main libtomcrypt
We don't want it in main either, instead we want to fix bug 1744328 and
then use libnss which is in main already.

  6. Not found major Policy or FSH violations that would have to be fixed.

  7. Maintenance
7.1 Upstream - is maintained well (and better than ntpd it seems
     according to some discussisons)
7.2 Ubuntu - Owning Team would be Ubuntu (in exchange to drop ntp)

  8. Background information:
Fulfills the same role as ntp, yet according to the security Team would
    be preferred for them.

  --- Affected Packages ---

I'll add all those as bug tasks.
Once the MIR has passed the state of uncertainty (e.g. would it be blocked by
one of the dependent bug being not doable at all) then please work on these
into 18.04. Here a list what is affected in the listed packages:

Maas - needs to change dependencies and maybe template
cloud-init - needs to support writing ntp config to chrony instead of ntpd
ceph-base - change recommends from ntpd to chrony (it only intends to get
good time and doesn't care via which dameon that is, so that should be ok to be
change)
ntp charm - switch to chrony for >=18.04
chrony - MIR itself (discussion here and eventually seeding)

--- Depending on further Bugs ---
In my initial evaluation I uncovered (and filed) a set of bugs that I
consider requirement to make it fully ready:
Reminder - tracking state here might be out of sync, I'll only change them to
Done once complete and not care about interim status changes.

- OPEN - bug 1718227 - convert ifup hooks to networkd compatible hooks
DONE - bug 1744662 - add chrony apparmor profile
- OPEN - bug 1744328 - make src:libnss libfreebl3 usable by other programs
- OPEN - bug 1744664 - use Ubuntu time servers
+ COMMITTED - bug 1744328 - make src:libnss libfreebl3 usable by other programs
+ COMMITTED - bug 1744664 - use Ubuntu time servers

[Bug 1746081] Re: Daemon flags aren't supported ? or unclear how.

2018-01-30 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
there is /etc/defaults/chrony in later versions of it.
But even that is no more working since the native systemd service does not
consider it.

I might take a look into this for 18.04 to be correct, but atm I have no plan
to do so for 16.04.
You might take a look at later Ubuntu releases and take the adapted init.d
script and /etc/default/chrony to adapt your system as needed.

I guess we are even up for volunteers to do so for 16.04 - it just is
not on my personal tsak list.

Right. So we agree your patch should be applied by default to ath9k.
Just as coexistence is enabled by default for Intel wifi. Unless someone
more familiar with ath9k has a (better) reason otherwise...

** Summary changed:

[Bug 1746418] [NEW] System freezes when starting Xorg after installing linux-image-4.13.0-32-generic

2018-01-30 Thread Sandra Ray
Public bug reported:

My laptop (Lenovo T440) freezes when starting Xorg (lightdm) only after
installing the latest ubuntu kernel for 17.10, linux-
image-4.13.0-32-generic.

Am running Xorg instead of MIR due to MIR crashing when I initially
upgraded from 17.04 to 17.10, but that's a different problem for a
different day. It's been running with Xorg stably for at least 2-3
months.

If I boot with the previous kernel version on my /boot (linux-
image-4.13.0-25-generic), everything works fine.

If I boot with the latest mainline kernel from the Ubuntu mainline repo
(4.15.0), everything works.

Using grub's option to run "Recovery Mode" for the 4.13.0-32 kernel, I
am able to use the CLI and access the encrypted root filesystem, which
is how I generated the apport repo that's attached. It's only when
telling it to continue Normal booting that it freezes, which is why I
suspect the problem of being Xorg.

When the system freezes, the fan starts to spin up. I cannot switch
virtual consoles using CTRL-ALT-F{1-7}. CTRL-ALT-DEL pressed repeatedly
doesn't do anything. To reboot, I have to hold the power button until
the system powers off.

[Bug 1746419] [NEW] bond parameters are not changed by 'netplan apply'

2018-01-30 Thread Daniel Axtens
Public bug reported:

I have a yaml file as follows:

network:
version: 2
ethernets:
bonddevs:
match:
name: ens[78]
bonds:
bond0:
interfaces: [bonddevs]
parameters:
mode: active-backup
mii-monitor-interval: 1
addresses:
- 10.10.10.1/24

Say I decide that 1s is too frequent for the MII interval, and I want to change
the interval to 2s.

If I change that in the yaml, then run
# netplan generate
# netplan apply
# cat /proc/net/bonding/bond0|grep "MII Polling Interval (ms)"
MII Polling Interval (ms): 1000

In other words, the change has not been applied.

Running netplan --debug apply prints:
DEBUG:device bond0 operstate is up, not replugging

So I wondered if bringing the bond down would help. It does not:
# ip link set dev bond0 down
# netplan apply
# cat /proc/net/bonding/bond0|grep "MII Polling Interval (ms)"
MII Polling Interval (ms): 1000

However, deleting the link works:
# ip link del dev bond0
# netplan apply
# cat /proc/net/bonding/bond0|grep "MII Polling Interval (ms)"
MII Polling Interval (ms): 2000

This is counter-intuitive behaviour.
Ideally, I would like a regular netplan apply to work without deleting the bond.
However, a changed to the docs to make this clear would be OK.

Problem Description:
=
- I setup my Boston LC system to run with Ubuntu 18.04

- I tried to test out Samsung PM1725a NVMe 1.6TB and .8 TB disk drives
on Boston LC system.

- The disk drive plugged good into the system. However, after boot the
system did not see the disk.

- I tried with both Samsung PM1725a NVMe 1.6TB and with .8TB disk drives
and none of them show up.

- This disk type plan to supporte in Boston LC system so if the system
does not recognize it then it is an issue.

- I checked with Joe W. my team lead and he told me to open github issue
for further investigation.

You need to install NMVE HBA in your machine

- I have NVME HBA adapter installed in the system and 2 Samsung PM1725a NVMe
1.6TB and .8 TB disk drives in the system. The adapter and nvme drives show
correctly.

- However, the "ls -l /dev/disk/by-path" command did not show any nvme drives.
So it's new issue with
Ubuntu 18.04. Without the PCI path the nvme disks can not be assigned to KVM
guest.

I’d like to see the output of `sudo nvme get-feature -f 0x0c -H
/dev/nvme0` when you use nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0.

This is more likely to a low level NVMe/PCIe issue. If possible, please
try to upgrade the firmware for the NVMe.

You’ll get hit by this issue (again) once next Debian release uses newer
kernel.

[Bug 1746164] Re: Enable Bluetooth-Wifi coexistence by default [bluetooth audio and network skip on Wifi activity]

2018-01-30 Thread PeterPall
The user won't probably want to do that:
 - The new default reduces the Wifi Speed only while bluetooth is actually
trying to send (which isn't too often if the user isn't currently listening to
Bluetooth audio) and
 - If Bluetooth/Wifi coecistence isn't enabled Bluetooth (when trying to send
on the same frequency as the WiFi) tends to make the Wifi packet impossible to
read => The WiFi packet has to be retransmitted => WiFi might get even slower
than with Bluetooth-WiFi coexistence enabled.
 - Also since I have enabled Bluetooth-Wifi coexistence my wifi connection has
stopped dropping from time to time => my guess is that if Bluetooth can send
while WiFi does, this destroys packets and this happens to happen with every
packet for a while the connection WiFi might drop as the Bluetooth one might in
this case.

[Bug 1746411] [NEW] [linux-oem] Fix out of bound VBT pin on CNP

2018-01-30 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Public bug reported:

=== SRU Justification ===
[Impact]
i915 crashed when probing for VBT pin. No graphics output after that.

[Test Case]
Enable Legacy ROM boot option in BIOS. Screen goes blank.
Cherrypick fixes can solve the issue.

[Fix]
Handle out of bounds pin value more appropriately.
Patches from Jani are most refactoring, but the fix we want depends on
them.
Patches from Rogrigo are the fixes we want. These patches are also
picked base on his suggestion,
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104139#c7

[Regression Potential]
Low. CNL and CNP are still quite new. These commits are limited to them.

[Bug 1746340] Re: Samsung SSD corruption (fsck needed)

2018-01-30 Thread Lucas Zanella
Thank you for your answer. I'm desperated. I just installed debian
therefore I'm not going to able to do it right now, but I have output
from the last time I was using Ubuntu.

I tried nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=5500 and it didn't work.
Then I've put it to 0, which didn't work too. Well, with 0 it didn't
generate errors while using, but while trying to update my machine,
which always happens too, so I don't know anymore. I remember seeing
ATSP Disabled at the output, but the error always happens when I try to
update my software...

Shouldn't this bug be already fixed? Or not in my kernel? I could pay to
get to the bottom of this, because I need my computer so much right now
and this bug is happening every day and I can't continue my work!

The last kernel I had on ubuntu was 4.13.0-26-generic, now I'm on debian
and I have 4.9.0-4.
