1) Yes, it is a desktop system, but not a wireless system, so network is
available (NetworkManager).
I've checked that with ssh-ing into this machine with a local account. Both
wbinfo -p and wbinfo -P showed everything is online. But also in this case the
first domain login failes.

I also had this segfault, and deleting the named socket also fixed it.
The only difference I could observe is that the initial connect() call
to the socket produced -1 ECONNREFUSED on a failed run (where it already
existed), and on a successful run (where it did not already exist) the
connect()

I feel conflicted about letting gnome-shell just exit. It will result in some
people logging bug reports that we can't diagnose, but those will be orders of
magnitude fewer than what we see now.
So short term for 18.04, it's a good idea. Slightly beyond that, it's
going to keep hurting us

Why would you want to install both libjpeg-progs and libjpeg-turbo-progs?
"apt-cache depends libjpeg-progs" tells they conflict and replace each other.
I noticed similar issue after upgrading from Trusty to Xenial. Both packages
were installed. I resolved that by purging libjpeg-progs. I did
Right, I wasn't give it too much hoping.
I'll escalate the issue to UVC upstream to let them know the issue.
I'll also ask Realtek if there's a way (maybe via USB control message) to
switch between UVC1.0/UVC1.5.

Did some testing on bionic.
It appears to me as if the feature is designed solely for Wayland. Yes,
on Wayland with GTK_IM_MODULE unset it seems to work without issues. On
Wayland with GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus I can reproduce the issues as described

I'd be happy to take a look at it. I haven't done anything with seeds
before, but from having a quick look at the wiki it looks like that seed
is what generates the vanilla-gnome-desktop package - is that right? If
I wanted to try to split up the two packages would I need to produce a
