[Bug 1682542] Re: Add support for top bars on all monitors to allow for multi-monitor support in primary extensions - apps-menu, places-menu, topbar, etc

2018-04-22 Thread Chris Billington
Agreed. Distinguishing between monitors serves no purpose. Like everyone
else I have strong muscle memory to look to the top right of my screen
when I want to see status indicators, or to look to the top to see the
time, or to move my mouse to the top right to change the volume. This
muscle memory has no concept of whether I am looking at my 'primary'
monitor or not, and feels a half second of confusion each time I try to
do one of these things on a second monitor, which is the hallmark of bad
interface design. I think I'm subconsciously adapting to just not use
the second monitor much, and that's a stupid outcome too.

Of course indicators have nothing to do with the specific monitor
they're on, but they have nothing to do with the primary monitor either,
so why are they there? They're there to give quick visual and
interactive access to certain frequently accessed information and
functionality, quick enough that you apparently don't want to have to
hit a few keypresses to get them. By the same logic you shouldn't have
to drag your mouse over increasingly large screen real estate.

Unity had it right in this regard. There should be just monitors, no
primary or secondary. It's a pointless distinction, and whilst I accept
it might be technically difficult to achieve given the current
architecture of gnome-shell, to insist on it as a design decision is
silly.

Not sure what you consider was done. That repository imports
automatically from the upstream one. What I said, i.e. that it will be
included in the xkb-data package only in 18.10, still stands.

[Bug 1765883] Re: gradle-debian-helper relies on an invalid java api directory

2018-04-22 Thread Steve Langasek
As I understand it, this is fixed in groovy 2.4.15-1ubuntu1.

groovy (2.4.15-1ubuntu1) bionic; urgency=medium

  * Replace HTTP URLs with local files: LP: #1765885.
- debian/control: build depends on -doc packages so javadoc can
  properly link the apis.
- debian/patches/10_use_local_docs.patch, debian/control: include
javadoc apis locally as invalid, unreacheable, or nonexistent
links cause the build to faild with openjdk-10.

[Bug 994921] Re: 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/app.crash' (and even more so, 'apport-cli -c /var/crash/app.crash') should still allow manual bug filing in stable releases

2018-04-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think it might be possible for any user to see their own automatic
crash reports, but the process is a little obfuscated.

If you're using Unity then you can open:

System Settings >
 Security & Privacy >
 Diagnostics >
 Show Previous Reports

But I can't find any such option in gnome-control-center or 18.04. So
you then have to make the link yourself:

  https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID

where ID is the contents of /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id

So you can try running this command to open it:

  xdg-open https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/`sudo cat /var/lib/whoopsie
/whoopsie-id`

Public bug reported:

Add a link/button to https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID

where ID is the contents of /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id

This opens a web page showing the machine's previous crash reports.

[Bug 994921] Re: 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/app.crash' (and even more so, 'apport-cli -c /var/crash/app.crash') should still allow manual bug filing in stable releases

2018-04-22 Thread Ads20000
Maybe the real problem is that reporters are unable to link to their
errors.ubuntu.com report (because if one doesn't have access then one
doesn't have _any_ access, as I understand it)?
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/994921/comments/33

If the original justification still stands (linked above) then maybe
support for users viewing their own reports in e.u.c (so they can link
to them) would be useful, or perhaps Ubuntu should make Launchpad scale
to mass crash reports somehow...

[Bug 1766095] Re: plymouthd constantly uses 5% of CPU

2018-04-22 Thread Michael Hanafey
When plymouthd is burning up 5% of the CPU it also prevents Ctrl-Alt-F6
from giving you a console login. Instead you get a black screen that
just echoes what you type.

After "sudo plymouth --quit", the 5% waste is gone and Ctrl-Alt-F6 gives
you a console login prompt.

The changes to the apparmour profile aren't minimal, they could probably
be tightened up, but I'm not very familiar with it.

I also needed to "sudo chmod u+s /usr/lib/qemu/qemu-bridge-helper"
again, as well.

Maybe this is related to bug 1765261. Some people have suggested there
are key repeat problems so if a key is getting unexpectedly repeated in

[Bug 1423773] Re: Gnome-Shell don't free ram when I change a wallpaper

2018-04-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I can reproduce this problem briefly in 18.04 (where the memory usage
jumps dramatically), but after changing wallpapers 3-5 times the memory
usage stops growing, or jumps back down to its original size. So I think
there's probably still something to fix here in 18.04. But also,
changing wallpapers is not something most users do very often.

[Bug 1766140] [NEW] OpenGL Renderer window appears in tab list when playing a video

2018-04-22 Thread Michael Gratton
Public bug reported:

Every time a web page plays a video in Epiphany, a window named "OpenGL
Renderer" appears in the gnome-shell alt-tab list (but not in the
overview), one for each video. If I have several pages open with several
videos, I get several of these phantom windows. Selecting the window in
the list does nothing.

17.10 or after first upgrading to 18.04.

[Bug 1728244] Re: Touchpad stops working after reboot on Apollo Lake

2018-04-22 Thread Andrey
Hi guys,
glad to inform that touchpad now is working on Teclast F7 running Xubuntu 18.04
It is just temporary workaround, hope it will added to default kernel.

All you need to do is patch kernel with that file
https://github.com/brotfessor/sipodev/tree/master/b

1. Add needed packages before compiling kernel
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get build-dep linux
sudo apt-get install kernel-package
sudo apt-get install libncurses5-dev
sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev libglib2.0-dev libglade2-dev
sudo apt-get install patch dpkg-dev

2. Download kernel sources
apt-get source linux-image-`uname -r`

3. Enter kernel folder and do config
cd linux-4.15.0/
make oldconfig

4. Replace original i2c-hid.c with one downloaded from github

mine located here
/home/teclast/linux-4.15.0/drivers/hid/i2c-hid/i2c-hid.c

5. Build kernel. This proccess might take over 1 hour
fakeroot make-kpkg -j 5 --initrd --append-to-version=-custom kernel_image
kernel_headers

6. Compiled kernel will be located in home folder. Jump to it and install
dpkg -i *.deb

7. Update grup and reboot. You should have working touchpad now.
sudo update-grub

[Bug 1766137] [NEW] Login fails when preceded by incorrect password

2018-04-22 Thread Chris A
Public bug reported:

Trying to log into my session (Gnome, Xorg), if I enter the wrong
password before entering it correctly, the session doesn't load and I
get a purple screen, a mouse cursor, and an invisible but clickable menu
in the top right. If I enter it correctly the first time, there is no
problem.

I've replicated this from a fresh boot, after logging out and after
'sudo service gdm restart' from the Ctrl-Alt-F4 console.

This is a fresh install, and didn't occur when I was using a previous
install of 18.04 (until Friday).
