[Bug 1784816] Re: Update DPDK in Bionic to latest Stable version (17.11.3)

2018-08-01 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Autopkgtests worked: https://bileto.ubuntu.com/excuses/3334/bionic.html
PPA: https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu/3334/+packages
Packaging MP:
https://code.launchpad.net/~paelzer/ubuntu/+source/dpdk/+git/dpdk/+merge/352006

Adding that to the Descriptions SRU Template

** Description changed:

  17.11.3-3 was made available in Cosmic now we should SRU the stable
  fixes to our latest LTS as well.

  This bug tracks an update for the DPDK packages, version 17.11.3.

  This update includes bugfixes only following the SRU policy exception
  defined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/DPDK.

  There is one exception to that in this upload which is after working
  with Mellanox on verification we will enable MLX based PMDs following
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Other_safe_cases for HW
  exploitation (these extra PMDs do not change existing PMDs/Libs - think
- of it as a few extra device drivers.
+ of it as a few extra device drivers. TO be sure This was already pre-
+ discussed with Steve Langasek to have an ack in advance on doing such.

  [Impact]

  Stable release update so not directly applicable; see the exception
  policy document.

  [Major Changes]

  Major Changes:
  - from upstream: none but bugfixes
  - from us: now enabling MLX4/5 PMds
  => The full release notes can be found at:
https://doc.dpdk.org/guides-17.11/rel_notes/release_17_11.html#id3

  [Test Plan]

  See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/DPDK#SRU_TestVerify
- TODO: attach a log of executing said tests from a ppa with the upload
- TODO: if there are any non passing tests - explain why that is ok in this
case.
+ - Autopkgtests worked: https://bileto.ubuntu.com/excuses/3334/bionic.html
+ - PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu/3334/+packages

+ - TODO: attach a log of executing said tests from a ppa with the upload
+ - TODO: if there are any non passing tests - explain why that is ok in this
case.

  [Regression Potential]

  Upstream performs extensive testing before release, giving us a high
  degree of confidence in the general case. There problems are most likely
  to manifest in Ubuntu-specific integrations, such as in relation to the
  versions of dependencies available and other packaging-specific matters.

  An extra risk might be due to the new drivers, but as I mentioned they
  do not affect the existing ones. There could be a minor impact due to
  dependencies - the new binary packages for MLX depend on ibverbs and
  such from rdma-core. The development libs libdpdk-dev&dpdk-dev depends
  on all libs+pmds as usual for such a lib. There could be a case where
  one wanted to use external MLNX-OFED - part of the procedure to install
  that is to remove and mask the "from Archive" libibverbs and such. Due
  to that with the upgrade libdpdk-dev/dpdk-dev would no more be
  installable (unless nodeps is used). But since this only hit non-
  Archive-cases it is already unsupported anyway - never the less I wanted
  to mention it for completeness.

Thanks. Though we don't need to wait for the result of further testing
to believe the bug is not in gnome-shell.

If you find the bug is in an extension that is offered by the Ubuntu
archive then we should reopen it as a task against that extension.

[Bug 1784796] Re: apt update fails - 'std::runtime_error' what(): random_device::__x86_rdrand(void)

2018-08-01 Thread Julian Andres Klode
This should be a problem with not enough entropy that should have been
fixed in recent kernel versions. APT 1.7 will have a fix for that, it's
not backported to 1.6 yet, but it should be easily doable.

I'd say: make sure you are running the latest kernel and that you don't
start apt shortly after boot.

[Bug 1784397] Re: dev channel (69.0.3497.12) FTBFS on cosmic amd64

2018-08-01 Thread Olivier Tilloy
https://swiftshader.googlesource.com/SwiftShader.git/+/c4972610c38bcf8478016572a92843f165d9bfb4
is the commit that introduced the revision on the chromium side.

Reverting to default visibility when building libGLESv2 fixes it.

In the corresponding swiftshader bug report
(https://bugs.chromium.org/p/swiftshader/issues/detail?id=64), it says
"the GCC and gold linkers only support it as an extension by using
unsafe assumptions about the symbol's address being unimportant". It
looks like as of 2.31, the GNU linker doesn't use those unsafe
assumptions any longer.

[Bug 1783600] Re: [MIR] yaru-theme

 - Build-Depends should be Build-Depends-Indep?

Afaik you are trying to demote gtk2 support, at least that's an activity
driven by Jerimy Bicha. However the new them unconditionally depends on
some gtk2 packages. Is there a better way to split out these
dependencies into a separate binary package?

[Bug 1750989] Re: [Ubuntu 18.04][I2S][ethtool] -k options says 'Cannot get device udp-fragmentation-offload settings: Operation not supported'

2018-08-01 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi Ben - yeah I agree it is generally working great across versions - the
biggest pain IMHO would be subtle things - not an obvious Feature that breaks
works.
Instead an uncommon option that now has a different effect or a slight change
in the output. Both could seriously affect scripting/automation that people
have already in place, but might be hard to spot even when testing.
Due to that I have suggested the opt-in hwe-ethtool style package which seems
to provide the best of both worlds.

I have put it on my list of things to discuss with the owning Team on
the next sprint, so if nothing happens until then I can discuss it there
more in detail.

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu

* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.

I removed the unofficial repositories ppa s from the repository list

something that has to do with the repositories added by the release-

[Bug 1784964] Re: Regression due to CVE-2018-1116 (processes not inheriting user ID or groups )

2018-08-01 Thread Alex Murray
I've tried replicating your setup in a fresh bionic VM (ie. using tmux
as default shell which then launches bash) and I can't replicate this:

amurray@sec-bionic-amd64:~$ grep amurray /etc/passwd
amurray:x:1000:1000:Ubuntu,,,:/home/amurray:/usr/bin/tmux
amurray@sec-bionic-amd64:~$ echo $SHELL
/bin/bash
amurray@sec-bionic-amd64:~$ cat /etc/tmux.conf
set -g default-shell /bin/bash
amurray@sec-bionic-amd64:~$ groups
amurray adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare

This is all from within a graphic gnome-terminal launched after logging
into the desktop (see picture which I will attach separately).

Can you perhaps try and provide more details on how I could try and
replicate this?

A couple things to try

1. I've rebuilt polkit-1 with some extra debugging to try and flag when
UIDs mismatch - this should end up in the following PPA
https://launchpad.net/~alexmurray/+archive/ubuntu/lp1784964 which you
could try installing from and seeing if journalctl shows anything?

2. Can you try downgrading polkit-1 and see if that resolves the issue?

[Bug 1134036] Re: Failure when using ssh with a locale that is not configured on the server

2018-08-01 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
I'm somewhat inclined to think that doing this in shell is a bit silly.
How about something like https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/NX7yqDVGyf/? It
should probably be in libc-bin (maybe even an flag to locale(1))
eventually but for now we could stuff into any Essential package (base-
files or util-linux or ...)

[Bug 1750989] Re: [Ubuntu 18.04][I2S][ethtool] -k options says 'Cannot get device udp-fragmentation-offload settings: Operation not supported'

2018-08-01 Thread Ben Hutchings
@paelzer: New features in ethtool are certainly dependent on kernel
version, but it always used to stay backward compatible with (much)
older kernel versions. When I maintained it I would test on old versions
before every release.

It's possible that this backward compatibility is no longer maintained,
particularly around UFO control, but I think it's worth testing whether
the new version could work for all supported kernel versions.

[Bug 1743079] Re: apparmor exit code 123

2018-08-01 Thread Adam Kosseck
Snapd is not installed so I believe the bug is in Apparmor.
We are currently running Apparmor "2.12-4ubuntu5 amd64"

** Package changed: snapd (Ubuntu) => apparmor (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1762952] Re: Alternative shortcut for layout switching Alt+Shift unexpectedly set by default

2018-08-01 Thread Chris J Arges
Hello Adam, or anyone else affected,

Accepted console-setup into bionic-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/console-
setup/1.178ubuntu2.4 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-bionic. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

** Changed in: console-setup (Ubuntu Bionic)
   Status: Confirmed => Fix Committed

** Tags removed: verification-done

[Bug 1743079] Re: apparmor exit code 123

2018-08-01 Thread Adam Kosseck
I also have this bug on Ubuntu 18.04.1.

This appears on a number of machines built from the minimal server ISO.

The fix was to run
mkdir -p /var/lib/snapd/apparmor/snap-config

[Bug 1774336] Re: FS-Cache: Assertion failed: FS-Cache: 6 == 5 is false

2018-08-01 Thread Daniel Axtens
** Description changed:

  == SRU Justification ==

  [81738.888281] FS-Cache: Assertion failed

  [81738.890625] [ cut here ]
  [81738.891706] kernel BUG at
/build/linux-hVVhWi/linux-4.4.0/fs/fscache/operation.c:494!

  6 == 5 represents an operation being DEAD when it was not expected to
  be.

  [Cause]
- There is a race in fscache and cachefiles.
+ There is a race in fscache and cachefiles.

  One thread is in cachefiles_read_waiter:
-  1) object->work_lock is taken.
- 2) the operation is added to the to_do list.
- 3) the work lock is dropped.
-  4) fscache_enqueue_retrieval is called, which takes a reference.
+  1) object->work_lock is taken.
+  2) the operation is added to the to_do list.
+  3) the work lock is dropped.
+  4) fscache_enqueue_retrieval is called, which takes a reference.

  Another thread is in cachefiles_read_copier:
-  1) object->work_lock is taken
- 2) an item is popped off the to_do list.
-  3) object->work_lock is dropped.
- 4) some processing is done on the item, and fscache_put_retrieval() is
called, dropping a reference.
+  1) object->work_lock is taken
+  2) an item is popped off the to_do list.
+  3) object->work_lock is dropped.
+  4) some processing is done on the item, and fscache_put_retrieval() is
called, dropping a reference.

  Now if the this process in cachefiles_read_copier takes place *between*
  steps 3 and 4 in cachefiles_read_waiter, a reference will be dropped
  before it is taken, which leads to the objects reference count hitting
  zero, which leads to lifecycle events for the object happening too soon,
  leading to the assertion failure later on.

  (This is simplified and clarified from the original upstream analysis
  for this patch at https://www.redhat.com/archives/linux-
  cachefs/2018-February/msg1.html and from a similar patch with a
  different approach to fixing the bug at https://www.redhat.com/archives
  /linux-cachefs/2017-June/msg2.html)

  [Fix]
- Move fscache_enqueue_retrieval under the lock in cachefiles_read_waiter. This
means that the object cannot be popped off the to_do list until it is in a
fully consistent state with the reference taken.
+
+
+ (Old sauce patch being reverted) Move fscache_enqueue_retrieval under the
lock in cachefiles_read_waiter. This means that the object cannot be popped off
the to_do list until it is in a fully consistent state with the reference taken.
+
+ (New upstream patch) Explicitly take a reference to the object while it
+ is being enqueued. Adjust another part of the code to deal with the
+ greater range of object states this exposes.

  [Testcase]
  A user has run ~100 hours of NFS stress tests and not seen this bug recur.

  [Regression Potential]
-  - Limited to fscache/cachefiles.
- - The change makes things more conservative (doing more under lock) so
that's reassuring.
- - There may be performance impacts but none have been observed so far.
+  - Limited to fscache/cachefiles.

[Bug 1784984] [NEW] Used custom partition, took me back to main page, clicked Install with Vista, crashed

2018-08-01 Thread Christopher Brech
Public bug reported:

I don't know how to collect any of the information the guidelines is
asking for when the only access I have is to the FireFox browser that
opened up. I only see a background and weird rectangular window that
isn't updating properly. So here's what I did:

Downloaded Lubuntu-18.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso using magnet torrent from
Ubuntu website. Used Rufus 3.1 (on a Windows 7 Pro machine) to load ISO
on to 4GB Lacie flash drive (Rufus claimed to download two libraries for
sys-something-er-other).

I got through to the Install with Vista, Delete Everything, or
Custom/Other options. I clicked install with vista first, but didn't
understand the mumbo jumbo it told me. So I tried custom. Looked similar
to Windows Disk/Partition Manager so I selected the space I unallocated
(about 7 GiBs) and chose the default format option (whatever that was,
never heard of it, again: Windows user, sorry).

It again took me BACK to the previous screen. Confused, I said screw it
and clicked OK through the Install with Vista option because that's the
obvious thing to do at that point. And then it crashed.

I am clueless why it crashed, because everything seems to be working
fine on this installer. Very impressive really! Full native
resolution, Wireless works great, keyboard and mouse work, if only
Windows installers were this nice.

I'll try the installer again, an installer this nice, it must be my
fault.

[Bug 1767918] Re: Login password from GDM is shown in plain text on the VT1 console

+
  I don't which package this applies to, but I believe the best bet is
  GDM.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Log-in using X11 login via GDM.
  2) Use the desktop for a while. (For some reason I cannot reproduce if I
login and then restart after a short while).
  3) In Gnome click System menu -> Power Button -> Restart
  4) Quickly press CTRL-ALT-F1
  5) I see my login password in plain text in the console. Once I saw the
login password repeated twice.

  See attached photo with the login password blanked out. Below the
  password is the console cursor.

[Bug 1784974] Re: Update mozjs52 to 52.1.9

2018-08-01 Thread Jeremy Bicha

  mozjs is Firefox's Spidermonkey JavaScript engine. mozjs52 is derived from

itself never got "official releases" from Mozilla.)

  By comparing the bug numbers in the release notes with the bug numbers

- it looks like the new release includes fixes for one or more memory
- safety bugs identified as CVE-2018-5188.

Do I need to remove them? As a last resort I can always format as ext4,
but then Windows will no be able to read the external drive.

  Hello, folks,

  Today when I returned to my computer (which I locked with Super+L) and
  attempted to unlock it, it displayed my passphrase in cleartext in the
  'Password' box. I noticed as soon as I got the first character in, then
  typed in the second character and it stayed clear. I then picked up my
  phone to record the attached video and while I was fiddling with it to
  get a good camera shot, the screen locked (for inactivity perhaps?) and
  when I unlocked this time, the password only displayed as dots (as
  expected).

  So unfortunately, I don't know how to replicate. It _did_ occur though,
  as the attached video will show if you go slowly (look for "hu", the
  first characters of legendary password "hunter2").

[Bug 1784964] Re: Regression due to CVE-2018-1116 (processes not inheriting user ID or groups )

2018-08-01 Thread TJ
It seems that /var/run/ConsoleKit directory and its database is only
created by console tty log-ins but not the GUI. There was no directory
after GUI Terminal shell started; only after switching to TTY1.

So it would seem this isn't the cause since PCs without ConsoleKit work
fine.

[Bug 1784976] [NEW] Unable to get publish dates from snapd API

2018-08-01 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

In the Snap Store website the channels are shown with publishing
information (see attached screenshot). They show when each channel was
last published. This information doesn't seem to be able to be accessed
from snapd, we just have:

"latest/stable": {
  "revision": "8011",
  "confinement": "strict",
  "version": "3.3",
  "channel": "stable",
  "epoch": "0",
  "size": 57212928
}

I propose we add a "published" field into the channel map to report
this.

[Bug 1784964] Re: Regression due to CVE-2018-1116 (processes not inheriting user ID or groups )

2018-08-01 Thread TJ
Looking at the diff between upstream 0.105 and Ubuntu's I happened to
notice the CKDB_PATH (ConsoleKit database path)
/var/run/ConsoleKit/database which seems to be consulted on some
occasions.

On the affected PC which was d-r-u-ed from 16.04 ConsoleKit 0.4.6-5 is
still installed and that database is present. On another PC that has a
clean 18.04 install that doesn't exist because consolekit is purely
virtual now.

I'm not sure if this is relevant or not but worth reporting.

The database contains (for the *good* session) :

[Seat /org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Seat1]
kind=0
sessions=/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session1
devices=

[Session /org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session1]
uid=1000
seat=/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Seat1
login_session_id=3
display_device=/dev/tty1
remote_host_name=
is_active=false
is_local=true
creation_time=2018-08-02T01:18:34.707417Z

[SessionLeader /org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session1]
session=/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session1
uid=0
pid=2494
service_name=:1.73

Note it references "display_device=/dev/tty1"

That is, I think, a reference to the TTY1 console login I did first. I'm
going to restart after writing this and check what is in the file if I
open the GUI Terminal shell first.

[Bug 1782614] Re: Upgrade to 3.28.3 and SRU it

2018-08-01 Thread Iain Lane
I had tagged .1 - in error since it wasn't accepted - when uploading it,
so it was easier on our side to upload a new revision with -v.

I guess you would prefer us to remove references to bugs that aren't
directly being SRUed. In this case it was a change between .1 and .2 so
I left it in. The bug is not nominated, which I intended to be an
indication of its status. I've done that before with other SRUs without
any problems, but if it is an issue then I will remove it when re-
uploading.

Sorry about the LP-Bugs-Fixed. I uploaded from a Debian packaging
directory on Ubuntu and I'd set DEB_VENDOR=Debian.

I'll take a look at the 3.28.3 proposal and probably upload that.

[Bug 1781826] Re: System logout when turn off the screen or suspend Ubuntu 18.04

2018-08-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1746340] Re: Samsung SSD corruption (fsck needed)

2018-08-01 Thread Lucas Zanella
Could you send me the patch (and should I use the aspm patch together
with it?)

Another information that you might find useful: I've been using for 30
days without any problems on the main machine (only one incident inside
the virtual machine), so today I decided to finally conclude all the
missing updates that I've been waiting to do since the problems arised.
It updated more than 1000 packages, and as before it gave the Read Only
error while updating initram. It seems that it ALWAYS happens when
updating initram.

Here's the output I was able to save: https://pastebin.com/raw/PaSQwRJN

So after 30 days without any problems it happens while doing this. It's
gotta explain something, because it's very unusual, and I've always had
problems with initram before.

[Bug 1784974] [NEW] Update mozjs52 to 52.1.9

2018-08-01 Thread Jeremy Bicha
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Impact
--
mozjs is Firefox's Spidermonkey JavaScript engine. mozjs52 is derived from
Firefox 52 ESR. 52.9 is the final scheduled release in the 52 series. (mozjs
itself never got "official releases" from Mozilla.)

By comparing the bug numbers in the release notes with the bug numbers
mentioned at https://github.com/mozilla/gecko-dev/commits/esr52/js/src/
it looks like the new release includes fixes for one or more memory
safety bugs identified as CVE-2018-5188.

GNOME Shell (Ubuntu's default interface in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS) requires
mozjs52. Nothing else in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS uses mozjs52.

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/advisories/mfsa2018-17/

Test Case
-
Install the update. Restart your computer. Log in and make sure the default
desktop still works.

Regression Potential

This is a minor release in the long-term support series. I count about 6
cherry-picked targeted commits.

Other Info
--
I believe the version in Ubuntu 18.10 (synced with Debian) goes back to
building with the distro's ICU library instead of the bundled version. Maybe we
should backport from 18.10 instead of a more minimal diff against the Ubuntu
version.

[Bug 1784964] Re: Regression due to CVE-2018-1116 (processes not inheriting user ID or groups )

2018-08-01 Thread Alex Murray
I can't reproduce this myself but I am using the default shell (bash
provided by dash) and gnome-terminal. My understanding of the change to
policykit-1
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/policykit-1/commit/?h=applied/ubuntu
/bionic-devel&id=840c50182f5ab1ba28c1d20cce4c207364852935 is that
previously the UID was supplied by the caller and used without
validation - instead now policykit tries to validate the supplied UID
against the actual UID of the subject - however this could change over
time and is racy - so there are a bunch of failure modes which this
change to policykit introduces which would previously have worked.

[Bug 1784970] [NEW] installation stopped at :'installing grub2 package...

2018-08-01 Thread Robert Jobin
Public bug reported:

I've installed mint18.3 first ...few months later I installed from
scratch mint19.3, today I tried several times installing from scratch
(usb image)and in the bios (Asrock z370 prof. gaming) when I went to set
the drive to boot from (usb, I already had 3choices..uefi 8.07, uefi
partition 1 8.07, and generic 8.07)I got one installed but was so
messed up that I had to start over again.I didn't think that installing
from scratch would mess with the grub thing...I'm really confused here.
Thank you.

[Bug 1784964] Re: Regression due to CVE-2018-1116 (processes not inheriting user ID or groups )

2018-08-01 Thread TJ
The quirk is more nuanced than I reported above.

This reports groups correctly:

1. GUI login
2. Switch to TTY, login
3. "groups"
4. Switch to GUI
5. Launch Terminal
6. "groups"

This only reports the username:

1. GUI Login
2. Launch Terminal
3. "groups"
4. Switch to TTY, login
5. "groups"

Tests done with /usr/bin/tmux as the user's shell and tmux default-shell
= /bin/bash which has been my standard configuration for several years
now with no problems.

[Bug 1784964] Re: Regression due to CVE-2018-1116 (processes not inheriting user ID or groups )

2018-08-01 Thread TJ
I've discovered another quirk:

If my first log-in after booting is at the TTY console (not GUI) the
groups show up correctly there *and* in a terminal in the Xorg GUI
session afterwards.

But if I first log-in to the GUI then log-in to the TTY console both
show only the user group.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1758243] Re: bumblebee needs configuration changes to work with nvidia-driver-390 and libglvnd0

I would recommend keeping the "nvidia_drm" and ”nvidia_modeset" aliases
since removing them caused me problems (system freezes after running
primusrun/optirun or loading the nvidia kernel module).
