A fix [1] in LXC was pushed recently and actually allows systemd daemon-
reexec without the cap sys_admin in a container.
We tested that it totally solved the issue for us.
Would it possible to move this bug report to the LXC project? And to ask for a
backport of such fix to Xenial LXC?

I found the problem yesterday.
The regression is that the gradient (which didn't appear at all before)
now only occupies the middle 50% of the screen. This means it looks
squashed and different to the login screen. The top and bottom 25% of
the screen are solid colours.
