[Bug 1807557] [NEW] Poor keyboard accessibility in the initial setup

2018-12-08 Thread Dan Dascalescu
Public bug reported:

I'm not a perfectly sighted user, but I have decent eyesight. However,
on a 1080p ThinkPad screen, I have a hard time distinguishing which
button is the default in a dialog box. There is a 1px wide orange border
around the default button, bit it's not easy to notice, at all.

In addition, in the Welcome dialog that asks about sending information
to Canonical, it's impossible to use the keyboard to navigate to the
"No" choice.

I need to use the keyboard because neither the touchpad nor the
trackpoint work -

[Bug 1697536] Re: nm strongswan gui doesn't have a way to enter pre-shared key

2018-12-08 Thread Bernhard VonZastrow
Same again with me. 16 character PSK, set by my company and is something
I have no control over.

Is this "strong key" requirement enforced in the GUI only? Or is it a
fundamental part of strongswan itself? I.e. could I circumvent it by
entering a longer (incorrect) key in the gui and then modify a config
file somewhere to hold the correct key?

I agree, this feels like a bug. If the server is set up to accept
(require) a shorter key, then the fact that the strongswan client is
unable to connect seems like an error.

[Bug 1696929] Re: Touchpads are unresponsive and laggy for small finger movements

2018-12-08 Thread Dan Dascalescu
I see a much worse version of this problem on my brand new ThinkPad X1
Carbon 6th gen: the mouse cursor moves/clicks only about 5% of the time
I use the touchpad. The Trackpoint doesn't work at all. Installing
Ubuntu was a keyboard-only affair, and I hoped that some updates would
fix this dealbreaker issue. In Ubuntu Budgie 18.04, the mouse worked
fine after the DE started up, but was frozen during the startup for ~30
seconds. So this isn't a hardware problem.

I've already installed xserver-xorg-input-synaptics and rebooted - no
luck.

What else can I try? The mouse responds normally but only ~5% of the
time I use the touchpad (move cursor, or tap/click).

[Bug 1807265] Re: Screen locking issue

2018-12-08 Thread Kevin Arnett
I would like to add that the bug occurs after swiping the notification screen
up.
The blank screen that usually shows with the password entry box shows but
without anything on it and the applications bar on the left is still showing.

After applying the most recent update the bug seems to be happening less often,
and only when the screen locks after not being used until it timed out.
I work remotely and use Remina, skype, slack and Chrome which are usually all
open when the issue occurs.

[Bug 1800264] Re: python3-libtorrent linking libboost_python27.so instead of libboost_python36.so

2018-12-08 Thread Andrew Starr-Bochicchio
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ Due to the libboost-python naming convention changing,
+ python3-libtorrent incorrectly links to libboost_python27.so instead of
+ libboost_python36.so in cosmic. The essentially renders the package
+ useless.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Run the command:
+
+ $ python3 -c "import libtorrent"
+
+ With 1.1.9-1 on cosmic, it will fail with:
+
+ Traceback (most recent call last):
+ File "", line 1, in
+ ImportError: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libboost_python27.so.1.67.0: undefined
symbol: PyClass_Type
+
+
+ The command should exit without error in the fixed version.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ There is little regression potential as the package is currently broken
+ without this fix.
+
+
+
An error occurs when importing the libtorrent module from python 3.x
  script:

  ImportError: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libboost_python27.so.1.67.0:
  undefined symbol: PyClass_Type

  How to reproduce:
  1. Install packages:
  python36
  python3-libtorrent
  2. Run any python script importing libtorrent module

  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.10

[Bug 1807534] Re: x session freezes randomly

2018-12-08 Thread Elmar Pruesse
Thank you, bot. If I knew which component caused this, I'd be a lot
further...

Since it is display related, Xorg, nvidia-driver, gnome-session, etc
come to mind. There are no crashed or segfaulted processes and unusual
error messages as far as I can tell, nor are there any processes
spinning at high cpu. I just can't interact with the system anymore.

[Bug 1807534] Re: x session freezes randomly

2018-12-08 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1807534/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1794899] Re: ghex both installed and not-installed

2018-12-08 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I am essentially a non-technical user, but open source appeals to me so
I am happy to contribute what I can. Unfortunately, the culture at
Ubuntu is incomprehensible to me and I have effectively given up. When
they say that Linux has a steep learning curve they are not joking, but
I am always prepared to learn. But then I find out incompatibilities
between apt, synaptic and "ubuntu software" and I throw up my hands in
disgust. And now there is snap installs which is different from regular
installs of which nobody told me. Do you people think I am clairvoyant
or what? So, no, I do not know what my problem is. I find something
that is wrong, I tell you about about, I expect you to fix it and I
refuse to accept responsibility for something that I don't understand.
If you want my cooperation then you will need to protect me from bugs
that should have been caught during testing.

[Bug 1807540] [NEW] When an external monitor is attached some windows protrude onto this new monitor

2018-12-08 Thread Alexander Kallenbach
Public bug reported:

I have connected an external monitor to my notebook. The display of the
new monitor had some windows protruding that were actually displayed in
maximized mode on the internal monitor (GNOME Calendar and Tasks). It
wasn't until I selected these windows that they retreated from the
external monitor and were maximized only on the internal monitor.

The windows should adjust their resolution immediately after the
connection and be displayed only on the internal monitor. There are many
cases where I don't want to show what's running on my internal monitor.

It's also interesting that when I attach an external monitor to an

[Bug 1807539] [NEW] Screen orientation is locked if external monitor is connected

2018-12-08 Thread Alexander Kallenbach
Public bug reported:

As described above. I'm using a Thinpad X1 Yoga. Normally the screen
orientation changes when I rotate the device or operate it in tent mode,
for example. Unfortunately, this does not work if an external monitor
(via HDMI) is connected to the device. In this case the screen
orientation is fixed, so that e.g. a change into the tent mode is no
longer possible.

It would be nice if the screen would still change its orientation
despite the attached external screen.

Public bug reported:

I ran into this first on a 16.04.5 install I have. I just retried it on
a new laptop with 18.04.1 with the same result.

When booting, I chose the advanced form, the rescue variant, and tried
to use its fsck option. This failed almost immediately. I'm attaching
a photo of the screen showing the error, but the text is

/lib/recovery-mode/recovery-menu: line 80: /etc/default/rcS: No such
file or directory

/dev/nvme0n1p5 is mounted.

e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting.

Thus there seems to be no point in having this fsck option because it is doomed
to fail. Well, at least in the absence of further guidance about how to use
this.

[Bug 1805978] Re: ubuntu_lxc test is failed with lxc-utils package not installed

2018-12-08 Thread Stéphane Graber
Well, the adt setup in this case just can't work, you can't tell apt to
install lxc-utils from -updates and liblxc1 from -proposed when they
have strict dependencies between them, you're just going to be getting
an apt failure.

There is a package called arc-theme in 18.04 LTS already. Does that work

LTS?

The lifetime of a Ubuntu LTS is 5 years rather than 10 :)

[Bug 1807534] [NEW] x session freezes randomly

2018-12-08 Thread Elmar Pruesse
Public bug reported:

(on Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS, all packages up do date)

For about 5 days now, I've been experiencing random freezes of the X
session.

When this happens, I can still move the mouse pointer and it does change
shape according to what it hovers above. Keystrokes or mouse clicks do
not have any effect though.

Alt-Ctrl-F1 just leads me to another visual login session, which I can
log into, but the screen remains black.

Pressing the power button does not lead to a controlled shutdown.

I can remotely log into the system via SSH, but could not find anything
amiss in Xorg.?.log or syslog or dmesg.

This is on an AMD Ryzen with a Nvidia GTX1070 using the binary drivers.
I tried upgrading from 390.77 to 390.87 from the drivers ppa, but that
didn't make much of a difference.

Curiously, at some point, I could trigger the freeze with the "eject"
key on my keyboard. The overlay would not be completely rendered, only
the grey box, but not the symbol. That works now, and my freezes are
only a few times a day, not every 20 minutes. But they continue to
occur.

I'm not certain where to look for the cause of this, help would be
appreciated.

probably just to start fresh with an 18.04 WSL install.

[Bug 1807499] Re: 30 seconds boot delay when root fs is on lvm

2018-12-08 Thread Eduard Hasenleithner
A the moment I can see following solutions:

(1)
Make the lvchange_activate function in
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/lvm2 a while loop which executes
the "lvchange" command repeatedly until the root LV appears

(2)
Utilize udevd to create the LV devices while wait-for-root is waiting for the
root LV to appear. A hack for doing so is to replace in
/lib/udev/rules.d/69-lvm-metad.rules the line 96
  ACTION!="remove", ENV{LVM_PV_GONE}=="1", RUN+="/bin/systemd-run /sbin/lvm
pvscan --cache $major:$minor --activate ay", GOTO="lvm_end"
with
  ACTION!="remove", RUN+="/sbin/lvm pvscan --cache $major:$minor --activate ay"

[Bug 1737608] Re: RPATH no longer respected for indirect dependencies

RPATH and RUNPATH are indeed not the same thing (which is where the
confusion in the LDDEBUG examples cited comes in). Comment #4 has a
good breakdown of why this is happening, but this is very much not a
glibc/ld.so bug.
