@vorlon: I added the missing SRU information to the bug description - please have a look. ** Description changed: - When the EP11 token of Opencryptoki is configured with STRICT_MODE or - VHSM_MODE (or both) in config file /etc/opencryptoki/ep11tok.conf then - C_Login may return CKR_DEVICE_ERROR. + SRU Information + + [Impact] + + An issue with passing the 'target_list' pointer (that hold data of the + adapters aka crypto cards) to the function 'handle_all_ep11_cards' (that + finally deals with all adapters in EP11 mode) can lead to an error. + + Hence dependent on the memory content, a failure can be caused in + processing all adapters in EP11 mode and will most likely cause the + "CKR_DEVICE_ERROR" error to be returned by C_Login when the + STRICT_SESSION and/or VHSM_MODE is enabled in the ep11tok.conf config + file. + + An upstream accepted commit is already available: + https://github.com/opencryptoki/opencryptoki/commit/1dae7c15e7bc3bb5b5aad72b851e0b9cd328bb0b + The commit id and patch is quite straightforward and compact and shows that fixing the way the target_list is passed to the handle_all_ep11_cards function at four places in the code solves this situation. + + Since this issue can break the EP11 functionality a fixing opencryptoki + version 3.10 and 3.11 is needed where this issue can occur. + + [Test Case] + + Setup an opencryptoki environment (with crypto adapter in EP11 mode) and + configure the EP11 token of with the keywords STRICT_MODE and/or + VHSM_MODE in config file /etc/opencryptoki/ep11tok.conf. + + Now run "pkcsep11_session show -slot 4" and enter the user pin. + It fails with the following message :"C_Login() rc = 0x30 [CKR_DEVICE_ERROR]" + + The opencryptoki trace shows lines like the following with corrupted + APQNs: + + 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6208 ep11tok] INFO: ep11tok_login_session session=1 + 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6074 ep11tok] INFO: Logging in adapter 2B8E.8EE0 + 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6127 ep11tok] ERROR: ep11_login_handler dll_m_Login failed: 0x6 + 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6074 ep11tok] INFO: Logging in adapter 00. + 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6127 ep11tok] ERROR: ep11_login_handler dll_m_Login failed: 0x6 + 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6074 ep11tok] INFO: Logging in adapter 00. + + [Regression Potential] + + The issue occurs while using opencryptoki and EP11 in mode STRICT_MODE or VHSM_MODE (or both) with a crypto card. + Crypto cards are available for different platforms - however, this case especially occurred while using CryptoExpress adapters on s390x. + + Since the changes in the patch are quite obvious and limited to just four lines (each with the same change), the regression risk can be considered as low. + Furthermore it fixes a function that is broken today, the situation will just be improved with having the fix in place - assumed that no problems that are not directly related to this fix will happen (like packaging or update). + + Since opencryptoki versions 3.10 and 3.11 are affected, the packages in (non-LTS) disco and cosmic need that fix. + In between the fix already landed in the current development release (disco) - just cosmic is left. + + A test with the fixed opencryptoki version from disco was successfully + done, too. + + __ + + + When the EP11 token of Opencryptoki is configured with STRICT_MODE or VHSM_MODE (or both) in config file /etc/opencryptoki/ep11tok.conf then C_Login may return CKR_DEVICE_ERROR. ---Steps to Reproduce--- Configure the EP11 token of Opencryptoki with keywords STRICT_MODE or VHSM_MODE (or both) in config file /etc/opencryptoki/ep11tok.conf Then run 'pkcsep11_session show -slot 4' and enter the user pin.It fails with 'C_Login() rc = 0x30 [CKR_DEVICE_ERROR]' The OCK trace shows lines like the following with corrupted APQNs: 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6208 ep11tok] INFO: ep11tok_login_session session=1 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6074 ep11tok] INFO: Logging in adapter 2B8E.8EE0 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6127 ep11tok] ERROR: ep11_login_handler dll_m_Login failed: 0x6 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6074 ep11tok] INFO: Logging in adapter 00. 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6127 ep11tok] ERROR: ep11_login_handler dll_m_Login failed: 0x6 11/23/2018 10:43:45 [ep11_specific.c:6074 ep11tok] INFO: Logging in adapter 00. [Bug 1814832] Re: Correct and/or improve handling of certain quiesced snapshot failures
Added an SRU Template here as well, while we did drive this more as an MRE in the past while I was cleaning up on Steve's request lets make all related bugs proper SRUs to be sure on the next round. ** Description changed: + [Impact] + + * Upstream identified an issue that can occur on aborted (or +due to communication issues while doing) quiesced snapshots. + + * Backport the upstream changes as part of our work getting the latest +10.3.5 to the latest Ubuntu LTS (Bionic) + + [Test Case] + + * This is hard to test, but fortunately VMWare who have the right setup +for this tested our change from a PPA. I'll ask for that again on SRU. +Never the less I'll outline roughly what is needed to trigger [1]: +1. Use the host side interface to trigger a quiesced snapshot +2. this is the hard part - have communication failures between vmtools + (guest) and VMX (host) while this is ongoing. +3. From the Hosts POV the operation is aborted, but vmtools sends a + manifest eventually +4. Receiving this will make VMX reply a error (as it didn't wait for + anything like it) +5. Finally this broke the state machine and in subsequent cases vmtools + will not send a manifest again + * Further related fixes make sure vmtoolsd give up if VMX aborted the +snapshot [2] and another [3] makes sure manifests are always sent to +avoid any desync between VMX and vmtoolsd + + [1]: https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/commit/a1306fcbb6de6eae5344d5d74747068ea89aa5fc + [2]: https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/commit/0c9174716ba828899418ba07efc3aab0bff004cc + [3]: https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/commit/c31710b3942f48b1c11ebde36f34e7e159d1cbf0 + + [Regression Potential] + + * This is quite a change to the snapshot handling, so in theory there a +regression has to be assumed. Due to a lack of testcases and expertise +on our side that was handed to VMWare itself who have a much wider +matrix of tests and setups to run them on. +This was tested and confirmed good (even before the change made +it upstream). + * Furthermore those kind of snapshots are relevant to those +who use them (and they most likely want the fix for reliability as you +could get into a state where no further snapshots were possible). But +OTOH the majority of users of the open-vm-tools package most likely +don't use the feature at all. Fortunately changes are local to only the +vmbackup functionality. + + [Other Info] + + * n/a + + --- + Customers may hit issues with quiesced snapshots under certain circumstances. This is fixed in a branch forked from 10.3.5: https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/tree/stable-10.3.5-quiesced- snapshot A more detailed description of the issue can be found in the individual commit messages. [Bug 1818473] Re: open-vm-tools-desktop: resolutionKMS plugins sometimes fails to load at boot
** Description changed: + [Impact] + + * The service for vmware base kernel mode setting fails sometimes (racy) +to work after boot, but suceeds when restarted. The reason is that +loading the required module is not always done in time. + + * This is fixed by a drop-in snippet extending open-vm-tools.service. +(Not modifying the base .service file as the service and the +drop in are owned by different packages). +This drop in makes the service ensuring the load of the module in the +ExecStartPre phase + + * Backport the change [1] as part of the regular backport we do +for the latest Ubuntu LTS + + [Test Case] + + * Due to the racy nature of this issue there isn't a great 100% +reliable test. But we can do something to at least try based on +retries. + + * install a VMware guest with e.g. Ubuntu Desktop and install +open-vm-tools-desktop + * Put that guest into a reboot loop for a while, but wait until Desktop +is fully up before that + * Checking resulution sucks (manual on each reboot) but without the fix +chances are (due to the race only chances) that the log contains the +error triggering, see /var/log/vmware-vmsvc.log +It will have: +[ warning] [resolutionCommon] resolutionCheckForKMS: No system +support for resolutionKMS. +While with the fix it should always work which looks like: +[ message] [resolutionCommon] resolutionCheckForKMS: System +support available for resolutionKMS. +[ message] [vmtoolsd] Plugin 'resolutionKMS' initialized. + + [Regression Potential] + + * I wondered first if a regression could be that for some users +this always failed and due to that now after the change they get +e.g. different guest resolution. But the race seems unable to be +reliable either way, so those users would today be flaky with/without +KMS working and the fix would make that reliable. Therefore that is +no regression but an actual fix for those users. + + * Also failing to load the module is not a (regressing) problem. +In our kernel packaging that module is only part of the -oem, +-lowlatency and all modules-extra-... packages. That said there +can be cases where e.g. running the virt kernels the modules isn't +available. But that will not make the service fail as it is using +the prefix "-" which means that if failing it still goes on to +start the service itself [2]. + + + [Other Info] + + * n/a + + [1]: https://github.com/bzed/pkg-open-vm-tools/commit/db2a3642d45 + [2]: https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd.service.html + + + --- + This is about the tracking of a bug that was reported and fixed in Debian (and thereby also Ubuntu 19.04 already) to also SRU that back as part of our open-vm-tools backports to latest LTS. + Related: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=915031 https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/issues/214 https://github.com/bzed/pkg-open-vm-tools/pull/13 ** Also affects: open-vm-tools (Ubuntu Cosmic) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: open-vm-tools (Ubuntu Bionic) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: open-vm-tools (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Fix Released ** Changed in: open-vm-tools (Ubuntu Bionic) Status: New => Triaged ** Changed in: open-vm-tools (Ubuntu Cosmic) Status: New => Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1818473 Title: open-vm-tools-desktop: resolutionKMS plugins sometimes fails to load at boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/open-vm-tools/+bug/1818473/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Steve, thanks for the review - let me try to clarify: IMHO it is mentioned in the changelog: To have vgauth be able start early - and not pull cloud-init back late - it is also required to drop default dependencies which according to VMware is fine to do so. [Bug 1818470] [NEW] Screen locking issue
Public bug reported: I started installation of new software (Sound Juicer). I went away from my computer (before the screen asking for PW to install new software appeared) for more than 30 minutes, and the computer suspended. I touched the keyboard to bring it out of suspend. It went into a strange state. The password dialog was visble. When I entered my password, it brought up the task bar, but no windows. I could click on tasks, see the names of windows if there were multiple ones open (like OpenOffice), close tasks, and start them, but nothing would show a window. I tried cancel, relogging in as myself, was finally forced to reboot. [Bug 714909] Re: compiz wobly windows plugin causes maximized windows to shiver when focused
so, I think I figured out why this was happening. in the Window Decoration settings, if your Active Shadow Radius is different from your Inactive Shadow Radius, then the windows wobble when alt tabbing between maximized windows. It looks like the wobbly windows considers the difference in size between the window shadows as a window resize and causes the wobble. If you set the Active Shadow Radius to be the same as the Inactive Shadow Radius, then the wobble on alt-tabbing to a maximized window goes away. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/714909 Title: compiz wobly windows plugin causes maximized windows to shiver when focused To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/714909/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
