[Bug 1829972] Re: Require improved hypervisor detection patch in Ubuntu 18.04

2019-05-26 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
** Description changed:

+ == Justification ==
+ The s390x early machine detection code check will set all the uknown
+ hypervisors to z/VM, this will cause crash for any non KVM, z/VM
+ system.
+
+ == Fixes ==
+ 03aa047e (s390/early: improve machine detection)
+ Patch can be cherry-picked into Bionic kernel.
+
+ Instead of setting all the other hypervisors to z/VM, it will only set
+ MACHINE_FLAG_VM if it matches the case.
+
+ == Tests ==
+ A test kernel could be found here:
+ https://people.canonical.com/~phlin/kernel/lp-1829972-s390x-early/
+
+ Boot tested on a s390x KVM node and verified by IBM as well.
+
+ == Regression Potential ==
+ Low, this just improves the detection logic and the changes are
+ specific to s390x.
+
+
+ == Original Bug Report ==
+
  This kernel commit is requested to be included into the bionic's 4.15.0
  LTS  kernel:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=03aa047ef2db4985e444af6ee1c1dd084ad9fb4c

  s390/early: improve machine detection

  Right now the early machine detection code check stsi 3.2.2 for "KVM"
  and set MACHINE_IS_VM if this is different. As the console detection
  uses diagnose 8 if MACHINE_IS_VM returns true this will crash Linux
  early for any non z/VM system that sets a different value than KVM.
  So instead of assuming z/VM, do not set any of MACHINE_IS_LPAR,
  MACHINE_IS_VM, or MACHINE_IS_KVM.

  This is required for a dedicated SSC exploiter

[Bug 1804786] Re: Garbage occurred when Playing the video in the Ubuntu Desktop Guide

2019-05-26 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Daniel:

The bug is about failures to view the gnome-getting-started-docs videos
via yelp. We (at least I) have learned that the videos can't be viewed
properly with certain combinations of graphics cards and drivers.

So besides nailing which hardware/driver combination the bug reporter is
using - and hopefully fix that issue - I think it's relevant to try to
estimate how many users are facing similar failures. Please note that
Ubuntu is shipped with a yelp icon in the dock, and the very first link
on the index page leads to the page with the videos.

Hi Paul,
I'll answer the first few bits here, but generally this seems to be a
different issue than the bug you replied on.
Not every 100% hang is the same :-)
I'd appreciate if - going further - you'd carry that to a new bug
report instead.

I still had a 18.04.1 Desktop guest around.
I cloned it and booted it as is to verify what I had before.
848x480 to 1920x1200
After an Upgrade to 18.04.2 it sees:
848x480 to 1920x1200 (The same list)

So I can not reproduce your issue as-is.
When you open a new bug for this could you please supply for both
good/bad cases these logs from your guest:
- ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log
- journalctl -b 0

Seems to be another independent issue of yours, if you happen to file
a bug this is another extra bug please.

No, they all come from the same place in the archive, there is no
updating "update one or the other".
Qemu got plenty of bug and security fixes since it got released in
18.04 - so yes there are some.
But that does not need 18.04.x - you just get it on upgrades.

As I said please file extra bugs so that we can leave this one here
alone until new data is found for the issue that really is meant to be
discussed here.

[Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend

2019-05-26 Thread Robin
Indeed my conclusion was wrong because I mixed up the versions. The bug
does affect some newer versions although it seems that it was solved in
the meantime before reappearing again.

To correct, I observed the following:

* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 4.18.0-15 (Tested using a Live install
of 18.04.2)
* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 4.20.17-042017 (Tested on my install
of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-13 (Tested on my install of 19.04
with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-15 (I used this version when I filed
the bug report some days after I installed Ubuntu on my laptop)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-16 (Tested on my install of 19.04
with an update from disco-proposed using apt-get)
* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 5.0.1-050001 (Tested on my install of
19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect newly build kernel version 5.1.5-050105 (Tested on my
install of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)

I conclude, that the bug was introduced between 4.20.17 and 5.0.0-13, then
solved between 5.0.0-16 and 5.0.1 only to be reintroduced in the most recent
build (5.1.5).
As you might notice, I am only a user, so I have limited skills. The change
might also come from something else but I did not purposely change any setting
or behavior while I tried the different versions. I tested the sound using the
button in the sound-settings of Ubuntu and Spotify (both after a fresh boot and
after suspend).

Hi,
I'm currently running ubuntu 18.04 with a 4.15 kernel and i can observe very
high cpu usage to the systemd-udevd deamon.

removing the rule :
ATTR{bInterfaceClass}=="03", ATTR{bInterfaceSubClass}=="01",
ATTR{bInterfaceProtocol}=="02", \
  ATTRS{bDeviceClass}=="00", ATTRS{idVendor}=="413c",
ATTRS{bmAttributes}=="e0", \
  RUN+="hid2hci --method=dell --devpath=%p", ENV{HID2HCI_SWITCH}="1"

Solved the high CPU usage eventhough my bluetooth card is not available
anymore (as not in hci mode)

It seems that the command hid2hci creates a bind/unbind loop in udev
that is looping trying to set the device in hci mode. (that what udevadm
monitor seems to show, looping from bind to unbind for the device)

I suspect a0085f2510e8976614ad8f766b209448b385492f introduced a
regression (i have not tried to revert it yet).

Please not that there also seem to be a bug in hid2hci.c from bluez l148 :
if (err == 0) {
err = -1;
errno = EALREADY;
}
Correcting this and recompile bluez desn't solve the issue as cpu usage remains
very high.

Using a 4.13 kernel result in a normal CPU usage, this seems a
regression in 4.14.

Other people seems to have the same issue, here is a bug report related to this
:
https://dev.solus-project.com/T5224

Thanks a lot for your support,

Mathieu Tournier

[Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend

2019-05-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like you made a typo there. The points you list suggest the
regression started between kernels 5.0.1 and 5.1.5:

* The bug does not affect kernel version 5.0.1-050001 (Tested on my install of
19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug does affect newly build kernel version 5.1.5-050105 (Tested on my
install of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)

Yet your original bug description suggests the bug is in version
5.0.0-15.16-generic too, as does your summary in comment #6. Those
conclusions conflict with the above listed findings, so please
clarify...

[Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend

2019-05-26 Thread Robin
I was now able to try a few different versions leading to the following results:
* The bug does not affect kernel version 4.18.0-15 (Tested using a Live install
of 18.04.2)
* The bug does not affect kernel version 4.20.17-042017 (Tested on my install
of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug does not affect kernel version 5.0.1-050001 (Tested on my install of
19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug does affect newly build kernel version 5.1.5-050105 (Tested on my
install of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)

So the bug must be introduced between 4.20.17 and 5.0.0-15.
I hope this can be a good starting point for troubleshooting.

If the issue also happens on it, a kernel bisection is required.

The wakeup issue can be cause by btusb, `modprobe -r btusb` may help.

[Bug 1829823] Re: libvirt-bin: during shutdown libvirt-bin is stopped before libvirt-guests causing hang

2019-05-26 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Attached is the debdiff for xenial, in the case the SRU to xenial
happens to keep libvirt in sync between xenial and trusty-mitaka.

I have done some additional testing in xenial, and I can confirm that
the upstart script is not even called, and the sysvinit script is used
instead. This means that there should be minimal regression risk, and it
is more of a nop for xenial.

If you are especially interested in xenial, I have prepared a test package in a
ppa here:

[Bug 1830531] Re: .local domain look ups do not trigger name publication

2019-05-26 Thread Dan Kortschak
Before I get a chance to look into this later today, I'd like to note
that the network device is not firewalling those packets since a few
days ago before I installed 18.04 on this machine it was behaving as
expected and the 16.04 machine mentioned in the OP is not being blocked
(it is on a slightly more restrictive policy than this one, but neither
block that port). As for the possibility of blocking outbound packets
from the machine itself, this seems most likely, however, as mentioned,
this is a new install and I have not added any firewalling policy that
would block them, suggesting that it's an out of the box setting.

I'll report back on these and the other tests when I am at that
location.

[Bug 1826051] Re: VMs go to 100% CPU after live migration from Trusty to Bionic

2019-05-26 Thread Paul Hawkins
Just starting to use QEMU/KVM VMs on Ubuntu 18.04.1 Desktop. Both host
and quest are same release.

Today after doing an ubuntu update to 18.04.2 on guest (apt update; apt
upgrade) and rebooting the VM its display resolution changed to 800x600
and it cannot be changed as no other resolution is given.

I can repeat this every time:
1. clone 18.04.1 vm
2. boot clone and check resolution is highest offer of many
3. apt update; apt upgrade; reboot
4. only 800x600 is avail.

Tried updating host to 18.04.2 but did not help. Beside same issue
above when I log out of guest VM gdm3 display manager screen is not
shown but only a black screen (user VMM on host to open VM)

Downloaded 18.04.2 iso and created new VM with it and got same issue.

Did see guest cpu at 100% after apt upgrade and then apt install of
xubuntu desktop.

I think I read in 18.04.2 QEMU has been upgraded (but maybe only in
18.04 server).

At a bit of loss now. I will have to rebuild the host to 18.04.1 and
start again.

Still new to QEMU/KVM, but not VMs in general. So maybe this is just a
newbie mistake around correct video config in VMM. I have tried several
of the others VMM gives but nothing helps.

experienced this on Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 with GNOME 3.19 - but that may be
due to the fact that this issue only comes up every so often (a few
times a week at the moment) and I haven't used it that much). The issue
being that for some reason suddenly for seemingly no reason unless I
interact with the top bar in terms of clicking on an option on it (e.g.:
the calender or Activities Overview buttons), I am unable to click on
any application, or even drag some files on the desktop, though if I go
to the bottom of my screen Docky does should which is on autohide so it
does allow some interaction, though interestingly not all as buttons
don't change colour that normally would when I go over them when my
machine is doing this funny thing.

Some have even said though that they have to completely restart gnome-
shell to temporarily get rid of the problem. I also experienced the
problem a lot on 3.16, but in 3.18, it is periodic in the week that I
experience it and it is several times, but not as much, and not as
blocking.

I initially reported this issue here, but thought I should also do so

[Bug 1830531] Re: .local domain look ups do not trigger name publication

2019-05-26 Thread Trent Lloyd
The most likely cause for this is that you have packets outbound on port
5353 firewalled either locally or on your network device. When another
host pings the address, the responses are sent via multicast and Avahi
caches that response, and so can then use it without having to transmit
a packet.

Until someone else looks it up, the cache is empty and the query packet
is blocked, so no resolution happens.

To confirm this, other than checking and clearing both iptables and
nftables, you could try run tcpdump on your host and then on another
host to see if you can see the packet generated locally, and then if it
actually arrives on the network.

Note that once avahi has the address in its cache, when it queries the network
for it, it includes that address in the packet as "Known Answer" and the other
host won't respond. So when testing this you are likely best to restart the
local avahi daemon to clear it's cache before each test. You can see those
"Known Answers" in the tcpdump though.

Best viewed with wireshark as it makes decoding the DNS part easy.

As a secondary test, I would suggest trying a different network adapter
(possibly wired instead of wireless, or vica-versa) - you can also get
these problems from weird drivers in some cases. Though usually broken
drivers prevent you from RECEIVING multicast, and so manifests that this
never works, so that seems unlikely in your case, but perhaps not
impossible.

As a third test try 'avahi-resolve-host-name' instead of ping, to
isolate if "avahi" / multicast is the issue, as opposed to the nss-mdns
layer.

Going to mark this Invalid for now, however, if you can show from the packet
dumps that the query packets are really not being sent at all even locally feel
free to set the status back to New for further investigation.

[Bug 1829400] Re: [Intel Core 2 Duo T7250] screen loop after suspension. Kernel 4.15 fails but 4.4.0 works.

2019-05-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
For any given version directory in https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D you need to download four files:

  linux-headers-*all.deb
  linux-headers-*generic*_i386.deb
  linux-image-*generic*_i386.deb
  linux-modules-*generic*_i386.deb

Then in a terminal in the Downloads directory run:

  dpkg -i linux*.deb

Then reboot and use either the Escape or Shift keys to enter the grub
menu (as soon as the purple screen appears). In those menus you can
choose which kernel to boot.

[Bug 1830516] Re: Avahi Printer advertisements are wrong (Avahi or CUPS?)

2019-05-26 Thread Trent Lloyd
This is a bug in CUPS ultimately, it's driving Avahi using the D-BUS API
(as opposed to manual service files in /etc/avahi/services, this is only
really used for a sysadmin to manually add services, most other types of
advertisements such as printers are expected to use the API to advertise
it).

Marking this against cups instead, you may also wish to consider filing it
upstream:
