[Bug 1838180] [NEW] apps use speakers when bluetooth headset is active (REGRESSION)

2019-07-27 Thread jimav
Public bug reported:

Bluetooth headset stopped working after upgrading to 19.04. Worked
perfectly with 18.10.

Now, when a BT headset is connected the volume-control widget (seen via
the speaker icon in the upper-right corner) displays a headset icon and
a volume slider, but the slider has NO EFRFECT on volume and sound still
comes out of the speakers.

It seems like the BT headset is active as far as the volume-control GUI
knows, BUT sound from apps still goes to the speakers (which were active
before the BT headset connected).

syslog shows: bluetoothd[1423]: connect error: Device or resource busy
(16)

I will attach the full syslog

The problem does not occur with a wired headset.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. Reboot
   Turn Bluetooth OFF (speakericon->BTicon->Turn Off)
2. Start Rhythmbox or other sound source; play something, set the volume low
but audible
(should be heard on speakers)
3. Turn on a Bluetoogh headset
4. Turn on Bluetooth in the computer (Speakericon->BTicon->Turn On)
If necessary, do other stuff to get the BT headset connected
A "headset icon" should appear next the volume slider (click speaker icon to
see it)

RESULTS: Sound continues to come out of speakers; nothing from BT headset
Moving the volume slider has no effect

EXPECTED RESULTS: Switch sound to the BT headset

[Bug 1838177] [NEW] bluetooth->settings causes gnome-shell assertion failure, then many video-releated msgs

2019-07-27 Thread jimav
Public bug reported:

Whenever the "bluetooth settings" screen is opened, an assertion failure
is logged from gnome-shell, followed by many video-related lines from
gdm-x-session (syslog extract attached). The first part looks like this:

gnome-shell[2872]: g_environ_setenv: assertion 'value != NULL' failed
/usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[2251]: (II) modeset(0): EDID vendor "NEC", prod id
26342
...

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. tail -f /var/log/syslog #in a terminal
2. In the upper-right top of the screen:
 Speakericon->Bluetoothicon->Gluetooth settings

RESULTS: BT settings window openens, and many messages logged to syslog
EXPECTED RESULTS: No assertion errors logged (unclear why anything should be
logged due to simply opening a window).

[Bug 1838176] [NEW] Kernel 5.2.3 fails to fully boot on Lenovo 330s-15arr, ideapad_laptop: Unknown event: 10

2019-07-27 Thread Kenji
Public bug reported:

Was on 4.20, booted fine (with the boot option ivrs_ioapic[32]=00:14.0)

Tried to boot 5.2.3 (but I believe this happened on 5.1.X too)

It will boot to a certain extent, it does my disk password, i can see
everything say "ok" when i do no quiet splash. But where it should go to
the login screen I just see a single cursor

Setting nomodeset lets me boot, looking at logs:

[Bug 1838146] Re: ntpd installation /etc/ntp.conf ~ hostnames listed do not exist on *.ntp.org

2019-07-27 Thread Paul Gear via ubuntu-bugs
On which version of Ubuntu did you experience this? Whilst the latest
LTS (18.04) and non-LTS (19.04) versions have moved the ntp package to
universe, they still ship with a fully working configuration. Here's an
example from a stock install on an AWS EC2 instance running disco
(19.04):

root@ip-172-31-7-27:~# grep ubuntu /etc/ntp.conf
pool 0.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org iburst
pool 1.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org iburst
pool 2.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org iburst
pool 3.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org iburst
pool ntp.ubuntu.com
root@ip-172-31-7-27:~# awk '/ubuntu/ {print $2}' /etc/ntp.conf | xargs -n1 host
0.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 142.147.92.5
0.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 12.71.198.242
0.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 45.76.244.193
0.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 104.168.88.15
1.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 27.124.125.252
1.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 129.250.35.250
1.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 129.250.35.251
1.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 13.55.50.68
2.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 144.48.166.166
2.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 203.7.149.149
2.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 103.38.120.36
2.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 103.76.40.123
2.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has IPv6 address 2404:cc80:166::166
2.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has IPv6 address 2407:f100:4:1::3
2.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has IPv6 address 2a00:fd80:::::ff2
2.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has IPv6 address 2001:19f0:5801:1daa:5400:1ff:fe95:cf80
3.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 220.158.215.20
3.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 27.124.125.251
3.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 103.38.120.36
3.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org has address 103.214.220.220
ntp.ubuntu.com has address 91.189.89.198
ntp.ubuntu.com has address 91.189.89.199
ntp.ubuntu.com has address 91.189.91.157
ntp.ubuntu.com has address 91.189.94.4
ntp.ubuntu.com has IPv6 address 2001:67c:1560:8003::c8
ntp.ubuntu.com has IPv6 address 2001:67c:1560:8003::c7

So for the stock configuration on released Ubuntu versions, this is
factually incorrect. Can you provide any further details to explain how
this is a problem?

[Bug 1814302] Re: Quasselcore apparmor profile issue in lxd container.

2019-07-27 Thread Robert Pendell
The above workaround isn't enough to totally resolve the issues with
AppArmor and this application inside LXD. I also had to switch to aa-
complain for PostgreSQL migration so features will have to be thoroughly
tested to identify it. I'm willing to setup a secondary instance to do
any testing that is necessary but I don't know anything about AppArmor
to fix the profile.

Added note: It seems that migration may be broken in Quassel-Core in
general but I'm reporting that on their tracker as it seems to be a bug
on their end but setting up for PostgreSQL seemed to work in complain
mode. It is untested in enforce mode.

2019-07-27 Thread Tom Lake
Please ignore the solution I commented, I committed a mistake and had
vdpau disabled.

But there's this update that hasn't been released by the server.

[Bug 1818881] Re: ath10k_pci crashing

2019-07-27 Thread Daniel C
I still hit this issue a few times per week, usually after resuming from
suspend.

I've attached the dmesg output from the most recent one (today). In this
instance, although the Wi-Fi was not working, I was still able to
interact with the system and shut it down cleanly. That's not always the
case - sometimes the running system is corrupted and I can't even
shutdown cleanly but have to do a hard power-off with the power button.

This is with all the latest updates applied on 19.04.

Kernel: Linux daniel-XPS-13-9380 5.0.0-21-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jul
2 13:27:33 UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Is there anything in the pipeline that will help with this? Any contacts
at Dell, or Qualcomm / Atheros?

This is after all a certified Ubuntu laptop.

[Bug 1837170] Re: Kodi package crash after the update of libdrm-amdgpu1

2019-07-27 Thread Tom Lake
Solution's found:

 ubuntu-meta (1.417.3) bionic; urgency=medium

  * Added dbus-x11 to wsl-recommends (LP: #1837466)

 -- Balint Reczey Wed, 24 Jul 2019 01:21:39 +0200

I found in the server this latest version of ubuntu-desktop and
installed the .deb file.

Indeed we see a correction for X11/xorg and everything works now.

However, I find odd that this package was uploaded on Thu Jul 25 21:52:21 to be
sent as an update:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/bionic-changes/2019-July/021433.html
http://mirrors.edge.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/u/ubuntu-meta/

But I received on my system this one

[ubuntu/bionic-updates] ubuntu-meta 1.417.2 (Accepted)

Uploaded on Thu Jul 25 19:44:55 UTC 2019

And probably everyone else!

2019-07-27 Thread Colin Ian King
Did a bisect on the drm i915 driver, came up with no root cause.
Did a full bisect between 4.18 and 4.20, bisected down to a PTI commit:

7757d607c6b3186de42e1fb0210b9c5d8b70 is the first bad commit
commit 7757d607c6b3186de42e1fb0210b9c5d8b70
Author: Joerg Roedel
Date: Wed Jul 18 11:41:14 2018 +0200

x86/pti: Allow CONFIG_PAGE_TABLE_ISOLATION for x86_32

Allow PTI to be compiled on x86_32.

This seems to make sense, it's x86_32 specific and explains the more
random nature of the crashes.

[Bug 1451286] Re: crontab -r deletes cron entries without asking for confirmation

2019-07-27 Thread Anonymous
I'm glad my initial stubborness is leading to this avalanche of users
echoing me. I feel all your pain, I have been there and it sucks!

I would suggest this update/patch needs to go into not only the new
versions of Ubuntu, but also the LTS distribution repos also, as a
stability bugfix.

I made a ticket in the Mint repos about the bug called systemd and they
insta-banned me, lol. I still run Ubuntu 14.04 because I am not
interesting in running systemd as pid1, or at all. I'll probably be off
to slackware soon.

It's been real, Ubuntu.

[Bug 1572363] Re: Gnome-terminal-server missing icon

2019-07-27 Thread Andre Ruiz
Humm, actually this happens only when using byobu and the terminal is started
through it's icon, if I start the terminal directly it works ok. So this may be
related to byobu and not the terminal itsef. Sorry for the noise.

[Bug 1838155] [NEW] Getting rid of /bin has broken amgtar

2019-07-27 Thread Ian Turner
Public bug reported:

amgtar checks the realpath (i.e., resolving symlinks) before running
sensitive binaries such as /bin/tar with elevated privileges. Moving the
tar binary from /bin/tar to /usr/bin/tar breaks this check.

This results in the following error when trying to run /bin/tar under privilege:
amgtar: '/bin/tar' binary is not secure

The obvious fix is to change the compiled-in tar path to /usr/bin/tar
instead of /bin/tar. This can be done by passing the GNUTAR environment
variable to the configure script.

As a workaround, one may update /etc/amanda-security.conf file to
whitelist /usr/bin/tar.

[Bug 1838154] [NEW] Simply snapping terminal window from the outside the screen fixes thermal build up

2019-07-27 Thread klfyt
Public bug reported:

If you snap terminal window from the outside of screen area
against the left edge of screen then heat build up stops.

Or in other words terminal either stops heating or
gives somehow unknown cooling benefit. Which should be
really strange.

[Bug 1829310] Re: kernel 5 fails to start systemd-networkd on old Dell Inspiron 1720

2019-07-27 Thread vatbier
a few weeks ago I have been able to build dkms nividia 340 kernel module for
mainline build 5.1.16.
Install NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.107 with kernel 5.0 and 5.1 patches from
https://pkgs.rpmfusion.org/cgit/nonfree/nvidia-340xx-kmod.git/log/ (I had to
fix one of the patches myself) with ubuntu's mainline kernel 5.1.16.
I also had to extract the *custom.run to disable compiling of uvm (dkms.conf
and Makefile).

[Bug 1820173] Re: Screen brightness buttons change gain instead of brightness

2019-07-27 Thread Douglas Silva
I have a similar netbook called Dell Inspiron 11 3162 in which this is
reproducible. Changing brightness with the FN (function) key
combinations change the gamma of the screen instead of the actual
brightness. It's a fake brightness change, like the one Redshift can do
if you're familiar with it.

If I go to the settings and open Brightness, I can move the slider there
and change the brightness as expected. It's just the key combination
that doesn't work as we expect.

I have tested Lubuntu 19.04 and Fedora 30 LXQt in their default
settings. In both this is reproducible.

I don't have these systems installed right now. I might try Lubuntu
19.04 in the coming days and attach the requested log files here.

[Bug 1831831] Re: Touchpad does not respond IdeaPad L340

I did
$ sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-18.04-edge [Version (5.0.0.20.76)]
and reboot, but the touchpad still doesn't respond.

Because I'm nosy, I booted the Daily-Build-Image "eoan-desktop-amd64"
(last modified 2019-07-26) and the touchpad worked. It's a long time
until October 2019 but it seems, that the touchpad will work with Ubuntu
19.10.

[Bug 1838152] [NEW] gnome-shell freezes on notification arrival (fixed upstream)

2019-07-27 Thread Luca
Public bug reported:

Sometimes certain notifications make the desktop unresponsive for a few
seconds and then gnome-shell crashes and all extensions are reloaded.

I have found an upstream bug with a patch, but it's probably not in the
Ubuntu's package. I thought of creating an issue in case it is something not
known.
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/470

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/commit/86a00b6872375a266449beee1ea6d5e94f1ebbcb

In my case it happens only with the notifications of gsconnect and maybe
android studio.
I have reproduced the problem in gsconnect in case it helps.
https://github.com/andyholmes/gnome-shell-extension-gsconnect/issues/549

the error is:
lug 27 19:55:56 ghv gnome-shell[4071]: Object Meta.Background (0x55ce6b4cf300),
has been already deallocated - impossible to access it. This might be caused by

[Bug 1838151] [NEW] Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing wide band speech support.

2019-07-27 Thread Jeffrey Nappi
Public bug reported:

Bluetooth HSP/HFP audio quality is poor on Ubuntu comparative to all
other major platforms (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS).

Modern Bluetooth headsets (such as the Bose QC series headphones, many
others) are capable of using HFP 1.6 with mSBC 16kHz audio encoding. As
it currently stands, Ubuntu defaults to only supporting HSP headsets
using 8kHz CVSD, and is incapable of supporting HFP 1.6 at this time.

The ChromiumOS team recently tackled this issue -
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843048

Their efforts may assist in bringing this to Ubuntu, however it appears
that there are quite a lot of differences considering they have
developed their own audio server solution etc.

The Bluetooth Telephony Working Group published the HFP 1.6 spec in May
2011 -
https://www.bluetooth.org/docman/handlers/downloaddoc.ashx?doc_id=238193

Patches have been proposed in the past for this issue to the kernel and
PulseAudio:

PulseAudio: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/245272/
Kernel: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg76982.html

It appears that the Chromium OS team applied the same kernel patch:

[Bug 1838147] [NEW] ntpd installation /etc/ntp.conf ~ hostnames listed do not exist on *.ntp.org

2019-07-27 Thread Dr. Simon A. Roberts
Public bug reported:

When you install 'ntp' the /etc/ntp.conf it writes refers to the
following:

 - *.ubuntu.ntp.org

This hostname name and subdomain doesn't exist, it would be better if
you just import and write http://ntp.snails.email/v1/ntp.conf
alternatively make a file that randomly selects the pool and server from
http://ntp.snails.email/v1/online.json --> so you download the .json,
and then have somewhere on *.ubuntu.com that has a ntp.conf it will and
randomly compile alist of pool items from the .json --> this will stop
chronologistic buffering convulsive environments...

2019-07-27 Thread Srijan Kumar Sharma
Public bug reported:

intel_pstate not working. CPU frequency fixed at 800MHz.

I've tried to modify frequency using "cpufreq-set" and also by directly
writing to files in "/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/*" to no
success.

I tried different versions of kernel, it started working on 4.17.0 but
stopped working soon. These are the versions I tested.

[Bug 1771185] Re: Secondary monitor not connecting in 18.04 LTS

2019-07-27 Thread Ruslan Sadikov
I have similar problem.

Acer Aspire VN7-792G with Nvida GeForce 960M and Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS.
Try to connect to monitor Asus vx239h.

Sometimes it turns out to connect a second screen as an extension of the
screen, for example, if you go into console mode and return. It works
for a while, when you try to enter Settings, the screen turns off.

[Bug 1830422] Re: Shell boxpointer menus don't have scroll buttons when they exceed the screen height

2019-07-27 Thread Amr Ibrahim
I'm also affected by this bug in Ubuntu 18.04. I'm using Diodon the
clipboard manager. Its appindicator menu does not scroll down when the
clipboard entries exceed the height of the screen.

[Bug 1705820] Re: Wrong build when kernel upgrade (about kernel header path)

2019-07-27 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Ernst, you can apply Mabins patch with these commands:

- cd /tmp/ && wget
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/330175838/rtl8812au-4.3.8.12175.20140902+dfsg.patch
- cd /usr/src/
- sudo patch -p0 < /tmp/rtl8812au-4.3.8.12175.20140902+dfsg.patch

After the next kernel upgrade the rtl8812ae module should be
automatically built for the newly installed kernel version.
