[Bug 1838939] Re: Add alias to support Microsoft Azure RDMA device via MLX4

2019-08-07 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
FYI - this can be pre-tested to work against PPA [1]. I'd be very happy if one
could
a) do that test if it is sufficient
b) dump the steps to test here then so that we can complete the SRU template to
get things started

[1]: https://launchpad.net/~paelzer/+archive/ubuntu/bug-1838939-rdma-
azure-mlx4

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

-  * Azure RDMA devices are driven by MLX4 driver (which I assume those
-    devices are derived from).
+  * Azure RDMA devices can be a "Network Direct" version of the MLX
+InfiniBand card that is exposed to the guest and they need to be
+handled by the MLX4 driver.
But to be enabled properly the system needs to detect them as such.
That was added in rdma-core v20 hence being fix released in >=Disco.

   * Fix [1] is just a new alias to detect the card as what it is.

  [Test Case]

   * TBD: Try to use rdma on "Microsoft Azure RDMA device".
It would be great if someone could add some real content here.

  [Regression Potential]

   * a) The regression potential should be minimal. Existing systems either
already match the HCA table or they don't (neither before nor after the
fix. An issue I could think of is if there are devices that announce as
vmbus:3daf2e8ca732094bab99bd1f1c86b501 but are NOT in fact
this device type - they would then run into issues.
   * b) Of course the fix will "enable rdma support on some more devices" if
someone had those devices attached but didn't use/configure them they
might now initialize a bit further. But that isn't
an issue and especially in cloud environments where HW config is just a
click away no one usually pays for extra devices without using them.
- * c) I happen to know that for DPDK usage of these devices several fixes
-in later rdma-core are preferred or even needed. I'm not sure about the
-usage in this case - but enabling could expose those issues which
-formerly were hidden behind the "not supported" misdetection of the
-card.

- For B) and C) I'd want Microsoft to ack and test this from a PPA and do
+ For B) and C) I'd want Microsoft to ack and test this from a PPA and do
the verification on this - to be not only ok for this but for for Azure
  in general.

  [Other Info]

   * This falls under the SRU exception of "other safe cases" for "For Long
Term Support releases we regularly want to enable new hardware". New
modaliases are explicitly listed there as cases for this.

+ * This is reported to work in 16.04, but not as a classic "this commit
+broke it regression". Back then the world of rdma/infiniband just
+worked totally different as it was before the big revamp into rdma-core
+never the less one could see that (abstract, not caring about details)
+as an update-regression when going 16.04 to 18.04.

[Bug 1839236] Re: failed to configure linux-firmware in minimal cloud image based vm in cloud-init: Can't open /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf

2019-08-07 Thread You-Sheng Yang
>From the full log, the original minimal cloud image doesn't have
initramfs-* packages installed in the first place. So when it's
configuring linux-firmware, all those tools are in unpacked state except
initramfs-tools-bin has been full setup then. So this happened in some
intermediate state that initramfs-tools is not fully configured yet, and
maybe some other dependencies, checks should be added in either
initramfs-tools or linux-firmeware.

[Bug 1838555] Re: nvme-cli 1.5 in Bionic does not support Micron NVME drives

2019-08-07 Thread Matthew Ruffell
** Description changed:

- [impact]
+ [Impact]

This was discovered at a customer site and affects all of their Bionic
- installs that have Micron NVME drives.
+ installs that have Micron NVMe drives.

The version of nvme-cli present in Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver (1.5-1)
- does not include support to manage updating the firmware on Micron NVME
- drives.
+ does not include support to manage updating the firmware on Micron NVMe
+ drives. The missing support also means that the customer cannot format
+ their block size to 4k, as needed by Ceph.
+
+ Version 1.6-1 and later versions do include this support, and can be
+ used by rebuilding the package from upstream source as a static binary.
+ This is not ideal, but a workaround.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Install nvme-cli from Bionic, and attempt to update firmware for any
+ Micron NVMe drive, using a command similar to the below. It will fail,
+ as the drive is not supported.
+
+ $ nvme micron select-download /dev/n1 --fw
+ ./Micron_9200_FW-101008S0.tar --select=ALL
+
+ With the upstream commit patched into place, we can verify the
+ subcommands function with:
+
+ $ nvme micron
+
+ This will display the help screen and a list of supported commands.
+
+ $ nvme micron select-download
+
+ This will show the help page for firmware updating, and required
+ arguments. Running again with the arguments from the first example will
+ update the firmware on the drives successfully.
+
+ You can find a test package for Bionic here:
+
+ https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf237119-test
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ The opportunity for regression is low. The Micron support is implemented
+ as a plugin for the application and the changes are more or less
+ standalone. The code paths can only be accessed via "nvme micron"
+ subcommands.
+
+ If a regression happens, then users should refrain from running "nvme
+ micron" commands while the package is fixed.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ The commit that adds support for Micron drives is:
+
+ commit 0124daa3331602365d009a9e8229454c41931c07
+ Author: Stephen Tubbs
+ Date: Wed May 9 07:06:03 2018 -0700
+ Subject: Add support for Micron plugin
+
+ https://github.com/linux-nvme/nvme-
+ cli/commit/0124daa3331602365d009a9e8229454c41931c07
+
+ This commit landed in version 1.6, and is present in the following
+ distros:

  $ rmadison nvme-cli -a amd64
- nvme-cli | 1.5-1 | bionic/universe | amd64
- nvme-cli | 1.6-1 | cosmic/universe | amd64
- nvme-cli | 1.7-1 | disco/universe | amd64
+ nvme-cli | 1.5-1 | bionic/universe | amd64
+ nvme-cli | 1.6-1 | cosmic/universe | amd64
+ nvme-cli | 1.7-1 | disco/universe | amd64
+ nvme-cli | 1.7-1 | eoan/universe | amd64

- Version 1.6-1 and later versions do include this support, and can be
- used by rebuilding the package from upstream source as a static
- binary... not ideal, but a workaround.
-
- In lieu of pulling 1.7 from Disco back into Cosmic -> Bionic, can we
- cherry-pick this specific commit and backport it into 1.5 in Bionic?
-
- Or, can we do a micro-release of 1.6 into Bionic?
-
- https://github.com/linux-nvme/nvme-cli/releases/tag/v1.6
-
- [test case]
-
- Install nvme-cli from Bionic, and attempt to update firmware for any
- Micron NVME drive, using a command similar to the below. It will fail,
- as the drive is not supported.
-
- nvme micron select-download /dev/n1 --fw ./Micron_9200_FW-
- 101008S0.tar --select=ALL
-
- [other info]
-
- The specific commit that adds the needed support for these drives
- appears to be:
-
- https://github.com/linux-nvme/nvme-
- cli/pull/353/commits/0124daa3331602365d009a9e8229454c41931c07
+ There is a minor backport required for the commit into version 1.5, and
+ that is in the Makefile. Some other plugins which are not currently
+ present are in the patch, and needed to be removed from the OBJS line.

[Bug 1839253] Re: Excessive screen tearing and flickering

2019-08-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. The videos seem to show this is a problem with aligning the
entire display image. So it's not traditional "tearing", but I totally
agree that "tearing" and "flickering" is the best description.

Please try logging in to "Ubuntu on Wayland" and tell us if that avoids
the problem.

Please also try installing a newer kernel such as:

  https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.3-rc3/

If the problem still continues then please open a Terminal window and
run:

  dmesg -w

Now do you see any new messages appearing in that window when the
flickering happens?

[Bug 1838796] Re: TPM event log does not contain events measured after ExitBootServices

2019-08-07 Thread Tyler Hicks
Hi Jordan - This seems like a nice enhancement and something that will
be in Ubuntu once we are shipping a kernel that's v5.3 or newer. I don't
expect that we'll backport these patches to our stable releases that
ship kernels older than v5.3. This seems to reflect the TPM subsystem
maintainer's thoughts as he did not target these patches for linux-
stable.

If you feel like these patches should be backported, please provide
additional justification. Otherwise, we'll have this functionality in a
future release. Thanks!

[Bug 1838796] Re: TPM event log does not contain events measured after ExitBootServices

2019-08-07 Thread Tyler Hicks
** Description changed:

  The TPM event log (/sys/kernel/security/tpm0/binary_bios_measurements)
does not contain any events that are measured by UEFI after the kernel's
  EFI Boot stub calls ExitBootServices().

This means that PCR values calculated from the event log will not match
the actual PCR values on the machine for PCR indices into which these
  events are measured.

[Bug 1839394] Re: snapd services fails to upgrade on fresh ubuntu install

2019-08-07 Thread Tom Reynolds
I assisted (or tried to) oikasd on IRC with this a little today.

initially, oikasd ran "sudo apt-get upgrade" and apt seemed to get stuck
(no further lines of output for several minutes) after these lines (full
output not available):

snapd.failure.service is a disabled or a static unit, not starting it.
snapd.snap-repair.service is a disabled or a static unit, not starting it.

At this time (while waiting for this to finish), the attached log was
generated from a separate virtual terminal.

As the "apt upgrade" command remained stuck on the first terminal, we
suggested pressing Ctrl-C, which then returned to a command prompt.

At this point, another volunteer pointed oikasd to
https://askubuntu.com/a/1039685 - which seemed to help.

This is a freshly installed ubuntu, and instantly gets messed up. [..]
I literally installed this ubuntu half an hour ago
how did you install, and what (type of ubuntu installer, exact
version) did you install exactly?
I used the hyper-v quick create in windows 10 1903 [installing Ubuntu
18.04.2].
oikasd: ooh.. does this mean this is "easy" to reproduce? install
windows, install hyper v, install ubuntu, upgrade, and *BAM* snapd fails?
yea, its happened both times i've done it.

[Bug 1839392] Re: backlight doesnt work

2019-08-07 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be
a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the
support tracker. We understand the difficulties you are facing, but it
is better to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are
bugs.

You can also find help with your problem in the support forum of your
local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at
https://askubuntu.com or https://ubuntuforums.org. For help on reporting
bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

fyi: I have just installed 18.04(.3) a couple of times in the last 3-4
days and keyboard backlight worked on machines that had it, so it's
likely an issue with your specific machine in my opinion. I think you
are better served with a question which will provide help for you,
instead of getting a problem fixed for future releases.

[Bug 1836816] Re: Fix nf_conntrack races when dealing with same origin requests in NAT environments

2019-08-07 Thread Matthew Ruffell
I installed linux-hwe 4.15.0-57 #63~16.04.1-Ubuntu on xenial.

I have run the reproducers on both bionic and xenial, and both have
positive results. This has been tested in the kubernetes environment
which had issues, and is performing well.

I am happy to mark this as verified for xenial.

[Bug 1836971] Re: sched: Prevent CPU lockups when task groups take longer than the period

2019-08-07 Thread Matthew Ruffell
I installed linux-hwe 4.15.0-57 #63~16.04.1-Ubuntu on xenial, placed a
heavy load on the system.

Everything seemed stable and no lockups occurred. Due to the successful
tests in the hadoop environment under bionic and the nature of this
patch being from upstream stable, I am happy to mark this as verified
for xenial.

[Bug 1762940] Re: hibmc-drm Causes Unreadable Display for Huawei amd64 Servers

2019-08-07 Thread Matthew Ruffell
I installed linux-hwe 4.15.0-57 #63~16.04.1-Ubuntu on xenial, and
ensured the -modules and -modules-extra package was installed.

I went into /var/lib/modules/4.15.0-56/ and did a search for hibmc_drm.
There was no mention apart from a header Makefile. The module was not
built and not present on amd64.

Tests have been successful on bionic, so I am happy to mark this as
fixed for xenial.

[Bug 1832265] Re: py3: inconsistent encoding of token fields

2019-08-07 Thread Drew Freiberger
@kingttx You will only need to add this to all the keystone charm's
units. Then run apt-get upgrade to install the updated keystone*
packages, and lastly run 'service apache2 restart' in order to reload
the wsgi scripts.

We have tested both bionic-rocky-proposed and bionic-stein-proposed with
success.

[Bug 1839353] Re: Login screen and desktop corruption (18.04.2)

2019-08-07 Thread Mustafa Erdogan
Fresh installed Ubuntu 19.04. setup gone fine. no login or boot screen
corruption. just at first time logged in there was corruption on desktop
same as i faced 18.04. after i ran "sudo apt update && sudo apt full-
upgrade" and rebooted, desktop is fine. but there is no transparent
effects on top bar and dock, just black background.

also noticed that i cant watch Netflix. Firefox version is 68.0.1 which
most recent version in Ubuntu and suppose to play movies in Netflix. i
am getting Error Code: F7111-1331. cant play videos on other html5 based
website. just youtube working fine.

It's all done on kernel v5.2, which is fully bootable and working.
The conclusion is that Ubuntu from 16.4.3 till now and all Live CD are
unusable, because they are using buggy kernel's >= 4.10 && kernel's < 5.2.
They should be patched.

Re: [Bug 1839253] Re: Excessive screen tearing and flickering

2019-08-07 Thread Ethan Walker
It's not clear to me how to change the driver to 'modesetting'.

What I did was edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel-graphics.conf
and changed the line:
Driver "intel"
to
Driver "modesetting"
and I didn't see any change.

[Bug 1839380] Re: Nautilus freezes when restoring files and a copy already exists

2019-08-07 Thread EoflaOE
Fixed the description so it reflects more to the bug, as well as the
reproduction steps.

** Description changed:

I have trashed the hidden file using nautilus to the trash bin, be it
the hidden configuration file for XScreenSaver that is compiled from
- source, and when it regenerated the hidden file, it is regenerated with
- old config.
+ source, and it regenerated the hidden file in the same location that I
+ have deleted the old copy in.

- I attempted to restore the file, but Nautilus freezes. It should give me
+ I attempted to restore the file, but because the file with the same name
+ is originated on the same location, Nautilus freezes. It should give me
the "Replace file with newer version" dialog so I can decide if I want
to replace the old file with the new one, or if I want to rename the
trashed hidden file to another name. It shouldn't freeze.

- However, the freeze only happens if the old file is in the trash, the
- new file is located in the original directory, and both files have same
- names.
+ Here's the clearer example. Suppose that...
+
+ 1. I created a file named "test.txt" on "/home/eofla",
+ 2. I put it to the trash bin,
+ 3. I repeated Step 1, and
+ 4. I attempted to restore the same file that was on the trash.
+ 5. Nautilus freezes.

[Bug 1839380] Re: Nautilus freezes when restoring hidden or normal file

2019-08-07 Thread Paul White
The bug isn't to do with just restoring files as that works perfectly.
The bug is restoring files back to where it was deleted from and a copy
of the file already exists. I think the bug description needs to reflect
that so I'm going to change it again.

** Summary changed:

- Nautilus freezes when restoring hidden or normal file
+ Nautilus freezes when restoring files and a copy already exists
