2019-10-13 Thread thebravoman

[Bug 1847806] Re: eoan: ppc64el install on pseries-eoan VM fails to install

2019-10-13 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Trying to help with the cpu type here - the default for the mentioned config
will be:
/usr/bin/qemu-system-ppc64le -name
guest=ubuntu19.10-ppc64le-test,debug-threads=on ...
  -machine pseries-eoan,accel=tcg,usb=off,dump-guest-core=off ...

Without an explicit -cpu option set.

The libvirt XML just has no section as all.

The default qemu picks in that case in the past was:
PowerPC power8_v2.0  PVR 004d0200
PowerPC power8   (alias for power8_v2.0)

Checking the qemu code shows:
4363 static void spapr_machine_3_1_class_options(MachineClass *mc)

4370 mc->default_cpu_type = POWERPC_CPU_TYPE_NAME("power8_v2.0");

With the code we can map this
(qemu versions go into the machine type, so xenial would be 2.5, bionic 2.11,
...):
new: power9_v2.0
<3.1 power8_v2.0
<2.7 power7_v2.3

So in the setup here it should be power9_v2.0 while in any release
before Eoan it would have been power8_v2.0.

I'd expect P9 should be P8 compatible, but maybe that helps in debugging this.
Downloading a ppc64 image for testing on my own ...

[Bug 1847948] Re: Improve NVMe guest performance on Bionic QEMU

2019-10-13 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
The kernel part of this is in since 4.16 so it either needs a HWE kernel
or to add a kernel Task to backport the related change for the kernel as
well. I'll add a task but it depends the Kernelteam (doability) and the
reporters request (for which kernel it is needed).

[Bug 1847948] Re: Improve NVMe guest performance on Bionic QEMU

2019-10-13 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
For Qemu the code is in 2.12, therefore as requested we only need to
consider Bionic.

@Murilo: do you have a good testcase for this to verify the bug when it became
an accepted SRU?
Could you outline what has to be done and if it requires special HW or a rather
complex setup maybe even commit to do the tests then?

[Bug 1837934] Re: There is no warning to remove install media when rebooting

2019-10-13 Thread Chris Guiver
This is likely unhelpful, but Lubuntu doesn't use `ubiquity` (calamares
instead) and has had this issue awhile too. I just tested with current
2019-10-12 (22:30) ISO
(following cut/paste from QA-test comments)

hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)
re-install with sole purpose of looking for
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1837934 so as to make
comment. I have noted the behavior before (with xubuntu too), but when I asked
if it was an issue on IRC, didn't get response (or told it'd been noted before
[on xubuntu-devel I think]) so it was just noted in comments awhile in these QA
tests & then ignored...

That might explain why this has passed with Disco.

[Bug 1847948] [NEW] Improve NVMe guest performance on Bionic QEMU

2019-10-13 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

== Comment: #0 - Murilo Opsfelder Araujo  - 2019-10-11 14:16:14 ==

---Problem Description---
Back-port the following patches to Bionic QEMU to improve NVMe guest
performance by more than 200%:

?vfio-pci: Allow mmap of MSIX BAR?
https://git.qemu.org/?p=qemu.git;a=commit;h=ae0215b2bb56a9d5321a185dde133bfdd306a4c0

?ppc/spapr, vfio: Turn off MSIX emulation for VFIO devices?
https://git.qemu.org/?p=qemu.git;a=commit;h=fcad0d2121976df4b422b4007a5eb7fcaac01134

---uname output---
na

---Additional Hardware Info---
0030:01:00.0 Non-Volatile memory controller: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd NVMe
SSD Controller 172Xa/172Xb (rev 01)

Machine Type = AC922

---Debugger---
A debugger is not configured

---Steps to Reproduce---
 Install or setup a guest image and boot it.

Once guest is running, passthrough the NVMe disk to the guest using the
XML:

host$ cat nvme-disk.xml

host$ virsh attach-device  nvme-disk.xml --live

On the guest, run fio benchmarks:

guest$ fio --direct=1 --rw=randrw --refill_buffers --norandommap
--randrepeat=0 --ioengine=libaio --bs=4k --rwmixread=100 --iodepth=16
--runtime=60 --name=job1 --filename=/dev/nvme0n1 --numjobs=4

Results are similar with numjobs=4 and numjobs=64, respectively:

   READ: bw=385MiB/s (404MB/s), 78.0MiB/s-115MiB/s (81.8MB/s-120MB/s),
io=11.3GiB (12.1GB), run=30001-30001msec
   READ: bw=382MiB/s (400MB/s), 2684KiB/s-12.6MiB/s (2749kB/s-13.2MB/s),
io=11.2GiB (12.0GB), run=30001-30009msec

With the two patches applied, performance improved significantly for
numjobs=4 and numjobs=64 cases, respectively:

   READ: bw=1191MiB/s (1249MB/s), 285MiB/s-309MiB/s (299MB/s-324MB/s),
io=34.9GiB (37.5GB), run=30001-30001msec
   READ: bw=4273MiB/s (4481MB/s), 49.7MiB/s-113MiB/s (52.1MB/s-119MB/s),
io=125GiB (134GB), run=30001-30005msec

[Bug 1845571] Re: ubiquity offers installation media as an install target

Ah right, so since we're using biggest_free that corrected line from xnox
wouldn't even run.
I opened up another bug for this regression so we don't lose it (bug 1847944),
so maybe we should move discussion there.

2019-10-13 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
Argh you're right of course. Have to run now, don't have time to make a
better patch.

And yes, I was assuming your recipe doesn't use some_device -- the
intent of my change was essentially to restrict the logic xnox added to
some_device and not the others (we should also probably add some
filtering to 'replace' to exclude the installer system, but usually
that's too small anyway AIUI).

[Bug 1845571] Re: ubiquity offers installation media as an install target

2019-10-13 Thread Mario Limonciello
Thanks for the quick turnaround! I was able to do some quick testing
with it, and it does fix the problem.

A few comments though:
* This line:
$(mount | grep -qF "$device on /cdrom ") && continue

Is what was in 134ubuntu10, so is that what you actually meant? It seems like
it might want to be:
$(mount | grep -qE ""$device"p?[0-9]* on /cdrom ") && continue

If you want to use the new logic xnox added.

* The OEM recipe we use doesn't use some_device, it uses biggest_free in
case it's relevant.

[Bug 1847946] [NEW] initramfs contains modprobe blacklist from all installed kernel versions

2019-10-13 Thread Zhang Youfu
Public bug reported:

# lsinitramfs /boot/initrd.img-5.3.0-18-generic | fgrep usr/lib/modprobe.d
usr/lib/modprobe.d
usr/lib/modprobe.d/aliases.conf
usr/lib/modprobe.d/blacklist_linux_5.3.0-13-generic.conf
usr/lib/modprobe.d/blacklist_linux_5.3.0-17-generic.conf
usr/lib/modprobe.d/blacklist_linux_5.3.0-18-generic.conf
usr/lib/modprobe.d/fbdev-blacklist.conf
usr/lib/modprobe.d/systemd.conf

I don't think this is the intended behavior.

The blacklists may have same contents most of the times. But when they
don't, (user changed kernel package/flavor/etc.) this may cause
unexpected issues.

[Bug 1847822] Re: CephFS authorize fails with unknown cap type

2019-10-13 Thread Billy Olsen
** Patch added: "bionic patch"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-archive/+bug/1847822/+attachment/5296864/+files/dont-validate-fs-caps-on-authorize.patch

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
  Attempting to provide access to a user within Ceph to a specific mount
  path fails with unknown cap type. This appears to be due to the monitor
  not knowing how to validate the caps that are provided with the mount
  path per upstream bug https://tracker.ceph.com/issues/39395 and
  subsequent pull requests.

  This is fixed in Mimic (13.1.0+) and included in the current Luminous
  devel release (upcoming 12.2.13).

+
+ [Test Case]

  Steps to recreate:

  1. Install ceph w/ ceph-fs.

  2. Mount ceph filesystem and create subdirectory for restricting access
  $ ceph-fuse -k /etc/ceph/ceph.client.foo.keyring --id foo -m 10.5.0.5:6789
/mnt/ceph-fs
  $ mkdir /mnt/ceph-fs/bar

  3. Authorize access for ceph user to rw a directory
  $ ceph fs authorize ceph-fs client.foo /bar rw

  Expected Results:

  The authorize command to succeed

  Actual Results:

  Error EINVAL: unknown cap type '/bar'

- Upstream pull-request:
- https://github.com/ceph/ceph/pull/28666
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ Regression potential is low as this has already been fixed upstream and
+ has seen additional testing without additional problem reports from the
+ change. The change does affect the validation of capabilities, so if a
+ problem were to arise it would likely be in the verification of
+ capabilities when the code is parsing.

[Bug 1806269] Re: nm-connection-editor crashes when trying to modify connection

2019-10-13 Thread shasheene
Hi,

I have this same problem on Ubuntu 18.04 i386, using an up-to-date
bionic environment (main/universe/multiverse of bionic, bionic-updates
and bionic-backports repos) .

I am attaching an apport service /var/crash log file. I couldn't find
any network-manager-gnome dbg packages, so I'm not sure the backtrace
will have symbols. If you need more information I am happy to help.

Reproduction: Launch nm-connection-editor, then double-click a connection to
modify it.
Workaround: Install gnome-keyring (which recommended package, not a dependency)
[1]

Given 18.04 is the last Ubuntu release with i386 support, I am unable to
move to a more recent Ubuntu release such as cosmic (or beyond) at this
stage. I am developing a live CD used by many users who aren’t Linux
experts, may have poor internet connection and may be using very old
computers. Given it's a non-persistent environment, saving passwords
with gnome-keyring is not useful, and the password prompt will likely
cause much confusion. My intention is to provide an i386 version based
on Ubuntu 18.04 until the maintenance support window ends in 2023 [2]

I've added the regression-update tag due to this being introduced in the
12.2.12 update via the SRU process.

I've also built a package in a PPA with the latest version for testing
purposes. You can find it at https://launchpad.net/~billy-

the aforementioned PR fixes this.

[Bug 1847944] [NEW] partman-auto 134ubuntu11 prevents installation from recovery partition

2019-10-13 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Partman-auto 134ubuntu11 added a new check to try to resolve bug 1845571
but in doing so, broke OEM installation from hard disk.

OEM installation from hard disk will place the ubuntu ISO image into a
recovery partition and boot from that to install. It is preseeded such
that the free space will use an expert recipe to install into.

Reverting changes from 134ubuntu11 back to 134ubuntu10 fixes OEM
